View Full Version : Mediaeval Persian Architecture

My current project involves creating concept drawings for a mediaeval Persian fantasy setting, from individual buildings to mighty city environments. The objective is to produce works depicting, as faithfully as possible, the setting in late 18th/early 19th century Persia.

I am asking if anybody has any advice, reference images, good websites, books, magazines or documentaries (BBC, Nat Geo, Discovery etc.) that they might recommend? (Wikipedia has already been raided for all its worth!)

The specifications/brief for the project are as follows:

1. The setting is late 18th/early 19th century Persia

2. The style is Dark Fantasy - Set in an alternative version of Persia c. 1800, there are all manner of djinn (genies), wizards and magic. This also means some important structures could be abnormally large/tall or unusual

3. I need to produce both internal and external concept drawings for residential, religious, political, industrial and military buildings (in addition to city walls, bridges and other structures)

4. Drawings will include:
- Environment
- 2D plans/maps
- Front & side elevations
- 3D cutouts showing interior

Some points that I need to take into consideration:

* The prevalent architecture of the setting will be from the 9th century Khorasani style through to 17th century Isfahani style.

* Building materials include heavy clays, moulded mud, lime mortar and brick/adobe structures.

* Geometry of Persian design - Persian architecture makes use of abundant symbolic geometry, using pure forms such as the circle and square, and plans are often based on symmetrical layouts featuring rectangular courtyards and halls.

* Decorative art (including stucco reliefs, decorated doors, gates, windows etc.)

* Post-Islamic cities have narrow, winding streets called Koochehs. These provide relief from dust-storms and intense sunlight.

* Windcatchers (or ab anbar) feature on many buildings and are used to create natural ventilation and to cool the air.

The project is in its infancy and will be ongoing throughout this year, so there is no immediate deadline. If you can provide any advice to assist me in this large project, I really would be grateful!

I plan to upload thumbnails, sketches, WIPs as I go along, so if you are interested, watch this space!

Thanks in advance.

Peace

Just a quick update for anyone who's interested ;)

I've been messing around with Sketchup to get some prototypes for Persian townhouse models on the go. I also plan to get some mosques, city walls, palaces, bazaars, water towers, sewers etc. done in Sketchup and these are currently at thumbnail stage. Will post some here shortly for critique.

Cheers

Ok folks, here are some images of a traditional Persian house that I am working on in Sketchup. Please bear in mind this is my first attempt at using Sketchup!

I plan to put these into Photoshop for paintovers (eventually in an environment with or without characters).

Any criticism/advice is always welcome :)

Ok I Have tried to go for the unusual here, mainly because the buildings of ancient persia are long gone! but I have found some references that you might find useful.

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/16165/16165-h/raw5b.htm

Now bear with me on this I haven’t gone mad, well not madder any how Have a look at chapter 5 it has plans and sketches in.

This is another one where you will think I have lost the plot but bear with me, the winery is based on and ancient Persian temple, all right there are hand rails and stuff for the more carbohydrate and calorie enriched Americans but the architecture is correct… er ish.

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/28072/28072-h/28072-h.htm

This is another academic paper from Gutenberg and the information on construction and such is in chapter 2.

There are some good images of adobe style construction and textures at this one, But it’s in Mexico not ancient Persia, sorry about that mate. Still it’s a texture to look at when all said and done

www.galenfrysinger.com/taos_new_mexico.htm

Have a look at the Aztec section to that has some good textures in it.

That is all for now matey but never fear I shall find you more! though I cant say when (sorry) this stuff is thin on the ground

Hi Again Rockets

Ok I have had a good look around for free textures and such like based around mud brick and clay etc. Now the building references are are ancient and not very helpful so I would imagine that you are going to have to adapt something to your needs regarding texture so with this in mind have a look at the following:-

http://www.grungetextures.com/
A selection of free textures for digital artists.

http://mayang.com/textures/
Some adaptable textures in here that could serve you well……. Sorry came over all star wars for a sec.

http://www.texturemaps.ca/free-textures.html
Some worthwhile texture freebies here.

http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/packs/brick_block/index.htm?0
a varied selection of adaptable stuff, will need work to get what you need out of some of them. But there is potential in some of them.

http://www.allgraphicdesign.com/textures.html
A series of links to all sorts of textures and freebies.

I really hope this helps you out buddy and I wish you well

You are quite welcome buddy, I will always help a fellow struggling artist in any way I can, and I am reasonably good at unearthing this stuff mainly due to my own desperate desire for textures in the past. he he

all the best with the work
