Woohoo.. thanks everyone for your patience and we hope you enjoy it!!

This four-part series covers the process and working methods Kemp uses for designing science-fiction vehicles for the games and entertainment industry.

In part 1, Kemp utilizes a typical job sheet to assess the goals and needs of a client. Once he has his general direction he begins creating thumbnail sketches in Photoshop to begin the design process. Working in a side-view, plans are drawn up to work out issues of proportion and engineering.

Part 2 begins with Kemp choosing the three best thumbnails and taking them into Google Sketchup. The rough models are made and then Kemp takes these into Photoshop to add mood, lighting, and texture.

Parts 3 and 4 refine the processes above to further develop a single design. The Sketchup model is finalized and then Kemp returns to Photoshop to create a deliverable ortho and final illustration for a client.

The whole series provides a beautiful example of the way in which artists (and their clients) can use the iterative process to refine a rough idea into a fully developed asset. Kemp’s candid narrative reveals a great depth of experience in areas of design, approach, client relations, and more.

Downloaded it yesterday. Seriously cool final.

Hat's off to Kemp and MB. 3D might not ne everybody's cup of tea, but from a full production pipeline point of view this series is the best that MB has done IMHO.

Ok, I finally had some time to go through the video. It's a great end to the series with a lot of illustration tips shared. But the highlight has to be the end sequence which sets a new bar on Massive Black hilarity.

I honestly can't believe this came out. I had convinced myself it just wasn't going to ever happen.

Kemp? How do you spell government? ;)

40 layers (or more) in that photoshop file (the intergovernmetal vihecle). Heavy file. I try to avoid creating that much layer. also too confusing. Bad idea?

Doesn't matter imo. If you get confused - sort the layers in groups. If you have to hand over the files, name your layers correctly or merge them.

This is really amazing stuff-- the amount of instruction packed into these vids is priceless. Thanks Kemp (/steak) and Jason for the knowledge, I'm a MB download customer for life (but make the composition dl happen! :) )

Terra_Jamez: Yea I think Sascha Thau summed up my opinion on it. I try and keep the layers and file efficient but not at the cost of progress. Sometimes when you're finishing an image you just have to tweak a lot of little stuff. I thought about flattening some of it in the download but that would be dishonest about the process. I actually am trying to cut down on the layers. lol like it's tobacco or something..

There's some crazy replies in here. Thank you everyone who enjoyed the videos and spent their hard-earned currency on them. I'm makin' more I promise.

ManaBurn: I take care of biznas. You should do something about your downloads addiction, u need a fix!

That's nice of you to say Too Many Captains...

I noticed in the images he's using Sketchup Pro. Do I need the pro version's features to do what he's showing, or is the standard version going to work? I just downloaded the standard version to check it out and it seems pretty sparse, but the product description doesn't actually specify, so I thought I'd ask. I've never worked in 3d, (except a little Raydream way back when in college), but I'd like to build a basic knowledge of how do do some things.

The only difference between the pro and free versions is the ability to export the geometry into different file types and the Layout utility.

Good deal. Thanks for the info. Looks like I'm going to have to upgrade my system before I jump into this though. Anything more complicated than, say, a cube, and it get's all jumpy. Ah, well. Soon...

Thanks again.

Can't thank you enough Kemp! Watched all 4 vids, learned a ton, and did my own vehicle concepts from what I learned...and it's the best piece in my portfolio. It got me 2 art tests so far. Really looking forward to the 4th week of Discovery to see if you have any more tasty morsels for us to chew on.
