oh my god.... these are amazing!! a shame that something like this won't(?) be used. what will happen to these pictures? do unused concepts just get thrown away?
don't know what else to say, i love your work. glad to see you entering the thunderdome. good luck! i look forward to your next post

Say... that's a lot of detail... I wouldn't like to play the "find five faults/differences" game with any of those.
(edit: well you can cheat with using the difference layer mode in PS nowdays).
You should color them, sell them to dentists who can put them up in the roof over the chair. Needs some gnomes walking around on the platforms though.

couple more from a different project. forgive the poses, they are a little stiff/awkward. I suppose I let the details and the costume come first... :|

and here is an unfinished texture on a model of one of the concepts. The model was done by John Cboins. I did the texturing. This never went anywhere...

Man, these are great. The first drawing has insane amounts of detial. Great job!
The one thing that sucks is that you do cool drawings, but they dont get used.
I guess that's how the cookie crumbles...

Hey, so the model you've posted rocks. Big time. My room-mate works at Digital Extremes (made UT2003) so I was getting his reaction to the models (he's a modeller there). We spent about 20 minutes oogling over your landscape concepts (there's just so much to look at) then we got to your models and were, for lack of a better term, blown away.
My only critique.. the skin on the back of his head looks pretty bad. I had sounding blunt but I've just woken up an hour ago and am not thinking. Perhaps don't make it so dark and angular.
I'm most impressed with his face and from his knees down.
Killer job!

hm? did anyone say "detail"?
The first two pictures are two of the heaviest pictures that I saw ever! Maybe they really are the two heaviest.
Anyways, in-cre-di-ble
Thanks for sharing, keep posting!

Any idea how many triangles on that model? Just curious. A wireframe would be hot.
Let me guess... Planescape?

Thank god for this forum, or genius like this would go unseen. My favorite part? The cutaway cavern areas- you have mastered 3d form, kamerad!

Wow Ultramarinez, the most detailed envirionments ever. That 3d character looks very cool, the realism and lighting in the face is great.

daaaaaa....
Wowie. Ok uberness, on all levels, that model rocks, so does the texture, your set designs are pimp, and whoever canned that project deserves a slow painful death.

SwitchbladeArchitect - That is funny, my mom said the same thing! ;) Thanks man!
Capt.Harlock - Thanks! When something doesn't get used, for whatever reason (unless you do a terrible job), you still get paid and you then you have that work for your portfolio and you may not have to wait until the product is released to show it around.
Prometheus|ANJ - somehow, I think you don't approve. LOL I think these drawings represent the anti-prom. You do so much, with so little detail, drawings like these must seem pointless/overworked to you, eh? Hopefully they look like they could be used for more than to play the "find five faults/differences" game or a home for gnomes. :)
JOSHUATHEJAMES - Wow! Thanks a ton!
AcidDrone - Thanks!
Jack Frost - I did get paid for them. Pheww! The company that I was working for decided that they guy who did the characters for the game should do the environments too, for more consistancy. In this case, that happened to be Joe Madureira. I think they made the right call! :)
Ant4d - The model was done by a gauy named John Cboins, very talented. We didn't get the chance to model the girl though, so this is it for her. :(
I.was.ink - Some projects are particularly concept heavy, and when that happens, a lot of concepts don't get used. In the video game industry, you kind of get used to that. I have worked on a couple games that never saw the light of day. That is pretty tough actually. You still have the work and the experience, but it is still tough when a whole project gets axed.
rodrigo! - Thanks!
ProudestMonkey - Wow! Cool name Monkey! Thanks for the response too. :)
ClocktowerArtworks - Thank you.
pogonip - The first images were for a game called Exarch and the second batch were for a demo for a game based on the Runelords series. Thanks for the comliments on the texture too. I have been doing textures in games for quite a while. I getting out of games at this point though, at least on a full-time basis, to do freelance. We'll see how it goes.
gazmac, Yoko Kanno, cucaracha, Teknoholic, Halis-Artrous, chukw, Chris J. Anderson! and Bboy Waldo - Thanks a ton for the great response. I think there are about 3000 polys in that character. The project the top three were for didn't actually get cancelled, they just decided to have all the concepts done by the same person (Joe Mad). I agree with the decision too. Thanks again for all the kind words. It makes me feel great.

hey howard! we used some of that necron city stuff:) now they're gonna bust you!! oohh man, I love the texture work of the guy in the armor..don't think i ever saw that one, that face is creepy real. it's always nice to see the fog-esque swrils and ghostly old man faces sneak in to the realistic stuff:) keep up the good work! good luck on future projects where your talent will be used more bettering!

A+ work man.
That top one must have taken you a very long time to complete. (How long, btw?)
I'd love to see some thumbnails if you got them.
Again, great work.

Damn Howard, you and John are some insanly talented artists! I consider it an honor and a privalege to have interned under you two at Fog's.
You have a Geoff Darrow quality to your art work. Insane....I can't say enough good.
It's a shame you're getting out of games, but due to recent events I can totaly understand.

Phil and Kress- The top two took about 25-30 hours and the forest piece was bout 15 hours. Not terribly long, not really fast either. I do have some thumbnails of the first one, but I am not sure where they are. I just moved and some of the loose page stuff I have done is missing. If I find them I will post them. The others, I didn't do any thumbnails. Thank you for the nice words.
enoc - I work on plate bristol so the surface is a pretty good one for detail. I start with a 4H lead and then move to an HB lead. The darker lines are just more pressure and little thick too.
Loga4 - Thank you
Shadowkiller - I had some pictures of some cathederals for reference on the first one, nothing on the second and then some shots of trees for the third. The people, I freehanded the guy and had some reference for the girl.
Eric! - Thanks man. I haven't heard from you in some time. Message me and let me know what you have been up to. Thanks for the compliment and I will pass it along to John too. I am looking forward to going 100% freelance. We'll see how it goes. I am working on some paintings for a gallery as well as some other stuff. Talk to you later.

ok, sorry for bringing this post from the dead, but iv had the top picture you've done as my desktop for around 2+ weeks and im still finding stuff... i did a 10 min search to find this post and make this comment on it. but one thing thats really been getting me. the robotic arms in the middle pit thing just seem to take away from the total and complete perfection in this peice. sorry to have to bring that up, but christ... omg *orgasm*
