Ionic, that is looking really fantastic! I love the heavy, opaque quality of the red.
Hideyoshi, you should totally add some bright crispy embers to that dude's severed head. >:D Otherwise, it looks pretty awesome.
Areve: nice attitude in the face and posture! :D

Thanks for the second opinion, MJ -- I see what you mean and I'll work on that!! I appreciate it :)
oh and btw, Ionic, I'm going to break my drool rule and say that yours looks beautiful - you have a fine, fine grasp on value and color, sir.

still can't decide:
My only worry with this is that it almost focuses more on the victim then the sithlord.

soupandbutter I still think the second one looks too nice, I think it's in the eyes. a bit of crinkling at the top of the nose and lowering the brow there a little I think would give it a more condescending and menacing look. But they're both pretty awesome.

Sam C - Time is of the essence. Get all the lighting mapped out roughly then go for the details. If I'm right, it looks like you've been doing it the other way around. It's also what I've being doing, but I'm allowed to tell you this because I'm a hypocrite ;) Not bad at the moment btw :)
Hideyoshi - Nice dude, nice. The boobs are good, the legs seems like they would start a little further back than where you have drawn the abdomen, so her torso should be hunched forwards more, at the moment she looks a little pregnant.
Flameraven - perhaps make her face a little more evil looking?
Nice nebula.
Ionic* - Sweeeeet! only thing I have to crit is the perfectly symetrical v-shaped shadow on the crotch. Looks like you're going to put something there but if not, I can't really see why it exists.
Djinn - maybe you mentioned it in a previous post but I cant really read what's going on with the red on the right. If it's blood then it's a bit powdery, and if it's enerdy i think it needs to be super cloudy, or kind of solid. And I thought you might like to know that lightsabers instantly singe the blood vessels closed when they strike through flesh. so you don't bleed when you get cut by one. (random fact I heard a long time ago. Might be wrong)
Soupandbutter - I like the bottom one, composition and character design-wise. perhaps do more with the background if you weren't going to. I feel that a molten furnace like in SW6 would suit the piece.
It will look at least a little bit good soon, I promise. I'm just struggling with the composition :( And I do have a whole Intricate character design planned so it's not just the scene I'm focusing on.
aaaanyways... will update this thread with more crits later. Don't want to to land at the beginning of the page again.

Yeah, its pretty well established in the media that lightsabers (and in fact, all the Star Wars laser weapons) cauterize (that's the word it seems some of you are looking for :3) wounds immediately upon inflicting them, due to the incredibly high temperatures involved.
That said, do what you want. Express yourself. If you want to throw some vitae around, then just do it and to hell with physics.

Hideyoshi; that's looking awesome! Only crit i have is about her legs. Her right (our left) foot is getting smaller, but the foreshortening isn't happening. Her leg is still too long, i think you should shorten it, creating and overlap with the patella. The knee coming towards as could've been bigger and a bit fatter (due to folding the leg).
Also her legs are too far apart -unless it was meant that way.
I kinda wanna see those feathers around her thighes jump around too :D

Djinn- i took your advice about the lightsaber and the cheekbones- i even shifted the right eye over a tad. can't do anything about the hand, though- she'll just have to be in mid-gesture to push the lightsaber forward.
i settled on the Mirialan race as far as her characteristics go- no hood since i envision her to be rather reckless and she is in motion- maybe the hood fell off? i need critiques on the skintone though- is it acceptable for that race? any way i can make it less transparent?

Any crits before she goes in the Final Burning would be happy and good and have this one muchly thankful.
LORD M - You might want to watch the legs. To me it looks like if I look at her top half, she's coming towards me, but looking at her bottom half, it looks like she's walking to the left. Other then that, she's looking killer!

Jska: I like the pose and the costume... but the body's a bit off. Everything from the waist up is fine proportionally, but her legs are way too short. Not sure if you did that on purpose to try and keep the entire picture on the page or not...

Darth Liniia was an unsurpassed Master of Beast Control, and actually developed this Force capability into an offensive weapon for the first time. After years of study of the symbiotic relationship of the midichlorians and the hunter animals of Genraar, gaining great knowledge of the ways in which the Force could amplify the predatory nature of all living things, Darth Liniia rose to her ascendancy by having her mentor and his entire household torn to shreds by a pack of Rhu-cats under her direct control. Liniia eventually embodied her knowledge in the extremely deadly lightsaber style known as jian'nis'rok (fang and claw)
Always reaching for new ways to expand her own predatory nature, she became one of the first humanoids to successfully receive the transplanted eyes of an animal, giving her a range of vision far in excess of her species' norm.
__________________________________________________ _________________
Character basis: The Sith being the antithesis of the very ascetic Jedi, I figured my Liniia would be a supreme sybarite, selfish and self-indulgent, basking in sensual pleasures as readily as the pleasure of the kill.
I also have not portrayed her as a badass blade-swinging warrior (although she has been and can be that, most definitely), because she is a Sith Lord at her prime, and is now much more a puppet master (as was Palpatine/Sidious) than a soldier for the dark side (Maul, Dooku and Vader). She also eschews (gesundheit!) armor, finding it places limits on her lightsaber techniques (ref: KOTR) and her consummate skills make it redundant anyway.
Other movie universe tie-ins:
Costume -- echoes that of Oola the twi'lek dancer at Jabba's palace in Return of the Jedi. Liniia was an orphan raised in the twi'lek slums by a dance troupe, and was an accomplished dancer by age six, when she began to manifest Force skills. Her "family" presented her to the local Jedi Academy campus as a candidate for padawan, but the interviewing Jedi Master refused her enrollment, stating that her attachment to possessions and self-comfort would always inhibit her full knowledge of the Force. She proved him wrong. Dead wrong, in fact, as his assassination was her first assignment under Sith tutelage.
Background -- architecture based on that of both Bespin and Tatooine (Jabba's palace and Mos Eisley)
Rhu-cat -- a distant cousin (in an evolutionary sense) of the wookie, but even worse-tempered and vicious. Liniia is the only being known to have domesticated a Rhu-cat. Its predatory emotions pleased her, and she occasionally fed her lovers to it after mating. Meow!

Dont' know if anyone else thought about this, I didn't have time to go through the 18 pages of pictures. It's an alternate version of Princess Leia as a Dark Sith Lady. I saw somewhere a Dark Obi Van, and I've found it a very cool idea. And I like the original trilogy much more than the rest (I'm probably not alone). The picture has a lot of problems, I know, and it's nothing fancy, just I thought I share the idea, but still a lot of work to do with it.
So, the story will be something like this: on Endor, Darth Vader realises that it's much easier to turn Leia to the dark side, so that battle ends with a lot of casualties on the rebel side, the Anakin family separated and the Death Star not destroyed. With Darth Organa's help the Emperor tries to hunt down Leia's brother, Luke, and the rest of the rebel scum in the 4th episode of Star Wars muhaha.

My sith is using dark side powers to control the rancors mind, aswell as using force lightning. I'm going to change a lot in her appearance I think though :) To simple at the moment atleast.
EDIT: oi, the head isn't exactly at the right spot xD
Should I crop it? like only have the sith and her rancor? or should I include forcelightning and to-be fried jedi?

My final entry or hope so ^^
Naruha Warano (Darth Nebulous)
Specie : Mirialan
Occupation : Diplomate , Negociator
-------------------------------------------------------------
"Althought she is well-skilled in melee combat , her stenght is in mind control that she master at the perfection even on strong mind , using the light-saber in some rare case!
During the Old Republic she was a respected diplomat and negociator , well now by the highest personnalities of Coruscant (it occurs she helped a lot of them with some undertable services , like during contracts negociations ) , always hiding her dark indentity !
When the Empire was instaured, Palpatine made her killed during the Jedi Purge, scared that she would use her power and influences to take his seat .
Although she is a Sith , she just avoid to put herself into melee , her favorite way to kill is to return her target's bodyguard against him .
It says that her breatsplates is an old artefact made with cortosis an extremely expensive material who has the property to cut the laser flux"
Sorry for the english , i hope i didn't make too much mistake ^^

I'd love to know how you actually coloured it. It doesn't look like you used layerstyles really...Layers, layers, and more layers. About 40 altogether in the final rgb file, which is the 5th .psd in the progress toward finish. Some have little more than a few strokes on them, some are major modifications. I put together a GIF sequence showing the major layer steps:
Darth Liniia Layer Demo (animated GIF) (http://www.cdupload.com/view/full/49152_7jr8g)
I use all kinds of layer blending modes, whatever seems to work best for what I have in mind, and build the overall visual effect in small increments. I like doing ala prima as well, but that's an entirely different look.
Sorry about the external link, but it seems animate GIFs can't be attached and won't show as inliine [IMG] tagged items-- unless there's some secret formula the mods are keeping under their collective hats? :)

somethign is really bugging me about this but whenever ichange something it looks worse so I'm not surewhat it is. Been staring at it too long I think.Hi, D'Lolita. Hope you don't mind my presumption but I have some ideas about your image I put in a paintover:
605958
From the top of the hips and up, and the swirling sabers and stuff, I think is primo, one of the best imo, and that dreadfully calm, wrecked face among all the swirling action is a super statement of Sithness. Can't say exactly why but I get a very strong Jeff Jones vibe from this pic.
But her lower body gets sort of disconnected by scale, perspective and definition issues. I scaled some of your main elements (like the kneepad) and slopped in some reconstruction strokes that bring the lower body back into the same image space as the upper torso. Not nearly as interesting as your excellent brushwork, but I think if you give the viewer some more clues (and they can be subtle, as it's a strong point of your image that so much is implied) about the pose of the lower body, it could help give a solid base to the image.

@Zimfin: I love the sense of motion and power in the "force push" in your piece. I think you have to look over her anatomy though, especially in the shoulders and hips, she looks very very thin especially over the shoulders, most noticably the left shoulder.

The layered approach I've used in this and other pieces shown on CA comes closer to the gouache illustrations I did in pre-digital days, using airbrush and fine sables, which was often also a building up of color layers. I like the digital results better because of the immense flexibility it gives to really tweak things to a 'T'.

Come on, people. The rules are clear and I keep putting up reminders. I don't want to cut people for silly reasons like this, but I will!

Whoa MJ_Alcazar! Your lighting is awesome man--just a dash of specular highlight on the right boot would help though, I think. And I'm definitely digging those tattoos--you'll probably get to it, but the only bit of tattoo that doesnt seem to fit with the rest of the tatt's is the blobby bit on her forearm, just add a little spike or pointy bit and I think it'll fit in better. The armor design is sick, but the little digital-looking piece seems to clash with the rest of her style, and try not to lose the rest of the flowing gown entirely into the darkness. It's looking great man, looking forward to seeing more!
LORD M Those eyes are incredible, and the rendering on the flowing cloth is awesome. one minor note though, the bottom of her belly looks just a tad odd, it looks kinda like you meant to get back to it but forgot. Overall its looking good, and the BG looks promising.
JoeX All I have to say, is that is a great pose.
Oranje Joe Even though I really like your piece, it is very hard to read.
grey Haha, glad to help, I really like the pose and the palette--which definitely fits nicely with the tuscan raider hood. I like the subtlety of the glow in her eyes too.
cmalidore Very cool face and lighting.

I'm terrible with color, gradients, rendering, etc. I don't have a clue what I'm doing... which is why I am loving doing this so much. It feels good to step outside my comfort zone and get some real experience in digital painting. I won't be producing some of the stellar work seen here anytime soon, but I definitely feel like I'm getting some good experience. Now I just need to figure out the brushes...
Anywho, tomorrow is going to be completely dedicated to her skin, face, hair, and cloak (including feathers). I hope I have time to give her a decent backdrop; my friend suggested 'evil' handmaidens behind her... sort of a perverse Padme, with her own little coven of force-sensitives. I'm still extremely unhappy with her tattoos, but I've been thinking hard about it and think I may have a solution...
note: force lightning not included.
another note: grey, if you are not in the comic book industry, you should be. There is so much energy in that pose I wanted to go 3 rounds with my MMA friend after seeing it. I love your pencil work-- splashing color on it almost seems like a hate-crime (but then, I've always been a-scared of color :( )

Well, I got some feedback over at my sketchbook thread from people complaining that my SITH BARONESS pic was not looking Star Warzy enough, other than the light saber. Suggestions were made and I might still finish that one, but I began something else -- influenced by some of the other works here -- and somehow I think I might have made some huge personal rendering leap.
I know the anatomy's not gonna be quite right, because I haven't drawn people much, and I wasn't using any sort of reference, but I'm really happy with it nonetheless. I have no idea how far I can take this, because I've never been where this pic is headed, but I couldn't be happier with this CHOW experiment, and I'm really excited about the prospect of suddenly being able to do characters! :teeth: Thank you CHOW! Will update tomorrow.

This has turned into an awesome gigantic round! Thanks to all who posted. I have enjoyed looking at the ocean of creativity flowing through this thread.
A few people asked for C&C over the last couple of pages. I wanted to offer some comments if it is not too late.
JoeX: I know what you mean about completing a CHOW. I have struggled with finishing for quite a while. I like what you have going with the design of the clothing, the figure's pose and the background. I think her left arm could be shortened up a little. Maybe add a bit of breathing room to the top and the bottom of the image. It looks like she is standing on a reflective surface. It would be nice to see the reflections of those light sabers.
mimer: The modeling of the forms looks great. The design and rendering of her head area are nicely done. I know it is a WIP but, I think the piece would come together with some tones added to the background.
Flipnastywebby: I like what you done with the pose, character placement and the color scheme. The weapon design is eye catching too.
Djinn : The chain and her clothing work well together. I agree with AhChu's comments on the anatomy. Maybe a bit of blue incorporated into the background would help resolve the discord you mention.
Wolfentir: Nice design on the face and cloak. The lighting from the sabers really adds to the piece. I think her right foot/leg could be shortened up a little.
I just wanted to say thanks to rushwolf, post # 478 and trevor, post # 469 for their comments concerning distractions and procrastination. I had not planned on entering this round until I read their words of wisdom. I don't have a problem with video games but, I fall into other diversions that keep me from sketching and painting. Thanks again for the virtual kick in the butt.

how to colorize/paint my work without losing what I think is my main strength (the linework) is something I've been thinking about alot. howdy, grey. Here's some stuff you might try:
606623
Shows how to bring the line work into the color in a fairly direct fashion but still keep it "painterly." You can paint on the "line wash" layer, adjust its opacity, and use layer masking to get exactly the kind of edge modulation you think looks best. Example's pretty subtle but you can make it more pronounced if you want.

Hey all - great entries, once again. I will post comments in another post. Here is my entry so far - have some time to tighten it up some tonight, open to any comments. Not really a traditional overlord - going for reclusive, enigmatic sith superpower..
_________________________________________
Once a master level jedi, Darth Maliss was trapped too close to the chaos of a raging sith energy inferno, this creature is now neither completely woman nor dark energy, inhabiting a kind of purgatory that lies somewhere in between.
She is immensely powerful, immensely evil and serves only the essence of dark energy.
She inhabits crystalline caves as a means to cast her power over long distances and travels the universe performing assassinations on key empire targets.
It is thought if she could be cornered by key jedi masters, the evil could be driven from her and return her to the side of light.
Her body markings enflame when she uses the force. The jedi are pious and pure, this creature is neither. The orbs above her head are slave AIs that emit thin lightsaber arcs while spinning. They can guard a camp, be left as bombs, fly reconnaissance or assist in a fight.

tonic - very cool stuff - love your style. The last one three grabs me the most - the whip sabre is cool. Not sure I would know it was from star wars at this point - great sketches tho.
trevor - holy smokes - nice dude - really capturing the overloard aspect here - character looks very powerful. I really like the hair crown thing from the first. Haven't looked to see if you posted a final yet..
Rushwolf - Interestgin piece. I like the pose and the idea that her gown is levitating - the costume design is not as menacing..
vorace - evil dark, nice. Could maybe be made to loook more feminine..
dwinbotp - I like the medieval armor thing - and nice strokes. I am not 100% on the breast plate - it looks like it was designed to show maximum cleavage, wonder if maybe could be made to be more functional
Ghostrbush -very cool - really liking the style here
sentinal - great job. Loaded with personality - great strokes
villa - so cool! diggin the face on this much. Maybe innovate more witht he costumne
areve looks good dude - some cool stuff going on here!
decaying lolita - nice style! looks like you are still working. But digging the costume.
grey - nice sketch. Not very evil or overloardy - but nice job.
Rob - nice - got lots of characters in there!
wish I had more time to comment - great JOB EVERYONE!

A freebie for the SW expanded universe fan-addicts:
606920
Barenda Reiz was a scientist at the Jedi Academy in the early Republic, the leading expert of her time on the relationship between the Force and light saber crystals. She was also considered one of the most beautiful women in Coruscant until an explosion during an unauthorized experiment robbed her of both her appearance and her faith in the Jedi philosophy, leaving thousands of crystal shards embedded in her body that could not be removed without killing her. Though it was solely due to her own actions, Reiz blamed the Academy for the accident.
Knowing of her disaffection from the Jedi, a young Darth Sidious, always alert to the possibility of acquiring a weapon against the Jedi, encouraged Reiz to continue her research and made sure she was always well-funded. Though not a Force adept, Riez used her knowledge to create a life-support suit that also used the power of the crystal in her body to amplify the natural Force talent all living things possess. Sidious trained her in the use of the artifically-boosted Force powers, and would have granted her apprenticeship if not for the realization that she would likely come to exceed his own Force power levels. Reluctantly he acted to remove the threat to his own power.
Fortunately the Force amplifier technology could never be duplicated, as it depended upon the crystal shards Reiz had absorbed, a condition Sidous was never able to repeat despite many deadly experiments along those lines.

Ok, so I was playing with the image that I made for the COW, overlaying and mirroring images and I started noticing this form coming through. It isn't finished enough for the polls(and probably wouldn't be accepted for CHOW since it wasn't entirely created for this topic from scratch) but I thought she looked interesting so I hope you don't mind the post. If it's against the rules I'll remove it.
The face was done in pencil then hit with selective color layers and painter. As often happens with things that I work on for CA it has inspired me to do some other pieces for myself.

Finished mine and wrote a story for it I have had on my mind since I started it. :)
Jedi Master Sifo-Dias visited the cloners in the Kamino system to make the order for the clone troopers for the upcoming war he had forseen in his vision. After submitting the order, he found an unusual Kaminoan girl named Joan Del-Mar. She had an unusual high concentration of midichlorians in her blood. With her parents approval she traveled with him to the Jedi temple to begin her training to become a Jedi. Sifo-Dias friend count Dooku saw her potential and helped in the training. Joan had an unusual ability, with the force she could use cloth as deadly weapons to ensnare and strangel those she dueled with the help of her robe which she split up in stripes. When not in battle, the stripes floated around like snakes in the air, creating a living robe.
Many years later Count Dooku betrayed his friend and killed him in order to show his alligeance with Darth Sidious, he ensnared Joan with his lies about that the Jedi's had killed her master for treason. She became his disciple and with her anger towards the Jedi she turned to the dark side. She was now Darth Juuno.
The years passed and she studied the cloning techniques of her people and perfected it. While Dooku fought the Jedi's on the battlefield, Darth Juuno worked from the inside. She cloned senates men and disposed of the originals in order to get her and her masters intrests seen to in the senate.
As Count Dooku were killed by Anakin Skywalker she was left without a master, and continued on her own, cloning senates men and monarks and presidents of planets in order to get as much power as possible.

DecayingLolita: why do you hate it?! I love this pic! You always have the most awesome faces and costumes- this is one of my favs.
Lord M: cool pic and kudos on doing a kaminoan. I think I liked it better without the thin yellow line edging the cloak and skirt though?

william b hand: this one seems a lot more dramatic than the first. I like it better
agenda-b: cool style (and I like the battle going on in the bg too)
ionic: love where you're going with the second one (although I like the first too- personally I'm digging the second color combination more)
mj alcazar: like the moody lighting. I think someone mentioned adding a few more intense highlights from the lightsaber? I agree
grey: awesome!
cmalidore: love this pic!
mimer: cool head, very creative. hope you finish!
keeviin: cool pose, but those are some kind of gravity defying boobs! :)
oranje joe: love the moody intense atmosphere. i kinda like the darker bg?
flipnastywebby: awesome background
zimfin: love how casual she is about knocking that guy off the walkway
zilrion: great choice to crop. i like it a lot more this way
tsujni: crazy dynamic style-love it! also interesting choice to make her so much younger than everybody elses
phew- thats just all I've got time for! gotta get back to work. Here's my totally unoriginal and crappy boring picture :( It's been fun to do, and good practice though. This may be my final. But, I definitely have to step back from it for a little while.
------
Darth Impetus:
Survivor of Order 66. Azula Nashida, a Wroonian, fled the Jedi Temple with several other younglings. They were able to escape Coruscant via a merchant ship, but when word got out of the Jedi's betrayal, the younglings found that there was no safe haven.
They were hunted across the span of dozens of planets. With no master to guide them, fear became an integral part of their lives and they formed a close bond to each other. Finally, one by one, they were hunted down and killed. Each death brought more pain, fear, and anger to each of the younglings as they struck out at their attackers.
One day, after brutally murdering an entire village when her last friend was killed, Vader found her. After attempting to duel him, she lost. He saw great potential in her anger and fear and seized the opportunity. She became his agent, doing his bidding across the galaxy.

Not really sure about the story atm.

I'm pretty excited, I feel like this one is my best yet. I've still got to detail up the boots, design the lightsaber hilt, add some color to the lighting, work on the fabric a bit, and I think I'll be all done! (hopefully I know when to stop!)
Oh, and originally I wanted to make the energy coming out of her hand to be red, (a la Dark Rage, Force Drain and things like that) But it wasnt working out so I went with classic force lightning, I'm considering making some lightning current in her chains and adding that into her ever growing backstory, hehe.
I spent quite a while repainting and correcting the legs, I sure hope it's right this time, and I know I need work on my lighting, but I learn more with every piece.
Also, I'd like to thank EVERYONE that takes part in CHOWs: the awesome people who volunteer their time to run things here, everyone who offer encouragement and guidance and crits. Its such a great learning expereince, so thanks everyone.

Oh man deadline is 3:00 today?? I didn't read the small print, I just figured it was March 2 at the end of the day. I probably won't be able to get mine done then, but I'll submit what I can.
