Eow 106 Winners Choice: The Great Wall
as winner of EOW 102 Trasy has proposed "The Great Wall"
no specified era or location just a huge barrier dividing some part of a location from some other part, usually in the nature of a fortification.
should be monumental, one of the wonders of what ever worls you chooes to place it on

This will be my first go at EOW. I'm hoping that the Sunday deadline is extended, since the Atlantis one seems to have encroached upon this one. Great job all around on the Atlantis EOW, BTW!

I'm going for a 'fallen ruins' vibe on this one, pretty pleased with the composition of the thing so far, at this rough sketch stage. Any thoughts?
I'm also finally going digital on this one, so i actually have the chance to post WIPs and be able to make improvements based on crits.

when i heard of wall i didn't want to do a traditional brick wall or something similar, so i thought of somr sort of digital wall that separates our world from another.

Grats on the move to digitial ;) My only thought on crit is to give the top edge of the far left wall a little more of a weathered silhouette... maybe even just slightly, like a notch or two. Unless of course you have reason to have a pristine section next to the demolition.
thescala> I was trying to think of an original approach to this one. Your idea didn't even occur to me. Very nice. Makes me want to rethink what I've got working in my head. Hmmm, we'll see.

Here's my basic composition, so far. I'm thinking along the lines of a megalithic wall that exudes a sort of pestilence and decay. I want to have the foliage appear as if it's receding away from the wall, and the ground nearest is charred and blackened. I plan to implement more complicated ornamentation to the wall, itself. I just wanted to get the comp done for it, first. I'm open to any suggestions. I'll probably litter a few rotting carcasses of birds and other wildlife that got too close.

thescala> I assume you're talking about mine. =) Heh, I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm more of a "feel-my-way-through-the-painting" kind of guy. I'll do what I can to push the perspective. I sort of modeled it after some tourist photos of the great wall I found. I worked on this late last night, so now that I'm more awake, I agree with you. It doesn't look that much like what I was going for. It's Valentine's Day, so the wife will be getting most of my attention, but she's also sick, so I might take the time to post some additional comps. Looking back at my reference, the wall is generally built along the crest of the mountains (not the slopes). Thanks for the input! I still feel very much the novice at concept painting, so don't hesitate to get more literal or suggestive with your crit, if you see anything.
Oh, and the stuff on the right is supposed to be the top of a forest. I know it's pretty fuzzy right now, but the wall is supposed to be huge. I just haven't taken the time to put in detailed scalar elements. I'll do that today, too.
Thinking about it some more and looking at aberrant85's piece, a wall is generally built to keep something out or in, so I may lean toward having one side of my wall completely decayed/charred/plagued and have just the part near the wall tormented on the other side. Perhaps I'll put some insidious creatures on the icky side. This is a good project. It's definitely going to force me to play with the comp a bit to show everything I want to.

So here's round 2 of my comp. I, for one, think it is much better. The foreground wall and the distant snake of it give it a much more dramatic and grandiose feel. Putting it on the apex of a mountain crest gives it more of a "separating" feel, and making the forest more distinct helped a lot. I also got to play around with more atmospheric perspective.
The wall still needs some fine-tuning to get the perspective right (particularly the section adjacent to the foreground slab), but overall, I'm happy with the direction it's heading. Thanks for the crit, thescala. Sometimes just having someone to get me to question myself goes a long way.

aberrant85 - looks great! Looking forward to the final
Janto - Nice comp, maybe move the mid ground spire slightly left or right so its not sitting dead centre?
thescala - looking good. A few implied objects in the middle (tiny cities/roads/trees etc) might help emphasise scale? Maybe! The colour of the guy on the left makes him blend into the similarly coloured background - maybe try a colour shift?
Okcyde - the scale is much more obvious in your new thumb, nice work!
Here's a WIP, although I don't know how much more time I can spend on it. I wanted to do a more close up shot of a corner of the wall, figured it could be a different spin on things.
Crits definitely welcome.

Cheers Ramza, hadn't twigged the dead center-ness of the spire. I've moved it out, and begun to play with colour, nothing final yet though. Quick post before bed, so crits etc. tomorrow.

Thanks Ramza! I've since widened the frame a bit and given more attention to the perspective of the wall, too. I'll restrain from posting a third iteration of the comp and post a color one when it's ready.

Didn't turn out as I wanted. Instead, I have a plain wall and doesn't look so great. In other words, boring as hell, but oh well.
