View Full Version : Think Giger's style is cool?

I do! And I'm looking for a 2d artist who feels the same way.

I've been working on a playable level for UT3 for a fair while in my spare time, alongside my commercial and hobby Unreal work. It's cross-themed, featuring an industrial mining facility built over the top of, and around some kind of abandoned temple.

The temple parts, I'd like to texture using an art style similar to that of HR Giger; the somewhat biological yet mechanical. The catch is, that whilst I can indeed create shaders and materials, and program, and design levels, I'm not an artist!

So I'm looking for someone who can follow a fairly simple brief, and work with me to get this realised. There are several pieces to do, and will be based around existing geometry, and I've reused the same geometry as much as possible, to minimise the amount of work required.

Compensation? Nothing financial, but I'll teach the artist how to produce their own materials, starting with the Giger work, and demonstrating various different techniques. If the map is completed in time, I'm happy to enter it in the MSUC competition, and split any won prize down the middle with the artist - after all, it's only fair!

I have a few shots of the (largely placeholder'd) level WIP to show. It's exceptionally detailed, and highly animated, so it wants some player love!

In my opinion, this is EXACTLY what a non paying job offer should be. It's clear about what it's looking for, and even though there is no money to be expected, the poster is willing to trade something else of value (the offer to teach the artist how to produce their own materials). It also shows the poster is serious about his/her project by showing current progress.

If every post in the non paying forums were this good, it would be a great place for artists to gain some experience.

Thanks Joe,

I'm just hoping someone will pick up on it. I'm kind of looking for someone particular, but I'm hoping there's someone out there with the interest. It's a part time project for me, to buff out my level design portfolio (I'm a programmer by qualifications) - and it can work without the extra art, but I don't think that'd be doing it justice.

So something I didn't really mention in my previous post - there's no real timeframe to this, and I don't want to scare anyone off who might think they don't have the skill-set.

BlackGuard decided this project wasn't for him, so I'm afraid, I'm still on the lookout. You can see some recorded footage of my previous work, and shots of this level in progress here;

I'll update this thread with some shots of the temple exterior later in the week.

do you have the licensed Unreal Engine 3 !!!

No, I don't personally have a UE3 engine license (nor could I ever afford to buy, let alone use one). Everything shown here is in the Unreal Tournament 3 editor.

I do however have a lot of Unreal experience; I work as a games programmer and designer in my day-job, and specialise in Unreal technology. So I've been more than exposed to the licensed side of things.

sounds interesting. I love the Giger style. Been a long time since I've played Unreal and I have never designed anything for a game. Can you PM me with some more information about the geometry and format of the files you are looking for etc.?

Looks like an interesting project given the above imagery, but they don't translate into your level design using the Unreal engine. It tends to look like the game of the same name. The final gameplay experience being different would depend entirely on the design and intellingence of the inhabitants. I feel like something based on Giger would be a more character driven experience, like Final Fantasy.

There is also a new Photon engine which is C based and has a 30 day free trial.

Yeah I'd like to create a mod or two, but in the end I think they would end up looking like zombies drifting around in there...

To be honest, I'm not sure I followed much of that, haha.

Anyway, large parts of the level are supposed to look like Unreal - that's the aim. To clarify, this is not a mod / game project, just a single level for the original Unreal Tournament 3 game.

Anyway, here are some tasty shots of the temple area coming together, now with added sexy lighting and shiny moving parts!

(Have I tempted anyone to take on this daunting task yet?)
