I always looked at this site but never thought to every post anything up. But here I am ready to make the next step to becoming a better artist! I know I need a lot of improvement but Im willing to put the time and effort to become better. My dream is to become a 3D character animator and with hard work, dedication, and my constant hunger to learn I know that dream will come true one day!!! ☺
It’s going to be a hard climb up the mountain, but Im ready!
Excited to post my artwork and watch my progress. I am opened to critiques and any opinions. Happy to join the Concept Art community ☺
Image: I did this last semester. We worked on it gradually over the semester. Its drawn on mylar paper. On the back drew the bones and on the front drew muscles. Used water color pencils.

Wow these are so freakin big. Anyone know how I can shrink them?
Blythe
February 18th, 2009, 11:56 PM
You will have to resize them on your computer. Do you have any programs for that?

Yea I have Photoshop, I lowered the Resolution so I think it might work this time.

Had a little free time this morning before class. Reference is from Anatomy for the Artist. I really want to be able to get better at drawing portraits. I warmed up my arm like crazy before I started this drawing and kept focusing on staying loose. Big problem I have is not staying loose! :p I like the way it turned out

good start .. important thing is to be consistent and keep updating regularly :)...good studies btw.. if youre into animation you might wanna start drawings some quick gestures for practice.. try going to posemaniacs.com and drawing the quick poses if you dont have access to real life figures.....might help you out.. keep it up !

dchung: Thanks a lot! And I definitly will post regularly! :)
Yup i know about posemaniac, just found out about it a month ago and I love the website. Couldnt go to sleep without drawing from the website. Here a few 30sec gesture drawings. Dont like the way they turned out, need to be more loose. Going to try to make it to the Philly Sketch club tomorrow to get more figure drawing in.

Here are some quick sketches I did while I was in my Observing Humans class. In class we sit in a big circle so its easier for me to draw people :p
The weird guy was a new student in the class and he stood right in front of me... O.O :P

Here are some sketches I did at the figure drawing class today. People at the Plastics Club are really friendly. Sessions are 3hours. Here are 2 40min poses and 1 20min pose. Dont like the way they turned out. But next time I go I will do better!

Today I mostly spent studying for my art history test and working on my film project. I drew very little today but going to practice using a China Brush tonight to get a feel for it. Here is a quick hand study, I know I could do a lot better then this but here it is...

At my school every Monday nights we have a free 2 hour figure drawing session. Here are some of the drawings. Today I experimented with ink. I used a pen and a #2 water color brush. We did quick gestures, portraits, and shadow drawings. I plan on experimenting more with ink in the future, I really enjoyed using it :) Last pic was a memory drawing of anatomy I studied.

Today I took my art history test and did amazing. After the test I just sat around and drew my hand then a few people in the room. Today was kind of a downer because Im not where I want to be with my drawing skills. In my storyboarding class I know Im the worst when it comes to drawing. Pisses me off so much. Sometimes I do get those bad thoughts of doubt, but what I need to do is step my game up. Angry at myself cause I know I could draw better. Will post my storyboarding homework when Im done touching it up. I HAVE TO STOP BULLSHITTING AND STOP DRAWING LIKE A DAM KID. But the thing that keeps me going is my girlfriend. She is my support and I Love her so much for it :)

Dont think I mentioned this but the story boarding class is my favorite class. The teacher is amazing and he has taught me so much. My teacher is the reason why I want to get better at drawing. I want to show him that I am a hard worker and Im serious about Animation being my career. But one thing I need to do is ask him for more advice. Next week Im going to show him my sketchbooks and ask him what I should do. SO MOTIVATED TO DRAW AND GET BETTER!!! :) :D :teeth:

Today was a long day for me. Finally finished my animation homework, then after that I did some drawing :) These are 30sec gesture poses and the other one was an attempted self-portrait. At first I thought the portrait was goin good then I realized I messed up on the proportions. Need to start light and keep checking my proportions along the way! In 2weeks it will be Spring break and this will give me an opportunity to draw a lot and going to more life drawing classes :lifedrawing: ! So Im hoping during that week I will obtain at least a little improvement in my drawing skills.

Here is some of the homework that I have been working on. Assignment for the comic book was to have two characters that are opposite from each other (fat guy, hot waitress) and have them order something from the other character and have a surprise in the food. Basically the fat guy orders a "Creamy Clam Chowder Soup" (yes creamy is a big hint) waitress comes back with the soup and her hair is messed up and her buttons are un-done. Fat guy finds condom wrapper next to his soup, doesnt care cause he is hungry. Stirs his soup, picks up his spoon and finds a condom. Thinks nothing of it and eats the soup :) Another assignment I was working on today was to study composition from an old movie. Comic book isnt done, going to re-do a lot of drawings. So much homework this weekend!!!
Comic book was a weekly homework assignment. This weeks homework is to make drawing corrections and start inking it and finish story boarding old movie (Minimum 30shots)

All of the drawing time I spent today was on the comic Im making for my story boarding class. With the advice from the teacher I was able to improve the look of the Diner and with his help improved the composition on the panel with all the people in it. Amazing teacher, really happy Im taking the class. I know my drawing skills and knowledge are weak right now but because of this class Im motivated to improve day by day!!! :)

Went to the figure drawing session today. They had a clothed model instead of a nude. Finally finished inking my comic! The inking took my a lot longer then I thought it would. Then I did self portrait, really pissed off at how it turned out, thought the proportions where right then near the end I was like SHIT! But over all I had a good day :D

Today got a few things done. Sketched people at the mall for about an hour, not goin to show them cause not worth showing :p Went to a figure drawing session today. Model we had today is real annoying, she always trys to rush us so she can leave earlier, but she is a nice person, she is just real annoying :p Oh and a new thing im going to start doing is as soon as I wake up and right before I go to sleep Im going to draw for about 10min. Draw then sleep is easy but waking up a drawing is something else but I really want to get better, plus drawing is so much fun for me I wont mind ;)

Yesterday I went to an aquarium and it was amazing! I ve never been before. Drew some birds, fish, and hippos. Hippos are now officially on my top 10 list for favorite animal, these things are enormous and at this place they came right up to the glass and put their face on it! And today the only drawing I did was as soon as I woke up. Family came to visit me so spent the day with them :)

HerrleerzeichenS- Hey whats up! Thanks alot, just 20years old. The thing with me is that before college I was never serious about drawing. Now Im dedicated to becoming the best artist and animator I could possible be. Started getting serious about drawing in September 08, started drawing over 20hours a week. And I take photos of my drawings cause they are on a 18x24 Sketch pad and I dont have a scanner that big :p
I am also putting an example of the way I used to draw in Septermber 2008. I have progressed a lot since then and Im going to push myself even more now to get even better!!! Life is good and it couldn't be any better!!!! :D
Drawing of girl was done at the sketch club.
And I still draw everyday, and draw 10-30min when I wake up and before I go to sleep :)
Hard work and dedication equals success. Never give up on your dreams and never stop trying. No matter how many times I mess up Im going to keep pushing forward. We should all do this no matter how crazy our dreams are. I never took an art class in high school and I took a big risk coming to an art school. Freshman year in my drawing classes I was the worst and it was very embarrassing. Not going to let anything stop me from obtaining my dreams!!!!!! :)

WOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTT!!!! Finally Summer time!!!! :D Started drawing last week and got pissed off that everything looked like shit but things are starting too look better now. These are some quick drawings with pencil and pen. Trying to improve my draftsmanship. I have made it a habit to bring a sketch book every where I go, best habit a artist should have! Decided that I am going to go back to Philly 3 weeks before school starts so I can take life drawing classes 3-5times a week.

Wow its been awhile!!! One thing i dont like about this is uploading my drawings cause it takes me forever :p But I do Love seeing my progress!!!! :D Still drawing! Wish I had life drawing classes around me, was thinking about goin to NY every day to take life drawing classes but I would have ended up paying $200+ dollars for transportation! So when I get back to Philly I will get a lot of life drawing done! For now Im drawing from images and copying drawings from Vilppu. Last drawing is one of my Subconscious drawings, dont like showing them too much. And besides drawing I am also animating and studying a lot of animation. Enjoying my summer a lot and I cant wait to go back to Philly to start school and see everyone!!!!!! :D

A lot of people tell me that taking a sculpture class will help your drawings so now Im taking an anatomy class in the sculpting department. Here is a drawing from the animation sketch club, anatomy class, and the sketch club outside of school. Drawing a lot this semester. Really want to be able to understand form this semester so I am able to see things 3 dimensionally. Greatest tool we have is our brain, not our eyes, so visualizing the figure in basic forms is helping me out a lot!!! :)

I LOVE TO DRAW! The more I draw the more I fall in Love with it! This creative puzzle known as drawing is an endless skill that has no limits!!
This semester has been really busy and I am learning a lot. It has also been very very very frustrating. Sometimes I feel like I am going backwards then all of a sudden I jump foward and then sometimes I jump backward. Its crazy!
My goal is to use my imagination more and to think more. Sometimes I feel like I draw just to copy instead of seeing it as a study. I need to think about my line quality more and the drawing process.
These drawings are face studies I have done. My progress with portraits have progressed a good amount. I am going to draw a self portrait now to see where I stand.
Wish I could post more of my drawings but sometimes logging into this site is annoying for me. Every time I up load the images it kicks me out and I wish it wouldnt do that. In the future I will try to most more about my progress!

This Thanksgiving has been a good one!!!! Had a lot of fun and got a lot of work done!! Focused on getting a lot of my sculpture project finished. This picture only shows the abs, and the upper muscles. During the week I fished the lower leg, obliques, and back muscles. Going to build up the mass some more on Monday! Other two drawings are from the sketch club. First one I used a brush pen, pen, and colored pencil.

Wow, you've improved quite a bit from your first couple of posts. You are really trying hard, and you've improved dramatically--especially in your depictions of the figure, and it shows in the increased looseness of your cartoons. Keep it up!
I don't have much to offer in terms of brushwork or watercolor, but I do have a suggestion for your sculpture:
It may be the camera angle, but it doesn't appear that the temporalis muscle is actually running through the zygomatic arch and attaching to the mandible; it appears that the zygomatic bone attaches too much to the skull and closes off that hole.

Quick Questions:
-What materials are you using to make the sculptures?
-and how are you making them? (the process?)
ThomasM
October 30th, 2010, 07:09 PM
you have some great studies in here man, and that sculpture youre doing (sorry i mean those sculptures) is looking really great. Your pencil work is gettting better, and life drawings will help that a lot.
One tip for you: try to really think about line weight and width. When you look at two objects and one overlaps the other, should the line be darker there.. or perhaps something is closer to the viewer - again usually the line weight is a little heavier. Always try and think about varying how dark the lines are, because this will give you even more depth in your studies.
DeterminedAnimator
November 7th, 2010, 10:55 PM
snippet The entire sculpture is made out of wax. A lot of aluminum foil is used in the center. I use metal calibers to measure my measurements. First I made the skull before I put any muscles on.
ThomasM Thanks a lot man! I really need to work on my line work a lot!
Here are some quick gesture drawings, and sketches from the mall. Took pictures of what the final sculptures look like! :)

5,000 Gesture Drawing Challenge Start Date: Nov. 15th 2010
The best way for me to put more effort into something is to be challenged. I feel like my pace and motivation has been slowing down. So I am going to give my self a challenge. I challenge myself to do 5,000 gesture drawings!
My goal by the end of this challenge is to be better at capturing the essence of life. I want to be able to put emotion into my drawings with only a few lines. Look at drawings by Milt Kahl, Glene Kean, or any great animator. I hope after doing this for a life time that I will come close to the amount of skill these artist have.
I will be looking at books from Villpuu, Michael Hampton, Walt Stanchfield, and Michael D. Mattesi.
I will draw from reference photos, great masters, animations, life ect… My main goal is to capture the life and essence of a pose.
And if you want to see how I started off with gesture drawings go to the first page, but I warn you, the bad drawings may hurt your eyes!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These poses are from a life drawing class. The poses range from 30sec-5min. And the pages with a lot of gesture drawings on it are from a moving pose. She moves very slowly for 15min. Each page will only count as 10 gesture drawings.
I feel good about this challenge. I have so much energy right now!!!!!

I will post updates soon to all the gesture drawings I have been doing but first I wanted to let everyone know that the Streaming Class - Anatomy for Artists is so freakin AMAZING!!!! Its on-sale right now for $10 dollars and its worth every penny! I have taken anatomy classes before and this streaming class has put a lot of what I have learned into a new perspective!!!!!
They have a gesture drawing streaming class too but I am not sure if I should get it. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them!

PurpleGoat and jNeumann Thanks guys for the kind comments! Going to keep pushing and doing my best ;)
I have a quick question for everybody, how do I put a link to my sketch book under my comments? I have no freakin clue!!!! :blah:
Busy with my final animation project for school, so this 1 month break isnt really a break :p
Some of these gestures are 1min and some are more. I drew these images from a motion library that consisted of martial arts, ballet, and flipping. I really tried to feel the movement, some are successful and some need lots of work!

I like how you keep drawing and find different things to draw. I really like your first image of the muscle anatomy drawing you did. Your gestures are coming along and sometimes I struggle myself to be expressive in them.
There are some images with some proportion problems but I think you'll iron that out later as you improve. I still run into proportion problems sometimes...

yeah, great improvment ! you're going on the right path ! don't forget, that, as an animator, you have to find your drawing style for animation, so don't forget to draw from mind characters, trying to simplify from intuition, get inspiration from great animators, why not trying to animate ? get the richard williams " the animator's survival kit " and the practice from it ! i'm looking forward to see how far you'll go !

jojokenni Thanks! Yea I really need to work on proportions again! Need to keep slamming it into my head until it becomes part of my subconscious!
SuperSwank1 Thank man! As for the brush and pen sketches, you really dont need a class to learn how to do what you want to do. I have slowly come to realize that I probably didnt need to go to art school to learn what I wanted to learn. I have learned some things in school but I have learned way more just trying to figure everything out on my own, and a lot through FREE online tutorials, and ebooks!
Adevila Thanks a lot!
kikindaface Yup thats true, but I am a 3D Character animator, so finding a hand drawn animation style isn't at the top of my list :p But I still do hand drawn animation. I believe that you should first learn hand drawn animation before going into 3D. And I have been animating 10sec every week since the begging of November :D I will fully complete my animation in May. And I draw 12-15 drawings for every second :p But I will soon do an animation that just focuses on drawing nothing but gesture drawings once I hit my 1,000 mark!!!:yum:
Here is the website I use to draw gestures. It is also a good website to study motion and weight. http://www.scott-eaton.com/category/bodies-in-motion

This time I drew gestures from Lion King. Youtube is an amazing resource for gesture drawing! Animals are hard to draw!
Here is a link to my animation work. I still need to improve soooOOOoooOOoooOOOOoo much more! But here it is. I plan on going to Animation Mentor starting in June! Hopefully things work out!

Focused on drawing Jiminy Cricket this time. The Old masters of animation are amazing at bringing life to characters! I plan on continuing to study these old films frame by frame. I am also studying the characters state of mind while I draw.
Other gestures are 30sec-2min

Yay!!!! Im back in Philly! Had a life drawing session today and yesterday, and it felt soooOOooooOooo good to draw from the figure! I am going to miss having life drawing sessions only a block away from me for just $6 :(
I start the armature for my new ecorche sculpture on Monday! :D I will post the drawings once I make a few corrections.
Poses range from 30sec-10min!

I think most artists can feel like that, but looking through your sketchbook, I would say you are definitely getting better!

What you describe sounds like a you've reached a plateau. Keep going and you'll hit some nice improvement and level up sooner or later. Enjoy the pateau and look forward to the leap forward that will inevitably come.
Post #77 sticks out. Your Jiminy Cricket renderings show a lot of action and movement. Very nice study.

Ambitous goal! Try to join the spartan camps (here in the forum, you find them at
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=74 ) because you could your goal divide into milestones of 50 gestures a camp or more and profit of the comments there. Keep on pushing! I'm looking forward to see your progress. :)

Ludic Thanks! So far Im learning a lot! :D
ranunkel Thank you :)
purplegoat Thats true! Best moments are the ones you get stuck in a rut. The most growth occurs when you are challenged, and boy do I feel challenged! Just need to keep pushing and observing! :)
surus Awesome forum! I actually started doing the real spartan workout, the one the actors did for the movie. Its so incense!
Here are some more quick drawings! The longest drawings are around 20min. Not all 177 drawings I did the past week are shown.

You're doing a great job with those drawings. A couple of crits: Pay more attention to the proportions of the torso. In alot of your drawings the torso is to short. Be aware that the upper half (ribcage) is about equal in lenght as the lower half (mid section and pelvis). Push your 3dimensional thinking more. You seem to think flat in some areas. Be sure to think about every part you draw a solid form (or section of a form) in space. This is quite hard so don't give up on it. Hope this helps and keep up with those great studies.

fantasyartist Hey thanks for the advice! I really need to get the proportions of the human figure into my subconscious. And your right about some parts being flat. Need to keep thinking three dimensionally =)
Vertical Thank you very much! Going to keep pushing until I get to where I want to be. THen im goin to push some more! ;)
Its been a crazy semester! Cant wait to finish and just focus on AnimationMentor!

Thhanks for the comment! Wow, so many images...I noticed a couple things that are hurting your drawings, first your hatching doesn't help describe form. You should wrap your shadows around the form, like this (http://animatedbuzz.com/albums/photo/view/album_id/25/photo_id/1329). Second, you need to learn the proportions of the face. You're putting your mouths right in the middle of the space between the chin and base of the nose, they're actually in the upper 1/3. And to answer your question, I want to go into animation like you!
