Whitevillage: Thank you. In some slavic countries the traditional christmas food is carp. They are used to buy live and then put in bath for a day before christmas eve. I think that's pretty much torturing the animals with the transport in sacks through town and low quality caption and so.. Well I don't do it, nor my family. I just put in in the cd cover as an other look on Christmas, little of sad and creepy (at least to me the whole carp thing is very creepy). Also I think it fits the radio, as it's the only non-mainstream radio you can hear in Slovakia.
Well just wanted to say the carps in bath are not totally random surreal.

Need to add a death animation of the girl and repair the walk and probably delete the attack cause she will not attack (and take away the white border, sure). I don't see much similarity to the russian guy you linked.. guys sometimes it looks that some of you see art only here and on cgtalk and during playing warcraft etc, maybe you should look at more styles in illustrations and in art generally, so you won't connect me to pretty much the only random illustrator you know who's doing something different, for example works with naivity in any way.

Mydrim, you right, i don't know too many primitive artists, haven't been interested in them, since I can't learn from them, but when I see one I like it. The only thing with it is that you wouldn't have as much freedom as much you would have if you had academic knowledge, like John Mahoney for example.

So glad I stumbled on your sketchbook, it's just full of absolute gems! SO inspiring. I really enjoy the linoprint-y texture on your recent pics, and the bold simple palettes really suit it <3

EllionV - I don't want to derail Mydrim's sb, and have no idea on his thoughts, but really wanted to mention that knowledge of/interest in theory/history/anatomy, etc, and choosing to work in a stylized way are not mutually exclusive things. Hope I'm not being rude, just that I've not seen Mydrim mention anywhere that he's not interested in study (hey, maybe he's not, but one can't assume that simply because his work is stylized!), and I see a lot of solid underlying skills here. (*edit* your own work in your sb is loose and stylized, so I'm sorry if I misunderstood what you meant?)

geckochan, well I don't really know if Mydrim is interested in learning academics, but imo it doesn't really matter, his style holds on it's own. academic skills might help or might just kill w/e he had. I had a friend who used to draw in very primitive style and now he is studying academics. And I don't think he needs any academics really, it's all holds on it's own, I guess I just get a little jealous when people can avoid everything that I'm trying to learn and still make solid art. =)

EllionV: Thanks but that doesn't make much sense to me, nobody would ever wanted to go study if it makes you having less freedom in creating art. It's actually the opposite, the more knowledge you have, the more freedom, cause you have more skills, more tools to play with.
Oh and I am not very sure what you mean by "primitive artists", but yes you can learn alot from primitive artists! From art of primitive cultures around the world, from early medieval's art, from ancient Egypt, or even from the cavemen's art.

i think being able to think about and to express form is mostly whats holding back your concept/reference work. its pretty much the opposite idea of the more illustrative work youre doing which is stylized and more concerned with the iconish representation of things rather then a realistic portrayal, but maybe some training stuff like drawing busts or still lifes would be beneficial anyway because it would expand your visual vocabulary a bit as far as poses and perspectives go. that said, your work is very interesting and the more complete scenes and comics (particularly the rib one) are really well done/inspiring

I wonder if it would be interesting to do something with the more abstract pages. Those are pretty intriguing. In fact that abstract quality in your work is what i dig the most about this sketchbook. So i dunno, maybe there's some new levels to take your stuff ...?

walnut Thanks. You mean start doing abstract art? Not really interested in that as I love storytelling (with characters). But I believe everything is abstract first, and if you can't handle the abstract shapes, you won't really be able to work with the shapes that are additionally also trees, people, houses.

I think you've got a neet style here. I like the unpolished but refinded elements of your figures, the proportions are great, the gestures are expressive and you clearly enjoy telling the narration of each piece.

I also like the studies above, the different mark making techniques, would be good to through some of them into your more 'developed' works for contrast in mood and astetic.

Still as evilly beautiful work as ever. I have one gripe, well i wouldn't call it a gripe: in this last pic bikini-girl's pose is strangely passive for a scene as bloody as this. But the whole thing works in a weird way, so i'd feel like an ass telling you to put more dynamics in there.
Cool composition on the 'solaris' pic btw.

Not gonna write about specific designs, just one thing:
Your work is exciting in here, and that's cause you rarely see that kind of freedom and personality, even if i like it or not.
Personally i find your sketches interesting, with the people sketches and the black + white ones liking most.
I think you have to be more careful with contrast on the pencil sketches.
Maybe you can make them more dynamic putting a bit more black.
But that doesn't matter very much, cause it's something yours, it's not about crits and wright or wrong techniques.
I like very much the girl on the #108 post. Drawing the skin black really caught up with me (i finally wrote about a specific thing :P)!
Really excited about doing my own thing too and not worry so much about studies man!

knut-: Thanks. I already switched to softer pencil and will try to be more careful with scanning. Also I plan to make some bigger pencil drawings, like portraits maybe, or something and I am so keeping in mind to putting more black so people could see something even from a little distance

This is my first and hopefully last linocut. It's 8x aprox 80x45cm panels. Hard work cutting it. Got left hand bleeding from occasional slashes and blisters on right hand from pressuring the chisel. I love you, digital painting.
