Swarming, as they do.
So the other day I decided to do a bit of redesign of the current SC2 infestor (http://www.starcraft2.com/art.xml?s=93), and was nicely happy with the results, so I want to just go through the entire race and do a pinup of each of the units (both original and new ones, probably)...
It's not necessarily an exercise in originality, but the two I've done so far have felt like very good practice so far and I'm quite enthusiastic about it so that's what matters...

So, So far, the Zergling and the aforementioned infestor... Zergling's very close to the current model, since I rather like the way they look in the current build.

I love them !!! it' s pretty hard I think to create creepy agressives deformed creatures , to create the harmony between shapes, colors , etc ... and you did it !!

Ah mr.jack you've astounded us yet again. Love em there great. Very interesting colour choices, they work very well. Would you ever consider mentoring people sometime? :)
Keep it up!

very very good! nice work's!

Mr--Jack
February 6th, 2009, 10:02 PM
First of all I will point out since I didn't in the first post; in case anyone doesn't know these are all units from Starcraft, and I'm drawing them with varying levels of faithfulness to their original designs (depending on how much I like them...).

Thujon Thanks indeed! And . . . you've got a point there (and I'll admit my enviro skills could do with some practice) but for the moment they're gonna be straight pinups; easier to focus on form and texture without having to worry about fancy lighting and extra background stuff, not to mention action and whatnot.

BiFFF; Thanks! Well mostly the rest of them are going to be pretty faithful to the current art (or somewhere in between the two for units that are in both games), I don't think there's much that I'm not happy with really. So it makes it easier at least having refs to work from; though I was very happy with the infestor, so I might do some tweaking here and there. (And in the case of units that were only in original SC I mightn't have much choice since they're not exactly easy to work out: thinking lurker here at the moment—I don't really like the current SC2 model, and the big render that was released with brood war looks just too much like a hydralisk with more legs, but the in-game original unit's awesome so....

Me, Myself & Me again; thanks! And... Ah, I don't know; I don't think I'm at a point just yet where I could do so with much confidence, and as far as time-management goes . . . not so crash-hot there. :P

Lord Dubu hehe. Indeed.

Duman :D hehe, yeah, I'll admit it's not such a surprise me doing this... and here's a link (http://Mr--Jack.deviantart.com/art/Ultralisk-79157867) to't

Dolgopolov Thankyou.

Also, for some comparison, here's a zergling (http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs24/f/2008/028/e/c/zergling_by_Mr__Jack.jpg) I did just over a year ago... So I can pretty confidently say I'm pretty happy with my improvement since then...

So the next one, the new Baneling.
Took me a while to work out how to go about the green sacs but I'm pretty happy with it again.

HunterKiller_; thanks!

MaxChallie; hehe. Crispy indeed! Thankye.

Sublimus; thanks!

epicnoses :D good to hear.

ColorExcursion; such a perfect zerg unit, after all, the zergling... Second only to the Hydralisk, methinks...

Me,Myself & Me again :D well shall do; in the meantime—thanks!

ColumbusSage; thankyou

JisRed; always glad to hear it.

sourgasm :D thankye.

pepps; Thankyou indeed. It's been (and continues to be) a lot of fun!

Noplz; thankyou.

So, next in line—the Roach.
Hardy little bugger, difficult to kill if you don't do enough damage to kill it outright... (pretty sure with its regen-rate it's physically impossible for a zealot to kill one of these 1 on 1).
So nice and scarred and all, this time. (not that the others aren't, but still.)

Crits and all that encouraged!

Duman
February 9th, 2009, 09:12 AM
Neat, really liking their designs. Their poses are also top notch. Where are you getting the info on all these guys? I have checked the starcraft website a few times, but saying that they update slowly is an understatement.
(almost as slow as they develop games, ha)
Keep up the sweet pics.
I would love to see the whole starcraft cannon be painted up by you.

Super sweet! I would suggest that after you get done with the zerg, move onto the protoss and/or terran :D This could be a major step for you hehe (Possibly land you a job?)

Or at least that would be hoping eh? :)

Keep going... I'm saving them all as they look super sweet!

Mr--Jack
February 10th, 2009, 04:49 PM
Duman; slow? hehe . . . yeah . . . there's info of all sorts (all small mostly though) leaking out relatively regularly but the official website's been pretty quiet for quite some time...

psychoboy; cheers! And there'll be an infested Terran at some point so there'll be at least one vaguely humanoid creature, though it will be in (some) armour...

Lotet; thanks! :D

Matte_Art; hehe. Perhaps :D (on both counts)
Not sure about the other races, might be itching for something a little more original by then . . .

So nothing new just yet but I'm putting the linework up in my sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=122981&page=5) if anyone's interested.

ayaoyoyo; hehe, you might be waiting a while. We'll see!

So, update...
I realised I'd forgotten the backbone of the zerg hive—the drones and larvae!

So before I get any further up the tech tree here they are...
It's fun making such mundane units cool, methinks. . .

Enjoy, as usual!
There's also a step-by-step of the larvae up here (http://Mr--Jack.deviantart.com/art/Larvae-progress-112619933) if anyone's interested...

KevinP; ahoy! Thanks indeed, and yeah, 'twas fun indeed! (I'm not sure if you tried or not but it turns out the email address on the card I gave you didn't actually exist so apologies there) :D

Dahami; I'm glad to hear it. (even in death ;))

So, without further ado, the Hydralisk! The most complicated and time-consuming so far, and I've a feeling they're not going to get any simpler, but still. All fun, and the motivation isn't falling away yet so . . . . :D
Thanks for the support, and enjoy!

phoenicorn; Cheers! and I'm glad to hear it. . . hehe.

Hunter_Killer; thanks! I follow the updates (on the battle.net forums, the SC2 site hasn't been updated unit-wise for months) pretty closely, and the roach has been pretty much as it is (aside from cost + hp/damage tweaks) since it was first revealed.

Lotet :D thankye!

Duman hehe. Apparently concept positions open at the moment are 'senior' but as soon as I kick myself out of this hesitation I'll send off an email anyways :)
Cheers!

Alm0st; no problems! always glad to hear they're of use.
And thanks!

keith_v; thanks! Yep, I'm comfortable working with this style I've got going here...

Noplz; Cheers! I see your point; i think the little specular highlights around the centre of the chest might be a bit much, always something I've got to catch myself not to go too overboard with.

Nexus; thanks! Kerrigan's not going to be for a while (I'm thinking she's gonna be last) but the infested marine's only a couple off at the moment :D

dkounious; thanks! And I shall

MrSmith; Much appreciated :)

Eveningkiss; or an alley during the evening or while it's overcast . . . can't really think of a situation where I would like to run into one, really, now that I think about it

Line; ? Thanks!

I was a bit worried about the pose on this one, since it was looking a little odd, but once I got the shadow on the BG in it seemed to sort itself out pretty nicely; I suppose it's just a little odd looking at something with 5 legs.

So yeah, this is sort of in-between the old lurker and the new model; I don't exactly know what the original one looked like, really—the in game model was a lot bulkier and cooler looking I think than this render (http://www.blizzard.com/shared/blizz-com/images/broodwar/units/lurker/cglurkerhigh.jpg) which came out at the time BW was released, which imo looks too much like a hydra with a couple of extra legs. Not entirely a fan of the current model either, so,this is a little more original on my part than most of the others. I like to think it's still recognisable, though...

Quicker than the Hydra, maybe 5 hours.

These are beautifully gruesome renders of originally low res works. Awesome works, are those muscles from any specific type of reference or just improvised? they look right at home

Duman

Is it just me, or are these things getting even better?
I mean, these are improvements on the actual art blizzard is currently using.

Gonna have to give this thread 5 stars. Great work- although with the hydralisk specifically you had an opportunity to really highlight a bug's often smooth and otherworldly carapace and your rendering technique would have done that very nicely. You did seem to be going in that very bug-like direction of "organic machinery specifically on the scales on his underside as well as the claws and the face. The one thing I do not like about the Hydralisk is that you made the top of the head rather lumpy after the very graceful and well-formed crown that you gave him at the front of his head... instead of something you'd see on a bug-creature it feels rather "beef jerky".
This type of interpretation seems to have made it across also to the lurker but not so much so. For how good all the other forms are on the creature, this one which should be most iconic and crisp does not seem to be so.

Regardless, I love starcraft and you've definitely done justice to its art.

Lurker is great and the explody green one (forgot the name off the top of my head) has a definite "Alien queen" vibe about the front of its head which is a really neat incorporation. Really nice what you did with its green bubbles. Colors and musculature definitely show you were having a great deal of fun with these.

Mr--Jack
February 18th, 2009, 09:42 PM
Kvick; Thanks :) and no, no other references really, just working with what seems right.

Duman; well I'd hope I'm improving, after all that's the point. Thanks!

Azuma, Hironori hehe. I see your point there; I tried to make it a bit of a separate plate after the headpiece since in the pose I'd given it the head is twisted in our direction, and solid carapace doesn't bend too well I don't think... And yeah, I suppose it could've been smoother but I did at least try to keep it all symmetrical :)
Thanks!

acapulco; thanks! (and glad to hear it)

Kogaras; well hello then! And thanks :D

And now the latest, with a slight variation in texture (at least in some areas)... the Infested Terran! Always a fun unit. This one was considerably quicker than the last couple (under 3 hours as opposed to 6 or 7 for the Lurker and Hydra respectively), and the rendering's all a little rougher but I'm pretty happy with this one.

I recorded a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy84TKDIcIs) of this one, too, so . . . enjoy!
(anyone know how to directly post a youtube clip? 't'd be much simpler..)

If you couple these renderings along with some good quality original creatures/machines/environments you could have a decent spot at Blizz waiting for you some day. Even if they don't say they are hiring in Concept Art you can still apply and make yourself seem worth their while. Not sure if that's even what you want but you'd definitely be cut out for it. I prefer your drawings over Samwise/Metzen for the most part anyway.

Alright! Next one; they might be coming out more slowly now but I'm very happy with this one so hopefully that makes up for it :)
The last ground unit now! Air next, should be fun, and a bit more variety too.
But first of all, the Queen! From SC2, that is; and pretty freaking sweet she is; lots'a fancy abilities, and packs a fair punch as well. Should be a lot of fun to use.
(I will do the queen from the original game as well, when I get there).

so Enjoy!
(and ha! just realised that apparently this thread was last updated on the 11rd of march. :P)

DDDDDDDDUUUUUUUUUUDDDDDDDEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! You are so awesome that I almost hate you!!!! I have a Q for you though. I was watching your video that you posted and I was wondering, what are you doing when you are changing the color values back and forth really fast. Are you just trying to find a cool color scheame? And also I saw that you would paint in like a redish orange color in the begining and then all the sudden it was gone. Whats up with that??? Anyways, AWESOME FUCKIN ART BRO!!!!!!!

Nice work on the Zerg

Curse your incredible talent. Can you spare any of your magic pixy dust for me? I want to be talented TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Oh, and may I inquire as to what you are planning to do in total? The new zerg, the old zerg? (other races, pleaze!)
But really, am I the only one who sees obvious likeness to the tyranids from warhammer 40k? You know, the guys the zerg are based off of?
(and don't dispute that, 40k was out long before starcraft)

Great job. Thy hydralisk and the defiler are my favorits, though I like the others too. They all give me this "Zerg are nasty" feeling. ^^ I hope they can catch some of that in the game.

You have a really good feeling for the volume of things I think. I tried some Zerg bevore too but they never looked so massive, more flat.

I am looking forward for the air units.

really nice job, love your works man. did you draw Terran and Protoss? I really wanna see those kind of races that you draw...
...keep up with that great stuff. :)

Well it's been a while, pretty flat out at the moment . . . which is no bad thing.

JohnBoy.3; cheers man! So to the questions; yeah, I had the blue metal on a separate layer so I was just sliding the hue up and down to see whether it was the best colour for the armour. The red painting at the beginning is using quick-mask mode (press Q and try it, it's easier than explaining fully) to create selections.

Marlusz; thanks :D

Duman; cheers! But I'm afraid the pixie-dust doesn't hold up too well with travel... And no, you're certainly not the first person to notice...

Vaejoun; Thanks!

GRMC; Yeah I'll get there in the end, but it might take me a while... :D thanks.

So a double-billing here, Overlord and Mutalisk. Ah... Not too much else to say, sketchbook pro for the lines and photoshop for the colouring.

Enjoy!

Yes, very nice.
I hope you enjoyed your little siesta. Im sure it was murder for us...
As for the mutalisk, don't they have tongues with mouths on them? Like Alien? I could swear I saw something like that while looking at the profile picture in the game.

Excellent stuff Mr. Jack, very lovely and vibrant. A veritable feast for the eyes.

But I have a question for you, if you don't mind. How did you get the gradient in the Hydralisk at http://mr--jack.deviantart.com/art/Hydra-Progress-113069710 at stage/step 3? I can get a gradient on the outside easily enough, but when it comes to the gradient inside the line/shapes, I'm utterly confounded.
I had a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy84TKDIcIs&eurl , and the video is too fast for me to make out how you filled the gradient inside the lines of the infested terran. I have had some success by using the magic wand tool and selecting the outside of the lines successively, but I'd like to know how you do it.

Thanks - and once again, lovely work.

Edit:

I think I got how to do it now, played around with masks, white blank silhouettes, and alpha channels. But I'd still like to know how you do it, as my method isn't exactly accurate. Thanks :)

This is absolutely mindblowing. Your lines are so sketchy and jet so extremely tight. Love the way you color your works as well, keep up the good stuff! You are making my day here! :D

Awesome looking work, really like the concept to all the Zerg pieces, it's almost tempting to have a go at sculpting all of them.

Very good stuff. I saw your stuff somewhere else, and what grabbed me besides the colours was how well you describe the forms. These are messy, slimy alien insects, but they read so well. Don't understand the 4 stars. It does deserve 5, however, I would love to see you go outside your zerg comfort zone. Someone mentioned Protoss and Terran, but I wouldn't mind you stepping outside the SC universe altogether.

Anyways, thanks for some really juicy creeps!

Awesome work! The defiler is sweet. The hydralisk and ultralisk are my faves of the bunch, but they're all great. Love the zealot used for scale in the ultralisk painting.
