i love these...your line quality and varying of line weights is spot on...clothing designs are clearly carefully considered...great...reminds me of how my stuff will look in a few years of hard work...my only criticism is it seems you need to practice feet. your designs for shoes and feet are brilliant, but placing them in perspective and in believable stances seems to need a bit more practice. lets see some more.

Hey
thanks fer the feedback everyone!
ClocktowerArtworks: Yeah perspective is something i've been trying to fully tackle for a long time. But yeah it can get wonky on me. As you said, practice is wut will remedy it.
Phuzion: Heh yeah i totally kno wut you mean about the muscles.. I did go overboard on em.. Looking back I think my initial goal was to bring out the muscles that usually aren't contracted or normaly aren't that defined. But yeh one too many shouldn't be there.
Bomba: I will colour them up one day soon.. cept i've yet to tinker with colourin anythin digitally. Soon enough..
K-10: Not particularly, although now i see what you mean as i've just recently taken a closer look at t.nomura's (of FFX fame) work. The last 3 were drawn before i checked out his stuff a couple of months ago. But his stuff is definately of some inspiration at this point.
To everyone else: Glad you liked n thanks again
Cheers.

October 14th, 2003, 01:12 AM
thanks fer all the kind comments everyone.. much appreciated.
Sypha: Hmm well still concepts.. Those last 3 could have changes but heh I rarely leavin anythin really really sketchy so i dunno wut you could call this.
sin: influences... ahh too many to name.. off the top of my head.. hyung-tae kim, falcoon, t.nomura, joe mad, lesean, francisco ruiz velasco, ramos, ale garza.. n loads more..
metaphysiks:fresh outta highschool lil more than 3 months ago.. 18. glad thats over.
Romulus: On these, i used those cheap red col-erase pencils by sanford. fer paper size i normally use from 11x14 to 14x17 paper cuz its gives me more freedom on the page n lets me fit in details.
Well hope you guys stay tuned.. hope to have more soon n thanks again.

Wow! Thanks a lot for posting! I found your work to be very inspiring. It's such a cool, fluid style that I wish I could grasp! LoL I really enjoyed the clothing too. How does one keep their head straight when designing outfits and such?! I'm just lucky enough to get the anatomy right! LoL I'm curious how you've practiced to gain such an edge on this style. Any excercises you used to do? Very cool stuff. I admire you very much! And only 18! That's crazy!

thanks a lot everyone! Your comments mean a lot.
Romulus, Zebzfree, Anto: to answer your question about anatomy... no books ( though i should pick up sum) so far.. i guess it slowly crept up on me the more n more i drew.. i've only just recently taken my first figure drawin class.. about three classes in so far. As to my understanding of it before that.. jus through observation and looking at how other people did it themselves. I guess you've just gotta apply drawing the body in as many forms possible... n if i ever came across a muscle that i hadn't seen before or wasn't clearly defined then i just try and take note of it. Heh just draw draw draw.. sooner or later things either just look right or not n u'll be able to tell if what muscles you've drawin look somewhere near natural. ahah i prolly coulda condensed that much better..
n everyone else.. glad you dig the work.. no doubt i'll be posting whenever i can. thanks.

man, first of all, i love your stuff, cant find anything to fault, NICE WORK! inspiration is flowing throught me, also TY TY TY for giving me the name Falcoon! He is a GOD! When searched his art, i about fell over, his style is incredible, ty so much for the refference!!! And keep up the good work, you definatly are on the right track! By the way to you know any of the artist names that worked on the Rival School's games? Thanx again, look forward to ur future posts!:pumpkin:

October 21st, 2003, 02:11 PM
daG-ELLO, PencilPunk: thanks!
metalwinds: thanks.. yeh i'd like to do that soon.. i draw in really sporadic sessions though.. its hard for me to say how long cuz i've never really kept track of time.. depending upon whether the character is totally clear in my mind and how much forethought i've made, how many details add to the drawing..for some of these characters, I just went straight to the page without sketching them out first... i'd say anywhere from 30 mins to 2 hours for clean line work, give or take. usually do my cleanup as i go.. what usually stalls me is not knowing what i wanna do with a particular piece whether it be the pose, clothing detail, etc.. so if that happens i'll leave that particular piece n start somthing else n then come back to it later once the image is clearer in my head. so yeah, it really varies. I'll work on maybe 2 or 3 characters at a time if one of em stumps me for the moment.
Capurnicus: yeh will do when i can n thanks.
digitalgannon: heh glad to be of help. falcoon is a machine.. draws everyday to a wikked standard.. too bad he took a whole bunch of his stuff off his site a lil while ago. About the capcom artists who worked on rival schools... actually I have the design works book, but it all in japanese.. so ahah figurin out who did what is a tad confusin.. theres no doubt that they play off one anothers styles, as their work has so many similarities to each other. I think the capcom design works book is totally worth it though.. a newer book is also comin out soon but i forgot what its called.
much appreciation for the comments again

complete2: thats great to know.. yeah theres always some stuff that i haven't finished either. thanks
INFERNOmunky: heh i never said i didn't sketch.. just that some of the ones i posted weren't... they just flowed out.. alotta the time i do sketch but doing it very lightly to try out different poses, forms and such.. really all just depends on whether i have difficulty putting one of my ideas on paper or not. if anything i should sketch way more instead of being set on a certain idea or look, then i'd really know how to present a character in a way that'd make the most impact.

i'd really like to see you paint them because your line art is so clean...

Main Loop
October 22nd, 2003, 05:03 PM
very nice, clean work.... good line quality... i dont really go for the peanut-head-on-Hulk's-body look that most of em got going on... You do any drawing from life? i suggest it, if you dont... I also suggest you try painting some of them in gouache.. photocopying them then painting the copy might be a safer bet..
digitalgannon
October 22nd, 2003, 05:09 PM
ahhhhhhhh, u could go the actual painting way as stated by loop- tho if u got a copy of photoshop lying around or painter for that matter- do it there- much more easier to make changes and play w/ then gua. If u do paint them, are u gonna do it like Falcoons work? Anyways thats my 2 cents

great stuff, thanks for sharing!!
Kwonger
October 22nd, 2003, 07:26 PM
siskol P: thanks, much appreciated man.
main loop: i know what you mean when you referred to the proportions that i used and yes i do take and have done life drawing before and i do understand natural proportions. I don't mean to sound lame by using the "its my style" comment... but in this case, it is. Alot of my anatomy stylization is drawn from the capcom artists. If you've seen the work that their various artists use.. the anatomy is quite often exaggerated ( big hands, long forearms, enlarged torsos, etc..) It's a style that appeals to me. I try to take my anatomy into very careful consideration when i draw. Big hands that seem to be able to grip an entire head, when in real life a hand should just barely be able to cover ones face, are characteristics of certain pieces in my artwork, but that's the way i choose to do so. To put it simply, i think it looks cool, but it doesn't mean that i can't draw something to the correct proportions of an actual person... and gouache.. i'd like to try them one day.. but at the moment i'm trying to tackle projects with oils. I've thought about colouring a few in natural media but i think i'll leave this line work to digital colouring.
digitalgannon: heh, though i love falcoon's colouring style.. I think i'm gonna try to find a method of my own. Dunno what it is yet, i just gotta play around with PS or painter a bit.

Your art is an inspiration, those drawings are simply stunning great, keep them commin' mate.

October 23rd, 2003, 12:34 AM
yeah, i feel you.. the stylization is totally evident, and ive seen the capcom stuff (hasnt everyone?) and i cant say i care for it much, but i do like to see that people can draw what they see and not just copy someone else's style, ya know? but its cool that you can draw.. keep doin you.. i would like to see some colored work, digital or traditional
Kwonger
October 23rd, 2003, 01:22 AM
Luke: heh will do.. n thanks
Main Loop: No doubt a proficient artist should be able to vary their work in styles, methods, and what not and yeah i totally know what you mean. I don't consider myself as a copycat artist though.. because i think of a style obviously more than just the way anatomy is drawn..n i'm sure you kno that there are many other factors to a style. even tho their work inspires me and it obviously shows.. there are a lotta other things that makes my work different and unique in its own right and i kno that my own personal style will develop and be more evident in the future. Everyone has an influence one way or another.. whether it be from actual life or from another artist.. i kno that life drawing is a necessity to improve technical skill and understanding.. but to be honest.. drawing real life subject matter isn't quite nearly as interesting to me as things from the imagination that allow me to create things in the way i want.
... but yeah, i'll keep doin what i do. man i've typed way too much.. i'll just let my work speak for itself.

Kwonger-
Do you usually use references for the little ethnic seams and patterns that you put in the clothing, or do you just wing it?
Like your Mexican dude...his outfit is "Mexican-looking," and if I was drawing a Mexican guy, I don't think I would know off the top of my head what Mexican clothing should look like. Id have to look at some stuff first. Just wondering of you do it the same way.

Kwonger
October 26th, 2003, 03:43 AM
DustinBrown: most of the time i wing it and have a vague idea of what an authentic piece of clothing or pattern may look like.. for the matador piece.. i had a general idea of what his costume would look like, but no idea of the type of patterns. i found a poor reference pic on google image search... really blurry so i couldn't pick out any definate patterns to help give me inspiration. I just tried to find general areas were details would be located on a bull fighters costume n just winged the pattern from there. turned out alright.
0kelvin: thas wikked, where'd you first hear of em? yeh i've only done like 1 previous piece for em before those 3 displayed in this post.
S13Drifter: heh thx.. yeh will do. heh but a lil fan art sumtimes doesn't hurt :D

great stuff! your line quality is excellent and your characters have a lot of gesture. i'm just dying to see one in colour!
ummm. crit? maybe a little bit of environment indication? like not enough to take away from the fact that the character is STUNNING but maybe a touch of a groundplane with rocks and shrubs or something. it just adds another level of believability to your character.

SwiftMrLobster: I sketch with scarlet red col-erase pencils and 11x14 or 14x17 Canson sketch pads. I like working with a lot of space.
Strang: I used to sketch all over the place.. something i should go back to... well it depends.. sumtimes it helps to do a lil messy thumbnails sketch of a costume before i go on to the actual pic. But normally i sketch lightly and clean as i go, if there's a line that i don't want and may distract me later on, then i'll just erase it.

Wow. I've been checking on your thread often as it's very inspiring. I really love the way you emulate the anime/capcom style. And you do clean it all up very nicely at the end. It seems very tight and well proportioned. Awesome job, dude. You've gotta get a website up and update more often.
I'm curious how you study for drawing and how your anatomy looks so nice. Do you start off drawing rather loosely? You've gotta show us some works in progress. It's always helpful to other artists (at least me) to see where things begin and end up. I really want to see the ones you struggled with so I can see how you sorted 'em out. Great, great work. Please give some of us crappier artists some insight! LoL
Ryan
PS: What's with this game X2 or whatever. I followed the links for your drawings back to that. Are you drawing the art for it?
Mr. Personality
November 19th, 2003, 10:51 AM
You've got ridiculous amounts of game. I'm really diggin' the girl with the umbrella and the demon picture. I actually like the over-the-top muscle definition in the demon's back. The demon actually has weight and presence. Even from behind it is menacing.
Like others have mentioned, your clean line work and attention to detail makes these images stand out even more. Keep it up!
I can't believe I just noticed this thread today.
