Round #134
Topic:
Colossus from Hell!
Creature Description: The Colossus from Hell is a giant, mammoth (as in BIG), diabolical beast native to Hell. Your interpretation of this idea should focus on the scale of the creature. It could be anything as large as an Oliphant from LOTR to the size of the mountain or bigger! The point is to design a massive, horrific monster that can be clearly seen as only coming from the depths of the netherworld. The narrative you attach to your concept is entirely up to you, but the design must represent a massive species that lives in Hell.
Deadline:
Saturday, 28 February 2009
note: The deadline won't be EXACTLY after a week...it can last up to 24 hours more, i am human and have to work also, you know ;)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to post
In this thread you can post all wips, questions, comments etc
However if you are done with your entry, post the final image in the following thread.

hey mj - does mammoth mean large or a mammoth/elephant/mastodon based animal? Thanks for running this one :D

Some of you may be going, 'huh?' :)
This is my first round of COW as moderator. First I really want to thank Fozzybar for asking me to do this. I learned so much over the last three years participating in COW, and I'm just happy I get to give a little back. I also want to thank yoitisi for taking over the reigns of COW for as long as he did, even with all he is busy with all over CA and especially for his HUGE help in getting me started with my first round.
I decided I wanted to start my first round with a little bit of a bang and with the sort of topic I know has drawn a lot of participation in the past. You can't go wrong in COW when you take a trip to Hell.
I'll be checking in daily to make sure everything is going smoothly, answering any questions and offering any help I can. So, fire up your tablets, post your WIPs, discuss your ideas, offer up the constructive crits, and let see some seriously freaky demonic monstrosities!
Michael Jaecks

THANKS yoitisi. We'll see how rough it gets. I'm just waiting for a few of my old friends to hear the news. ;)
peter john: mammoth = large... that said, elephantesque inspired demonic creatures are entirely welcome as well. But I have edited the creature description for clarity... thanks for pointing it out.

As you can see, COW has a new moderator as of now. Fozzybar needs a bit of rest from handling it's daily business, and I never intended to take over full time, so Michael Jaecks graciously accepted to become the new COW boss. So please be careful with him, it'd be nice if he could stay around for a while ;)
Fozzy and I will stay around to help out if needed, but for any problems you might have bother MJ first :D
Edit: Oops sorry I thought this thread would make more sense if you'd have your say first, so I deleted my first post. Guess I should leave the modding to you from now on :P

Mmm, good choice Fozz. MJ, loves the critters. As do I. Also great choice on the CoW topic, since the last round involving a creature from hell drew in about a billion entries. Interestingly enough I think the winner from the last hell round was actually an elephant spawned from the netherworld. So, it's funny that you should mention the oliphants and mammoths MJ. Well good luck to all, I'll be rolling in here with the most evil and large creature that I can think of ASAP.

February 21st, 2009, 08:03 PM
No prob yoitisi. I think we were both typing at the same time.
Nexus: yer right, nearly a billion entries. Consider this my COW Stimulus Package. And I remember the winning entry from COW 66 as well...
But we can go BIGGER. Good luck everyone.

hell can be a cold place, right...?
the ninth ring of hell in Dante's Inferno was a lake of ice.
The "western" concept of hell is sort of based on the fire and brimstone archetype. If you take a look at things like the Buddhist structure of hell (the cold and hot Narakas) things get a lot more varied. For instance, in a system based on reincarnation you may suffer in hell long enough to clear your karma, so you're not going to be suffering for an eternity or infinity. BUT, you'd still be stuck there for a duration of time that seems like an eternity to mortal brains.
Naraka: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naraka_(Buddhism)
Diyu: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diyu
Arbuda – the "blister" Naraka. This is a dark, frozen plain surrounded by icy mountains and continually swept by blizzards. Inhabitants of this world arise fully grown and abide life-long naked and alone, while the cold raises blisters upon their bodies. The length of life in this Naraka is said to be the time it would take to empty a barrel of sesame seed if one only took out a single seed every hundred years.
A barrel fits a hell of a lot of sesame seeds! The wikipedia page on Naraka lists the duration of a life in each Naraka using scientific notation... yikes!
So yeah, I think hell can be a cold place. Or a place of burning iron, or drowning, being fried in a pan, etc...

Hell is it? Okay... so you're working your way from the abyss and upwards. I'll see if I can help you on the way with bringing in a true fiery behemoth this round... perhaps, perhaps..

Lacrymosa: sorry to hear about the tablet. I've been there myself. These days I keep a small spare just in case. Gently used models are pretty easy to score cheap on eBay (Intuous on down, I'm mean...) Have you tried hooking it back up to the computer and wiggling/finessing the wire a little back into the tablet? This happened to me once. The contacts inside just got a little messed up after a fall, but I was always able to get the tablet working if I played with it. Just an idea.
peter john makes a good point with the Dante reference. Another I can think of is in Dungeons and Dragons, where the eigth layer of Hell, Cania, is a vast frozen wasteland. It's master, Mephisotoheles, spends many an hour in his frozen castle perfecting the art of "Hellfire," according to the 3.5 edition rulebooks. There's a marriage of fire and ice there.
Look, if you want to in the cold direction and you do it well, I'll certainly accept the interpretation. Cold or hot, though, the real point to your creature design is that it is clearly demonic/diabolical and that it is massive.
Ah HA! Cloister is gonna start making Elvis songs stick in my head again. Welcome, and yes, please, put the baby away and paint your heart out. (kidding of course about putting Ina in the pantry... give her a little ah-choo from me. :) )
Everyone else: Looking forward to seeing your first WIPs!

I never got past thumbs and some sketches last COW round due to lack of time. BUT this topic sounds way too awesome to not enter...
Congratulations on becoming ringmaster, Jaecks! And ofcourse, thanks for your devotion, Yoitisi!
Now I'll be off sharpening my wacom pen and adding water to my PS colorpicker.
PS: will those COW medal like things start to appear again next to user's names after winning a round?

This seems to be taking off quite okay so far, thanks again MJ :)
Bralt Hannicart: We're looking into that now, since it requires some privileges beyond just being a moderator in here. Don't worry, if we can't work something out we'll just drag Fozzy back in here once in a while to update those :P

Congrats Jaecks! Awesome topic this week I just had to enter, sad that I couldn't make it last week. Here is just a quick draft of what I came up with so far. It doesn't look too colossusy, but I'll figure it out somehow.

Cookiedough
February 22nd, 2009, 08:17 AM
I've never entered a COW, mostly cos i dunno how to go about it. However, with this topic, what's the position about mythological creatures that have scared people? For instance Kraken, Cthulhu and such? Those will be rejected if it's entered? How original does this have to be?
Michael Jaecks
February 22nd, 2009, 09:17 AM
Your design should be original and your own creation.
That said, if you take a look through some of the past rounds of COW, you'll notice we all take inspiration from the past, as well as the natural world, and that inspiration informs our work.
But instead of painting HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu
You should paint Cookiedough's _____________ (fill in the blank.)
Also, keep in mind... monsters like Cthulhu, The Kraken, Medusa, etc are really unique entities.. ie, they're technically characters according to the COW rules. Be sure to make your design a member of a massive species native to Hell.

Okay, first post on CA! Fancied getting involved with this COW, although I may well not make the date as I'm super busy at the moment.
Here are a couple of rough doodles of my initial ideas for my "Colossus from Hell!" the Tortuant - a species born and bred purely to torture the dammed souls of hell. First image is a rough sketch of my initial anatomy ideas (plus scale), the second a more detailed image of the head. I imagine that it's spines and venom cause horrifying nightmares and hallucinations, and can induce every kind of pain known and unkown to man.
I'm going for a spidery kind of creature, but want it to appear kind of fleshy and spikey rather than hairy - basically I'm trying to take what I find scariest and most repulsive in the natural world as inspiration for my creature. At the moment it is perhaps a little too spidery and I want to experiment and make it a bit more unique.

Kin - I like the bird thing going on (crows are awesome to draw) the multiple eye thing ups the creep factor by 20.
FastArt - I think you should go with the bunny, really. Giant bunnies are scary.
Wacky Wackowski - I really like this idea a ton. Bull + Architecture head. nice. The Architecture will be really help you pull off the impression of scale I think.
Tipa - What will you do for scale? The realistically proportioned head makes it feel a bit small. You could certainly pull it off with some atmospheric depth effects, but you may want to try messing with the head scale. Wacky, I Think, will have an easier time of it, due to the temples on the bulls head, but I think it may be tougher for you with your current design.
My 20 minute brainstorm sketches. My 5 year old is leaning towards the first one on the left. I like that or the 3rd one.

I was wondering if since this is in hell, is it OK to show suffering humanoids?
maybe the colossus feasts on their sad souls.
Wacky Wackowski
February 22nd, 2009, 05:51 PM
Michael Morisse: Looking back at several of the previous COW winners, it seems like it's ok to show humanoids as long as they are not the creature. Might be one of those things you use to help show scale. I was gonna place a yardstick or measuring tape besides mine, but it kinda loses some of that Colossal Beast from Hell feel.
crits:
kin- so far it is hard to 'read' what your image is. would also like to see the relative scale you're thinking of for this.
joey b- i wouldn't mind seeing that thing bigger. i get the feeling of 'big' out of something that size, but for it to be 'colossal' i think it should be bigger.
fast art- i am leaning towards your design that looks like the wooden log with 2 flames by it. right now it looks a little quirky, but i think there's a lot of potential there for something pretty unique... is this too humanoid for the COW?
wilko- look up the vinegaroon (interestingly shaped pedipalps). it's related to spiders. as far as other repulsive things from the natural world... what do you think of lampreys, centipedes, tapeworms, etc?
tipa- try to get that little something extra that will distinquish this from centaurs or satyrs and give it that hellish quality.
matthewAllen- :D yeah, i like the first one the best, but it is a little easier to read what you were thinking with that one. perhaps develop that 3rd one more because i'm seeing a smiley face on there right now (a nice demon?)

Ok, well here's the first part of my process. I learned this from MikeCorriero, veteran CoWer who has moved on to bigger and better. Essentially you make a nondescript squiggle or series of shapes and then you copy that layer and flip it horizontally. From there, you can even copy it again and flip it vertically. Then if you're feeling especially fancy you can start taking different thumbs and combining them. For example, you think one piece looks like a head and then you attach it to a thumb that you feel compliments it for the body and then use other bits for limbs. It's kinda like Voltron, the more of these things you have the better. This generates a ton of shapes to work with very quickly. I cranked these 16 out in about an hour. I can do it a little quicker normally but it's late and I work third shift. That's all for now. Ill probably combine a few of these but this is good for a first pass. Nice work so far all.

.s. : Just the tiny red X of dom is showing up on my end. Did you pull it down because of the humanoid factor...?
A note to all: I'm not wholly opposed to bipedal creatures that stand somewhat erect and walk with their head looking forward. That said, be really careful about paying attention to such a creature's proportions, stance, posture, muscle-to-bone-to-body fat ratios, scale and so on. A gorilla looks very, very different from a man in a gorilla suit. The former is considered an acceptable creature within the general COW rules, the latter is not.
Thanks to all for the continued well wishes, and especially to Fozzy who made it all possible. :)

This is my entry and story at an almost finished state. Comments are welcome of course. I will hopefully find some time to work some more on it later this week... oh, and yes, I focused on size this time ;)
No one could say there hadn’t been signs of warning. Ever since the new skyscraper was raised the city had changed. The vast increase in reports of missing persons should by itself have been enough for the authorities to take action. The Dagherion Tower – instantly nicknamed the Devil’s Building, and later The Dark Cloister - had not only been the centre of many weird events and extraordinary sounds, but had also literally emptied every block surrounding it, causing shops to close and firms to look for office space elsewhere.
As usual though, the cases were sloppily investigated, and the forces put in place to uphold order were too busy elsewhere. But then again, what could they have done? After all, the last department with knowledge enough to deal with the matter closed down in 1890. Necromancy and Demonology simply did not exist in contemporary consciousness. Not until right now.
They had managed to summon an Ancient One. A Ghartharian Rox, the most massive of furies in the nine levels of Hell had arrived. Everyone beheld it with utter presence. Fear was the name of the day. We all stood still and stared at what was left of reality, and we all knew; there would be no memories of this day.

Here's the sketch so far... Hope I'll have time to finish this, I'm still clueless about how to paint at a good speed..
A bit of text, need works too, but you get the idea. Evidently, the 'diggers' will be changed for a real name.
Legends in hell tell that these colossus, the 'diggers', were created long before the first creature falled in the fiery abyss. Decendents from a world where only gods existed, the 'diggers' were sent in the dead lands that we now know as hell. Durings uncomptable years, they have digged constantly, slowly creating hell's multiples layers.
Eating the corrupted earth and rocks, the diggers extracted negative energy from it and turned it into smokes to fill the infinite tunnels.
While they were many at first, only a very few of them are still alive. The occupants that were regulary thrown down in the pits took the decision to hunt these creatures. The hunt stopped their work for good, at an unfinished nine levels.

A big shout out to Michael Jaecks. Hey thanks for taking over COW! I've been a big COW fan for a while now and love to participate whenever I can. So any mod who keeps it alive is a friend of mine. wow! So much amazing inspiration just looking at the WIPs that are being posted here~ Blobs, your creature is quite astounding, even during the sketch stage. I can just see the skin texture festering and everything. Marco... your coloring makes me just want to give up now. And I love the roach like feel to the creature's head. Buddha Bear, you should get some sort of texture going on your creature's hind legs. Leathery, if you want to run with the t-rex idea, or maybe something slimy and gross... :D
I'll be posting my ideas soon, once I finish messing around and am within reach of a scanner...

Buddha Bear- Hi :) I know is just wip yet but I would throw some more organic details on him like you have on your sketches. Stuff that shows how the beast anatomy works.
Marco Mazzoni- Great design! Loving the scale and mood :) I wonder how that tail ends..
blobs- Very solid designs man, I like the second on pecil the most, maybe going further with scale?
Tipa- Nice colors! (maybe too happy for a hellish moment? just my taste anyway..) About scale I would move the city/castle to be below the horizon, that way would appear to be closer to the viewer than the goat beast, making him to look biger given the position in space and size relations of the elements (hopa that makes sense.. me english no well :P)
MoHog- Disgusting big bug XD I would go ahead with the spikes, will look creepier
David79- Massive beasts! grat scale :D I like the two on the left, maybe the on on the bottom looks less hell classic..
Althael- Thats a creepy animal man! would like to see more of his body though
Mara644- I would say its a bit too human yes, mostly the legs and hands, the rest is cool :)
grey- wow thats big! and creepy! i'll be waiting for some color
Cloister- Seems you realy liked the scale and hell idea man, Great job! only thing bothering me is the buildings roof tops, are all flat. If you work that a little will look lots more realistic and scary :)
kosmo975- nice! maybe make it bigger?
Mr.Wittmann- Cool design! nice how he is looking really big even without any scale reference :)
FAST ART- Like it! looks misterious (love the sketches too, gerat ideas!)
Irish_Jim- Crazy! something to show scale would be cool
matthewAllen- I like the 5 beast sketch. And thats an ugly (lady?) monster. I bet that tongue is all covered with poisonous fluids..... >_<
.s.- I like the idea of the horns from the neck, and looks realy solid (too human may be?)
Nexus- I like the two bottom ones from the 2nd column, nice thumbs.
Wacky Wackowski- Surrealistic idea, I like it :)
Wilko- Scary beast man, reminds me of paramites from oddworld universe :D
Joey-b- Nice design, looks dangerous!
Kin- Nice! looks unavoidavle :O
Michael Jaecks- Good luck with the job! :)
And here is my concept,
Volcanum Magmanimum: He not only disguises as a volcano, he is almost the actual volcano!! hiding in mountains, or creating his own stone shelter with the magma he throws over the centuries. He can pop out whenever is needed to bring fear and destruction upon all life forms on the surface of earth!!
(it also comes in his mini version Volcanum Puppetae. Perfect for terrorizing every inhabitant of your little ant farm!!)

Here's what I have for now. Will finish this baby tomorrow with some colors. Not too sure yet what to do with the background...and what colors to use?

My first version had a giant jesus like growth on it's belly in a position that suggested constant rape by this demonic creature...I decided to scrap that idea though I like it better than the Throne/command chair thing I have now. Oh well...

TimM - Whoops, sorry if I snatched your concept. It was accidental, I promise.
joiton - Thanks fer the kind words. I added the silhouette of a little explorer partway through evacuating his bowels into his trousers for scale. You have pretty sweet thumbnails, I like the hidden-in-the-earth predator idea.
Buddha Bear - I'd recommend working to define some good musculature in the legs and sides a la T-Rex here (http://www.ansp.org/museum/dinohall/images/walters_tyrannosaurus.jpg). Perhaps arch the spine a bit to give it more lunge, know what I mean?
Bralt Hannicart - Beautifully Geiger-esque abomination! The throne idea works much better aesthetically, I think, than the Jesus-Kuato-raping one. Have you given any thoughts to sharpening some of those protruding ribs?
Marco Mazzoni - Great textures! Love the corpsey-fishy look on the beast.
blobs - I'm diggin' the way your colossi all have a real visual sense of weight; there's visible volume in their shape.
Cloister - Daaaaang. You took that "colossus" bit pretty seriously. I like!
Izer - You nailed the pose on that one, the balance is perfect.
matthewAllen - It's like reading 'the Hungry Caterpillar' whilst under the influence of strong hallucinogens. Wonderfully executed final sketch.
Here's my next step, shaded over about 1.5 hours in Photoshop. Started from a scanned ink drawing, and I'll color it sometime in the next couple days.
Good submissions all around!

Going to post a little WIP tomorrow. Don't you all wait up for it now you hear! I gots to get my beauty sleep. Oh yah, the nightmares. Now I'm going to look like one of these creatures in the morning.

Cloister: this is a real giant-creature.. i like how the red color is used in the background.. i think your picture is right now the best devinition of a `giant´ hell creature.. great done
David79: the studys looks great.. keep workin on that
Marco Mazzoni: your painting-style is really great. are u using painter or photoshop?
matthewAllen: great sketches
joiton: thanks :)
blobs: really great sketches..
so here is my creature.. thought about a story for that: after millions of damned warriors fall in the battelfield the demon from hell cames out to catch all the souls..
..hm.. but i don´t really like this peace and i think i will make some new sketches and make something that is more fresh than that

Hey Guys,
Great work so far! This should be one of the best COWs ever...
I've been working on this for a while and am thinking of going in a different direction...I want to push the idea further and have come up with a new rough attached last...let me know what you guys think so far.

Great work everyone. And thanks Michael Jaecks for taking over COW!
I went with a underwater/drowning hell concept. The beast catches it's prey with it's tentacles and pulls them down, plays with them for a while, lets them swim to the surface when they are nearly drowned only to pull them underwater again. when it get's bored it eats them.

Update on page 2… more will come, I think.
Fozzybar: Either you’re dead or your not the king. You can’t have it both ways! ;) Unless you come back in an undead topic of course...
Wacky: Looks very mythological and interesting.
Grey: Thanks! It is very uncertain in your sketch, how the creature looks. Does it have hind-legs? Big or small butt? … Perhaps a less frontal point of view?
Marco: Good to see you on the round. You always bring nice stuff to cow. The current image looks interesting but is VERY dark, at least on my screen.
Scott the blob: Thanks! Nice sketches man!. I really like that muscle power-elephant. You should finish that one off topic, I think.
Tipa: Look to the breasts of your creature and try to position them according to what you know about perspective (a line towards a point on the horizon and all that). The furthest breast should be lower unless he is seriously leaning this way.
Joiton: Thanks! Yes, I know the city is very naïve-looking. I have done something to change that a bit in my recent update. Thanks for the constructive crits!
Dwinbotp: Looks very interesting.. nice character expression.
Irish Jim: Thanks! Nice hydra heads!
Fast Art: Cool Mumin-like creature. I like the mood.
Vegas: is rocking again. Nice postures! I really like the look of the lower right beast in the four sketches image. The coloured one is likable as well. Good work so far!
Someone.. please try to bend the rules a little... just something to test out the new mod !? ;)

joey-b. Liked the horns in the face,
Wacky Wackowski. I don't find it ridiculous, kinda cool actually, but I'm not sure about the human legs
FastArt, I voted for the bunny! Love it so far. I really thougth that the two flames were neat, but the one on the head looks awesome.
Bralt Hannicart. I like your second idea. The first one is was also ideollogically dangerous hehehe. The head looks freaking wicked, reminds me the Chikka larva of Metroid Prime Echoes.
Irish Jim. The heads looks great and the little tentacle like stuff covering the body. Check out the spine, it kinda breaks the style.
Buddha Bear. I seconf Irish Jim, work in the muscles, it doesn't seem that the creature can stand to much on their feet.
Cloister. That is COLOSSUS...
blobs. I'm go for the second one, the first one recalls to much and elephant, but the body is cool indeed. The second ond is much more fitting I think.
dwinbotp. Repulsing, wich of course means "way to go!"
matthewAllen. Like it so far.
VegasMike. Good to see you round' here! I just can say that I like the bigger mouth of the sketch also the pose looks really cool on the sketches but the colors look great. Reminds me Shadowgate hehehhe.
Benu. I just can say this: Larger :)
Sorry for those who I didn't gave feed back, they were too much for me! latter I will recheck everyone, great wips so far.
FozzyBar, we salute you wherever you are. Michael Jaecks nice to have you as the new boss around, a new COW era indeed, hope to see more of your entries too.

joiton - extended the format so you can see that tail... perhaps some things are better left unseen, huh? ;)
FAST ART - Thanks, I'm digging your style as well. I use photoshop with some painterly brushes. I'm just too damn clumbsy in Painter
Cloister - Thanks man, it's good to be back. Looks like you're still brining your own quality entries :) It is pretty dark for now, though I think I'm going to keep it in the lower values with a few ticks of light to make it pop
Here's my update for the day, back to real work for me

February 24th, 2009, 04:22 PM
Ok, well here's some more progress. After I choose about 4 thumbs that I like I start doing some more finished linework designs to get a feel for which ones I like most. I narrowed it down to two this time and was happy to find I didn't need to draw all four before I was confident with the design I wanted. Then I throw down some colors and play around until I'm satisfied.
The concept thus far is something along the lines of a living furnace. The creature is huge and resides beneath hell in it's deepest bowels. The colossus uses its shovel-like forelimbs to gather up depraved souls. It then drops them into its burning maw and incinerates them for all time. This process provides the heat which makes hell so...hellish. Think along the lines of those old timey engines with a crew of sweating dudes shoveling coal into the furnace and you have the idea of where this is going.

Bralt, I know you're not done, but could you give us some indicator of the creature's size? Even if it's just one of those small stick figure symbols folks use to indicate scale in the margins. I love the surrealist placement of the different body parts, and certainly will accept wild creatures made of human looking body parts in perverse combinations like this, but the human arms arm making it seem a bit smaller than "Colossus" without some other element indicating the scale.

Jaecks, I should've pointed out the throne with the cloacked figure on it...up the stairs between its frontal arms! right below it's neck. That and the nooses hanging from the fingers. But I will most likely bring the entire image back to greyscales and add more detail. I'm not happy with it at all.

Bralt - coming along nicely, I noticed the nooses so scale didn't bother me, maybe make the hooded figure more obvious? I really dig the initial concept, evil evil evil . . .
Mara664 - that painting's shaping up nicely
matthewallen - the caterpillar beast is a nice solution, looking forward to the painted version

Sad thing is, and I don't know if you call it genius or insanity, but I was thinking that too. Imagine what their offspring would be. Samolo - Yeeeeah, I'm not terribly pleased with the spine, either, but from an aesthetic standpoint the original back just felt plain. I experimented with some different shapes, but couldn't find anything I liked better than that, so -whoop- there it is.
MatthewAllen - of the three I think the middle one works best, but that red is in such stark contract to the rest of the creature that I find it off-putting. I myself would tone it down with some blue to more of a maroon color, but it's your CHOW.
Here's the Photoshop of just the line art and a color glaze layer. I'm saving the final (combination of shadow & color) with adjustment layers and final tweaks for the finals thread to preserve a little bit of mystery.
The festering boils will actually be glowing faint green, and I've added dribbles of the nasty stuff where some have burst, which is missing from this image because it's on a separate layer.

Aaaanyways, I call the species Ancient Gluttons, 'cos the idea is they're the souls of the first Gluttons, now doomed to forever eat from the rivers of filth (and anything unlucky enough to be in them), and still not be sated. Their rolls of fat have blinded and effectively immobilised them, but they still eat anything within reach.

Some crits:
Darkwolf- Haha, that's a cool concept. But the body feels blobby and lacks anatomy, so get some reference of fat people and dogs!
kosmo975- Nice painterly style.
Irish Jim- Awesome heads! There are some perspective issues with the feet though.
matthew Allen- I like the first with the dark clouds the most, but that's just me.
Peanut Brittle- I don't think it looks too humanoid. The arms look like they have a joint between shoulder and elbow.
Pierropod- I kike the upper part if the face a lot, but not the mouth, I don't really know why.
Wacky Wackowsky- I hope you finish that, too.
grey- I wouldn't want to stand in this thing'S way! Good composition, looks dynamic. And nice colors too.
darkly- omg, a giant vagina dentata on legs! Maybe you should work on her hindquarter, they look a bit formless now, but the face is awesome.
Bralt- Creepy. Very Giger-like, coming along well. I didn't notice the nooses and the figure on the throne at first, too.
Mara644- Very nice colors, it looks almost like watercolor.
CCThrom- Mh, that's a massive creature.
Nexus- you should include something that shows the scale of the creature. It doesn't look very big now.
Marco Mazzoni- It is still very dark and hard to read in some places. Apart from that, the creature looks good and the picture has a very gloomy mood.
samolo- Good approach for a hell creature. There a so many creepy deepsea critters down there.
VegasMike- Just awesome. The right wing's pose looks weird, I don't think a wing can fold like that.

Very nice Benu, its interesting to see the ocean as hell compared to the mostly land based ideas in this thread.
For my own submission I'm debating if I like skull sitting in its chest, thinking about replacing it with a goats skull or possible just removing it. Also considering shortening the legs to make the creature look more apelike and suggesting that while it can sit upright it moves on all fours.

Thanks for commenting ! I know, the mouth was the hardest thinks for me to do on is drawing, I didn't find a nice mouth, I hope with the colorization it will be better :) I tried to draw a mouth who opened in four parts. I don't know if we can see that.

Here i go:
Benu: It works so much better with the new colors. A dark abyss but with scattered light from the eternal fires pouring through the water. Nice, fresh and original.
Blobs: That looks huge! Loose and confident strokes again. I really need to learn that.
Joey-B: I prefered the rhino! But let's wait and see where you'll take this.
Morisse: I like the first one. A giant bug like thing from hell would be quite cool.
Darkwolf: Be sure to define the shapes a bit more. Right now it looks a bit like a Michelin mascotte shaven puppy. It could work though!
Kosmo975: Cool looking mammoth/bull! Smashing everything in it's destructive path.
Irish_Jim: I like the more classic medieval approach (multiple heads, lots of limbs). Make sure you do some highlights. Perhaps some intense specular highlights to make it slimey and moist? I'm not sure what the bone- like handle protrusions are on it's side. Perhaps that will be explained later?
MatthewAllen: I like it a lot. Looks massive and ugly. I prefer the darkness of the first colortest but it could work in bright daylight too.
Peanut Brittle: Looks evil so far. Can't wait to see more of it.
Pierropod: Awesome looking feet your beast has! I think it's head has a bit too much going on. A nose, a trunk, tusks, a big mouth filled with teeth. I'd leave some of it out...
Wackowski: The cathedral-ish tower on it's head is cool. I do hope no-one lives in there and that he or she does not have a lot of bookcases or likes to build cardhouses...
Mara644: wath out it won't look too humanoid. Apart from that, it's starting to look nice.
CCThrom: It looks cute! Hungry and cute. If you make it's eyes a bit smaller, it would help improve the "colossal" aspect I think.
Nexus: I don't see your creature as something from hell. It looks a almost like an alien incarnation of Buddha. Perhaps a background/setting wouldn't hurt your piece.
MArco Mazzoni: Incredible brushstrokes, colors and...well everything. Love the apocalyptic landscape too.
Samolo: Slap some colors on that sketch! Looks good!
VegasMike: Mmm lot's of huge horns and a dragon-like feel. No way this will look bad in the end. Nice sketches!
Fast Art: Your creature looks really original. Intimidatingly simple but cool shapes.
Buddha Bear: I'm not very fond of those very bright yellow teeth. Try to paint with thicker brushes instead of scribbly lines. Perhaps if color seems too hard to get right from the start, try in greyscales with just black and white as your colors. Later, you can give it as much color as you want on layers with different blending modes. It is perhaps not the best way or the fastest, but you will learn to concentrate more on shapes and values and less on color. Keep drawing!
Izer: Welcome! I think your creature has a bit too much different types of scales but overall, it is looking good.
dwinbotp: The blob meets Half Life Headcrabs! Looks good, like the dynamic perspective!
Joiton: Awesome idea you have going with those volcano sketches. Interesting!
Tipa: To me, it looks a bit too much like a faun mixed with a centaur. It could work but it has to look way more evil. Try to desaturate some of those colors and work on colordepth!
MoHog: Add those spikes!
David79: Very cool thumbnails. I like them all!
Althael: Your image has a lot going on. The creature's head is a bit cluttered with almost random shapes. Too bad so much of the creature is hidden by the cave wall. Perhaps you could try and concentrate on the creature alone and add a background later?
Cloister: Thumbs up! Evil!
Mr Wittman: A tad bit generic, but it's very sharp and demonic looking. Looking forward to the colors.
Wilko: I think a giant spider-like creature would look very awesome but don't add a human looking face or skull...it would ruin the image a bit and make it look tacky. But that, ofcourse, is just my opinion!
Kin: Nice sketch. Looks like a woodcut print! A creature with multiple heads is difficult too make it look credible but you certainly succeeded at that.
So, that's it for now. Sorry if there is some faulty (and repetitive) English in my post!

Bralt Hannicalt, read the headings for my posts. These are the steps for my process. The images there are not the final compositions nor even the final designs.

Well, I did actualy. I've no problem with the concept, the idea is really neat. I know these are all sketches, I'm just giving my two cents on what you shared with us so far (like everyone else). And to me, the colors nor the symmetrical look of what you have shown so far does not really convey the story of a giant furnace that burns souls to heat hell.
Nexus
February 25th, 2009, 02:44 PM
Duly noted. The symmetry is an unfortunate result of mirroring shapes to create the silhouette thumbs. That will be rectified in the final composition. The design is more of a color thumb at this point. The crit on the colors is valid. Trying to find some combination of colors that will stand out and contrast nicely with the fiery face and innards. In addition, I dont want the colors to be red/oranges. That's too easy. The most generic demons are always red and orange. So I have a bit of playing left to do with both design and color for this one. Thx.
I like the twisted array of body parts in yours by the by. I know it's finished but it feels soft around the edges. I would say maybe sharpen up some of the edges so that it separates a bit more from the background (try the Unsharp Mask first). Right now its a bit foggy. Which is of course somewhat what you were going for with the doom clouds and dusty plain. However it also has that strong hellish spotlight from above which is going to give you some stronger edges. In addition, you could let some of that light highlight his upper shoulders. I dont think they would be quite that dim since they arent obstructed by the head. Finally, maybe some specular lighting to add a little glisten to his gums and other slimier/slick parts of his body couldnt hurt. Hoped that helped some and sorry I didnt crit earlier.

I usually just sketch the weekly topics in my book and never post anything, but i really need to start becoming familiar with my painter program, so forgive me if i never make it all the way to the finals thread, but I am going to try to start participating in the wip/sketches thread until i become more confident and refined.
Also forgive me for not commenting on everyone individually. The good things i have noticed are a sense of largeness and evilness, some even have a degree of suffering, which works well. The bad things (not bad in a general sense, but more of as per my taste) some seem needlessly complex, as if to add things that require details not to add to the creatures presence, but to add to the amount of time spent on the render. But as I said, I like things clean and simple whenever possible, so I tend to go towards those designs whenever the topic doesnt specifically require dramatic complexity. Still I am always amazed by the talent and diversity displayed by all artists throughout these forums.
So I made a few quick thumbs last night and I had this idea that may not even be in the realms of "OK" for the finals thread because of the body not being in the actual image, I still couldnt resist making a bigger mock up of the idea for the fun of it. I hope even though its just a sketch, the idea translates well. Quick note, i do and did notice that the leg behind the head is not really matched up with it's foot.. thats because I moved the entire leg and foot from the original spot and never really settled on the spot its in now.
Thanks gang, see ya'round

Joey-B: Nice beast! No crits except maybe for the riding-hut pointing too much towards our right direction. The creature turns to our left, but still I think the perspective on the “hut” could be better, and follow the creature more.
Bralt: Thanks! Your creature is starting to scare me! That’s what I lack in my own piece; a really evil, morbid and twisted look. The hell around it works well too. Next time Cow presents a hell-theme I will surely also paint Hell itself. Looks fun! The reaper character might make the pic a little less frightening, taking it more towards a He-Man-like universe than a truly frightening hell.
Peanut: Looks interesting, and evil!
Benu: The hellish look is coming very nicely. Very nightmarish. I like it! But then again, I almost always like your cows…
Blobs: Nice depth there. I’m excited about the final. (Are those blobs on shoulders? ;) )
M. Morrise: Second one is fantastic! And that include the pov. I hope you go with that one, because I can’t wait to see the final. That big cattle-beast just licks those poor souls up like he was going for grass, or examining the poo of some other creature. Very nice sketch/sketches!
matthewAllen: Nice landscape and scene. I would personally go with a frightening sky (towards version 1). The tounge of the beast looks a little slack. Perhaps try some variations there?..
darkly: I think it looks fairly bad-ass! If you erase this dude, I’m truly curious to see what you might come up with. Anyway – nice sketching!
Mara644: I really like the arm-postures of your demon. A truly menacing and scary apparition.
I would love to see a bigger image of this one.
CCThrom: That’s a decisive-looking lump of bad-temper!
Marco Mazzoni: Still looking terrible – in a very good way!
Samolo: Looks interesting!

Darkwolf: I plan on starting the poll Sunday morning-ish Central Standard Time, USA. I'm about six hours behind Europe, if that is of any help. I get up pretty early though, and people in the US might wake up to see the poll started.
But, I am also reasonably flexible and will monitor the last hours closely. If I get the sense that I am getting a lot of high quality, last minute stragglers from folks who spent a lot of time on their entries, they will get in. I'm more interested in people's best effort than I am in having a hair trigger deadline.
That said everyone should plan on a fairly timely poll from me each week. I won't be extending things for long periods of time.

a note about the quality checking for finals...
COW is a weekly exercise and I really expect participants who want to see themselves in the polls to make an effort to make finished, quality work to the best of their ability. Quality work takes time.
I hate singling people out, but I also decided I didn't want to just cut folks in the final hour with no warning either. So I would really like to see Mr. Whitmann and TMG work some more on their entries. Both have strong things going for them as a beginning, but seem rather rushed in execution.
Again, this is not said to be mean or hurtful; my criticism here will always be constructive and respectful. But COW is an important activity on CA where a lot of professionals first cut their chops at the beginning of their careers. COW is an excellent place to hone one's skills, but that only happens if people put their best effort into it.
Thanks.

Penumbra: PLEASE say you'll post for the poll. Don't tease like that. I don't fully understand what is going on with its anatomy, but I don't think I should either. It's gorgeous and hellish and colossal and it belongs in the poll for sure...
xgabo: Humanoidish? Yep. Will I pull it? Nope. As long as something is not overtly humanoid and characterish, quality trumps skirting the humanoid rule. It's in.
joey-b: Nice! The color is understated, attractive and believeable.
Earlier in the week I mentioned going through and making comments on all the entries, but as it has worked out, I've been making them in dribs and drabs here and there all week. If I have missed anyone or if anyone wants a comment from me that didn't get one, shout it out now. One of the things I want to do as the new mod is to make sure the new folks are getting a little attention too. It's hard to learn something new when you feel like you're shouting in a vacuum.
Again, for everyone: the plan is to set up the new poll Sunday morningish. Will play it by ear if I notice a last minute deluge of entries.

Bralt Hannicart - Thanks for the tip... I worked on reducing my creature's eye. Your creature is truly twisted, nice job!
grey - I really like your stylization and use of color. The only thing that confuses me though, is the fire in the middle of his face. I can't read if his nose is just on fire, or if there's an open cavity and the fire is shining out.
John Bridges - Nice! I love your painterly rendering... not sure I buy that those chains could even slow him down.

The entries look great so far. Great work everyone. I won't be able to finish my entry so It'll just be the start of my first CA sketch book. I'm still getting the hang of what's what's and where everything is but the COW forum I'll definitely follow and attempt to join In. I'll be sure to vote on this one though, best of luck to you all.
I'm not sure of the policy on critiques/ comments but I went back and did a few, apologies to anyone i have missed and to those who didn't want a critique/comment (just ignore it).
Michael Morisee - Pretty sweet, looks like a massive fire Aardvark.
Peanut Brittle - Really nice and it really feels massive.
daielablanco - Looks like it will turn out well with some work, It feels like it needs to be grounded, like it's not quite apart of your scene, also maybe research some anatomy as well too really define this creature, I suggest canine anatomy. Also many a little darker of a scene over all.
CCThrom - It's like a mean green hell machine, Interesting colors.
I am Joey-b - Looks pretty cool so far, I like the rider ( I didn't see anyone else go that way ), but yeah it's a good idea, Maybe some clean up and some different textures, not so much a scalier look but maybe a burnt/torn skin.
xgabo - That's a large creature for sure, looks good though, really the only things that stick out are the perspective of the creature and the land underneath (not sure if anyone pointed that out), also maybe making the background a little darker so the creature doesn't blend so much, although hazing the creature with smoke could give it a ominous look to it, just some mystery.
funghi from yuggoth - Neat, maybe some more details on the creature and some more background. Have fun with that wacom.
Penumbra - Large Image for sure, having a hard time making out what's what's what though, looks almost like a sliver creature from MTG.
Wixxi - I dig the step by step, very cool looks like it'll turn out well, maybe some fire breathe?
Wacky Wackowski - That's definitely different, looking good though.
Benu - Pretty insane looking creature, all i can say is those people are screwed for sure.
dwindotp - Oh looks like a beetle, or a giant brain, cool.
Marco Mazzoni - Yeah that's demonic for sure, the roach look would gross people people out for sure.
VegasMike - Awesome pose on that and it's real mean looking. Background in mind?
John Bridges - Nice mix of creatures, definitely unique, I'm not entirely sure that little chain would hold that beast though. Also not sure if anyone noticed and it mite just be me but the lightning bolt and his beak seem it intersect almost feels like it's beak is broken and just ''there'', mite just be what you're going for just thought I'd throw that out.
realitychek - Late is better then never, looks like you have a mix of ideas goin there, suggest maybe defining/rendering it a bit more.
Hexism - Not diggin' the background color myself, the pose seems a bit off maybe his back foot is to close to his body, feels stiff.
destinyapocalypse - Yeah definitely full body on that, looks like It would turn out pretty cool. I wouldn't worry about your English, let your work do the talkin'. Best of luck.
grey - Nice action you got goin' on there, little darker though, people are Innately scared of the dark and the things that could be in the dark, especially large aggressive hell beasts.
blobs - Pretty massive, just maybe not to mean looking, I like the landscape, like to maybe see some magma or fire though.
Darkwolf - Keep it up, looks like It''s comein' along, add a background of sorts (suggest some sort of mountains, smaller the better for scale, maybe also since hes laying down maybe In a valley of sorts), refine some of the detail and colors. Maybe some action or a pose, but like I suggested you can do things with what you have now. Best of luck.
Lanista - It's a competition and It's also NOT one at the same time. Try to think of It in terms of direction, these challenges give direction into what it's like to work for real, using timeliness, guidelines and having competition, this also provides a place to hone those skills you've learned and also learn more skills from other artist and gives us a chance to give back to the art community. also people have different ways of doing things of course and not everyone likes everything complex, simple, or using different media, but having access to these differences Is what it's about, some day no doubt on here you'll be inspired by something you mite not have liked months before. So take the good with the bad, and try to remember its not that serious, If art ever looses It's fun It then becomes work and we all know what we say about work. Best of luck and hope to see your work in later threads.
Well that's about it. Good luck.

VegasMike: I'm really looking forward to seeing that finished, like Izer I'm curious as to what kind of background your going to use.
Michael Morrise: I do think the value changed was an improvement, I think the streaks of lava in the foreground though look a bit too cool now. Re adding a few subtle highlights to that area might address that without being overwhelming.
Benu: I think you had a good composition going with the darks around the edges, I like the detail you've added but fading some of it towards black, particularly in the bottom left corner might make the creature pop out a bit more.
Almost finished, with my own work.

Hell! This round is certainly happening!
Penumbra: That's a piece of art!
Xgabo: Love those horns and the "face".
Joey-B: I'm glad you fired that first engineer. ;) The new one knows his trade.
Peanut: You're scaring me...
Wacky: Seems like you have a link with the outer planes... I like it!
benu: That face is so frightening.
dwinbotp: Nice final!

Hey thanks Cloister!
MJ- i think its kinda weird when u do good art u can just ignore the brief of species and humanoid.. i tried my very best not to make it humanoid and to not add to much stuff that would make this a character.. but i guess i just need to improve my skills.

I don't think Micheal Jaecks ment it like that, he's just saying, if you put alot of effort in it, and you forgot or didn't know it couldn't be humanoid it's not that big a deal.

Thanks for the support, everybody, but this one's just not working out for me right now... think I'll practice for a bit before I try again... It was really cool, and I hope next time I do better... Izer, mountains in the background were indeed where I was hoping to go (with a nice lake of excrement as the foreground... yummy!), but I think I've lost confidence in this one...

Joey-B:As I believe I said at the top, and will continue to maintain throughout, there is a difference between a gorilla and a guy in a gorilla suit. I'm not going to cut everything that walks on two legs with it's head held forward. But, it might be a difficult line for some to dance around, which is why we always seem to discuss the humanoid rule again and again in this forum. And yes, quality matters.
That said, it's not like I'd let Ingres drop one of his nudes into the finals thread just because it's a masterpiece.

dwinbotp - great creature, your version in final is even better, the eyes are a good touch
michael morisse - I think that looks better, puts more emphasis on the cool creature design and less on the activity of the bkgd/foreground, glad you found my crit useful
izer - you may have a point, I felt my first version was too murky and might have overcompensated values a bit; I brought some darker tones back into the final burn, thx for the input

Just a technical note for new folks unfamilliar with using the attachment manager in the finals thread... you will be uploading your image to CA from your computer, not Photobucket. There's no longer any need for outside image hosting. You'll be putting your image right on CA just like you would upload it to Photobucket...

The poll will not start until sometime Sunday CST for the US. I am about 6 hours behind GMT (I think)... suffice to say folks have plenty of time for whatever tweaks and revisions they want to work on.
Again, I will repeat this... I am more interested in high quality entries than I am about being a hardass with the deadline. So if I wake up tomorrow morning and still see new stuff posting, I'll make an announcement then about when I would like to wrap things up.
Joey-B: No worries. We're cool. The humanoid rule (as well as the others) always deserve some conversation in here if only because there are always new people trying us out for their first week. I'm always happy to discuss my rationale for what I expect in COW.
Cheers, guys. Keep those tablets fired up!
Mydrim: It's an interesting quirky image, but I'm not sure how Hell-themed it looks. Can you tell us more about how you designed this creature and what you're thinking was behind it?

Homeless Horde: I took a look at your sketchbook to sort of get a picture of your skill level. I understand you're young and new to this. I have to say as it stands your entry is really not at the level that would make it to the poll, but there is still time to work on it. I would suggest you have a look around the site and post things in the Critique Center for help with anatomy and design.
And for all: As of this writing we are now about 12-14 hours away from poll time. Get 'em in!

Michael Jaecks: I understand. I really did this for fun. I did not expect to win, considering that I'm competing against people who draw for a living. Thank you though.

darklylove the final entry of yours, I'm more worried about the creature looking as just one really powerful creature as opposed to it being a general species of Hell, maybe you can rectify that, just my 2 cents:) looking great though!

dwinbotp: Thanks! That means a lot. I took a while admiring your entry as well. Great stuff! About the whole one of a species thing; I guess when it was all said and done I didn't convey all that was in my head. This is pretty usual unfortunately  . In concept, I was imagining these colossal demons that were spewed forth from hell to wander the earth just to torment stuff in ancient times. Then slowly one by one they were "conquered" and are now kept in sacred holding areas like Stone Henge. Uh..er, or something like that.
