The Unnatural Redhead
An E. G. Brownstone Mystery
599126
Chapter One
My client's late and probably not lamented husband had given his heart to the wrong woman. Literally.
Skewered to a pentagram drawn in his own blood, he looked like he hadn't ended his affair happily. The blade was of a type I didn't recognize, maybe a custom job. Leave that for the cops to track down. I was more interested in the glossy strand left behind. Crimson it was, no natural shade, and not one out of any bottle you'd pick up at the five 'n' dime, either.
It didn't take long to get a reading. Tall, lithe, with eyes so dark they could drink a man's soul and a figure to die for (and many have, I thought), she was in the midst of a conjuration. I wondered how someone with that kind of power could be careless enough to leave behind such a telltale. Then the faint smirk on her scarlet lips gave me the answer -- it was a calling card, left for me, and only me, to find. I doubt if the crime lab ran its DNA it would even test human.
Looked to be an interesting case...

heres my final, first time coloring from some grayscale on up... I really had fun sketchin this one up... the leg brace action was brought from the idea of getting into it with some supernatural beastys that took E.G.B. for a bit of a ride.... and the stomach grill.... kind of the idea that he could trap spirit types much akin to ghostbuster traps with his own body.... :P fantastic entries all around! :yayca:

My take on Edmund G. Brownstone, paranormal private eye. I wanted him to stand in contrast to the supernatural world he lives in, a hardboiled, stoic and completely capable detective that relys on his sharp wit, knowledge of the occult and, of course, his trusty S&W .357 Magnum. I hope I've improved since my last entry, as Deadred pointed out to me, and I've noticed too, that my skin looks rubbery and fake. I think this looks a little better. I used a mirror for the hand w/ the cigarette and a reference photo for the gun.

"This job has taught me a lot of different things... There are some things that I wish I could scrub from my mind, like you could scrub a mud stain out of a new rug.
Still, there have always been three things I have tried to remember when it comes to my line of work. Three rules that have kept me alive this long...
First: Old, simple, and reliable is the way to go. New and flashy is all well and good when you are trying to impress a dame but, when your life is on the line you need to know that you have gear you can trust to work every time. The fewer moving parts, the less chance gremlins can screw with you.
Second: With the proper preparations... almost any foe, whether it be a drunk, abusive husband, a psychotic stalker, or a 3 ton rock daemon from the 8th ring of the abyss, can be brought down with a .44 magnum.
And Third: In this town... in this line of work... never, never, trust a pretty face...
I don't know why, but for some reason I always seem to have trouble with that last one. Some how I think she knew that when she knocked on my door...
This is going to be a bad week, I can tell already."

So, Only one cut today.
Since the quality was over-all so good, and because we got enough entries to fit them all in the poll, we gave everyone a pass. There were only 4-5 that were on our 'maybe' list.
The only one that didn't make it into polled was not named properly and did not attach wips: Desero. If this is fixed, I'll add it too.

Ho mon...drawing faeries and witches are one thing, but drawing a normal man and making him look cool seems like a really daunting task to me. So I voted for who I think pulled that off really well while keeping it detective-y:
Bumskee, Masque (very bamf detective face), Shannanigan (I thought from the beginning your style would be good for this), Dwinbotp (I like this all around, everything from the trench to the ghost gun to the briefcase. Probably my favorite one), and the guy who drew the old man detective with the glowing green honey comb surrounded by newspaper clippings ( I couldn't find your name on it, but I love the feel of it.)
I also really wanted to vote for markusthebarbarian, but I couldn't decide on any of these five to not vote for. I really liked the face and costume of your fellow as well though.

i voted for FAST ART, but Bumskee - I really like your work and that piece!
FAST ART because of the over all character and style to the painting.

Darn - I guess next time I do CHOW, I'll stick to portrait format - didn't realise landscape would end up so small on the poll - oh well:)
Voted for Burmak, Felida and Vorace.
Wanted to vote for FastArt - it's awesome, but he just doesn't look like a detective to me.
I was a bit surprised by how many conventional detective types there where, but as Stacybean says, drawing a normal man and putting a lot of character into him is difficult - for that my hat goes off to you, Bumskee, sorry, I should have voted for you too:( He really makes me think of Constantine, though.
Some really awesome work here, guys. I learned a LOT on this one and it was serious fun to boot!

My votes.... limited myself to 5.
Dwinbopt - Ok I'm a chick so I'm allowed to vote because I think the character is smexy right? Well too bad, I did. LOL! I think the 3rd eye was very cool, yet subtle and the ghost gun to kill ghosts... great idea!
ChaoticKnight - I like the traditional PI threads on a very non-typical PI... and the wall turning in a Giant Monster... freakin' awesome! Since CHOW is not just about the character design (so I've been told. ;) ), but also the "feel" of the whole piece and its effect on the character... this one is tops for me!
Masque - I just really like it... I can't exactly pin point a reason. I just do. Though.... it could be one of the same reasons I voted for Dwinbot's... :D His outfit, pose and the whole scene reminds me of Kolchak/Nightstalker... of which everyone knows by now, I am a huge fan.
Inkfish - I love this guy, its Watson after seeing better days!
Blobs - Now that is a PARANORMAL PI. really great character design.
As for the ones I didn't vote for... I thought some could have had more "detective" and/or paranormal in the design, a little more complete or had a little more personality to the character but all in all I liked something about all of them. Great job everybody!

Great work everyone!
As usual I limited myself at three votes:
bumskee: simple, elegant and minimal. Showing exactly 3/4 of the character with no background, just a suggestion of atmosphere, impressed me the most.
nateshaw: great atmosphere, I can feel the story behind. The loose rendering and James Dean look cached my eye.
antne: nice comics touch. You put a lot of work and inspiration in this piece, I love all the details, even the joke :)!

I voted for Vorace. I thought it was a very original design, a lot of fun and energy, and really bad-ass.

I voted for Blobs, Fastart, Smokenmirrors, and Dwinbotp.
Blobs: Great looking character.
Fastart: Just a great style, and so many nice elements to the piece as a whole.
Smokenmirrors: Great character, and I love the way you used the light and dark and have some great negative space there.
Dwinbotp: Just great mood on that one.
Great round to everyone. Really looking forward to this next one!

Voted for 3:
Shannanigan: Conveys the brief the best. He's a PI and he does paranormal. No question about what he does or who he is.
Tommoy: Also conveys the concept very well. Reminds me of Ghostbusters, and the pose expresses a ton of emotion.
Jason_Snair: Feels like the most developed character here and the presentation is excellent.

Last weeks was too crazy for me to participate, but it sure was fun to vote! I went for 5 choices this time:
agenda-b- The image is just so eloquent. I love how one can instantly peg the PI, the distraught ghost and the crime evidence in a glance. They were a few technical issues (guy's arms too long, the green 'vapor' is puzzling...) but the storytelling won my vote.
FerrousJack- I like the character, a sort of steampunk Sherlock Holmes to me. Really, I loved the overall style and colours.
Masque- I've noticed your style in the previous CHOW and I'm glad to see it again. I like the strokes you use while colouring, mixing blues and reds. This one really tells its story well and has a great layout.
Antne- What can I say? It's well done, funny and campy :)
Jason Snair- Again, the campiness won me over. The character was well done and the collage of newspaper articles was fun.
I think I went more for the character and entertainment value than just technique this time around.
I definitely loved Bumskee's, Fastart's and Burmak's as well. Gorgeous stuff!

I limited my votes to 3 only. That...was HARD!
blobs - Absolutely brilliant! That painterly style is something I'm trying to accomplish myself.
dwinbotp - Love the whole feel of this pic! Looks like he really loves his job!
MarkusTheBarbarian - I can't deny it...I'm a sucker for period pieces! Atmosphere and lighting, top notch!
Awesome round everyone! On to the next one!
