View Full Version : Application Corrupt or Something

When I started Corel Painter this morning, it quit after displaying the splash screen for a few seconds. I tried relaunching the app several times, but it kept quitting unexpectedly after loading for a bit. I tried restarting the computer but that was about all I could think of. I finally had to delete all the preference files, which worked, but I had to spend some time tweaking the settings, organizing brush palettes etc. to how they were.

And then it happened again, so again I had to adjust all the preferences and get Painter back to how it was before >:|

I noticed that what seems to be causing the crash is when I load my custom made brushes. i.e. Everything works fine until I load the brushes that I've made. So I made a copy of the preference files, to keep just in case it crashes. If the app gets bugged I can just use the backup prefs folder to fix it.

The only problem is I can't seem to install my custom brushes without crashing the app. It's really weird because it seems like it just broke without any reason whatsoever. Those brushes haven't caused any problems until now. I'm hoping someone might have a solution.

Thanks,
Chris

Sounds like if it's the brush, then it's possible one of the xml files for the custom brush is causing the crash. Sometimes when it goes out of some weird data range it crashes.

One thing I could suggest is when you launch painter, if you're in XP go to Window - Show Brush Tracker and clear all. Then try running your custom brushes.

The only other thing I can think of is seeing which xml file was last modified before the crash in your custom brushes and that may be the culprit, you may have to kill the brush (the xml file for it and jpg) or the entire set of brushes so make a backup before picking them apart.

The other thing you can also do, is instead of putting the Brush set in the regular brush category, create another subdirectory where your \Application Data\Corel\User Workspace\Brushes category is, and put your brush set in like a folder "Custom Brushes" Then when you launch painter you can have it Load that specific Brush Library.

That suggestion is so you're not loading too many brushes on top of the current ones (in case the culprit is stability)

If it crashes out again and you haven't done so, as you said you saved your preferences file/workspace, then do a factory restore on Painter hitting the "Shift" as you launch it.

But if the brushes are giving you problems now, like I said it may be a corrupted xml file and try looking to see which one was last modified.

Thanks a lot for your help, I've yet to try all this but it's useful information nonetheless. Thanks!
