Okay, first of all. This is probably never going to look anywhere near as perfect as what other people are making. But anyhow I thought I should give this thing a try.
So, this is my initial sketch of what I had in mind, crit away.

Too many great ones to comment on them all… This is shaping up as a killer round!
Matt Dixon – Awesome as usual… my 2 cents, the dark image with luminous figure is more creepy.
Wiggers – The face is awesome and I like the “full illustration” vibe you’ve got here. The only suggestion I’ve got is her hair might want to be a bit more opaque, give it some volume.
Stoat – Another great face, I hope you get to finish that!
Fersteger – Good to see you around… nice start, very “D’aulaire Troll” feel.
Dan! – I like the soft-touch rendering.
Ionic – Great work sequence… You’ve practically got a conceptart tutorial there!
Sony – You’ve got some good ideas there, I like the mortar with feet (reminds me of Terry Pratchett’s Luggage) and I juuust noticed the Playstation, nice touch.
Poshspice – LOVE the Rackham vibe!
AsurA – I hope you come back with finals!
Sekino – Another nice Rackham (or Biblin!) vibe…
Boyo – Great work! (and welcome)
Adam Schumpert – Really good action
Tommoy – Me likes very much… the chicken feathers are a nice touch (and well rendered)
Dwinbotp – She is really scary! The hair is incredible. Are you going to put any more detail into the pestle?
Deadred – Thanks for the comment, you’ve got a good start. One thing I’m wondering… there might be something off with her right hip joint (under the skull) is it too far to the side?
Dan liimatta – Nice! Very stylish

Hey everyone there are sooo many good entries !
Dan liimatta : This is reallyy nice, nice compo, and love the colors! can wait to see it finished!
LEEBLEEB : Nice start :)
Deadred : Nice and sexy pose :P
Lennon : I really like her clothes, but would have liked to see her face a little.
Pixelturner : Wuu scarryy :) It's nice but I think her legs are a bit to big.
CCThrom : Love it :) can wait to see it with colors, just one thing you should maybe add more space on the left and right.
dwinbotp: Scary ! really nice but her shoulders looks a bit to large, and her left arm is a bit weird.
Tommoy : Like the concept, and the colors :)
Ionic : Killer stuff !
Sorry haven't got time for the others but so many awesome entries, I'll try to do comments for everyone after the votes.
And here's my progress so far, I need to finish her mortar and work more on the colors, comments and critics are welcomed !

This is turning out to be quite an awesome chow. I'm loving everyone's work so far :)
At the moment I feel like I am barely pecking away at this one. :frustrated: I like the where whole piece is going at the moment but, I'm not sure that I will have time to complete everything. So even though I think the chicken house joining the chase is one of the more interesting ideas I've had in this one I think I'm going to need to put it aside to finish up the tighter composition of Baba and her prey.
Anyway here's the update. Doesn't look to different at this time which is kind of frustrating but ahh well...

Marcusthebarbarian the spacing issue isn't applicable right now... those pencil lines are going on top of an already-painted background, but I will probably still take your advice and scale her down just a touch relative to that background.
Adam Schumpert that is a VERY ambitious composition! Props to you, and I hope you have enough time to work it out.
Inkfish nice creepy face there... and good color rendering.

so I decided to go back a little bit and actually churn out the witch design first before I move onto my final sketch..its just more helpful to know the form and the clothing before I do the actual pose...
I love your Baba Yaga... I want to hug her, she is so cute. Which is probably not your goal, but I'm a little twisted on my view of cuteness... so don't worry about it. LOL!
The creepy eyes in the hair are a nice touch... :D

Thanks for all who gave constructive advice, I appreciate them a lot:D Speaking of advice, I have to call this done, unless of course there's room more for improvement, before I added more detail work on this piece, I asked my girlfriend to take a look and I wanted to know if it was better with the deep dark eyes or should I add the whites to them? She stood still for a few seconds with a disgusted look on her face, rushed out of my workplace and told me she would not stay in the same room with me as long as I'm working on Baba, SHEEESH! and SHE's the horror flick fan...enough banter, here's my Baba.

Adam Schumpert- Ok Your's is my fav so far, i just like the feal. It almost tells the story of to kids stumbeling across this strainge house, getting too close, Baba Yaga smells them and comes screaming out of the house, as it too, starts chaising.
dwinbotp- I cant even say... thats just..... words.... really amaizing!

IanLlanas - Great work on the composition, especially the children. You definitely get a sense of a dreadful moment.
Adam Schympert -That is going to rock when it's done. I love what you did with the kids and how they are chased by not only Baba but her house as well.
masque - I like the look of this. Seems like a tradtional children's book design.
artina - Nice design, especially the carvings on the mortar.
Stoat - Very cool. Haha! I think she'd be better off making soup seing as she doesn't seem to have any teeth.
Ionic - Very nice work. She looks more like she's ready to kick ass than chase after helpless kids though.
Sulk-Sal - Interesting design choice on her head gear. However, I would've used more reference from real animal skulls.
FerrousJack - Good idea with the demonized troll design.
Wiggers - Loving the heads! Nice work.
Tommoy - Very, very nice design!
CCThrom - Coool!
Vorace - Woah! Nice rendering going on but the design reminds me a little too much of something out of the LOTR movies.
Teundeboer - Hm..at first glance, it looks like she is trying to save herself and the fat kid from falling. Don't know I this is what you're going going for. Other than that, you need to work more on design and detail. Banzai!
dwinbotp - Wow! Now that is a badass witch. I can definitely sense a Clive Barker vibe here. Mucho nice!
D@niel - Very nice flow and sense of speed here. The colors are great, but I think the face looks too manly.
WunderDark - Don't give up. You've come this far and it's looking good. I'd work more on the face and the victim's foot. Right now the face looks sad and not very exciting. Try to give her a crazier, menacing look. The outer side of the foot needs to be straightened out. Google feet and focus on that part and you'll see what I mean.
Senpen - Those are some crazy looking legs. Good job!
Alright I'm beat. I wish I had the strength to give everyone a comment but I need to post my own stuff too. :P I'm a bit late into the game but I just couldn't resist this opportunity - what an awesome theme. I hope I can get enough work into this before the deadline. Tell me what you think! :D

Wow guys, you're really pumping out some good stuff.
I haven't progressed as far as I'd like this week. I've been Job Hunting. That's got to be one of the most time consuming affairs that produces the least amount of results.
Anyway, I might scrap this and try a more Russian traditional look, and looking at all these scary looking Baba's, I might try something scarier too.

February 12th, 2009, 04:57 PM
Thanks for the crit Christoffer! I usually find a piece of reference I like and work off only that (mostly) when getting more would help. I see also I didn't follow it as closely as I should have. That's something I'll work on for the next piece.
And my..."shading" needs something else too. It's shortcomings were really highlighted here. Perhaps using up a sheet of charcoal, scanning it, and placing it on the lineart instead of just doing the pencil thing on paper would be better? Hmm...
The background will also be much darker.

Thx! So, if I'd give her grey hair and lower her boobs to her waist it's cool? ;)
I deliberately made her younger and without the mortar and pestle, but maybe it indeed loses it's touch with the brief a little this way

i'm really liking the different take on the scale on this one fersteger. gonna be another good one!
John Bridges, i like yours a lot as well, one thing you could look at is the way her right foot is resting on the rim of the mortar. it would add quite a bit of character to the pose if the base of her foot and her toes would push against the inside of the mortar rim for example...just a detail though ;)
NateShaw
February 12th, 2009, 07:05 PM
fersteger I agree with jpedro, the scale is cool and made so much better by the way you cropped her on the sides, like she is too big to even fit in the picture.

There's a lot of amazing concepts in the this Thread. wow:sungod:
As for my attempt. It's been a bit slow. Not much time to spend and not too sure what I'm doing when it comes to painting. Just going to try and see how far I get with this first attempt at anything detailed with a tablet. I didn't spend any time on concept but I think this might develop into something hopefully.
Spending a lot of time on this one experimenting with painting techniques.
It's still very rough.

Your sketch had a really beautiful circular movement, a bit like a warp. In your color version, it kinda lost it.

Your pencil work is very detailed and creepy, it's losing it with the color. Maybe brighter colors for the line work will be more visible?

The close up is much more interesting then the standing figure, looks more mysterious, especially with the games of focus (it looks like the skeleton and her surroundings are not in focus bot the face are).

Firstly, nice drawing man:) Personally I think it would be cool to perhaps make it at night instead, and have the the girl holding a candle. It would make for an interesting light source and it would look really cool and creepy having baba's hands and part of her face encroaching on the small "capsule" of light
Up lights are also always scary :)

I’m not going to even begin commenting on all the images here, but a few observations from a quick scan of the last page (so I am going to begin really!) In reverse order...
Trevor – You should finish if you have the time. This is looking top!
Daniel – Geat work! Has a bit of a Phil Hale vibe to it. If I have a crit, it’s the arm holding the staff (mortar?). It doesn’t quite look like it’s going backward to hold it behind her. The foreshortening seems a bit lacking. But this is a small crit of a wonderful pic! :)
Tommoy – Great image! Baba’s smashing, and very bird like. She’s very high contrast and the girl isn’t. There’s a little bit of a clash where her claw touches the chin and you realise how apparent this is, but it’s probably intentional.
Christoffer – I really like the traditional approach in costume design. The eastern European feel is very self evident. Be careful with referencing a realistic person in an image where the dominant character is less so. This is going to be very spooky! (And what Daniel says!)
Benu – She’s hideous! In a good way. Face is smashing and I enjoy the design of the legs on the ‘pestle’. Perhaps think about a portrait composition instead of landscape, unless you have plans for the sides of her.
Doomstagg – I quite like the third one, but you’re right there are more interesting possibilities with the middle one. Looking forward to where this goes!
Artofinca – Excellent drawing! Love the hut. Watch out you don’t lose too much detail in the transference to the textured background. Have you tried her with a pupil looking at the viewer?
MrAnimation – Interesting idea having her perched on the side of the pestle rather than in it. I guess the background looks a little rushed and arbitrary, and Baba doesn’t ‘pop’ out of it! Well she does a bit, but the pestle just blends in. You could perhaps give a bit more volume to it by rendering a bit more form and getting rid of that black shadow round the edge. :)
Cubesoflard – Very scary! The head-dress of skulls is a fab idea. I know it’s not finished yet but I reckon you could do a lot with moody lighting off the candle on the face...
Blackrobin – Excellent sketch. She’s a great looking demon, however I think she needs aging a bit. The off the shoulder number and her general demeanour appear younger than Baba is generally thought of. Your brush marks are full of energy and immediacy and that gives it a real spontaneity.
Sulk-Sal – Your more graphic approach is refreshing. Love the head-dress. She has a bit of a NA native Indian feel. I’m not sure yet about how the characters are going to integrate with the background yet. I’ll see where you go with it.

I thought I'd post some comments on a few form the last couple pages.. :)
masque: Id run from that witch too. :) Nice colours in your shading. I like that old style.
WunderDark: I like how you've changed the scene.. it's much more creepy and tells a bit of a story I find. Doesn't look like that kid knows whats going to happen.. lol
D@niel: Great movement and style in your work.. Although i liked the right arm placement better before. I thought you just need to turn her hand around and the arm would have looked fine.
Christoffer: I agree with Daniel having a candle light source from below would really make that scene scary.
trevor: I like the form and your idea of having the horseman as part of her in some way.
Tommoy: Great character concept! I can almost her what kind of sounds she would be making. Does remind me of the dark crystal a bit. :)
benu: Nice approach in making baba a full bird like creature.
Doomstagg: I like your idea of having the dogs as her servants. Each being different.
Artofinca: I love your concept.
MrAnimation: Nice, thats one serious mortar and pestle. ;)
Cubesoflard: The lighting is nice. I like her head and back piece.
blackrobin.. I like the colours your using.
Sulk-sal. Great head piece.
Sung-jae Kim: I like the expression on her face. A little different angle than others.. I'd like to see some more of the props and clothing your going to add with her.
Ionic. Great scene.. That expression on her face is amazing..
Venger: I enjoy your mood you've greated with your texture and colours.. great concept drawing also.
Back to work.. no more time.. ;)

Yeah D@niel, what trevor said about the elbow area, and if you put the wraps on her arm in more perspective that would fix the original pic. But I like this new pose way better, she holding her thing with her head, and the placement of the arm is way more dynamic now I think, and she looks crazier hah

You know you've spent too much time working on an image, when you dream about Baba Yaga huts! That asides, here are few of my thoughts on some of the images.
Antne- I really like what you did with the lines in the sketches. I just love that second sepia colored one- to me it's the strongest of the 4 wips. The rendered version looks great as well, but it looses a lot of details and textures that you created with your brush strokes earlier. (and somehow the lighting feels stronger on the sepia one as well) All in all I do like your image a lot.
Blackrobin: That looks great so far, I love color choices, and the design of the mortar.
Benu: This is probably not what you'd like to hear, but I like the prior version better. I felt there was more focus on the character, and I really liked the background colors. It appears you had reflective lighting on her skin coming from the green sky below, and that was a nice and subtle touch. The black shadows in the newer version of the image are a bit overpowering in my opinion.
On the positive note, I love her birdlike figure, the design of the mortar and the feathers. Her face is great as well ( I like her nose a lot and those things that hang off her cheeks), and you created great sense of motion. I hope this is at least a bit helpful to you, and that I haven't offended you :)
Jeremy Hoffman: I really like your whimsical style and the composition!

it's not that spooky, or evil, not too nightmare like or bizarre either, it's rather grey to some extent,.. it's like the real thing, if you would ever encounter it.. and that gives the whole piece a nice subtle creepy accent.

Poshspice - Thanks! I'm still playing with how to do backgrounds just because I'll drive myself insane if I try to draw a tree, never mind a whole forest, and this forces me to think about the general shapes rather then each individual tree leaf.

AsurA: I really like the details in yours and the lack of color doesn't bother me. What I see though is that since the right side is more chromatic it comes forward more but its the background so it flattens the image in a way I suspect you weren't intending. Maybe if you flipped the gradient it might solve this. Otherwise it looks good and I like that little cat.

Adam Hunter Peck: I love the personality that you've put into this one. Really a standout piece.
Here's where I'm at on mine, I still have no idea if this pic started out from a good idea. If it crashes and burns, I won't feel bad about it. I just really want to break out of the vicious cycle of heavily rendered character portraits. Currently it has devolved into 25 layers of color washes, adjustment layers and filters over a doodle.

Openanewworld - really liking all the images. I'm leaning towards B or C. They're both a different approach and they cast Baba Yaga in a good light.
Bugmeyer - I'm really liking it.
Here's a start of the colors. I'm trying a slightly different approach.
Only thing, when I came up with the idea, I was going to have her Pestle and scarf as bright compared to the halfway made coat. I didn't take into consideration that I was going for a dead winter look.
Is it too glaring and tacky now?

Update on my Baba Yaga. I think I'll keep it in b&w again, since trying to pull of both IDW and ChOW proved to be quite much for just a week. Having tons of fun though, and I think I'll work some more on expanding this even after the deadline.

Oh and I included my hut in it too, in the hope it'll encourage people to enter IDW too :D I've seen quite a couple of interesting mortar designs in here that I haven't seen in the IDW thread yet, so I'd encourage everyone to post them in there as well (as long as you show the mortar/pestle design enough in your rendering I'm fine with it, though I'd prefer seperate renders of them if possible).

Hey guys, Quick Announcement!
As you may have noticed, Oregano decided to phase himself out of Chow in early December. He isn't gone forever, he just needs a break from this place for a while. I've been running it by myself for the last few months, but boy, you guys sure aren't making it easy! The last few weeks Chow has been ridiculously popular. :]
So, I'm enlisting a small amount of official help, from someone you know very well.
Poshspice has agreed to help me out around Chow.
I will still be doing most of it, but Posh will be helping me with doing the selection for poll, as well as helping me reply to PMs and the like (I'm starting to not be able to reply to all of them).
So please say Thank You to Posh for agreeing to help out, and treat him well! :]
THIS ALSO MEANS ALL DEADLINES ARE PUSHED TO MONDAY AT 4:00 pm, [GMT -5/Eastern Standard]

Daestwen & Poshspice,
Thank you both very much for all the work that goes into putting CHOW together!
It’s such a treat to be able to see and share everyone’s different creative processes.
The weekly challenges have been a great learning experience for myself,
and I am sure that is has been for others as well.
I really feel lucky to be able to participate in such a helpful, talented, and inspiring community.
Its really great to see it becoming so popular (more artist = more possiblities to learn, greater need to push yourself to do your best work and all that :) )
Thank you so much for the work you do to help make that possible.
This has been an amazing round imo and it’s produced some awesome works good luck to everyone. :teeth:
Take care,
