View Full Version : Learning to draw (again)
Bugmeyer

There was a time when I used to just draw for myself and every time I applied pencil to paper I felt like I was learning something new. But over time it feels like I'm slowly drifting off the tracks. So I'm trying to learn how to draw. Again.
Feedback is more than welcome.

woo welcome to CA man :yayca:
overall great first post,
nice use of line in your pencil works, how they get thicker/heavier and softer on the nude chick is sweet, and very effective
thanks for sharing, (and share more

Hey I just realized you are the guy that does all of the awesome video tutorials on youtube. I have a question on "removing the white from a drawing". I have tried it and I already use level adjustments and everything but the ctrl+alt+tilde, dynamic selection does not work for me, the hotkeys do not go through, and I was wondering how to get the dynamic selection without the hotkeys, or how to enable the hotkeys somehow
I appreciate any help you can give, thanks man and keep up the artwork your concepts are great

Great start! =)
I'm loving the linework, especially when you go bold and chunky - like you did in this (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=595405&stc=1&d=1234845081) for instance.
Keep them coming!

That hotkey can be finicky. First off, it doesn't work on macs(even though its listed). Secondly, it doesn't work if you have certain tools selected (having the paintbrush tool out works). Thirdly, it got changed to ctrl+alt+2 on CS4. Go fig.
If that doesn't do it, open your 'channels' panel and ctrl(cmd)+click on the RGB channel. That always works. Best of luck :)
Anyone who doesn't know WTF I am talking about can go to my youtube channel www.youtube.com/bugmeyer Seriously, I'm amazed how many people are commenting that they've seen these things. Thanks for all the love.

Hey man! I got excited when I saw this sketchbook avatar. I've watched your youtube videos, and listened to your podcast. Really great work, glad to see the sketchbook you talked about getting up in the podcast. Also, looking forward to more podcasts, was hoping there was more after I listened to the first.
Looking forward to watching this sketchbook develop.

W.I.P. has been monthly for now, but I wouldn't be surprised if we did it more often once we work out all the kinks. In the mean time we are gonna brew up a new ep as soon as we've got a months worth of content. Always glad to hear from the community about it :)
I did some sketches tonight...but I'm posting the progress I made tonight on this painting instead. Seriously though, I need to do more sketching. My pencils reek.

I would love to see you tackle a couple languid poses. Your figures are all very dynamic, but they all have stiff necks, straight backs and taut muscles. Even the woman laying down looks unrelaxed. You can get flowing features in your clothes and it would be interesting to see if you could find a different set of gravity and weight to your characters than you normally do.

Really enjoy your style, and you manage to achieve a nice painterly effect in PS.
One thing I have noticed however, and I might be wrong, but you seem to really put most of your effort into the upper bodies of your characters, and not so much in lower limbs. There is a lot of repetition in stance and leg position in your galleries (if the image even includes them at all).
The lower body may not seem as expressive as say...the face or hands (hand positions might still be giving you a little trouble as well?), but if the legs and feet couldn't help convey emotion...well dancing wouldn't feature leg/foot movement so much would it?
Looking forward to seeing more sketches. ^_^

Went and got married :) So that's why I haven't been updating recently. But I'm back now and I've been working on some random things. I've got a few sketches, but I haven't scanned them yet...
In the mean time, I can post my recent progress on Matariel's remake. He's much more like the original now, which made me feel dreadfully unoriginal overall but seems to be the best direction for him right now.
Let me know what you think.
Also, WIP ep2 is in the can and just needs to be edited. Working on that tomorrow!

Hey man, I'm really liking that last piece, it looks good. No real crits, as I'm not really close enough to that level to be of help in that area.
Also, I listened to your 2nd podcast and just wanted to say it was really good. I've tried listening to like 1 or 2 other art podcasts but I don't enjoy any of them nearly as much as yours. It really is something entertaining and informative to listen to while drawing, which I definitely choose over music. Looking forward to more.
