ROUND #150 :: QUEEN'S CONSORT

DESCRIPTION

Round 150 Special!!

Well guys, we've made it! 150 rounds of Chow!

This round is open. Basically, this is a lead-up to Round 200 and our new queen. Every Queen needs a consort... who will yours be?

(If you want some ideas for how to tackle this round, check out round #99 - Herald to the Queen.)

--- Thanks to Posh for The Extra Definition That Follows (In Case You Were Confused) : ---

This is Rumor Control. Here are the facts! (Al la Wikipedia... ahem)

A consort is a spouse or companion, often of royalty or a deity, sometimes slightly inferior in function/status.

* Queen consort, wife of a reigning king
* King consort, husband of a reigning queen
* Prince consort, possible title for husband of a reigning princess; alternative title for husband of a reigning queen
* Princess consort, wife of a reigning prince; alternative title for wife of a reigning king

A good example of a Queen's consort is Prince Albert who married Queen Victoria. He was never King, but was her partner in all things otherwise, and very important politically.

The topic is open for interpretation.

EDIT: If you want to see what people got up to in ChOW99 The Herald, have look here:

HERALD 1 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=112565)

HERALD 2 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=113170)

C'mon chaps... it's not really that hard. Imagine your queen and her partner, spouse, significant other, boyfriend etc, and design the male half of that relationship. It doesn't have to be based on Jessibean's queen either. With the next queen due at ChOW 200 this is a chance to anticipate that. A queens chum! That's all. Exercise those creative muscles. It's open so you can decide completely what they look like, however I would keep the character human... ish... and to a degree, regal in some way.

Make the most of it as next week we'll probably make it reeeaaal tough! Maybe...

So Queen's Consort, essentially means the king?

joyproject
March 2nd, 2009, 01:45 AM
By definition a Queens Consort is: the title given to the wife of a reigning king.

References: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_consort) | Webster (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/queens%20consort)

The title seems to imply that this "consort" belongs to the queen.. so ... someone who hangs out with the queen and is on her level? Not sure. Reference thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=112565).

Gah I wasn't going to enter this round but now...I might have a stab at it.

And wikipedia also says: A consort is a spouse or companion, often of royalty or a deity, sometimes slightly inferior in function/status.

So I guess it could be the king, but doesn't necessarily have to be...

has the queen been elected yet?

i mean is the consort supposed to blend in alongside a sf , a fantasy, a realistic queen, etc. ? or, is it up 2 us?

Yeah, I'm a little confused too. I found info on a Queen Consort, a woman who marries the reigning king, with no real political power only a title and social influence. But nothing on the Queen's Consort. Do we want it to be the man who marries the reigning Queen, again no power, only social influence and a title? Either way this will be an interesting round.

yoitisi
March 2nd, 2009, 03:41 AM
Hm for those of you who are confused: A Queen's consort is indeed the guy (or girl, that might make things complicated...) who marries the queen but has no official royal title or real power. Like, he's a king and is treated as such, but can't make any decisions. Should make for a very interesting character I think :)

Lake7less: It says right up top the topic is open, so yeh...

Remember the companion part as well. A consort does not necessarily need to be married to the reigning person, it might also be a lover for a longer periode. I've heard it used both in addition to a spouse and when not having a spouse.

I think that it can be used for the person in a harem (male or female ;) ) that has had the reignings persons attention the most over the years, as in the favourite or "first wife" or "first husband" too.....

Hmm, interesting. I'm slightly confused still...

Am I:

Designing the husband of the Queen? - I'm thinking it's this one.
A friend, not quite husband?

Difficult round. Always is when it's basically wide open. I'm not one for freedom. Lol!

Two current examples:

Queen of England: Elizabeth is the reigning queen. She has the power. Her husband is Prince Philip and he does not have the same rights or power as she does. She is the one keeping updated on the inner workings of the MI5 (Think James Bond) and so on. England is ruled by a politicians, but she still has some power.

Queen of Denmark: Margrethe is the Queen, and her husband is Prince Henri (originally French diplomat). He thought he would marry her and become King. He was sadly mistaken and later complained to the media. He has no power. She doesn't have much either, but she still outranks him by miles.

One day Sweden will have a Queen. She is getting married now, to a fitness trainer. Just got engaged. He will also become a Prince.

These princes/ husbands, must always walk one step behind their wife, as a sign of their inferior status. She speaks. He is allowed to speak.

Different men react differently to this. :) Some are strong enough to deal with it, others ... are not. The queens are also different.

I'm tidying up (Feng Shui Space Clearing big style - lol) and have a lot to do, at the moment. Should sit this one out.

This round has so much potential!

Is he the Queen's military muscle, ridiculously canny political ally, boy-toy, sugar daddy, foreign arm-candy, baby-provider? And that says nothing about his personality outside of his 'role'. Does he actually participate in a partnership with his wife and play an active part in running the 'country' or is he happy to let Queenie do the hard work while he gambles, drinks or sees his 'special friend'? Do he and the queen even like each other or is this just a political marriage?

Sounds like fun and I can't wait to see what people come up with!

posh i think all the confusion is in the actual description, there seems to be a contradiction. From my understanding, the queens concort is simply the husband or betroved to the reigning queen. But in the top section you have written : Queens concort, wife of reigning king, shouldnt that actually say queens concort, husband of reigning queen?

i just looked in wikepidia, and found this, i think a better discription would be guinivere would be concidered the queen consort to king arthur.

A queen consort is the title given to the wife of a reigning king (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch). Queens consort usually share their husbands' rank (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_and_noble_ranks) (in salic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salic_law) or semi-salic law monarchies) and hold the feminine equivalent of their husbands' monarchical titles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title). Most of the time, however, they have no real power.

Joey - Ok, I think we are to draw the (guy or gal) who is the consort of the Queen of CHOW 200 that has NOT been given yet. That's why it is open.

Like the description says, Like PRINCE Albert. He was married to QUEEN victoria. But he didn't have all her power.

I hope I didn't add to the confusion.

Great topic. Here's a quick sketch. I think I'm gonna go for a bored elf king. In the space on the right, will be the shadow of the Queen who's standing up.
I need to make him more royal still, but this is the general direction I'd like to go in.

It should be ok to some point, but as the design is about the Consort, the picture must be easily focused onto him.

Please leave the queen out. I don't mind shadows, or vague references to her, but I do *not* want you designing the queen. That's for round 200. :]

OTHERWISE:

I think people are getting confused. By "Queen's Consort" I mean "consort of the queen", rather than "Queen Consort" (notice no s and no possesive ' ) which is the "consort of the king".

Hope this makes sense.

I have a snow-day today, so I'm just sketching away today.

Sketch 2:
Here's what I'm going for; The Elf King. He was once a proud warrior, and due to social customs, married the queen. He soon found that the role carried with it no power. That it was mostly ceremonial and he grew bored.

In the illustration, I'm trying to show this boredom, but also tell the narrative. He wishes to get out from behind the queen's shadow, however, due to the nature of his role, he has no where to go. Even the shadow of the queen's staff, which is symbolically her power, is forcing him down and trapping in the composition.

Geez, that sorta sounded a little too artsy-fartsy-pretentious.

Jason: That's some helluh spiffy storytelling. He definitely looks bored, though a bit regretful at the same time. Like "Here we go again," or "I guess I got myself into this mess."
Fox: Sweeeet. I like how he doesn't get his own chair. I can't wait to see where your piece goes.
Oranje Joe: GOLDEN ANTLERS! I like the style of costume so far. Though, he'd have a big, intimidating silhouette when standing, and from the brief I think the Queen has more power? Maybe you'd want to slim down those antlers, to give him a more second-in-command feel. Your call. Whatever you do, I smell badassery afoot.

Um... I dunno, I'm going for primitive/low tech regal, in a tribal-matriarchal fantasy society. The "consort" is a bit of a house-husband. I couldn't resist drawing a wittle princess ;_; Pulling from a vague concept I had in the back of my mind for the culture.

Jason Snair[b]: The second version definitely did him more justice by pushing out the character! The backstory for this one will be awesome.

[b]Pseudocognition: Not much to say yet, I would just like to say that at the moment he looks really stiff (But I think this is just your exploratory drawing to see what kind of character you can come up with). I especially like that you are already exploring your future queen.

AvisNocturna: I especially like how you've conveyed that he is so undersought that he has taken up sewing. Keep going with this one, it has great potential.

Bara: Yours definitely has the prospects there. There's something not quite fitting for me at the moment anatomy-wise... I think his arms might be a tad on the short side. I'm no anatomy expert by far though...

Anyway... just tossing my 2cents in really fast ;)

Daest, Posh: Can the queen have a female consort, ie: a lesbian love affair? I noticed a lot of female heralds (or at least female looking) and historically speaking there were at least a few kings/rulers with a tendency to like boys, so there should be room for some gay lovin' right? :p
All jokes aside, I'm kind of floating around in the Star Wars theme from last round and I imagined Queen Amidala's handmaidens (especially Sabe since she is her 'doppelganger') but then as here consort/lover.

Great topic...........I'm having fun with the first skecths.....

It's pretty rough yet.....but the idea is that the "consort" or king.....is really vain, presumptuous....and doesn't really care about anything other than his appearance............He's a remarkable good-looking man .....and because of his attributes the queen is getting A LITTLE mad with jealousy....trying all the time desperately to hid him.....:P

For what I've read I think there's no problem if the queen appears in the scene just as a silhoutte.......Isn't it right??

Critics and comments are ...as always.....welcomed.....

Some comments:

Jason Snair: great start.....he really looks a little bored.....so you're in the right direction.........but he really remembers me more a viking than an elf right now.....Keep up!

AvisNocturna: really great concept........it's funny.........looking forward to see more...

I'm still confused. I'm fully aware of the concept of a queen's consort. I'm just not sure what you (posh) mean by the term "your queen". I wasn't aware we all had queens. Is this a queen we are supposed to have designed in a previous round? And what is this queen election thing? Is it a character design you elect to be the new poster child of CHOW, or is it an actual person, a leader of CHOW?

'Your' Queen meaning its an open breif, you get to choose whoever the queen is in your imagination and to just draw her consort ;) Not an actual exisitng queen.

As for the second question about the Queen election, at round 200 a new queen will be designed to be as you said 'the new poster child of CHOW' done like a similar round.

Stupid question,

My idea for this may or may not involve the queen of bondage. A dominatrix matriarch.

With this in mind, what's the policy on nudity. I know that its generally acceptable but I'm not quite sure what the reaction would be in this context.

Also is it ok to show a little of the queen, like perhaps her legs?

This is a quick thumbnail of what I had in mind as a composition. He would be the naked one, well almost. I suppose he would have all the trappings of proper bondage.

Pretty much I guess I'm concerned about going too far with the blatant, rather unconventional sexual references that people in bondage exhibit.

Oh sweet jesus I want to see the end product of this concept like nobody's business. From my knowledge of CHOW and CAorg in general, I think nudity in all of it's various forms is okay, as long as it's not gratuitous (AKA not porn). What counts as gratuitious...? I have no idea.

Way rough but it's a start:

608314

The marriage of young Queen Meg to na-Baron Rupert of Tharse was perhaps the most unlikely in the history of the Kingdom, yet their reign is looked upon fondly as a golden age of prosperity and peace. Perhaps this was due in no small part to their mutual understanding, reached on their wedding night over a marathon game of backgammon: Rupert kept mum about the Queen's not infrequent visits by studly paramours, and Meg turned a blind eye to the occasional late-night visit to the Prince's chambers by comely young page-boys.

Rupert enjoyed riding and hunting, was an avid supporter of the arts, and wrote several scholarly treatises on the aerodynamics of African and European Swallows.

Trying very hard to come out of lurker mode around here. Somebody please kick me until I finish this.

Since the topic fit in closely with an idea I was playing with just last night, I figured this would be a good one to jump in on. I was thinking about A Midsummer Night's Dream and a version of it set in the swampy bayous of the South. With the faeries adopting some of the styles of clothing from the humans but mixing them with nature elements (cypress, spanish moss, etc.). So I guess, this would be my version of Oberon?

Huh, my idea is pretty different from most of the other ones. At first I thought the Queen of Chow was a "Medusa", but now I think that every new Queen is a different design topic, right?
Well, I wanted to go with that Medusa theme and started doodling around, but everytime I do that, I'm getting frustrated pretty quickly because it's not turning out the way I wanted/imagined it to be... Gotta get my drawing skillz going first D:
Maybe someone else can finish it for me :^^;:

I think for this one I'm going to go with a charmingly sly little pervert of a Queen's consort. He makes whoopee with the rest of the court under the Queen's nose, but uses her favor to have anyone who would expose his misdeeds to her, put to death.

Darthmash: haha... not quite finished. I paint very fast, I've been told. It doesn't always seem like it to ME, though. I think it's just that the way I paint is to allow myself to experiment as I go, and make mistakes and change things very organically as I build up the paint. Probably not the best way to do it, but it works for me.

Hard to crit yours at this stage. Muscle build up looks good... little condensed in the abdomen, maybe. Once you've blocked in a little more of the composition it'll be easier, I think.

Having never done this before I'm not sure how often updates are encouraged. I'm afraid if I post less frequently it'll seem done too quickly. If that makes sense? Work here is mostly on the face, chest and back arm and coat.

dwinbotp: I'm all for boy toys. Just don't make him too pretty. That's a lovely pose, though.

Mirrored it earlier and fixed some glaring balance issues. Now it's mainly playing with costume details and deciding precisely what he's holding in his other hand. My Oberon is a lazy, regal, vain creature with a plan to get back at the Queen who loves to toy with him.

Mat Kaminski
March 4th, 2009, 01:13 AM
Thanks for the comment rinjii. As for right now, I think I'm going to continue on the beaten path that I'm on and possibly adjust later... I'm mainly just trying to focus on getting some digital painting fundamentals down... This is only my second attempt at anything digital in about a year and a half. I've just finally decided eff it and I'm going to do it.

Jason Snair: That's looking pretty nice, but the hand nearest to the face still doesn't seem like it has any weight to it. If you really want to make the scene believable, make him really look like he's slumping in the chair. It would push more weight down onto the hand and thus make it crumple a bit more and the fingers would be more curved around the face. I'm really digging the mood lighting you have going on here though, can't wait to see this one finalized.

Mercuralis: It's looking nice for sure! I like how it seems pretty soft. I can't wait until the lighting is full and the rest of it gets textured. Keep going! :)

Like I said earlier, I'm attempting to get back into digital painting, so crit me to the bone ;)
My goal is to be able to participate in the queen one (#200) and hopefully get it look nice.
I've also come to the realization that a white canvas is terrible for me to paint on, so I'm starting a new trend for myself by adding a base color first and then coming back in with white to estimate lighting, then color :) It seems to be a good workflow for me... let's see it go all the way, huh? :D

Here's the before-bed-update...

I decided to go in a completely different direction fo what was supposed to be for this CHOW. I won't be entering my piece as I want to focus on the piece as a scene rather than specifically on the character of the consort.

For those who were curious about what I was doing here, is the drawing so far.

I still need to work out any anatomical issues that I know must be there but I haven't yet seen. If anyone see's anything that needs work, let me know. I'll try and get around to posting critiques for the other entries. So far they're looking really good.

For progress on this piece, (I do hope to finish it, I'm not sure how exactly yet, be it painting or a simpler more graphic approach. Maybe I'll do a couple of versions, just to try out both ways) just swing by my sketchbook. The link's below.

Here is mine so far. I'm taking this opportunity to expand my universe, so hopefully its allowed (although I will need a few more species by the time the Queen comes). Still need a bit of an outfit and to work on his face.

Pseudocognition - I really like the concept!
dwinbotp - that is a great pose, he looks so full of himself, and the composition is great too.
Matte_Art - To me the head looks like it's too small for his body, but I like your take on him.
artina - The detail is fantastic. I can't wait to see where this goes!

Humans have nothing that makes them special among the other creatures. Feeling inferior and outmatched, they began to experiment withtechnological and biological mutations. Each became less then human as they did so and each grew to hate the other side. This is the consort of the bio-sapiens. He has been made from fewer species so that he may accomplish his task and nothing more. His task: Simply to ensure there is a Queen to the next generation. Normal bio-sapiens will grow a new body within themselves. The Queen does this as well, but she also removes the new body of her Consort and replaces it with a second of her own. There it acts as his heart. Were the queen to die and both her old and new body destroyed, he would be killed and the queen growing inside him harvested.

Two of the species I'm using for him are Wa-Nath, known for their healing abilities and extreme faithfulness, and the Eelavane who "reincarnate" after each death at the price of forgetting one of their past lives. This gives him undying loyalty to the Queen and her goals, as well as an eternal life of sorts so that he (or she depending on the role of fate) may always carry out this role for her.

Mat Kaminski
March 5th, 2009, 10:15 AM
Well... I think the problem mainly is, consider the rule of thirds when making your painting. If not it tends to have an overall unpleasing result to the eye. My suggestion would be definitely to off-center him. Remember that the eye is supposed to flow from the the draw in point (I'd say the light) to the most important element of the painting (Him).

Rule of Thirds (http://painting.about.com/library/blpaint/blcompositionclass2.htm)

There's the rule if you need a visual explanation :)

Good luck!

Interesting topic... I did some research on the Royal Dutch Family and found the relationship between Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik quite interesting.
The role of a consort is kinda boring, he's to be nothing more than decoration. His most important obligation is to produce an heir.
I thought a dandy would fit this role nicely, since they mostly care about appearance and status rather than power.

Here's what I have at the moment- I sketched the pose and basic lighting. I'm trying to get the anatomy as correct as possible before I add clothes and color.

jason snair - i'm not sure about the lower half of the throne being so dead-on front to the viewer. everything else kinda points to the queen's shadow and jumps of the page, but the throne kills alot of dynamism like that.
darthmarsh - i think his sword arm needs to be raised alittle. (as in,his shoulder's alittle too low) looking at the composition,i think it might work better if you make the dragon's tail cover up as much in the left upper corner,as the body does in the lower left. not sure though.

pixeltuner, I think the bowstring needs to look more like it wraps her body, right now it tends to flatten the pic out, 'specially given the straight-on pose, minimal foreshortening of the bow, and the 2D-ish BG treatment. Just a thought.

Good contrapposto, nicely balanced. Colors make this ol' Yankee feel soooo patriotic :happypatriot: ;) :yayca:

Thx! Yeah it makes me patriottic as well, having the same colours in the Dutch flag ;) Anyway, the bow was added later so I have work that a bit more into the design. The string needs to be tight still, but looking more like it presses on her boob and catch less light on certain spots. Anyway, you're right: Gotta fix it :D

This CHOW just sounds too fun to pass up...
I forgot to save WIPs til just now so this is the earliest stage I have to show (which is almost finished). I just need to finish the landscape in the background, touch up his clothes, and do something with that wall... it's kind of bothering me... I think I may make it more shadowy, especially down by his legs. Comments?

Everyone's looks so good! Lot of variety. Darthmarsh, your dragon is amazing!

Hate to start over but since my Queen got in the way of my initial concept, might give this one a try and hopefully finish it.Going for a kid being the consort, barely old enough to hold his clothes together, just for fun though, cc are always welcome

i need 2 know, if i post the wips here do i still need 2 post them in the finals thread? ( i'm embarrassed 2 ask this, but what does w.i.p stand 4? i know what they r but what does it mean? i could only figure out "While In Process?" )

I might add some shadows or light where the wall meets the carpet but i'm not sure; any advice or how to?

WIP stands for Work In Progress.

masque: I love yours.........the concept is great and the values you used makes it so soft... but I agree with the mid-ground elements......
AcidSev: yours is turning out great..........keep up........The only thing that is disturbing me a little is the quantity of that green on it..........but after you put some values it must gete better....
Jason Snair: I don't have any critics......it's really great....in my opinion you can consider it finished!
lake7less: don't need to be embarassed..........wip means work in progress........and yes...you need to post them on finals thread or to post a link to your wips here....you choose..... About your concept......I think you need to make the hole wall more uniform in color.......and the shadow you asked must be really soft.....Keep up!
Newman101: it can be really good.....I would rise a little his right shoulder...and remember his neck's muscle (don't know the name of it :P) starts behind the ears....not in the middle of the neck...
Pixeltuner: Awesome work......love the concept......love the colors....and the graphics behind her.......
JennyDavis : you have a great style......looking forward to see it finished....but that's one thing disturbing me....his little finger of the right hand is just to slim.....
dwinbotp: your first one is so beautiful....I'm suffering for you can not post that one....:P...........But the new one is great........really cute....I'm lokking forward to see more...
darthmarsh: yours is great..........loved the dragon's texture....I just miss a little mood.....you could blur a little the back part of the dragon....as it's far away....(not sure if it can work)....just an opinion... Keep up!

Listened to Matte Art about the Rule of Thirds......and tried to fix it...........I think it's better now.....but definitly not the way I wanted it to be.......Thanks Matte Art!

Now I'll just work on it again on sunday...........but I think I'm finally going to finish it without running....... Hope so....:P

I have added the following to the second post in the final burning:

---

Quick Check: Have You Submitted Your Chow Properly?

- is it named correctly? (ie, "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg")
- has it been uploaded using the attachment editor?
- have you also uploaded or linked to your wips?
- have you followed the brief?

Good luck!

---

I should no longer hear any complaints about not knowing how to submit. It is literally posted *all over* chow in many, many places. If you don't know how to use the attachment editor, you can pm me, but there are also instructions elsewhere on the board.

Comments on everyone else's later, I'm in class :( Great work, though, everyone, and there has been some nice crit flying around.

Not too much different from the last version, but I fixed his face to be the age I intended for him to be. It was looking a little too young before. Adding some beaded and embroidered details...

N-man; It's a good start. I like his face and expression a lot and the lighting you've established so far is good.. My only minor issue is that he doesn't seem...like he'd be hanging out with the Queen. He seems more like a merchant than a Queen's consort. Although, perhaps you're going for that angle. Also, the belts don't seem to be following the form of the character. Even if he were a rotound individual, I'm not so sure that the belts would be that squared off and leveled. Do you see what i mean? On a real person, the belts would pinch in the fabric and would cause them to follow the contour of the body.

Great work everyone, wish I had the brains to comment in detail...

But since dwinbotp post is right above mine... If I were a queen, I'd want a consort like that!! :D

Anyway, mines a eunuch... sort of inspired by how eunuchs were employed in Imperial palaces in the east as servants for female royalty. They have performed a wide variety of functions in many different cultures such as: courtiers or government officials, military commanders, and guardians of women or harem servants. (Yay wikipedia).

The queens long time BFF, heh... Not only does he have a lot of clever advice and suggestions on ruling (or whatever) but tons of hot gossip and beauty/fashion tips etc as well... still need to fix some stuff, weird issues, especially with the stretched leg...?

The second concept is something I did today. It was a character design for a friends story but it fitted the CHOW theme as well. But I think I'll stick with the first idea.

Anyway, my first CHOW! Yay! It's past midnight here, gotta go!

Prince Rupert of Tharse
613357

The arranged-before-birth marriage of young Queen Meg to Baron Rupert of Tharse was perhaps the most unlikely in the history of the Kingdom, yet their reign is looked upon fondly as a golden age of prosperity and peace. They enjoyed a convivial relationship for life, though Rupert would frequently chide the Queen (in older-brother fashion) about her abysmal taste in men.

Rupert enjoyed riding and hunting, was an avid supporter of the arts, and wrote several scholarly treatises on the aerodynamics of African and European swallows.

Jeremy Hoffman. I like the light hitting the flower. I kind of wish we would see the chair tops as you have in the sketch. Those screaming faces are cool looking.

Here's my final:
Fixed his eye, shadow lines, tangents, perspective of the floor.
Added decoration on marble floor.

I'm happy.

So i've been busy doing this chow. I haven't posted here in a long time so i was a bit hesitant to post earlier. Silly me. ;)

I'm a little late coming to this one- usually I sit out and just mull over ideas in my sketchbook, but I kind of liked my idea for this one and wanted to finish it. Going to try to finish it up tonight.

It looks a little funky flipped but I can't put my finger on why- I feel like things are more difficult to read.

Anyway, any tips are appreciated. I probably wont get to them until after the CHOW is over, but for future revisions they would be great!
