For face proportions, construction and getting a better grip on the 3dimensional shape of the head you could take a look at Loomi's "drawing the head and the hands" which is freely available online

hey man if you want to get better at anatomy i'd recomend trying to find a life study class and also i'd recomend experimenting with the way you draw etc :)
Oh and one of my favourite activities to get you drawing if you have a block and also to help you improve line work and anatomy is Posemaniacs.com
Keep Drawing !

Hey man. You're best shot of improving quickly is to upload your work regularly and use the feedback and critique you get from other artists to improve...that is the point of the Sketchbook section. Hope you post soon.

Thanks for your nice words Lyno .... i wish I could draw faces better .. but there is only one way... practise !! :P
I am really disappointed that my scanns lost so many details which are normaly to see in my Sketchbook :S
But taking photos failed cause the flash of the camera is reflected by the paper .. and shots without flash are to dark :(

Good to see you are committed to improving your skills, looks like you are going about it the right way! I saw that someone recommended a Loomis book, that is good advice. Loomis and George Bridgman both have written several books on figure drawing that help simplify the human body into simple shapes and forms. You have a good grasp of form in some of your studies from life (spoon, lighter, eraser, etc.) that can be used to draw people accurately as well. Keep at it, good work!

Self portraits are hard. You have to get used to your face being the same as everyone else's. x ) At least, I did.
Really like the spider one. The terror looks almost real in the eyes.

You have a good grasp on the muscles. But the proportions are usually off.
Just more practice, you'll definitely get there ;)

Ahh fresh meat! :P
Thanks for the post man! :)
Im glad to se your doing some studies. Its always good to doodle ofcourse but really kick yourself in gear and do teady stuff like draw chapes. Without drawing lineart, just look at stuff and draw the shadows. It gonna make you grow fast. Theres always good to draw poses and box characters in different angles and poses. Fast ones just to get the hang of basics.
Power on soldier!

Looks like you are starting out nicely with your material. One main hint draw figures from life as much as you can. Draw your family members, friends, people around town like at the park. Also draw just shapes and fast gesture type figures that can help loosen you up. Anyways just keep drawing and keep a daily sketchbook. I really didn't start that till my 20's myself. Well carry on!

July 16th, 2009, 09:58 PM
yea all i have to say is listen to the advice everyone here has given you so far and youll definitely grow as an artist i wish i had people giving me this type of advice when i was your age.

July 17th, 2009, 02:25 AM
Hay skippy!
Box characters are characters out of boxes but more like figuredrawing with the use of boxes to nail proportions. hope that explains it for ya! :)
And damn right you should draw from life. And without lineart! Ill pop back in when I see some!
jetzt Arbeit. schnell! :D
(I dont know german)

I'd say to start doing quick sketches of muscles/skeletons, keep up with the basic shapes from real life... but this is what I have to do myself, haha.
B-Man
July 17th, 2009, 03:05 AM
Personally I newer got the whole ide with drawing skeletons. you should get like knowledge about how the body moves and bends but its a bit far from how it looks. I think just drawing figures in different poses and in movement. pause a DVD and just do a doodle and try capture the feel of movement. but skeleton drawing dont give more than knowing haw to draw bad as skelletons. You dont need to know every bone in the body. Thats for geeks with to much time. Time you can put on lerning the colorwheel and brush up your observationskillz. sry for spaming your SB but i didnt fully agree with Elle IS

BlackDelphin:THANKS! haha, your german isnt that bad. Ja, I will try my best to uoload regulary ... but today is the last day with scanner :S and next week i go to spain 2 weeks >.< .... where the swineflu is btw ... xD
Hipalien: Nice to meet you, too :D Thanks for your advices
Like i said.. ill go to spain with my friends and there ill try to draw on the beach while chillin :D
madsamuri2240: Yea i do that :D I am pretty happy I found this nice Commonity and its nice member ;)
B-Man: Hey dude ! Thanks for your suggestion ;) I'll try my best to life draw as much as I can :D "Danke" ^_^
Elle IS: Thanks mate :D I do muscle sketches .. but i dont upload them here ^_^ like B-Man said.. drawing skeletons isnt usable

July 17th, 2009, 03:38 AM
Wow, you're only 15! I'm jealous, haha. I wish I would have started drawing more when I was that young...About studying the figure, I'd say where you're at I would start working on correct proportions and the basic geometric shapes that make up the different areas of the body. When doing the anatomy stuff, it's important to study the bones too and not just the muscles. Knowing how the muscles attach to the bones will help you out in the long run and there's lots of books out there that illustrate bone-muscle relationship in an easy to understand way. Also having the knowledge of how a skeleton functions will help you understand how the figure moves and what it can and cannot do. Anyways, good luck with your studies and keep it up dude!
Strassenpenner08
July 17th, 2009, 03:43 AM
Hmm thanks Jamesy ^^ ... I dont really study the bones but ... the skelton like the stickmans of Andrew Loomis ... i dont really draw every bone ^^ But thanks for your detailed suggestion .. :D in the next days / weeks i am in holidays ill do much life draws .. and try to draw as much gestures as i can :D

July 17th, 2009, 05:27 AM
Thanks for dropping by SB man. It's good to see you doing some studies, I wish I started studying anatomy at 15.
Your self-portraits are already getting better. Do you use guidelines when drawing?
Keep doing those posemaniacs, I tried them on 30 seconds before, I had to change it to 90 sec before I could get comfortable with 30, cause like you said it goes by really fast! But with practice they become easier to draw. Some have already suggested Andrew Loomis, if you decide to study his drawings remember to read his comments too, it makes it much easier to understand. Keep it up!

You have a minimum grasp at drawing so you should manage fine with some studies.
I would recomend that you learn color theory at the same time you also learn to draw so both can be balanced and not like me(i sketched like mad and never colored, now i have dificulties >_>).
But since you wanted some help I'll give ya some usefull threads and references.

These are the things i would advise you to do if you want to get better and more wise in terms of proportions, flow, imagination, shadows, etc.
I wish you good luck :)
Ana.

Hey man. You are young and are in the right path to become a very good artist. I wish I could be at your age. You have knowledge of what to study to get better and have joy to draw. This is a huge step. Don´t lose it.
I´m learning from Glen Vilppu. He is a master in breaking down the parts of the human body in geometric shapes. Here is the link: http://www.vilppustore.com/Figrdvd.htm. Consider buying some of these.

"Or you want a watch? Beauuutiful swiss watches!" :hatsoff:

Hi! Thanks for visiting my sketchbook. I see you are still at the beginning so the best advice for you is to keep practicing and doing studies from life and reference. Get some good drawing books from Loomis for example. You'll become better very fast when you keep it going.

My recommendation would be to wait with the colors and start with black/white values studies.
You could go to this site: mmaphotography.com, download a pic and desaturate it so it is only in grayscale. Then try to copy it. I find it a great way to practice values and how they show form. I have some exampels in my sketchbook if you need inspiration.
cheers!

Thanks for dropping by! You've probably started your trip already, I hope you've had a good one by the time you see this.
The biggest problem I can see, after a quick survey of your work is that the lower body is usually too short. But I'm certain someone has already informed you of this. Otherwise, great work and keep it up!

Hey there young Padawan!
It's been a while since I last dropped by, so here i am. Good to see that you have some cool ideas. I cant say anything that others did right now, your young you have the will and most likely whole lot of time in your life to improve :>
I'd like to see some real anatomy studies fromnyou, not the funny toons but real good old anatomy studies, which will pay off later.

Im really ashamed of not dropping by a long time :(
ok how to start .....
elddonnemar thanks for your nice words .. ill practise the lower body :D
BlackDelphin Yeah ill try to post more studies and sketches, but first i have to get a scanner °_° so like you said to me .. ill try to improve my digital skills and start to draw balls xD
Flaskpost thanks for dropping by ... which link ?
Jeff Lai ill give my best at the black and white studies ^^
Icecold thanks man :D .. i think ill start practising "real" humans and poses like u said :D

So.... thanks to all the people who gave me tons of advices :D
Ill try to make use of all of them, but that are so many .. ill do that piece by piece ^^
At the moment im not able to upload my pencil works i did the last months (which arent that much btw :( )
But i have my graphic tablet :D but my photoshop i got from a friend is lost after my hard disk is broken .... so i only have OpenCanvas 1.1 which is also great with the right settings ^^
So my first question is: How to start practising digital painting ??
Second question: Is anyone interested in a OC session with me? For showing me his/her skills

So my first question is: How to start practising digital painting ??
Yeah the programs aren't really important, you're effectively just learning how to paint. Basically, it's just like anything else: you learn from studies. Apples are a good place to start because they reflect colours around them in a similar way to skin. Great place to start: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=107217&highlight=bumskee . Be sure to switch to greyscale every now and then to check your values are working though. Good luck.

I'd say get yourself some anatomy books and start studying from that.
I am currently using Sarah simblet anatomy for artists

Hi mate. For your age you seem to have done some good training. Now you have to keep studying more so that you will be amazingly good in some years, and you will be young also.
Your characters will not become good if you dont study anatomy. So make some focus on anatomy even if its boring, and keep in mind that after you become good with it your will be able to create good characters in good speed.
Keep going & and thnx for visiting my sketchbook

Happy birthday a bit to late! :D
Im glad to see some bridgeman. Its important that you learn form. Your drawings sometime tend to get flat. Start with easy shapes and try and draw them so that they look good. Its a actually hard to make a cube look really fricking great. with lightsourses and everything. Start with easy shapes and draw them with the same light. Move to stranger chapes and try and make em look 3D. Keep on drawing your characters and everything that makes you love drawing but try and do mere studies aswell. Your young and I know how bored you get with studies. I remember how it was for me. Keep up the bridgman and stuff. You need to studie figure and proportions. Do box figures. Great way to learn proportions and fun as hell! :)
take care buddy!
I hope you dont mind. This is a small image of a box figure. Its easy to define form. you see where evrything is facing.

The best thing is if you will continue to draw more and more from life!
As you do this, looking at things will become easier for you.
There are endless things to learn, start from the basics.
Sometimes you'r line gets messy, use one confident line.
I think you will do!:) Keep up with your enthusiasm!

You are still very young, but you got potential, now it wont happen fast i can promise you that, but you will be good one day, if that happens in 4,5, or six years it all depends on the heart you put into it, and i agree what Jatherip said, more time spend at drawing will pay off. Now guess what you have to do now? Draaaaaw :D
Now i wanted to say that in german but i'm affraid that there would be too much grammar mistakes ^^

Hey, thought i'd visit your sketchbook again, and i have to say those hands are really good! and your anatomy has improved. Posemaniacs is great isnit :D Only advice i could give is to try and work bigger, as in on large paper. Drawing larger actually helped me to get proportions really good, if you can see what i mean. :)

good stuff man, keep working hard at it! just a word of advice, maybe try paint the surrounding environment (the table etc) when doing still life studies, and pay attention to the edge work (squint your eyes and soften and harden edges to create contrast)

So Hi there ^^
A post after a long time ..... first in this year :D
thanks: paperX , teapo , JoeS and TopSecret
I think in the last time i did not have enough time to draw something to post here .... but its not so that i didnt draw anything ... i am drawing the whole time at school actually, but at home im too lazy to start something....
In the last week i had a project for my school.... my teacher told me its free for me what i will do .... so i did tape art .... i dont know if some of you know that but its art made with masking tape
here are the steps and the result (the guy on the last picture is a classmate to show how "big" it is)
the picture tooks me 8 weeks and 16 workinghours

Tape art, thats new to me.
Sweet idea and execution. One big tip though if you really want to go beyond the hobby with your stuff... force yourself to draw sometimes, especially at home where you are free to do what you want. After five minutes you will be so into it, you are going to spend hours drawing.
Keep going and sharing.
Cheers

shiiiiaaaat man ! :o don't compare yourself to the hyper-awesome-unnormal-alien-bear-like people at your age %) get your posivtive attitude back hombeboy ! haha :D
you'r just sixteen and got more then enough time to develop yourself and your art :)
here's a QUOTE OF ALGENPFLEGER to give you a motivation booooooooooost ! FINISH YOUR QUEST ! you'll make it for your man ! YAY ! now get your fun back and grap your pencil !!! :):):)
One thing that annoys me to no end is how much people seem to concentrate on the wrong things. The reason why I won't show my schedule is that it's nothing more than a piece of paper with stuff written on it. It only takes on meaning in connection with the guy who created it, which would be me. How would my schedule be of use to anyone else? It's really, REALLY important that you stop thinking in this "If I only had" and "What's his secret" mindset. It makes you dependent and weak and will prevent you from growing. THERE ARE NO SECRETS. I don't say this because I don't want to share my stuff, I say it because it's really, really important to grow a spine and learn to ANALYZE YOUR OWN WORK, look for weaknesses, and find ways to tackle them. Don't take anything for granted! If someone else gives you advice, it's a bonus, but you can NEVER depend on it.That's the most important thing my drum teacher taught me, back when I was a young, arrogant kid and sucked at drumming. He crushed my ego completely by showing me all the things I couldn't do, and, more importantly, how to FIND them. You NEED to learn this if you want to improve - look at your own stuff! To me, working completely from imagination is the best way to do this. I draw a figure, and if I had problems with the shoulders, well, then I'd better go back to studying those! And if I will ever be able to draw a flawless figure, then I know sure as hell that I will rot if I stay in my comfort zone any longer. Get the fuck out of there! Do stuff that you can't do! I feel this is essential - do never look at the things you have already achieved! It will make you fat and lazy. Strive for more, reach for the impossible. This is the only way to prevent stagnation. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Look at Jason Manley's story, check out MindCandyMan's thread - people can do anything! You just have to WANT it and WORK TOWARDS IT.
Back to the schedule, a piece of paper does NOT help you to get up early, it does not help you to stop slacking. What it does is REMIND you. The greatest danger for drive is, in fact, life. There's always so much stuff happening around you that it's terribly easy to lose sight of your goals. So write them down! This is where motivation and drive come from, at least for me - constantly asking yourself "Am I there yet? No? Well, then I'd better bust out a few more drawings, so I can look myself in the face!" You NEED to have this stuff right in your face, or it will get lost. But as soon as you are able to always think of where you want to be, you'll have the best reason to get up early, to not watch TV, to still draw when everyone else is already asleep.
I touched this above, but let me say it again for emphasis, what I feel is extremely important is becoming INDEPENDENT. This does not mean never talking to anyone else, or that you shouldn't ask for advice if you can't figure out something on your own, or if you're stuck somewhere, I do it too. But it means trying to come up with solutions to your own problems.
This applies to what I said above - if you notice you can't draw hands, then draw hands! But it also applies to questions like "Where do you get your reference?" Well, where would I get reference? Doesn't it, first of all, depend on what you want to do? If you need to study hands, then why not study your own? Get yourself a mirror and start drawing! If you're looking for specific poses, then why not think about it for a second? Are there sports that have these movements? Yes? Well, then go to google and type something like "handball galleries", or go to flickr and search for "flying kick", and you'll find more stuff than you'll ever be able to study in your whole life! It just depends on what YOU need. There's no such thing as the ultimate source, or the ultimate brush, or the ultimate sketchbook paper (Jesus, why does everyone ask DanielC what paper he uses? =D I remember asking him too a while back, he missed my face just by a few inches!) This is really really important - ANALYZE the problem, and then come up with a specific solution.
And this is exactly how your schedule should work. And if that is still not enough, then aim higher! Set more goals, like, update daily, do a character every day, reach this artist's level by that date, and so on. This requires a bit of thinking of where you REALLY want to be. Keep your eyes on the horizon!!
And a last thing that you can't stress enough - listen to Bobby Chiu's podcasts. It's the best. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJowNFmuul8
