Hereīs the topic for the battle:
Creature based.
Mythological creature created by human in the near (or far) future. It can be geneticaly created (jurasic park type) or mechanicaly created (animatronic or something like that).
It must look real and full of life.
What i mean with real is that it canīt look like a magical creature. To explain myself, it canīt be a creature like a balrog (made of fire) but it can spit fire because itīs technicaly posible to do it.
No limitations on the media.
At least one full rendered picture must be done.

Mcotie, take the time you need to take some rest an prepare metally.
I can win you with both hands tied on my back and my wacom pencil in my teeth but i want this to be fun, so donīt make it so easy buddy :evilbat:

Jaku. You could only wish that I had time to rest my friend. I've been bustin my ass but I made a little time to crank out some WIPs. I chose the Manticore as my Mythical beast. This is a legendary beast from Asia. it is a Lionlike creature with bat wings and the tail of scorpion and the head of a human with a lions mane. But since we had to show this as fabricated by humans in the far future, I gave it a tail of a minigun and linkage, fixed wings. I've got a few other ideas floating. I'm also playing with an appropriate pose for my final illustration.

I will reply with senseless praise! YOWZAH! cool concept.

Ok I have to try and be constructive; I will say I definitely do not like the fixed wings, but it looks like you changed it in your latest design. Also I think the shiny black robotic look is not as successful as a cyborg approach. Make a gory organic human face stapled on the head! That might just be personal taste though.

Joeslucher
January 9th, 2004, 02:05 AM
I agree with Nimrod about the fixed wings. In the first post the face looked very gorrilla like and I'm glad you chose to go away from that as well. The latest looks very awesome. Can't wait to see it finished. I like the spinal/Aliens look of that tail.

My God! This is going to be hard....:rambo:
Iīll post my sphinx progress soon (when i have it...):P

Jaku
January 9th, 2004, 09:56 AM
Better thought, a sphinx would be a female version or the monster you choose. Iīll think another one... :evilbat:

how did i miss this!!
:bash:

im diggin your manticore! that minigun tail is schweet, and like the others said, im glad you changed the fixed wing look.
the head design is original too!

cant wait to see this finished! and i also cant wait to see what jaku is cookin up =)

Jaku
January 9th, 2004, 11:42 AM
Well this is what i was thinking about.
Still thinking on it.
Do you allow some kind of male/female war mcotie?

Wow, cool work both of you... I like that female but the front legs dont really fit in with the concept imo.. I'm unworthy to crit  but please take it into consideration :P

Good battle shaping up here!

mcotie--I really like your newest pic and I think a shiny black carbon-fibre manticore would rock!

jaku-- don't back off because of similar creatures, just dig into the cultures that created the sphinx. I think the Egyptians didn't always have wings (if ever, not certain), while the Babylonians (or maybe Sumerians?) sphinx were mostly male and did have wings. Build a sphinx for the Neo-Babylonian war machine!

Here's my problem, how come your sketches look like my finished stuff. You son of a b*tch. I've got this folder on my desk top called "inspiration" and in that folder is another called "Mitch". Nuff said.

Jaku- Lovely sketch! great values. Look out mitch.

mitch- those two pieces are fuckin awesome! love the torch. it shows me how much quicker I can be and still be 100+ times as effective. i really liked the first 'study' too

jaku- i really like the color studies dude!! i like the tits, but you gotta figure out how this chick cat is gonna deal with that manticore..... make her more threatening and give her some fire retardant armor!

Great battle here!

mcotie - Wow! That's freaky awesome! Love the blow torch and the details on the head are just jaw dropping gorgeous! I think the legs look a little fragile right now though. I think they need to be beefier and the hind legs seem to far forward (like it's sitting very uncomfortably).

Awesome work guys!

Mcotie: You're damn good! You call those sketches? Two gripes though:

1) I think that it would be much better if the head was attached to the body through the wires (that act as hair) only and if it could freely move in and out of the body.
2)I also think that the head could be a bit smaller.

Awesome stuff regardless.

Thanks guys. dfacto , good eye!. I reduced the size of the head. much better. thanks!

that is fly mitch!! damn.. great design and rendering.. i love the tail man..

i do however think it would look a lot better with legs that were a little larger in scale though. right now it looks like if he stood up he would only have about half a foot of clearance from the ground. id personally go with something that had a closer relationship with the size of his head..

Wow mitch I am really happy for you...that security job and the frustration with those stupid computers in that computer lab are LONG GONE...you are doing exactly what you want to do. You've worked really hard and you deserve to be where you are now. It's awesome to see one of us go from attending school and trying to get into the business to kicking some serious butt and producing some AWESOME work. Keep it up man. :chug:

i agree - very puddinheadesque...more alive, vibrant, charged and focused. the others are good as well, but are more ambient at present.

Jaku~ Love the sketch. As far as pallet goes, I like top right and bottom right. I really like the "alien" feeling of the greens, but I'm also diggin' the colors of the wings in the bottom one.

hey mcotie:
thanks for your comment on my td sketch,
you had inspired me to work on rendering with another comment of yours a time ago and appreciate the nudge.

i love the design of your entry, this is a very good match up, you have given jaku quiet a scare i am sure :p

i think his arms are looking a little to short and stubby, the design on him looks very dexterous save his front legs. i know you are still working on it, but wanted to throw that out there for you to think about if you haddn't already.

best of luck to both of you, looking forward to your bout.

thanks for all of the great replies from everyone. I appreciate all of them. I took it to heart to make more changes to the Manticore's front legs. I actually studied some cat cadavers on the internet to see the muscle structure and applie it here. I wish I could really pimp this piece out "Milligan Style" but I really have no time to spare so this will be my final version of it.
