View Full Version : Please support the ConceptArt.Org Downloads so we can keep the site free.

Jason Manley

ConceptArt.Org is in the middle of a big bump in costs due to the amount of bandwidth we are transferring...thousands of gigabytes per month right now of data transfer as well as maintenance and tech upgrades.

Please support the downloads. The proceeds to CA go to funding this site and it is the easiest way to help if you feel like this place has done anything for you or your art at all.

media.massiveblack.com has the info.

Super thanks to those who have been getting the downloads. It is what enables us to keep moving forward and keeping up with costs. We do need to raise funds over the year and supporting the site with learning is the best way to help.

Thanks for reading.

Whatever happened to the Dan Dos Santos vid? Wasn't that supposed to have come out a month or so ago? I can't wait for it. :)

Oh, and thanks for all the effort y'all put into these things. I love buying them and learning from them. Given the price of schooling or private lessons, these downloads are a steal.

You should advertise them more. I already purchased 2 (well, technically three--one video was two parts). The videos are worth it and are extremely affordable. Have you considered other alternate forms of income, like a premium online or paper magazine? They offer something similar for a medical organization for people with a condition most of those patients have no support for. That's how they cover a lot of the website costs as well as continue to fund the research and studies in. Doesn't have to be too expensive. Sounds like you need big donors...

Wow those videos look great. I didn't even know they existed! I'll definitely buy at least a video or two. I think I'm going to start with the perspective series. Thank you! :D

Just pick a few and buy em. It's the best way to spend fifteen bucks I can think of.

And don't miss the Whit Brachna "Masks Demo" for $5....What a deal!

If you don't do it for CA do it for yourself.

lol

maybe i could go on a huge ban hammer hoe down. Could make a whole day of it. the purge of 2009.

registering has little to do with it...its the traffic and technology that is expensive. maintenance is also of cost. so...thanks to those who are actually supporting the site instead of just using it.

How is CGNetworks funded? Can we copy the same system here?

Jason, thanks to you guys for producing these in the first place, they're worth way more than what you guys charge.

Is there a way to have one picture on the server, but have multiple threads reference it, instead of two or more, or however many duplicates attached to different threads (critique center for instance)? Would that save on bandwidth/storage costs? Short of outside hosting and linking, I'm not sure how to post a final in EOW, get feedback in critique center, and sketchbook, without uploading 3 duplicate files. I've bought a lot of the downloads, and I plan to buy more, but I also want to do what I can when utilizing the site on a daily basis.

Im just getting ready to move into a new place and start looking for work in London. So its a bad time for me really, and i dont think i can convince my girlfriend that i should be allowed to buy downloads when most (90%) of our rent is gonna be payed by her (until i get a job). Hopefully i will find work soon though, and when i do, ill be straight onto Whits speed painting and Carls perspective!
I did buy Whits snowy environment downloads a while back tho, and Marko's character ideation when that first came out. Trying to do my bit, just having to fend off the taxman with one hand, and dish out demoreels with the other at the mo. But i salute you guys for your efforts here and i love this place. Ill do more as soon as i can.

I don't think I like this attitude. There is no better way to support this site than to continue to use it to learn and grow as an artist and to help others do the same.

That being said, the videos are great. I've learned some simple but valuable bits of information from them.

But thats not what he means by support. We're talking physical support here. I know Manley is appreciative for all those who actually contribute to the site by visiting the critique center regularly, constantly post new work and help others out as that is the whole point of why he created the site.

The reality of such a thing existing is that it needs money to maintain and expand. Instead of simply asking for donations he will provide you with something very valuable in return for giving money. He's not saying that anyone who doesn't buy downloads or DVDs are moochers, he's just taking time to thank those who have already supported the site by purchasing something.

There are plenty of modifcations to the forum that could be made to reduce the bandwidth needed per page

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29446

offsite avatars and less posts per page would help a lot
people revisiting threads they have posted in that are long with loads of images attached are getting them all loading again and just scrolling past them
not to mention you have to wait for them to load as the page keeps changing in length as they load one by one scrolling you back up the page from the post you are trying to read

the default is currently set to 30 posts which imo is kinda big

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions if users go here, scroll down and you can set the number of posts per page to something smaller. I imagine everyone going down to 10 posts would cut down a chunk. Not sure what effect this will have on total page loads though, but for the sketchbook section for instance it should help out.

You can also turn off avatars and sigs etc here should you so wish

Taking away features or turning off stuff is not acceptable...nor is hosting images elsewhere. we lose the integrity of the community as soon as people delete stuff off their servers.

all I am asking is for those of you who enjoy the site that have not supported the downloads to do so. That's it.

Big thanks to those who do.

I have downloaded a few and I want to buy more soon. The sad thing is, that even though these are insanely good value for your money, I still have rent and stuff to think about. The ones I have downloaded, and the DVDs I have bought have been really great, and a bargain at that price, so I too encourage people to buy them, it's not expensive and you learn a ton. I'm looking forward to more downloads and DVDs dealing with traditional media and illustration. I enjoyed the Greg Manchess one tremendously, and I'm really looking forward to Dan's DVD.

On a practical note, if I wanted to have both a DVD an a t-shirt, would I have to pay separate shipping costs?

EDIT: and I totally agree with what stoph says about attachments in the post below!

stoph
February 7th, 2009, 04:25 PM
i like the suggestion of being able to upload once (via attachment manager) and use that same attachment tag in multiple threads. i've had instances where i've not only had to re-upload an image just to use in a different thread, but you also have to go through the copyright dialogue each time (which is awesome and necessary, but can be tedious, esp if you've done it once or twice already for that image..)

once income steadies for me, ive got my eye on at least another 2 vids. keep it up, guys! :yayca:

Greg Manchess Timberline is dowloading as I type this. Looking forward to picking up part 2 during the week. Thank you to Jason and Management for creating this place. It's a great resource on a lot of fronts.

Edit: That Part one closes with Mr. Manchess drawing comparisons between Artisits and Ninjas was unexpected. I guess when you win 20 in the show, though, people will call you colorfull. Anyway, really nice vid, listened to it twice while working on my own stuff. Thanks again to CA for making this stuff available and I look forward to part two on payday.

Question:
No matter how hard I try, I can't find the downloads page. It seems to all run on the forum section now.. It was quite nice to see them all together like that.

I have the funds for some extra things now, and I'll definitely pick up some downloads.

not to mention you have to wait for them to load as the page keeps changing in length as they load one by one scrolling you back up the page from the post you are trying to read

It is possible to stop the page from loading. Press the 'Esc' key or the red 'X' in your browser window, and scroll to the bottom for what you want to see. If you want to see something like an update to a sketchbook, and you only want to see the update, stop the page from loading; scroll to the bottom and View Single Post; i.e. click on the number on the right side.
