ROUND #147 :: BABA YAGA - IDW CROSSOVER

DESCRIPTION

Baba Yaga, notoriously evil witch of legend.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_Yaga

For recent renditions, I suggest 'Hellboy' and 'Fables'.

Again, like Titania, free to interpret, though a sci-fi baba yaga might be a little out of place. :]

IDW will be running a tandem event - here's the link, so be sure to check it out: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=149872

very nice choice daestwen, check out "enchantment" by orson scott card, the whole book pretty much involves baba yaga, she was a right evil witch with some major power,

Ooh, good idea. I don't think the Baba Yaga is completely evil, though. She seems to be at least fair in some stories. The version in the Hellboy universe is pretty cool, too.

This will be my first time participating, I'm very excited. :)

daestwen: Another great TOPIC! I plan on utilizing all the time this round... I'm hoping to go with top notch quality on this one... I made a bunch of texture brushes for PS and hopefully I can pull off a more professional composition this time.

P.S is there a way I can change my user name... I see my name and my pen name are confusing people... but I don't want to start a whole new account... or is that the only way?

Cool. Always been fascinated with the hut on chicken legs. Highly unlikely that I'll get anything finished this week, but this was a fun way to warm up before work if nothing else.

I like a traditional, child frightening witch ( nothing much scarier than evil old ladies if you ask me ) so I've tried to make my Baba Yaga as unsettling as possible. Hopefully hiding her body under layers of skirts and aprons so she looks like a bundle of dirty rags with some twisted limbs poking out will do the trick. I've given her chicken's feet too - that suggests her having a weird scuttling, hopping movement which I like.

very cool idea for comp. Going for nothing original, old hag, more horror into this one. rough sketch, got metal stuff and dirty little thingies (holding up her sagged face) in lieu with the crossover.

Me like this one 2 ... actually never heard of her, but she has some great "ingredients" in her story.... good luck to everyone!! This is going to be a "pretty" scary round I'm guessing...

Matt Dixon Fast one out. Like.

February 9th, 2009, 10:31 AM
First I wasn't gonna enter but then I got such a great idea for the concept...

What if Baba was infact an alien exiled from her homeplanet, who found
a new home in the deep russian forest where she lived for centurys
killing and eating anything or anyone who got too close. The house with chicken feet would obviusly be the spacecraft
and the flying mortar some kind of personal transportation device.

:teeth:

I will still make her very witch-like and not too unhuman, and try to stay away from any classical sf looks.

Quick sketch-

Wiggers - Looking good. I really like the colour scheme you've chosen too.

WunderDark - Nice concept.

Slapped some colour on at lucnh time. Don't know whether to follow my initial thoughts and and pick her out of a very dark scene with a splash of light, or brighten the background to play up her distorted silhouette. I think the former would have more impact when finished even though the second looks a little better as a rough. Went with the first face, so glad to hear that's the favourite!

OH OH! Baba Yaga! Great. I'm in. :)
I come from Serbia. We call Baba Yaga - Baba Roga out there. Parents use stories about Baba Roga to scare children when they don't want to go to sleep. Something like, she will be under your bed if you don't get to sleep 'till midnight. :D

Man, I got really scared few times because of this old cow when I was kid. :)

February 9th, 2009, 02:48 PM
Great work everyone!

Here is my first WIP. For some reason when I was kid I used to imagine Baba Yaga with a cigarette. So I used this opportunity to draw her with a cigarette. :)

Here's my wip.. trying black and white start.. colouring will be interesting :D I think I might have to high contrast on it.. too strong lights and darks.

Matt Dixon - Looking really good! You've been an inspiration to me ever since I knew you existed.. got any tips on how to approach colouring on a black'n white piece?

Wiggers - Nice sketch! looking forward to see where you take it.

Pixeltuner - haha damn you had me there.. I found her attractive until I saw the face :P looking good!

Dwinbotp - Great face!

Yongs - Cool picture man, one note though - this is just me, but to me it reads like any other necromancer / deathwizard-thing, and not so much witch.

Wunderdark - funny sketch haha. Her house is hilarious :D

Stoat - Great start! I like the painterly look.

Joey-b - My eyes.. ! lol j/k :P it's gonna be fun to see where you take this.

Nikola Marincovic - Haha a cigarette.. I couldn't help but to think ".. and kids, don't smoke" when watching it. her hand seems to give away exactly that message :P

DefiledVisions: Thx, and no problem ;) Yours is looking like a decent kiddie snatcher already :D

I've had another idea though. More of a zombie-ish, foul witch who scours the forests/swamps at night in search of fresh children to devour. Sounds like fun eh?

Matt Dixon
February 9th, 2009, 04:51 PM
Defiled Visions - The way I work is to set the tonal painting to 'multiply', drop the opacity a little, then block in colour with a big brush on the layer below. This tends to lessen the contrast so once I'm happy with the basic lay in of colour, I flatten everything and re-establish the darks and lights. Sometimes a quick pull on the contrast controls is enough though I'm happier painting them in. What I should have at that point is a very rough version of my finished painting and all that remains is to tidy and tighten things up until it looks done. The important thing is to make sure each stage - values first, colour second, finishing third - is fully resolved before progressing to the next. Does that make sense?

@Matt Dixon, I'm now a fan:)

February 9th, 2009, 05:11 PM
Looking good so far guys... I was wondering if a 'cyber-punk' theme or post-apocalyptic approach is okay for this? Baba Yaga seems ripe for either of those themes to me. Just for reference, every time I suggest cyber-punk, I'm meaning moreso the fantastic Shadowrun type universe (magic meets man and machine) :)

Pixeltuner - Great atmosphere in the new one. Just a bit too dark on my monitors, though?

dwinbotp - Digging the concept you've gone for, but I wonder how well it will translate in a full figure piece? Might get a bit lost? Are you going to apply the same stuff to the body?

Kian - Glad you're busy but I hope you find time to move that along, it's a great sketch.

I want to do a more cutesy witch--shes going to be pulled around by the classic ugly dumb/oblivious monster...(probably some panda frankenstein creature with wings)...

dwinbotp - Love that new pose. Menacing! I don't think you should necessarily discount the staples and stuff completely, just noting that it'd easily get lost in a full figure image.

dayz - Haha! Like it! Could her pet monster be carrying, rather than dragging, her? Might be a more interesting presentation that two separate characters linked by a leash? Same pose and expression would work.

Woo boy, this is an awesome subject for CHOW, being as one of my favorite artists, Ivan Bilibin, has illustrated Baba Yaga several times, good stuff. Gonna try to do CHOW more often as well.

joyproject - Runes!!! Interesting incorporation of them, the expression on baba yaga is great, perfect old lady face.

MattDixon - Awesome development and colors, I like how you gave her chicken legs.

Wiggers - Looking awesome so far, I like the guy in the lower right, you don't notice him at first, I like paintings that do that.

dwinbotp - incredible face, reminds me of a goblin. The colored face is absolutely fantastic and horribly frightening as well, the lighting on it is awesome.

yongs - I like the pose a lot and your interpretation of Baba Yaga, its staying true to what she is as well as showing something new.

DefiledVisions - Another very interesting take on Baba Yaga, I like how she has multiple arms and is using the flowers as a lure, great composition and values :)

Pixeltuner - Interesting to see her depicted as younger, it definitely works with what you want to do though so its all good, I'm sure it will come out surpassing supreme excellence.

fersteger - reminds me of the king of the woolies from Samurai Jack haha, awesome so far

Dan! - The pose on the right is awesome, reminds me of stuff my friend would do

Kian - looking pretty effin sweet so far, the composition and pose are both awesome, it has great atmosphere to it.

bangalore_monkey - For whatever reason it reminds me of the comic called The Marquis, this is a good thing, and yours is pretty sweet.

JohnGrello - Incredibly dynamic composition, really gives the feeling of movement, I cannot wait to see this when finished, I like how you included the horsemen too!

Adam Schumpert - Great pose, full of action and the expression on the face is awesome too.

IanLlanas - When I started working on this I had the same idea for your second picture haha. Awesome stuff so far

I pretty much went for the standard Old Hag Yaga. I thought the idea of her holding a girl by her braids was amusing, and I liked the idea of the Chicken Legged House in the background like Ivan Bilibin's illustration. Started with a pencil sketch then drew it up in Photoshop. And for whatever reason, shes naked :/

Nice work everyone, I thought I’d start trying my hand at some chows to help me improve so any help or advice would be most welcome.

Well here’s my Baba Yaga so far, moving on to the colour next.

I’ve incorporated some Russian folk dress as I like the idea that she was once young at beautiful and of a noble line.
Hopefully it’s not to dark for you monitors let me know if it is

There's some awesomely creepy stuff in here. Really nice.

I'm taking a less evil approach to her; assuming she's an intensely crazy old woman who lives in the mountains. What good or evil she does is perhaps just misunderstanding. Those pure of heart already had the knowledge they sought and her advice is, in fact, nothing but gibberish.

Lunchtime sketch. The feet aren't right yet...

I'll try and do some crits this time round.

Edit01: After work update. Increased the composition and started on other elements... Decided boots felt more appropriate than clogs!

Edit02: Washy colour. This is going to be a very dark image. I'm going to go for a sort of chirascuro effect. Might work, might not!

Edit03: Just had some good feedback on how to improve the current colour version. But for now, going to work some more on the face and bring her out of the background a bit. Tree needs attention and I the birds brought out a bit (what birds! Exactly!), but I kind of like the heavy shadows... I'll see where it goes.

Hello, This is my first post on Conceptart.org.

I've been wanting to practice my drawing and digital painting skills for years now.. But have never organized the time in life to do so. :) I'm going to make a point of doing a little something everyday. Boy I'm rusty and under practiced. :)

This is a quick sketch to lay out some composition for the scene. The first idea i had was to do the picture in a classic story book style and feeling.. Nothing too detailed very illustration oriented. I'm picturing a fairly dark forest scene with an opening in the tress where you see her house.. and maybe some bright foreground light from somewhere. This all depends on my painting skills that have yet to be executed.. lol Baba will most likely change a lot but I'm not sure I should. I should just try and focus on getting something coloured for my first attempt. Any help of course or ideas would be great full.

I guess I'm going with a significantly less evil approach ;) Although I love the creepy, scary Baba-Yaga's up so far, I'm going with the notion of an eccentric, self-reliable wise ol' bat; perhaps grumpy and cunning, but not a kid-eating monster. I want it to have somewhat of a 'folkloric' feel, but we'll see how that goes...

little fine liner sketch for tonight. the face is a bit too conventional i guess, but i had to get this out of me head...

hope u like :)

EDIT: i did another sketch 2 nights ago, and i think i'd like to turn this into an illustration at some point. could be that the focus will shift a little from her to the boy and therefore not sure whether that may be a problem for this CHOW...

i am still working on a former CHOW inspired pic, the Tlaloc sacrifice(wip (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=5677575#post5677575)), and i couldn't do another one where the little guy/girl seems so devotional to the horrid forthcoming events. this lil guy has a plan :)

i am going to change the pose of her hand and put a broom there i think, on which a lot of her weight will be. the mortar and such i will place at the back i guess...

anyways, would love to hear what you think.

Artofinca - Awesome house concept, love steam powered anything so steam power + baba yaga = infinite awesome

benu - i like the idea and it looks awesome so far, get some value in there

Joey-b - that is one nasty ass woman right there, looks awesome

AsurA - Awesome way to start off your adventures on conceptart! Looks really cool, the house is especially awesome.

Sekino - I like what you're going for, because I had read that Baba Yaga in some stories is an old wise woman which people get advice from, so its cool to see someone taking that aspect of her.

Wiggers - still awesome, just keeps looking better and better, the house is quite supreme as well!

markusthebarbarian - great forest feel, great composition and great expression, what brushes did you use for the branches and brushy feel?

Sulk-Sal - that is pretty damn awesome, the skull hat and the chain are awesome looking, and the kid in the pot gave me lulz, he no wanna be eated

MJ_Alcazar - Cool concept so far, reminds me of the faun from Pan's Labyrinth

lAhlbeck - looks good so far, the body seems a little small? the face is good though

Thanks, Wolfentir. I got this idea a bit from Neil Gaiman's Baba Yaga in Sandman, where she's not exactly 'nice' but she'll help out and give advices for a price.

AsurA, the freaked out little squirrel (or cat?) in the background had me LOL. Nice touch! ;)

weird chicken feet is a strange idea but i like it :) kind of makes babe perched in a tree waiting more believable, not that chickens sit in trees but anyway here it is #1

dirkvandulmen: Thanks for the props :) its just an old comic book trick I use... blue lining... I don't think its a huge secret but its a great tool... drop a really rough sketch of what you want... Drop the opacity and draw cleaner lines over top. Looking good Dirk.. but I really like the 3rd image with just the flat colors... the 4th stage you have up now is a lil over lit... and lost some of the charm of the that REALLY good 3 stage.

Looks like another jam-packed round of fun and frolics!

Kian - Don't wuss out on us, Jon. That looks awesome so far.

John Bridges - What a great start. Looking forward to seeing it progress.

DefiledVisions - I think you might be in danger of breaking the 3/4 rule with your current composition unless you're planning to pull Baba Yaga out of the shadows. Creative chaos is good. :teeth: Just watch that you don't noodle yourself into a corner. Assuming you've resolved each stage satisfactorily, you can look back to the previous steps to help get back on target if you get a bit lost.

dwinbotp - Nice fleshy belly there, but I have to be honest and say that I think you've lost a lot of good stuff that was in your sketch. Particularly that nice flowy chunk of hair which gave her some movement and also the face. The new one is more horrific for sure, but I think the gleeful leer in your sketch is equally frightening.

Aly Fell

Inkfish - Great pose and atmosphere. To take it further you need to start detailing. I don't know what resolution you're working at, but I guess it's quite small. Now you've got the basics down, upsize the image, and concentrate on specific areas. The face, the hands, and detail on her clothes. I think perhaps she could do with being a little taller, just a fraction. :)

Boyo: Really dig your style. That's awesome.
JOHNGRELLO: I'm really glad someone's doing the horsemen. Coming along really nicely.
John Bridges: Nice composition, and I like the traditional take on her.

I'm looking forward to so many of these.

Here's values for mine. Moving onto the background now and gonna start on some color. Cheers.

dwinbotp - Nice fleshy belly there, but I have to be honest and say that I think you've lost a lot of good stuff that was in your sketch. Particularly that nice flowy chunk of hair which gave her some movement and also the face. The new one is more horrific for sure, but I think the gleeful leer in your sketch is equally frightening.

I know Matt what you mean, unfortunately, I'm changing both faces, they just seemed too generic now, can't finish it, the more I look at it the more I hate it LOL. So, I'm cooking up something different and will post it when done, thanks for the crits, much appreciated:)

thanks matt dixon for the advice---I doodled a few more designs and I like having the creature as sort of the rock mortar monster...

the witch will be sitting atop the monster...

I want to keep the creature pretty dark..parts of him almost just pure sillouhette and have pieces only on selected parts...

DAAAAMN! The shear brilliance of these works is inspiring, must come back and C&C later. I love the broad spectrum of takes on Baba Yaga, everything from whimsical to horrific. We'd almost have a book on her here. Quick update then off to regular work. Decided to go the children eating route :yum:

Posted some of these already in the IDW thread, but since I also decided to do Baba Yaga herself I might as well post all of them in here to spam for IDW a bit.

Went for the lower right mortar of the thumbnails. The hut needs tons of work and I think I'll continue with that first, but I figured I needed to see where my Baba Yaga was headed style-wise to continue with the rest.

Kinda happy with where the sketch is going so far, but I think I'll leave her to the weekend now :)

IanLlanas: Love the choice you made, this one caught my eye as I scrolled through earlier. I'm not sure which is more horrific the way the hands grab the child or the horrific face, she really looks as though she is about to devour the child. Will be looking forward to seeing this develop.

darkly
February 11th, 2009, 07:37 PM
Wiggers: nice concept!

Stoat: Love the expression of the face and the color!

Pixeltuner: Yours gives me the willies every time I see it, which is awesome! I'm not sure if I like the feet though, but that could just be personal preference.

Matt Dixon:Defiled Visions - The way I work is to set the tonal painting to 'multiply', drop the opacity a little, then block in colour with a big brush on the layer below. Hey, thanks for sharing your wips and tips. I've been having some major issues with digital painting and it can get pretty frustrating. So I just played around with this method and I think it's going to make coloring about ten times easier and about five times faster than how I've been doing it. So if my concept turns out bad-ass I'm giving you total props. If not, I guess I have only myself to blame.

Dan: Good concept man!

Kian: You little whipper snapper you! Good to see you on here Jon! I haven't spoke with you almost since KaosWar. You are such a bad-ass! Your work is definitely looking good! Hope everything's going well for you man!

JOHNGRELLO: love the pose and direction you took with your concept! Also thanks for the wips! They're really helpful!

Mitze: Looking good so far!

Dayz: Cool stuff man!

Poshspice: Likin' it, lovin' it! She's got a real gypsy feel about her, which I like!

Joey-b: Her skin looks Yucky! Awesome!

Boyo: Yours is one of my faves! Just Terrific!

trevor: Love the concept! Very creepy!

Bevis: Awesome expression!

Adam Schumpert: That's quite a lot of work man, but it's going to be totally sweet when you're finished!

Ian Llanas: Aaah, scary!

Yoitisi: thanks for sharing your wips! Always an inspiration!

EVERYONE ELSE: There's about a billion other rad concepts so far. Really lookin' good everybody!

Okay, so I didn't get last ones finished so I better get my butt in gear, but I have a good feeling about this one. I think the most difficult thing is trying to be original within the constraints of the chow briefing. I tried going "out there" on this one, but it just wasn't Baba Yagay enough. So here's what I got so far....

Boyo : just love it!
Poshspice: Your work is very inspiring to me but since I'm getting used with your lunchtime sketches I'll dare to make a small crit: everything is to peaceful, like the not so old gypsy woman was hired to clean Baba's yard. C'mon, man, show us some guts!

Wow...Another amazing round. I need to try to take it up a notch if I want to make it in the polling :p

Thanks for the crits Wolfentir and sony! Hopefully with a bit more filled in I took care of the proportions a bit, but I like things big. World of Warcraft is a big influence for me (donno if that's good or bad :p)

Wolfentir - that is hard choice. I think I want to see more before I decide. I love the extreme angle on the second, but the first gives a clearer idea of the story. Also might depend on the 3/4ths rule. Still new here, so not sure how that would work.

sony - The PS3 is great, just so unexpected, but I have to say my favorite part is the mortar, very fitting knowing her chicken-feet house too. Just be careful with the anatomy of her neck and legs/feet.

JOHNGRELLO -Great dynamics. Can't say more. So cool.

Quinn Simoes - Amazing. Great mood, layout is great...oh man.

As for a few comments on my piece: The lines on the pestle are just for my own reference in shape, they won't be in the final. Kids hands will also be in when my camera is up and running. Should be able to start color tomorrow.

sony - thanks, i quite like your mortar/pot thingy with feet

bumskee - haha thanks :P, yours is really quite good great linework and the hair looks really cool!

tommoy - yours is incredible! it really looks like a scene out of a childrens fairy tale book or a still from an animation.

manabanana - damn shes bony, i really like the costume and the forest atmosphere youve created.

hutachip - crazy sketch man, reminds me of H.R. Giger almost., did you do it on 3 pieces of paper? the painting looks really good as well

dayz - awesome monster! cant wait to see more!

IanLlanas - Looking great! I love the kid pulling on the one who's about to be eaten, and the other one in the mortar's expression is priceless, i lol'd a bit when i saw it.

Senpen - looks pretty good so far, the pestle is fucking crazy, great job with that.

yoitisi - that house is beyond words, its amazing, i would love to live in it.

pepps - looks pretty sweet so far, great sense of atmosphere and good composition too!

dan liimatta - wow, awesome entry so far especially for a first chow, cool progress, cant wait to see how it turns out

Hybrid_75 - damn them is some nasty old hags. I like the inclusion of bones and skulls in the hair.

Adam Hunter Peck - great inspiration material, the colors are really cool, altogether cool piece!

Sekino - awesome progress! it really has that folky feel to it.

Quinn Simoes - really cool looking, a refreshing take on Baba Yaga

Sulk-Sal - good progress and thanks for the comments, I'm still wondering as well about the whole 3/4 thing, even so its just such an awesome character to draw.

Thank you wolfentir and Sony for the comments! A more vulture-like pose is a good idea, I felt her pose was a bit stiff and boring.

chow is getting insane in quantity and quality.

Ionic- She's really looking dangerous, I like the face. Good sense of dynamic movement. One of my favourites.

Wiggers- looks a bit flat imo. Cool character design, though.

sony- the angle of the wings looks off, esp. her right wing. Th mortar with the feet is cool.

Tommoy- Also doing a half ckicken/ half human baba yaga? I like all the flowing hair, feathers and cloth. Also one of my favourites.

wolfentir- cool perspective. she doesn't look evil at all, more like a grumpy little old lady.

buffichar- don't be chicken, it's looking too good not to enter. Good job with the lighting.

Pixeltuner- would'nt want to meet her in a dark alley.

dwinbotp- what a beuty. -I dont know what else to say.

IanLlanas- Poor kids. They look really horrified. Is she smashing the boys skull with her hands?

New sketch, I think the pose works better.

Wow, great entries I'm really amazed by the overall quality, even some guys that still don't have such a great technique are compensating with great original ideas and violent compositions.
This will be my first CHOW (I regret a lot that I couldn't enter the last one, Titania seem like a great topic).
For some reason as much as I love witches I didn't get much inspiration in this concept. This is what I did, but I need to put something in there that really makes it interesting, I don't know what. It still at an early step, I don't even know if I'll continue doing the house and the sticks.
I don't know either what to do with the face, perhaps I'll leave it as it is.
I don't think that it's looking russian enough.
Anyway, If someone could give a hand with some opinion, it would be great.
Nice to be on board!

Lennon - The hood seems closed at the chin but still hair manages to get out?
maybe let a big ugly nose stick out of the black and some glowing eyes? dunno just thinkin of something

Pixeltuner - its more just like a female zombie.. im missing something like a broom, mortal- pestal

benu - i like the chicken/witch crossover :)

Nutter - that looks great! love the big nose

Tommoy - no crits just now, i love what ur doing here, good texturing and cute kiddie

Ionic - thats gonna look awesome i know for sure, wondering how wonderfull those horses will look after u've rendered them hehe

Wiggers - everything seems to be drawn seperatly, maybe add an overlayer with some warm colors in it? they crow in the front is fighting with the bucket, i'd move it a bit to the right
The tree's appear to be in front of her house but when looking at it one of them is behind it, i think u can fix this by givin that one tree a bit less contrast/ saturization in it, and i would put some more contrast +detail in the house. I love the face on the witch hehe

Sony - that looks nice, but i dont see why the wings are there, they dont add anything. if anything their confusing since its a witch not an angel

Excuse my long winded 'pats on the back' I'll try to get better at giving more constructive comments :)

Fersteger: I love what you've got so far, and for some reason I can't help but to feel nostalgic when I look at the image. It reminds me of something somewhere from my childhood, though I can't quite pinpoint what. The atmosphere in this is awesome!

Ionic: I really like the energy and composition and lighting in yours so far. Your Baba Yaga has a great expressive face, and she looks like a force to recon with!

Dayz: The sketches you posted are awesome, and I just can't wait to see what will you come up with! I'm intrigued and I want to see more of your art.

Poshspice: I like a lot where you are going with this. Your image has a classical storybook feel about it, and I find that very appealing. Her outfit looks great and interesting as well.

Artofinca: I really like her body shape and the contraption that she uses to move around. I think the idea that she's always cold and needs to be wrapped in a whole lot of stuff is cool.

Boyo: I absolutely love what you've got so far! I adore your style, and can't wait to see this finished!

Poojipoo: Did I lure you back by reminding you about the weeklies ;)? I like the composition and the perspective, she looks very menacing.

Tommoy: I like your interpretation so much! The design of your Baba Yaga is amazing, and the interaction with the kid is great. I'd love to see that in a storybook.

Adam Schumpert: Wow, looks like you are making a full blown illustration here! I like how much is going on in that image, and how much movement it's got. I also like how expressive the characters are - you can really see the terror in the kids, and how furious Baba Yaga is.

Yoitsi: I don't know what is it about yours, but I find her really attractive. I like her dark skin and hair quite a lot.

As for my own piece, I didn't want to look at this thread before I had some part of the picture completed, because I was afraid I'd get too influenced by other people's awesome ideas. I must say that it's been inspired quite a bit by Hayao Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" and that little black bird from "Spirited Away"

And it's still going...!

The amount and quality of the entries here is just amazing! Since I grew up with Baba Yaga stories, I feel like I just have to get in on it somehow...

Started with an idea of a flying / raging 'Yaga, but haven't got it nailed yet... also looks too much like Green Goblin. If I had lots of spare time, I'd work this idea up too... but as it is, I'm moving on to something simpler.

great work everyone.

dwinbotp - ultra creepy. love it! :)

Tommoy - awesome!

Pixeltuner - This is one really awesome work. But... On slavic languages BABA means grandma (and she is Slavic mythology character)
and your Baba
looks a bit, you know, young... But it's still awesome work. :)

Wingedchime - Can't wait to see more. It's great. :)

CCThrom - love it!

Ionic - LOVE the progress you've made.

Wingedchime - while this is a very cool image, you may want to go do a little more research/reading. While Baba Yaga does live in a chicken-legged hut, and she does ride around in a mortar and pestle, I don't think she ever rides a chicken. This could be an issue as far as staying on topic for the round.

JessiBean: Thank you for the constructive reply :)

I read the Wikipedia article prior, and took certain elements out of it while putting my own spin on the others. You are probably right though that I took it too far (the chicken was supposed to be more mechanical at first, as in that it was her house that she could enter, she just happens to sit on top of it and it moves) It probably ended up too organic in the end, I'll see what can i do about it.

Thx! So, if I'd give her grey hair and lower her boobs to her waist it's cool? ;)
I deliberately made her younger and without the mortar and pestle, but maybe it indeed loses it's touch with the brief a little this way

EDIT: Good idea, I gave her some straw-ish white/grey hair, and now she looks like on old insane tart a bit more already :D

Joey-b, thanks for the tips. I'll work in those points.
I'm trying to see if I can turn it into something, I don't want to go into detailing something that doesn't work. The concept seems flawed from the start. Perhaps I'll have to do another one from scratch.

wow this week's chow really turned out amazing stuff so far!

CCThrom: that's one hell of a cool tool belt in the second pic lol it does look better than the first one too

WingedChime: maybe add some house elements over the bird, like chimneys and bricks? very cute witch

Nutter: good start!

Ionic: much better colors, keep going :cheerleader:

Tommoy: great design! liking everything about it

Wiggers: yours is definitely a fav :D i like how you kept a folklore illustrative feel to your image while staying true to the traditional descriptions of her, and chicken house in the background too. great work!

I'm abit short of time this weekend but i don't want to miss a chow, so i hope to finish this simple piece soon. Any critiques/suggestions welcome, i think one leg is too short and i just noticed it now when posting.

so I decided to go back a little bit and actually churn out the witch design first before I move onto my final sketch..its just more helpful to know the form and the clothing before I do the actual pose....

also made the rock mortar creature sitting instead of standing..

I'm hoping to get the final sketch done tonight...
