Don't have to keep to the Shakespearian view of her, feel free to interpret faeries how you will.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titania
------------

1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).

3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?
--------------------
SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.

Rise she does,
Into midsummer's embrace,
Clothed in night mist,
Nimbus-crown'd in living night,
Titania!
My lover, my wife, my Queen, my fate,
Come to me when Aurora
Draws her luminous veil 'cross your realm,
And we shall rejoice in day's awakening.

Here's mine. I was going for a bit of an Arthur Rackham feel, but lost my way a bit. I really wish I'd started it in pencil, but ho hum... Got rid of most of the fairies. They just confused things... And after consulting someone else with a different monitor (mines not the usual), I've brightened it a little... and got rid of the border!

Well I feel totally inferior compared to basically everyone else's entry but I'm gonna post anywho....
EDIT!! Went to bed realised that I had totally left out the connection to fairies :P.
So the premise is that the 'Fairi's were an elite division of the military pre-war, (Free-roaming airborne infiltration and reconnoissance infantry or FAIRI's for short). After the fall, the survivors grouped together and formed 'city-states' one of these was established by the 101 of the FAIRI division. The commander declared herself to be queen, Queen Titania.
I'm really tired (hence the leaving of things out :P) hopefully this explains my thought process enough, if not and there is a chance of clearing it up and me making the poll I'd love to be given the chance to clarify... please :)

Title:
Fairies are as cruel as children.
On my entry:
I wanted to portray as closely as possible what I felt fairies were like. Here's Queen Titania and Nick Bottom('s head).
In my imagination, fairies are innocent and whimsical as well as selfish, remorseless and vengeful. They're very much like children, really. In this painting, I took some liberties with the original story and character from Shakespeare's play, and wanted to create a "fairytale gone wrong" image. I tried to keep her quite childlike and innocent-looking though, and I hope I succeeded in making the painting feel little disturbing. (I've always found innocent children in horror movies/ghost stories extremely creepy and scary, and I want to put a bit of that in here.)
I recently acquired the book "FABLES: Covers by James Jean" (present from sister - best art book ever), and his work was on my mind the whole time when I was trying to create this image.
Disclaimer:
Um, I do not promote animal-cruelty? ><

Holy heck! I didn't think I was going to make it in time. I really had to rush at the end, so some parts are much more rough than I'd like, like the leaves around her neck.

Harsh with the cuts this week, sorry guys, but you have to follow the guidelines, especially in rounds like this. :/
3/4ths Rule
Wingedchime – had trouble with this one because i really like the image, but ultimately felt like there wasn't really enough of her there to make a complete design.
no wips
Christoffer (also not attached),
not attached
Tommoy, hunchback, dragon4lunch, sticmann, grenogs, cyc (also, not enough wips – the one included even isn't the same image!), Felida, dayz
not named correctly
Joey-B, Mitze, openanewworld, Wunderdark,
quality check/rough/unfinished work
jshamburger, Physical Pariah, darknight, LA-Fairy, yellowrun, Antne, NateShaw, monkeybread, IIKII, Windsrock, Lammashta, Kitten Poker, Graphuji, AhChu, Dead Clown, MJ Alcazar, Wolfentir, plissken,
Crowsrock,
Almost made it, but not quite:
skorpi, Artofinca, erinel, Sekino, pixeltuner, Franna, careless, Duq, jpedro, Amedyr, doombee, anamirela, GiantRibot, dirkvandulmen, benu, amaliax, Zilrion, Sulk-Sal, ikuru, Sorknes,
For those of you who were not included for wips, attaching, or naming, if you fix the issue you can have your image re-evaluated for inclusion to the poll. It might not happen, but it means you are getting a second chance. Your penalty would be the votes lost in the meantime.

Awsome round! :D

February 9th, 2009, 06:30 PM
absolutely amazing round... i ended up voting for almost everyone.
the general improvement on quality of pose would attribute to the new WIP rule implemented in recent months, by having their original recorded, i felt that entries have "more balls" in scraping and improving on a all front, in this round, the change of pose and composition midways or close to end helps to elevate a lot of entries from good to great and even amazing!!! (even if they dont make it to the poll!)
favourite? CIAEE's entry!!! thanks

Voted for:
Trevor - Wow!!! I love everything about this!
Poshspice - So classic :)
Ciaee - Wonderful piece! I love how simple it is.
deadred - Beautiful rendering, and I can't resist the giant bunny.
(Meant to vote for, but f'ed up and clicked 'vote' too soon - sorry!)
Nutter - Nice!
Would have voted for:
careless - I love, love, love this! Such a classic feel, and the face is beautiful! Actually one of my top picks!

daestwen: the rest of her was a plant stem, so I thought it'd fall within the 3/4 rule. I'll keep that in mind next time around though, and I'm glad that you liked the piece despite of it.
Great work to everyone who participated, I will cast my votes in a near future :)

Great round. Lots of fun watching everything develop, too.
Ciaee's is my favourite by far. It's a beautiful image and manages to capture equal flavours of innocence and malevolence very nicely. I'm afraid some that went for a darker mood lost any sense of fairy for me.
Also really liking D@niel's, Trevor's, Posh's and all the others I voted for...
It's interesting to compare the finals against the WIPs. There are a few here where I feel the first sketches are stronger than the finished works, either because the sketch has been overworked in the rendering or because effects, detailing or other 'finishing touches' are diverting attention from the character in some way. An observation rather than a crit.

My 4 choices were (I gave myself a limit of 4 votes... Because otherwise, I'd get carried away ;):
Ciaee: Truly unique approach and managed to be adorable, beautiful and creepy all at once.
Trevor: Aside from the killer skills :D I liked the interpretation of fairies as monstrous, dark creatures as opposed to cute pixies.
Matt Dixon: The colours and the layout (balanced and simple).
Marco Mazzoni: I like the totally non-human aspect. It's dark and strange yet doesn't feel evil; just totally otherworldly. Someone else mentioned the 'Pan's Labyrinth' feel already and I agree.

I voted for loads, great round, if i had to choose one it would have been Deadred.
Bluefoot, tevor, Daniel c, Ciaee, Nutter , Matt Dixon and a few other got my vote to.
On another note, My one did not go to poll, not named correctly, no matter. But i named it Mitze Titania 146 what am i missing?
Thanks Daestwen for the time you have taken to put this together.

I think Daestwen is refering to the naming format. It was supposed to be CHOW146_Mitze.jpg I believe. :)

Agreed, what a great round. One day I hope to get to you guys' level. I held myself to five, here's a little bit of who and why:
Trevor: I can't help but vote for something this crazy badass. Love the evil-regality(regalness? i dunno).
Ciaee: Love the simplicity, painting style, and creepiness! great first entry.
Vorace: Something scary about it and love the color choices. I can imagine that if I ever met this Titania on a stroll through the woods it'd be slim chances coming out alive (or at least sane!) again.
Marco Mazzoni: I can't stop staring at this. Concept of fairy queen like I've never seen, and a sweet army to boot.
Bugmeyer: Love the interesting take on it and all the little details from the wings to the webbing.
Who I almost voted for:
Masque: Seeing the way you work through your WIP was almost as good as the great dreamy final piece.
Bluefooted: The linework is to die for, this looks like straight out of a storybook. Love the dress.
Shannanigan: I'm becoming a fan of you from watching you in these CHOWs. You work so clean! But I voted for you last time so :p
Decaying Lolita: Again I can imagine running into her in the forest. You did an awesome job making her look regal without all the brouhaha.
Dwinbotp: I liked your idea of fairy from the very first WIP, but all that blue on the bottom kind of cut the painting in half for me.
Ones I would have considered to vote that didnt make it to poll:
Dirkvandulmen: I'm a sucker for fat fairy queens! I love your style, but I think in the very end you overdid all the glowy/shininess a little.
Artoficina: I loved the alienesque queen, but I would have loved to see more detail on the rest of the painting, especially the fairy down below. I couldn't understand why her shoulder and left leg were way way more detailed than everything else.
Felida: Yours told a great story! I definitely would have voted for this if there was a little more contrast, as you said more detail, and if my eye didn't get lost somewhere around the foxs' head.
Looking at these every week takes my breath away. I kind of feel like I don't deserve to post this cause I didn't participate, but I really can't help but tell you all how your entries made me feel this week :D

voted for:
Posh, i think the Rackham touch is still very much there, i just got a book with lots of his gorgeous work in it, and yours instantly reminded me of him even before you mentioned him.
Matt Dixon, love the color combo. beautifully rendered, love the brushwork.
D@niel, really cool character, i really like the gesture of the hands.
fersteger, this is my fave. Waterhouse would be proud i think. absolutely awesome!
Nutter, great face! i think the pointing hand could use a little refinement, but really love this one.
Trevor, lighting rocks! dig the composition, but because of it also almost missed the thumb...
ionic, like the pose a lot, and the wings, and the face...

Mitze: Yours says it's named "fairyqueensmall.somethingorother". If you rename it and reupload it i'll reconsider.
trevor: yeh, i resize everything to a fixed width of 300 px, so yours was so wide that it got ridiculously small. :P You you like me to recrop it a little to make Titania a little bigger? You didn't do anything wrong, it's just a nice wide image.
Wingedchime: Yeh, that's why I almost took it, but I've cut out people for less before so I didn't feel it would be fair. If you had given her arms, I probably would have taken it, but then the design wouldn't have been so good. :P It was a tough choice, so thanks for your understanding.
Felida: The images are supposed to be hosted here on the forum, not off site. I made a rather large note about it in the main thread. I am starting to absolutely insist on using the attachment editor so we stop getting holes in the poll threads a few weeks down the line :/. Especially for rounds like this, i'd like to preserve them in their entity. If you upload them with the attachment editor, I'll reconsider.

Here's some crits! Promised myself I'd do them this week.
Angel Intheuk - love the snake and headress. I'm not sure if it's just me reading it because of all the white, but in some areas it looks a little flat.
JohnGrello - Love the peaceful expression on her face. Well rendered, and way to keep your head with all the different directions we were giving you.
Dan! - beautiful image, really well rendered too. Love her wings! I think it's cool the way you covered her eyes, but it still seems like she's watching me.
Bluefooted - love how free she looks.
Nightblue - love how you positioned the feet, she flows much better this way. That far arm is just a little flat and looks a little loose on that knife she has. But, she looks really regal and elegant.
Poshspice - love the forlorn look she has. Love the different look that you had this week too.
Vorace - love the expression and her wings are awesome. Does she have three ears? Her left hand, at least on my monitor looks like it goes into the tree trunk there.
bugmeyer - love the unique design! Only crit is the bottom of her dress, the blue part, looks like it is part of the leaves instead of laying on the leaves. Or is it floating above?
Narai - love the image. For me, it's just personal taste on this one. Nothing speaks of fairy to me (and no, I've never met one). To me, she speaks more of a goddess or a demon.
Jason Strutz - I loved Tatiana's face in the close-ups and all the other details. I think what happened on your image is that she's a little ovewhelmed by everything around her. I focus more on her headress and the donkey's face than I do on her. which is sad, because I really love her design.
Decaying Lolita - I think the water looks pretty good. I'm not entirely sure, but I would think it would reflect off of her a little bit more. Good job on her design!
Shannanigan - good work on her. Like the bronze wings better than the blue. And good work on adding the Indian changeling too.
Arthemis X - love the asian vibe you went for. I felt her dress was a little rough compared to the rest of her and the butterfly fairies surrounding her.
Sentinel13 - loved your design. You managed to make her look regal but still have a wild look about her. Love the little bluebird too.
Deadred - beautiful image. Love the little bunny.
Matt Dixon - love the expression on her face. Good work.
Ok, will get the rest later.

well done everyone, lots of nice images, which always makes voting a lot more difficult, especially when knowing how much work often goes into some of these pieces.
votes went to: poshspice, trevor, kroveyn, matt dixon, ciaee, bluefooted,
my favourite this week has to be ciaee, really like this, not my usual first choice technique wise, but its such a simple and yet stunning piece :)

February 9th, 2009, 10:06 PM
thanks deastwen
if you want to crop it would be cool but it seems people have seen it i guess haha
but i never realized it was a strict 300 px wide poll
i suppose in the future i will do vertical compositions only
here is an idea, how about being a max dimm of about 700x700 or so for the poll?
that way vert and horiz comps will be seen equally, and its just as easy as doing a 300 wide by infinity batch in the ol' image processor
just a suggestion take it or leave it thanks for the hard work!

There were so many great renderings this round, I had to vote based primarily on the design of the character. A few were really original, but also well-developed.:
Dan, Nether, Dwinbot, Marco Mazzoni.
Good work all!

excellent stuff. maybe i'll make it next time. although i would like to know the reason (probably too sci-fi). I voted for:
Nutter - Nice earthen colors and beautiful composition. Also a very clear and crisp image.
Poshspice - Lovely linework and just so pleasurable to look at. makes me feel peaceful.
great work guys.

Of the New Batch:
Added to Poll: openanewworld
Not Added (quality check, etc): dragon4lunch
---
grenogs: If you go into 'Go Advanced' you'll see a little paper clip icon, that is the attachment editor, and you can upload images directly to that.
trevor: yeh, i'll fiddle around with it. The reason it's set up the way it is, is because i can just go through an action with every single image and have then all resized in about forty seconds. :P I'll fiddle around with it and maybe work something out for next week. your image has been re-cropped to fit a little better!

Great round, I'm glad I stumbled across it :)
Voted for the following;
Arthemis IX- The Asian Titania idea is very nice & sets yours apart. The costume is great, especially the moth wings.
Vorace - Very strong image, the colours are wonderful. Just a minor critique - her pose seems a little rigid, looking at your WIP, I think something closer to the original pose could have been more interesting.
Bluefooted - Beautiful work, the costume is lovely. Your style works well with this kind of stuff.
Sentinel13 - Out of the whole bunch yours looked the most Queen-like to me. Great atmosphere & use of colour.
deadred - Love the overall design, especially the wings. & I know this is *character* of the week, but, that creature thing on the right looks awesome ;)

it was really really hard to decide who to vote for, and was disappointed that GiantRibot, Franna, Mitze and Wingedchime didnt make it to the poll.. ended up limiting myself to picking a Titania design that would interest me if it was used in a movie or book cover, but i really like entries by bluefooted, Kroveyn, Marco Mazzoni, D@aniel, fersteger, dwinbotp, nightblue, Jeremy Hoffman, Bugmeyer, Poshspice, Sentinel 13, ionic/JOHNGRELLO(!), and Vorace (looks like a rogue elf from WoW lol)
my top favs:
trevor!!! :D loved your entry, from wips to finish!
Jason Strutz: hilarious, and i love your very original design on a fairy queen, it looks like her and her lover make interesting characters in a fun story.
Narai: four arms, silent hill meets fairyland, how could i resist?
revenebo: that grape scepter is an awesome touch to a hilarious scene, love it!
and i would've voted for GiantRibot and Franna too :)

I'm really sorry for bothering you, daestwen :[ Now, I attached my images and I really hope, it'll work now.

I've never participated in a CHOW. I'm not sure if I'm still on time. I saw the topic and found it amazing. If I'm not on time, I'll post it anyway, just for the sake of fun.

Damn, never voted for that many entries. This is getting ridiculous, guys.
Voted for Jason Strutz, Matt Dixon, deadred, D@niel, Ciaee, fersteger, trevor, nightblue, Sentinel13, ionic, openanewworld and dayz... :D
I'm glad I didn't vote yesterday, as I was waiting on dayz' entry to be added. Don't do that again! Your work is too awesome to be missed in the poll.
Oh and trevor, that's what I wanted to tell you in the other thread about the crop for the poll image. But as I see, deastwen did a good job on that.
Awesome work everybody, can't wait for the next poll :D

So many lovelies this week. I decided to limit myself to five votes, those being:
Sentinel13 - I think this is my favorite out of all of them. It just fits with my idea of what Titania should embody.
Masque - Just so elegant, and I loved how you matched her to the little snippet of poetry.
fersteger - The classical look is beautiful. The richness of it just says queenly.
Trevor - A very dark rendition of Titania, but suiting. She has a definite maliciousness and the rendering is awesome.
Shannanigan - I really liked the more modern rendition. Very fun, but it also captures the character well I think.
Several of the other pieces I thought were absolutely gorgeous in their own right, but since I was being very picky they didn't quite fit my idea of the Queen of Fairies for one reason or another.

Masque - Just so elegant, and I loved how you matched her to the little snippet of poetry.Gracias, Jefita! Actually Oberon's ode was composed to fit the image (I have literary pretentions ;) ), because as I was working on it, the phrase "clothed in night mist" kept nagging me, and ended up as the main visual theme for the pic. Also glad that the elegance made an impression, it was another goal: a regal grace that I thought was essential to a faerie queen.

I am so stoked I got in this one with the level of skill around :D thanks
Damn I wish I'd read that I could vote for more than one. I'm glad my vote went to Masque, even though it was tough, I was drawn to the ethereal quality and the purple shading on her body, gorgeously done there.

first off- great round all participants should be proud-
angelinthuk- I like the headdress and the snake escort - I feel she could use some more embellishment on the dress
artemisX- I really love the inspiration for this one- great colors- the right arm looks a little wonky and the bottom of the dress seems a bit tubular.
Jason strutz- bright vibrant colors- the design and composition of things makes me think of actual theater-over the top and campy
Kroevyn- Very classical feel- enjoyed the splash of color on her crown
matt dixon- one of my favorites this round- simple design executed very well- I can almost hear a voice for her.
nether- interesting take- nice use of insect parts
deadred- nice and dark-I like the tattoos/runes, I like the design on the back wall- but it feels like everything else in the scene is carrying the character and not the character.
narai- I really like this pic but I felt it didn't quite read as the character- maybe she would fit as someone different.
d@niel- great colors and setting- I like the body designs, actually I don't know why I didn't toss a vote to this one.
yoitisi- very natural design- some of the rendering could be pushed a bit on her though
Masque- love the clouds and poetic tie-in - her hands seem a bit wispy- but I think that was intentional- good job
ciaee- interesting and unexpected- nice technique- but something about the way she is carrying herself is a bit guarded and conservative for the character IMO
GrendalGrack- nice use of color- the wings on the lower half is a really cool idea
quinn Simoes- very regal, very clean. something about the ultra smooth background I think is killing this one
vorace- I like the colors-she certainly looks like a wood nymph or something, but I feel you didn't put your usual attention to detail in this one.
ferrous Jack- fun and light hearted take on the subject kudos for being different
fersteger- sooo classical and colorful I love it
revenobo- fun and different take on the character
icemoon- I like the horns and the dress- something about her right hand seems off- she also seems a bit unsure
dwinbotp- cool design but I think some of the anotomy could be checked in the legs - nice background
nutter- nice orange and grey- cool horns- very simple yet well done
marco mazzoni- interesting insect look. very original take
trevor- very well rendered but I think yours has the same problem as deadreds as the additional elements are so strong they are carrying the character and not the character- still a very cool image
jefita- nice colors- I think you could have splashed some of that hard light around a few more places
nightblue- very clean, nicely rendered- great flowers
jeremyhoffman- funny idea- nice colors
decayinglolita- you are improving more and more every week
bluefooted- very classical look- nice watercolor feel
bugmeyer- nice insect design- like the spiderwebs and composition
poshspice- looks very much like your inspiration- nice lines
sentinel13- great colors and rendering- another one i probably could have voted for
shannanigan- refreshing style-your lines are so clean and the rendering is so clean-
ionic- nice work- I liuke how shes catching the little faerie- her right arm seems distracting to me- its seems she would have more attitude if she had her hand on her hip
openanewworld- very cool and magical feel- very natural design to the character
dayz- I like the composition and colors of the piece- but I dont feel the character is as strong as some of the others
felida- very clean, bright and colorful

Can someone please crit my picture? It's clearly not popular at all, but I liked it myself. So I would like to know what's not good about it?
Icemoon, to be honest I don't think your pic is bad at all but the competion is pretty scary (heck, I've been cut out but I'm actually relieved because I knew early on I would have been dead in the water in the polls... But it was fun to draw!)
As a critique, I'd say that what stands out negatively in your image (to me) is the position (and a bit of anatomy) of the fairy. The way her feet and hands are poised, she looks out of balance, like she has to hold on to the flower stems in order not to fall. Her legs look a bit too long as well, but again it might be noticeable because of her stance.
It has many strong points however: The dress and the overall colours are absolutely lovely. I also like the graceful spiral shape of the antenna/headdress. I think it has a lot going for it as a picture. Don't feel bad about the votes :)

I promised myself I would comment on everyone's entries this time. Naturally it would turn out to be a massive round like this :P
On some of these I go more in depth than others, I hope none of you feel like I'm picking on your image. I prefer having my art ripped apart and every wrong stroke pointed out, and I believe the whole goal of these activities is to improve. I know I have a long way to go myself. :D So take me with a grain of salt.
Matt Dixon: I'm so impressed with how you can make an image that is both simple and really compelling at the same time. You add the right amount of detail without overworking and model forms with so few brush strokes. I really have to work at getting that kind of stroke economy. And the lighting is gorgeous, of course ;)
jshamburger: I liked the wip stages of your drawing and the texture of her garment in the final, as well as the little cherub like fairies, but I think you lose something with the leaves. I know what you were going for, but because the leaves are so identical and similar in tone they flatten it out.
skorpi: Her anatomy is very slender, graceful and deer-like, and the camouflage texture was executed well. The things that stand out to me are the edges - they are very soft, mostly in the environment. It makes it hard to separate the foreground elements from the background, which is especially evident with the tree right next to her. She appears to be sitting on it, but it blends in with the trunks behind her because it has the same lack of definition.
JOHNGRELLO: I loved your sketches and grayscale study from the moment you posted them. I know you've already received a lot of feedback about losing some of the charm in your final, so I won't beat that horse. :D It's still a beautiful entry. The anatomy of her extended right arm is off - it's a little long and feels disjointed, but it's the only thing I could find to nitpick.
Physicalpariah: Very dynamic lighting, and I like that you chose a swamp for her environment. Her anatomy is what's holding it back. Her head is out of proportion to her body, and her pose is awkward - but that may be because of the size and position of her head.
doombee: The silhouette of the fairy in the egg has to be my favorite part. I'm also a little creeped out by the texture of her lower half (which means you did it well :D). Her anatomy and your strokes still need some tightening up. The arm holding the egg is angled strangely, which makes it look like it's not attached to her shoulder, and we should still be able to see that shoulder peeking out from underneath her hair.
Marco Mazzoni: One of my favorite entries. The texture on this is fantastic, as is the design and execution. What I wouldn't do to have a shred of that talent. :)
Christoffer: The design of the crown and corset are lovely, but I think you could have pushed your darks more. There are also some key shadows missing that flatten it out, such as under the hand on her hip, on her forehead under her crown, the beads and wrap around her leg, and under the fabric that drapes across her thigh. The fabric is inconsistent - you can really tell at the edges. At her sleeves they look paper thin, but the shading at her elbow suggests it's much thicker.
Nether: Your art nouveau approach turned out really well, and kudos on incorporating the insect like attributes. The only thing I could nitpick is that the corner of her mouth extends a little far, but it's hardly an image-breaker.
Joey-b: I like her pose, but the anatomy is a little distracting in some areas. On her breasts the shading is inconsistent from her skin to the fabric - the skin is shaded like they are large and pushed together, whereas the fabric shading makes them look smaller and more separated.
Masque: Still one of my favorite entries. I think the colors felt a little more dreamy before you adjusted them, but it's gorgeous.
FerrousJack: Titania at war! I don't see why you think you sucked on this one, I think it looks great. The explosions are well executed, her foreshortening is convincing, and it has a good atmosphere. It's also a really original take on the subject.
D@niel: Gorgeous final image. She looks like she belongs in that environment, which is something I struggle with. I'm also particularly fond of her face, and how you handled the stream.

Continuing...
Wolfentir: Your lineart is simple and effective, and the coloring looks very natural. Her arm and shoulder resting on the tree look a little off - her shoulder seems too high. My only real crit with the design is that she doesn't read as a queen, or a fairy, but that's subjective.
fersteger: Beautiful environment. Of all of them I think yours looks the most wild and natural. Her figure and face are also lovely.
anamirela: I loved your entry. Sweet design, and the little skulls are a great detail.
darknight: The veins in her wings turned out nicely, but your palette is over saturated and her anatomy could use some work. Her arms are very thin and lack definition. Also be careful of using pure black for your shadows. Just about all shadows are affected by bounced and reflected light, by using pure black you can muddy up your colors and flatten the image.
Artofinca: I love how tribal her design feels, and the subtle use of red to make her face the focus. The streams of light are also a nice touch. In some areas the shading is overly dark, like around her hips, and the finish of the image is inconsistent. Her face and the details of her headdress are my favorite part.
LA-Fairy: Her wings turned out nicely. The anatomy stands out the most as needing correcting. Her proportions are inconsistent and her hips are attached oddly. Also try to keep a light source in mind - right now everything has been given the same amount of light and shadow.
revenebo: I laughed when I saw this one, the concept is fantastic. The touches like her scepter, little wings, and expression really sell it.
Tommoy: She's very regal looking. Beautiful finished entry, it has a wonderful flow to it and your color choices are lovely. The only thing that stuck out to me is the arm behind her - the elbow is too high and the joint is strange. Otherwise the anatomy is great.
naRai: Man.. that is sinister! Her face really draws you in. Anatomy is exaggerated but beautiful. Great lighting too. :D
Kroevyn: The drape and shading of the fabric is gorgeous, and the subdued palette reminds me of fairy tale illustrations I saw when I was little. One thing I noticed, which is more apparent in the thumbnail, is that her staff is not straight. It looks like she's bending it around her back. Her wings look more skeletal than see-through, which is due to the sharpness of the lines. If they were a little softer they wouldn't seem so stark and severe.
erinel: Blue is my favorite color, so that's already a plus in my book. I like that you went with the ice route too. As you already said, the anatomy of her arm is off, but I think it's awesome you went natural media.
Sekino: She seems very druid like, and I love that she's glowing. I know it's probably not what you were going for, but I would have liked to see some shading on her body :)
dwinbotp: Great finished entry! The way her legs stretch and the environment curves is a little disorienting, but your use of color and the lighting is very effective.
plissken:The swirls look like they were almost carved into her skin and the wing design is interesting. The anatomy of her lower half could use some work, especially at her tush and knees.
shannanigan: One of my favorites this round. Her arms and head seem a little out of proportion to the rest of her body, but yours was one of the few entries (or only? I can't remember :D ) that included the Indian boy and the design all around turned out fantastic.
O_O Good grief, that's just one page! I need a break. I don't know if I'm up to commenting on everyone, haha ;)

To keep my votes to a reasonable number, I tried to decide what factors to consider. Besides the standard factors (technical skill, composition, etc.), I thought about what distnguishes Titania from a standard fantasy fairy character.
Three things: The first two are beauty and menace, both in an uneasy balance. The third is feyness, an otherworldliness, the impression that while Titania might look human or humanesque, she is NOT a human being.
In addition, I also looked to see how far each artist pushed the boundaries of the standard representation of the character.
So, I ended up voting for: Matt Dixon, Nether (very nuch toward the inhuman side, but still beautiful), Ciaee, Dan!, Ferrous Zack, Nutter, Trevor, and dayz.
Strong contenders, but not quite making the cut: Arthemis IX, Poshspice, Shannigan, and openanewworld.
And, not meeting the criteria I'd set for voting consideration, but the Piece I'd Most Like To Have Hanging On My Wall: Bluefooted. Just an absolutely lovely piece of work.
This was a very strong CHOW. Thanks for all the hard work, everyone.

My two favorites didn't make it to poll (Franna and Jpedro) so I had to rethink my votes a bit.
Eventually went for Mat Dixon, Decaying Lolita and Posh Spice.
If anyone has some comments on my pic I would greatly appreciate it, at some point it would be nice to get past the "not finished" catagory, so it helps to know what i'm doing wrong.
Thanks ^_^

Something tells me I may be here for a while commenting, but here goes nothing! Red are the ones I voted for.
Angel you've some nice elements in this, and I like the idea of the pet snake, but it would have been nice, if rather than spending time painting the snake, you'd maybe elaborated on her wings, maybe given them some structure, or a different textural feel to her dress.
Arthemix IX: A lovely idea to make the sleeves of her kimono the wings of the butterfly, but the major problem Ihave with this, is without being told it was titania, there is no way I'd have guessed. She comes across more as perhaps some japanese spirit.
Jason Strutz: I keep coming back to this one just for it's unusual design. I love the fact she's not some pretty fairy type, or a sexy half naked chick, that she looks kind of menacing. Only thing that stopped me voting was that the donkey steals all the attention!
Kroevyn: A lovely traditional rendering, this feels like something fro an old masters painting, and she has the lovely mature feel of a queen about her, without being over the top. Only thing I'd tweak would be to make sure the staff was either straight across her back, or curved a little more, as it's at that weird point now where if feels like it's broken. But a lovely image, I particularly like the crown of butterflies.
Matt: Gods I envy your ability with colour! Love the way she glows but not blindingly so. I'm in two minds over this.. I love the final piece, but part of me wishes there were a little more to her design to pick her out as a queen.
Nether: I like the fact you've tried to incorporate so much of nature in her design, and I actually quite like the insectoid legs, even though part of me wonders how she stands upright on them without falling over. Only crit I'd have is in her expression, as I'm not too sure whether she's smiling or not. That angle is such a tricky one to get expressions right in, but I think it comes down to the fact that the outer edges of her mouth seems to be sitting lower than the centre of her mouth, which is why she looks a little like she's grimacing. But other than that I love her!
Deadred: yours was one of the ones that caught my attention, as she comes across as more than just your average fairy, and I like the darker gothic twist you've put into it, especially with the bat wings. The extra creatures perhaps do carry her a little, but they're much more in the background, and you're in no doubt as to who's in charge.
Narai: your stands out to me as one of the more unusual, there's something about it that grabs the attention, but again, I'm not sure I would ever have guessed this to be titania without knowing.
D@niel: One of my faves of this challenge, I love the colours, the polished finish on her, and the way all the elements of the background add a little more to her character without detracting from it. Really love her slightly more animalistic nose style too, and the use of colour on her body is gorgeous. No crits from me on this one!
Yoitisi: The values in this already have a lovely feel to them, but I can't help feel that the little satyr (?) at her feet steals attention from her, in so much as he feels like he was way more character than she does. You might want to watch the proportions in her legs too, the one that's bent, when unfurled would be longer than the one that'\s stood straight at the moment.
Masque: No doubting that this is an elemental being here, but again, same crit as I've had before, in that I wouldn't have pinned her as a fairy queen, more as a spirit of the winds, coming out of the clouds like that. I do love her more otherworldly features though, they're lovely.
Ciaee: one of my absolute faves in this competition. I adore the colours, the design, and the way the fae-ness of her is implied. Not sure if I'd have guessed titania without being told, but this is one of those hypocritical moments I have where the overall finish of the design and the uniqueness of the piece overrides that. Gorgeous stuff.
Dan: Ooh, loving the design of this lady.. i have a thing for more voluptuous female figures anyway, and the colour and composition of this is great. Again the addition of the smaller fairies would leave me in no doubt as to who this might be.
Grendel: your colours, as ever are lovely, I especially like the way her hair stands out, but I'm not getting a fairy queen vibe from it much at all... her top half works really well.. but mayeb it's just the fact my brain is programmed to associate feathers with angelic beings rather than fae.
Quinn: hee hee... she looks like what might happen if Disney decided to give maleficent a fae-queen make over! Love the gold tones, they definitely help with her regality. Can't help but feel like the background detracts from her design a little, though I'm hard pressed to say why exactly... it sort of feels like there should be more there, where a plain background might have allowed me to solely focus on her.
zephyri
February 10th, 2009, 02:16 PM
Vorace: Love the way she leaps off the canvas, so to speak, in those great purplish tones, and her design is really quite funky. Background adds nicely to it too. Her overall proportions feels a little off somewhere to me... maybe the fact her boobs are so small, yet so rounded and pushed up from her rib cage and the fact I'm not quite sure whether she's sat on the log or not makes her posture feel awkward. But other than that, a great piece.
FerrociousJack: gotta give you credit for taking titania into a realm I wouldn't ever have seen her in! not sure if the idea really works for me, though the colors work well,, my eyes are constantly drawn to the part where the explosion meets her wings, as it's the most contrast, drawing attention away from the character herself.
Fersteger: *sigh* this is my favourite piece of the whole challenge. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it, and was hugely disappointed not to see more illustrative work on your website (though what's there is lovely) as I've never seen a work that handles tones that are so similar so wonderfully. She just about pins down how I would see titania myself, just the right blend of human and ethereal. Gorgeous stuff.
Revenebo: Tee hee, this one makes me giggle... the raspeberry staff is awesome, and I love the fact her subjects have to carry her!
Icemoon: there's some nice idea in here, I really like the antennae headpiece and her fragile looking limbs. The dress itself feels a tad negligé for me, which diminishes her queenly-ness. The rich background colours are nice, and you're certainly in no doubt she's a fairy. You might want to watch the proportions of her arms though, given her legs and torso are so long, I would have expected her arms to be too, and they feel a little short, even with perspective involved.
dwinbotp: Unusual design, it's nice to see something like that done here.. she almost feels a touch giger-ish. The background adds a nice touch of otherwordlyness to the image. The lines of the composition feel very... geometric, the fact that her main body lines (ie that f her torso and the wings) are almost cross-shaped fights against the more natural feel her design has. That and the very bright spot over to the right drawing my attention are the only crits I'd have.
Nutter: I really like the rendering of this piece, and the muted colour scheme. I like her design, even though it's quite straight forward, the only issue I have is the fact her wings feel so flat... if you could have got a little curve on them, or maybe even extended the canvas to show them all, it might have helped, but it's a minor point in an otherwise nice piece.
Marco mazzoni: This lady has one of my favourite designs, I love the more insectoid appearance that's echoed in her surroundings. The unsettling colour scheme is nice too, she almost feels like a post apocalyptic titania. Great stuff.
Trevor: If these challenges were just to creating a kickass piece of artwork, you'd have my vote every time, but this time round I can't help but feel the design of the creatures about her is more kickass that titania herself. There's hints at the fact she might be quite the sight to behold, but the illustration kind of obscures her. But colour, composition and technical skill are mint.
Jefita: I'd certainly be in no doubt as to who this lady is, and I actually think you could have cropped it down to just being her for a stronger piece. Really like the lighting and the design of her outfit. Only suggestion I have is to think about the textural quality of things... everything is painted right now as if it were made of the same stuff... maybe adding in a few subtle photo textures on top might help.
Nightblue:Yours is another very traditional-feeling titania, the kind you'd see in a fairy story book, colours are lovely, as is the delicate pose. Only nitpicks I have is that the roses (if that's what they are) look a little odd.. in so much as the petals seem to be arranged oddly. But that might just be me as I've drawn a few in my lifetime! And that her hair feels a little green... a couple of the warmer pinks and grey shades in it might help that.
Jeremy: Tee hee, another one that makes me giggle, you've certainly give titania a whole heap of character with that piece! I love her exaggerated proportions and unconventional looks! I touwld have bene nice to have seen a little more saturation on her and less in the background, so she leapt out a bit more, but it's a minor niggle.
Decaying Lolita: I love her almost pan-like headdress, and the pose suggests she's beckoning the viewer to follow, which I really like too. The background colours are perhaps a little all over the place, I can't help but feel the piece would have been stronger for having one or maybe two hues at the most, in varying strengths to help pop her out of the background.
Bluefooted: When I saw the sketch for this one, I was going to comment on the proportions of her, her legs felt a little awkward . And they still do a bit now, but colour seems to have detracted from that a great deal. Which baffles me! Lovely design as always, and your colours are breathtaking. Love it.
Bug Meyer: Again, kudos for thinking outside the pretty lady box, and the composition of the piece is awesome. She definitely has a great regal feel to her, but I don't wonder if the lack of any human features makes her perhaps a little too alien for a fairy queen? Might just be me though!
Posh: Awesome technical piece, as ever, but (and gods don't hate me for this) it reminds me a little too much of the works of Amy brown, albeit on a much higher scale. No doubting she's definitely a titania, but she's not one of my faves from you.
Sentinel13: Ooh, loving this design, she's something a bit different again. The small wings and ferns definitely add something unusual, and the background gives me a light sense of unease about her. Lovely colour combo too.
Shannanigan: Another unusual setting for a titania, though I do actually like it. Not sure if the little boy at her arm detracts from her a bit, as he's the main contrast in the piece, red against those greeny golds and yellows, but I like her spunk, she's got attitude!
Ionic: I love the finsh of this piece, the bold brushwork and simplicity in texture really brings it to life. No doubting who she is, and her design is quite unusual, she comes across almost like a ranger of some kind, a forest tracker, which I like! No crits, I think the piece is perfect as is.
openanewworld: Again, another I love for it's slight incomplete brushwork. The values you had on the black and white wip were perfect, ad translated well into the colour final. Colours balance nicely, and the surroundings give her a great fairy-esque presence.
Days: I think the composition of this is bold, and I love the colours in it, but I can't help but feel that the fabric is stealing attention from the figure a little. If someone had told me this was a mythical/storybook figure, I'd have probably guessed at Little Red Riding hood, but it's a great piece.
Felida: A classic story book fairy scene! Love the fox and the design of titania's headpiece, though I'd have loved to have seen more of a close up just on her and maybe the fox, and for you to have really gone all out on her. Great illustration though!
OMG.. *falls over* Great, great round guys, almost makes me glad I didn't have time for it, I'd have been swamped in all this awesome work!

I've been trying put new stuff in these Chow thingies, and I'm actually pretty surprised they get into the polls cause I sit and look at them and just don't like them... I'm not too confident with colouring and stuff, so I spose I could use a little help with that if anytihng, My favourites are actually the less colourful/ crowded ones - ciaee, deadred (I also agree that maybe the creatures are carrying the character a little, but they also add to her personality), narai, dan!, fersteger, and nutter.
Dayz' entry looks more like red riding hood to me.

Firstly, I'd like to say that I hope I didn't misspell anybody's name, I tend to do that sometimes, and if it was a case this time, I apologize in advance...
I voted for (tried to limit myself to 3):
Bugmeyer: I really like your unusual interpretation of the subject. I think it was daring to make her look so insect like, since I feel people relate better to more human looking characters. I like the way you framed her with the background and the purposefully placed flower that makes her skin stand out from the environment. I also like the atmosphere of the image, those little glowing bits really make it look magical.
Mat Dixon: I love how she glows, it is very eye catching and for me it one of the most memorable pieces in this round. She definitely has this unearthly feel about her, and the moment you look at her you know that she's a faerie.
fersteger: When I first saw the image i felt like there was a discord between the character and the background/foreground element. My eye would wonder to flowers and plants instead of the character. The more I look at this image, the more it grows on me though, and the more I like it. I think the figure is absolutely beautiful, and she definitely looks very regal. I also like the classical pose it is very graceful.
Other images that caught my eye:
Bluefooted: I have always admired your work, and this image is no exception. I love the butterfly wing dress and how her hair turns into starts. Your work has storybook feel to it, and it reminds me of all the things I enjoyed in books as a child, it is very inspiring.
Openanewworld: This is a very beautiful illustration, I love the idea behind the image (I think how she's feeding other faeries with her blood is brilliant) The figure is gorgeous and so is the lighting. My only critique would be that it doesn't feel entirely finished to me. I don't think it'd need much more work, I'd just like to see some areas on the character a little bit more polished, but perhaps I'm just nitpicking. All in all it's a lovely image.
Trevor: I really like the supporting characters in this image, I think they are what really makes that Illustration for me. Those creatures with pointed noses look just awesome!
Claee: I adore her translucent dress and her childlike demeanor. She is beautiful, and the colors and lighting really make her seem like a creature from another world. The animal head and puddle of blood are a great touch as well. I think your interpretation is closest to the type of creatures faeries would be in my eyes.
Marco: You always impress me with what you do (I had your Dune weekly as my screen background for a while) and I really like your interpretation of Titania as well. I like how you included insect elements, and yet managed to still make her look humanoid. The environment is great as well, and I think it suits the character.
Kroevyn: I love her headdress! The color palette of the image really draws attention to it. I also like her outfit a lot and her translucent wings.
Pixeltuner: Her outfit is gorgeous, and i like the energy of the image. The hair wrapping around the branch is a nice touch, and I find the composition very attractive. It feels like everything moves with her when she passes through.
Deadred:: The first thing I noticed looking at your image was the character, so I didn't notice the huge bunny and the accompanying monster right away. (I love the design on that guy by the way!) I really like how she glows, and the arms turning into wings are a cool and creepy touch.
I liked most of the entries in this round (some of them I didn't mention here, because I didn't feel like I had enough to say about them) Great job to everyone.
shannanigan
February 10th, 2009, 02:49 PM
shannanigan: One of my favorites this round. Her arms and head seem a little out of proportion to the rest of her body, but yours was one of the few entries (or only? I can't remember :D ) that included the Indian boy and the design all around turned out fantastic.
Thanks for voting for my piece! And yeah the arms are bugging me actually. "Skeleton-wise" they are ok, but I think the poofy sleeve design and hands (too big) are throwing it off. I may revisit them and make adjustments later. Her head is on purpose though... its the "Disney Princess" effect. LOL! ;)

Ok, here's the rest that's in poll. Sorry for the delay!
Nether - I liked how you incorporated all the different things into her design. I agree with I think Zephri pointed out, it doesn't seem as if she could walk. But hey, she's magical, she'll find a way.
Jeremy Hoffman - I liked the design, and her expression. Probably the only thing I find with it is she doesn't seem all that royal, or maybe more like a princess playing then a Queen playing. But I love her personality, and fae are tricky little things.
D@niel - loved the piece, it was beautiful. The far hand bothered me on this for some reason and I don't know why. Sorry, not much of a crit. But, I really did love this piece.
Jefita - really loved this scene, I think you really captured her. I have a feeling though, and seeing what you wrote, that you didn't quite finish it the way you wanted.
Felida - love the story book feeling and the pastel colors.
Dayz - really great piece. Love the way you did her wings. But, I think that because it's such a bold color, Tatiana sorta blends into the sky, and you really don't see her so much.
Nutter - loved this. She looks a lot like a gargoyle, and I think it was an awesome idea to have that tie in. The piece doesn't seem finished because her wings, to me, look like they didn't get as much love as her. Like they should be a little more textured. If that makes any sense.
Trevor - love the feel to this piece. And the design is just amazing! She seem to have a very commanding personality in this piece, which I like. And you captured the ethereal quality without making her seem scary.
Icemoon - the design elements are nice. But, I think her right leg is a bit stiff, and a little short it seems. Also, I think her arms should probably be a little bit longer. Love her scepter? I think I spelled that wrong.
Revenebo - fun image, I liked her.
Fersteger - loved this image. She is gorgeous and you did a great job with all the details.
dwinbotp - love all the nature elements and the colors are wonderful.
FerrousJack - nice direction you took.
Quinn Simoes - Wonderful design. Couple things I noticed 1. the winged part of her shoulder things on her left side is a little wonky. I think that highlight is what throws it off. It makes it look like its a part of her head. And her wings don't seem to matcher her, they seem like they should be grander.
Kroveyn - love her image, it's very beautiful and she seems very elegant and regal. Only thing, her staff is broken.
Yoitisi - wish I could've seen her in color, I think it would be gorgeous that way too. Love the satyr. I think her head may be a little big.
Grendel Grack - loved the design and her wings are wonderful. I think though, since so much focus is drawn towards those orbs, a little more love could've been given to them.
Masque - beautiful image, I love how she's rolling out of the clouds and I enjoyed watching your painting technique progress.
Ciaee - I loved this image. I think you captured fairy exactly.
I think, possibly, I got everyone in the poll. If I didn't get you, and you want me to give you a crit, just say so. I don't go in order, it keeps me sane, but also makes it really difficult to see if I got everyone.
I'm may try to get everyone else. Such a big round!
And, if anyone finds time and sees anything they'd like to crit on mine I'd really appreciate it. I know how long that takes though. :)

They are all quite lovely, and all so different. I voted for Matt Dixon mostly because he captured the mishieviousness of the elfen nature. He incorporates beauty with magik and nature. His image is clear and his colors work very well together. Nice Matt!
Christoffer
February 10th, 2009, 04:27 PM
Harsh with the cuts this week, sorry guys, but you have to follow the guidelines, especially in rounds like this. :/
no wips
Christoffer (also not attached).
Yup! Totally missed it. I'm not surprised though. I seem to be forgetting all kinds of stuff these days. I think I might be turning prematurely senile. I'm glad I at least participated in this fantastic and huge round, I learned a lot. I'll remember the rules next time.
At her sleeves they look paper thin, but the shading at her elbow suggests it's much thicker.Thank you very much for taking the time. I really appreciate it. :D My entry was a clumsy effort and even though I didn't make the cut because of my own lack attention, I'm thinking of editing my character in hope of making an improvement. Your crits will most definitely come in handy. Thanks again.

amazing work everyone, you all area a goal to reach towards.
i voted for
Matt Dixon I love the way you made her glow, as she sits there all mischievous with a smirk. the piece really stood out.
deadred the dark fairy look worked great. she looks regal and full brooding power.for some reason she stood out as the most "evil" of the queens
Daniel her and her environment are wonderfully put together. i pleasure to view
Ciaeeis my favorite. you captured a plethora of imagery in such a ingenious design. wicked yet innocent, playful yet dark, beautiful yet creepy.
vorace i love the color you used and how phoenix like she looks.
dwinbotb love the design of how earthen she is and combined with colorful interesting background, very nice.
Trevor this image captured my attention from the start and kept it till the end. such an unforgiving presence of malice.
sentinal13 the her eyes and wings keep grabbing my eyes. so otherworldly. amazing work
Ionic i love the way it looks. the interaction with the fairy's around and just how peacful the image is.

Such a big round!
Voted for:
POSHSPICE from the first sketch done in lunch break that you posted I knew I'll vote for,
SENTINEL13 cool character and most of all for the fair play (time spent doing crits for everybody, even for those not being in the poll!)
TREVOR for such a great piece of artwork full of details from the finals and, of course, for the sliced version from the poll!

Thanks everyone, for the comments and crits! I guess it's giving back time. C:
Matt Dixon:
I love the colors in yours and her dress is really beautiful. Very lovely mood.
jshamburger:
I really liked your WIP when it was just beginning to get some color. I think you overdid the effects and added too many elements in the final, and things just weren't really in harmony anymore.
skorpi:
The edges are too soft and that blurs the separation of the objects, and the distinction between the foreground and the background. I liked the character design though- adding camouflage textures to them is a cool idea.
JOHNGRELLO:
I think yours is beautiful and I like her expression. If I were to nitpick, her right calf (left to us) feels just a little thicker and shorter than her left.
Physicalpariah:
I like the atmosphere of your painting, but the position and angle of her head feels quite unnatural. I think that it would be a good idea to look for references as a guide.
doombee:
I think that your character design is very cool and my favorite part is her tail. There's something about her hair though- it doesn't feel like it's in the same perspective as the rest of her head.
Marco Mazzoni:
Yours blew me away when I first saw it. Wonderful setting and textures.
Christoffer:
Like Sentinel13 said, your image is missing some darks. A slightly darker background might have helped bring her out a little more, but you really need to push the core shadows on the fairy itself.
Nether:
Very interesting style and design. Something about her makes me think that she's probably very wise.
Joey-b:
Nice pose and wings. The one thing that really bothered me about yours was the textures on her dress. The patterns just looked like they were laid over the image instead of following the folds of the dress. There's a good tutorial on how to do that here: http://budgie.deviantart.com/art/Simple-Cloth-Pattern-Tutorial-74901990. Or alternatively, you could use the "Forward Warp Tool" under Filter > Liquify and have "Show Backdrop" checked with Opacity at 50-60%. I hope that helps!
Masque:
I'm not sure if they'll be considered to be "finished" in CHOW, but I really liked your WIPs and their sketchiness. Your final looks great too, but I felt that the finishing took out some of those really nice graphic shapes, especially in her hair.
FerrousJack:
You didn't suck this CHOW, Jack! It's a totally different interpretation of fairies from the rest and I think that's actually pretty cool.
D@niel:
Yours was very well-executed. I see you have a new avatar! xD
Wolfentir:
I really liked the colors in yours and I think your style is great. My only gripe is that there wasn't much to see in the image.
fersteger:
I love the visible strokes in yours. Great style and body language. If there was one thing I could change, it'll be to sharpen some of the soft edges in her hair. The trees in the background was drawing more of my attention because of how crisp their edges were. Overall though, it's a gorgeous painting.
anamirela:
I'm actually a little sad that this one got cut. I think it was quite bold to submit something so stylized for CHOW and that the little queen has got some attitude.
darknight:
The pure whites and blacks made the painting feel very harsh. It seems that you're trying to set a specific mood and atmosphere for your painting, but some sensitivity to colors and values is needed and subtleties can really go a long way. Try looking at photographs that has the mood that you want to achieve and observe how the colors interact with each other.
Artofinca:
Thanks for the add on CGHUB! On your character, I think that the details of her design is great. On your painting however, I would suggest adding more interest to the shadows. They don't need to be pure black all the time.
LA-Fairy:
Try visualizing with a single light source in mind. When you do this, it becomes easier to figure out where the highlights should go, where the core shadows will form, and where the cast shadows will fall.
revenebo:
I love yours! Those poor tiny fairies...
Tommoy:
It's already a good painting, but I would accentuate that glow behind her to add more drama.
naRai:
This one's really creepy. I really like the style and the contrast in the one. Great textures, very nice mood, and simple but effective design. She doesn't really feel like a fairy anymore but if you were going for that "horror" look, I'd say you've succeeded.
Kroevyn:
Beautiful, beautiful painting. I noticed that her staff isn't straight, but who knows- maybe it's made of natural twigs and those are seldom ever straight.
erinel:
I've already commented on this in the WIP thread, but nice watercoloring.

Masque: I'm not sure if they'll be considered to be "finished" in CHOW, but I really liked your WIPs and their sketchiness. Your final looks great too, but I felt that the finishing took out some of those really nice graphic shapes, especially in her hair.I agree, which is why I've saved the line work off as separate images. But they wouldn't be finished enough "as is" for ChOW (at least that's my impression from quite a few participations), and I haven't yet got the hang of translating that treatment into a fully-rendered colored image, at least not for figures. Yet :D.
Thanks for your kind comment, 'tis much appreciated.

Ok, first of all I wanted to say that this was an awesome round which I'm really sorry I missed but my studying schedule is packed till the end of the month unfortunately so... blah.
Since I don't have the time to write out crits to everyone, I'll just do the ones I voted for. It was a really hard choice, btw.
Kroveyn - She's gorgeous. I voted for this one because she really does look like a queen. Anatomy wise, her legs look kinda longish, and her wings don't really look like a part of her, more like a part of the dress. But those are just minor issues, I love this one.
fersteger - I love the painterly style of this one. It's not only the lady that is beautiful but the FOLIAGE! Man, it blew me away. Awesome job. :)
Nutter - ah, I'm a fan of yours, what can I say. I love the horns and the fact that she's so curvy. This is really a great picture
Sentinel13 - my fav this round, as I already pointed out in this other thread. She looks magical and has the queen attitude. Perfect! Major kudos :D
openanewworld - ahh man, what can I say... I always hoped you'll start participating in CHOWs since I'm a regular in your sketchbook and now you're kicking ass! Great job man :)

Zephyri + Dan!: Thanks for the comments, very useful. I totally agree with the dress and wings and had to laugh Zephyri because I actually spent more time on the dress and wings and not so much on the snake and headdress and they turned out alot better...a lesson in how not to overpaint there!
- Overpainting is something I do struggle with but I'll keep entering these and hopefully it's something I can rectify, I've had so much fun and learnt so much...thanks for hosting and commenting and everything! :) x

[Again, I'm sorry for my English. I try to give my best D:]
Thanks a lot for the comments on my drawing and of course for the votes :D I really apreciate it and I hope I can use everything I learned from working on this piece next round.
Now I finally found the time to vote, too:
Hard decision, because there are so many wonderful pieces *___*
I voted for:
Jason Strutz: A really creative character design, especially the donkey's face is awesome. For me, you found the perfect mixture of rough rendering and love for the details. I also like the composition a lot!
Matt Dixon: I'm so impressed by all this details in her clothing and the awesome "glow in the dark" effect. Your drawing transports for me what the word "Fairy" means.
D@niel: The nature around her seems to be full of magic. I love the almost supernatural face and the beautiful colors everywhere. Although she doesn't really look like I imagined a fairy, the place really looks like somewhere fairies can hide :D
Ciaee: Wonderful technique. Everything, I can write about your piece has already been written. I love the magic atmosphere!
Dan: I'm so impressed by the wonderful wings and the beautiful soft atmosphere. Beautiful character design. Just one thing: There really seem something wrong with her arms but I can't put my finger on it...
Vorace: Blue skin rules ;D The character design is fun and I'm so impressed by the background, I can't help but press "vote".
festeger: My favorite picture in the poll. She really is a fairy queen, and the background's gorgeous. I could stare on the details in your piece for hours without getting bored.
revenobo: You definitely deserve my vote because your drawing made me happy *lol* Fun character design (and btw. Your drawing was my boyfriend's favorite in the poll so I also click in his name :D)
marco mazzoni: My second favorite here. Festeger's piece is my fav in the classic fairy category, your's in the altenative one ;D
jeremyhoffman: I like your style a lot. And I'm in love with the angry little dwarf *_*
bluefooted: Your drawing looks like directly from a classic illustrated book about fairies. I love the style (In my drawing I tried to aim for a similar coloring style but I failed V__V) and the colors are gorgeous.
bugmeyer: The colors are so lively and the design of your Tiania is so outstanding. I only think her front leg is a little bit too long.
Sentinel13: I already wrote in the WiP thread how much I like your style. Great work.
shannanigan: I like, how you're so different in your style. Fun character design :D
openanewworld: I really got a faible for drawings with such a magic background. Gorgeous work.
Because the decision was this hard, some more comments:
angelinthuk: I like the soft feeling in your drawing and the beautiful snake. But maybe you can try to use more color contrast in your drawing next time. Also the composition of the background seems a little bit unsure.
artemisX: Beautiful clothing design. I only miss the "Fairy" feeling a little bit.
Kroevyn: Prety color choice, I like the autumn-feeling. The lower part of her body seems to be a little long and I'm not really sure but there also seems something wrong with her hips. Maybe next time, you can think of a more interesting composition but the rendering of her clothes is awesome.
Nether: I'm still a huge fan of your drawing because of this unique character design and the interesting colors. I know, that there wasn't much time, but a tiny little bit more love for the background would have been awesome :)
Deadred: Doubtless a impressive painting! The creature design is---- well. Cute. But for me, the woman is no Titania.
Narai: Every time I see your drawing, my first thought is "Pan's Labyrinth". She reminds me a lot on the Fairy eater. You reated a really creepy crature and impressive use of textures.
yoitisi: Something in her anatomy seems off. She also doesn't seem really queenly
Masque: Pretty woman, wonderful rendering.
Grendel Grack: Nice composition and an interesting idea. I Like the wings a lot.
Quinn Simoes: Interesting dress! But IMO the background is too clean. I like how you drew the grass!
ferrous Jack: Your idea is really outstanding. I only think, with another composition you could have added more dynamic to your drawing.
Icemoon: Her dress is really pretty but in your piece, I miss vitality. Her pose is so stiff and there's also something wrong with the anatomy. The legs are too long and the arms too short. But the idea with the horns is really nice.
dwinbotp: Awesome design and a awesome background. Only her legs seem to be broken. Maybe you can fix that some day :)
nutter: I really like your drawing style. Simple piece but a interesting character. IMO not "fairy" enough.
trevor: Perfect work. The only reason why you didn't get a vote from me is, that IMO she lost the "fairy" character somewhere and also the creatures around her doesn't remind me on something fairy-like.
jefita: It's not really clear, what you want to tell us with that scene. The poses of the two are so unsure and the anatomy of both is a little bit off. But I like the mood and the colors.
nightblue: Clean job. I only miss some more detail in the background. Of course not too much to let the focus on the character but it could make the compositio more interesting.
decayinglolita: Wonderful mood. But there seem something wrong with the perspective and the anatomy. Nevetheless. Good job.
poshspice: Your drawing transports a really nice feeling. Like the details in the tree.
ionic: Nice style. I read the royal enough/fairy enough discussion and I have to admit, she doesn't look like a queen for me. But nevertheless, beautiful character design.
dayz: I like the dynamic in your drawing.
Jefita
February 11th, 2009, 08:10 AM
Gracias, Jefita!
That makes it even cooler. This was really one of my favorites.
Dan!, zephyri, MJ_Alcazar - Thank you all for the crits. I'm afraid I have to agree with all of you. I worked on this image a lot, but I just pushed it too close to the deadline and didn't get to add in a lot of of little details and finishing touches I wanted. I think I may go back and refine it and perhaps crop out the boy. I would like to get more satisfaction for the time I put in to this.

Thank you again everyone for your sweet comments! Here are more comments and crits.
If yours isn't in here, it's either in [here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2125829&postcount=166)] or [here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2128486&postcount=182)].
Sekino:
It seems as if you intended to make her glow but just by looking at it, I got a little confused by the hints of shadow in some places and by how some objects don't seem to catch enough light. I can't decide if her skin is green and translucent or if there's a greenish light coming from the back.
dwinbotp:
Great colors and finishing. I really like her hair and her leafy wings. To push the image further, I would suggest applying some foreshortening to her. It feels as if her surroundings are quite dramatic in terms of perspective, but she wasn't really affected by the skew.
plissken:
Anatomically speaking, her head feels a little to big and her right arm (left to us) feels a slightly shorter than her left. I really like the watercolor textures in the background, but I feel that the swirls on her body could use a little varying up.
shannanigan:
Nice overall design- I really like her hat. Her head's just slightly too big (but dismissable as stylization), and I think that yours is one of the few that will actually work as a bookcover on the story of Titania. I also like that you included the Indian changeling.
yellowrun:
Interesting design, but feels quite unfinished.
Antne:
Thanks for leaving me a comment on DA! I'm sorry that you didn't make the cut, I actually thought that swirly magic stuff around her was quite rad.
NateShaw:
I'm not sure if you changed anything since my last crit, but her left forearm (right in the image) still feels a little short. As said before, great body language and I still love those owls.
Poshspice:
One of my favourite entries. Beautiful linework and very nice traditional feel. I think you succeeded in getting that Arthur Rackham feel!
monkeybread:
The pose in one of your WIPs (top right) looks a lot more believable than your final. Although she has wings to save her if it happens, it looks like she's going to fall over.
IIKII:
The pose/gesture in your initial sketch feels a lot more natural than your final.
GiantRibot:
I was happy to see that you fixed her breasts and was quite shocked that you didn't make it to the poll. =\
Wingedchime:
I absolutely adore your image and am thoroughly horrified that you didn't make the cut. You'd definitely get my vote if you did. Wonderful design, colors, idea and execution all at once. Perfect job.
Arthemix IX:
Beautiful mix of Asian and butterfly themes. If there's anything I would change, it'll be the bottom of her dress. It feels strangely "cut-off" in the final and I prefer how it looked in the earlier stages.
IceMoon:
Aww, don't be upset about not getting many votes. I can't really point out anything wrong with your artwork, but perhaps it didn't have that something to really grab people's attention. I feel that it's very well painted though, and I really like her little dress.
Crowsrock:
Lots of the entries in this round lost the flow that they had in their initial sketches and I honestly find that to be quite a pity. In yours, although it's great to see the artwork finished, she looks quite tense now compared to when she looked quite relaxed in the sketch. Is that the Indian changeling on her wand? I like that.
dirkvandulmen:
Already commented on this in the WIP thread methinks. Beautiful bright colors.
benu:
I like her wings and her horns but I feel that the cast shadows (although there's just a little of it in the painting) need to be more hard-edged.
Windsrock:
Commented on this earlier in the WIP thread. Missing some soft-edges.
Mitze:
It's a beautiful painting, but I felt that it's a little unnatural for her to hold her dress up because it isn't a long dress. Still, beautiful.
amaliax:
This gives me the feeling of an old tarot card illustration. Nice. The smileys in your WIPs made me laugh. xD
Pixeltuner:
I can't believe yours didn't make it to the poll. It's stunning.
Franna:
Very interesting take on the character. A little soft around the edges for something mechanical, though. If you had given the same amount of attention to the rest of the image as you did her face, it would've been more convincing.
Zilrion:
This feels almost like a screenshot from a game. Nice mood.
Bugmeyer:
Very cool exaggerated perspective. I also find it very interesting for Titania to be a praying mantis.
Lammashta:
I actually kinda like the stark lighting in yours. I just wish it was more finished...
Angel Intheuk:
I love her dress and her pet snake.

Wow, this was a hard choice! There are many I liked but I narrowed it down to these Six.
Matt Dixon: Loved the lighting, pose and colours.
D@NIEL: Great feel to this image. Nice use of colour.
fersteger: Great colour and detail. I would have liked to have seen her looking a little less Human.
dwintbotp: Like the colours and body design.
Marco Mazoni: Great image! Very dark, (which I love) and cool body design.
openanewworld: Interesting image and lovely use of colour.
Well done to everyone else! What a massive turn-out!

Ciaee: Thnx a bunch, but obviously not quite stunning enough ;) Yours is looking fab. I especially like the 'washed-out' look contrasting with the highly saturated details, very atmospheric.
Wingedchime: Thank you :) I tried to make her kind of 'one' with her surroundings, the vines on her legs, her dress 'growing' from the trees, her hair interacting with the branches etc.
You obviously took that a bit further making her a flower and all, which to me is a stroke of genius. :D Also, your painting is very light and delicate which is makes her look fragile which in turn could be a symbol for nature's fragility. So... I'm wandering off a bit but ,bottom line is: I like it

Thanks guys for the comments! I dont feel upset about the votes, it's just that I didn't see what was wrong with my piece, I see it now. I can work on that in my future drawings. I should've posted wips in the other thread, that wouldve helped my process :lifedrawing: It was an honour to be in this awesome round. So many beautiful pics!!

Epic round. I haven't seen anything so great since Bard of Apocalypse, Steampunk Airship Pilot or Black Queen CHOWs...
Among so many beautiful fairies I preferred to narrow my votes down to those pieces which IMO clearly convey the idea of Queen. I would have voted for Felida too but his/her work wasn't in the poll yet...
Thanks to those who took time to comment! (I'm too slow at writing in English things with a sense and it would take me ages to comment everyone, so I don't comment at all, sorry...)

nice results, good range of interpretations. I didn't read over all the comments so might be writing stuff other people already brought up...
Angel Intheuk: The figures okay, the dress could have used some reference though, and the composition is getting split in half because of two bright values on either side; I think reducing the values of one or both would bring the focal back to the figure. I like the size reference you put in btw, unless that snake is giant, can never tell with these fantasy things.
Arthemis IX: I like the color scheme and moth wing design, the costume however looks more like a geisha to me, not that I'm an expert in Japanese culture or anything. I'd suggest you look up some court costumes or something, here's one I just found http://flickr.com/photos/pierdolapaciencia/409990421/
Jason Strutz: Haha, that headdress is so over the top I really don't know what to say. I like how the picture is resolved and at the same time not over-rendered. I'm finding it hard to comment on the design though other than technical stuff since I don't exactly know what the intent is. What's the headdress's material? I'm finding that ambiguous. I'm assuming metal but there's no specular, if stone there's not enough texture or it's polished smooth.
Kroveyn: Love the costume design on this, looks like it can be produced in the real world. The contrast with the muted colors and bright colors on the headdress works very well, same with background and figure separation. Very nice.
Matt: love the luminousity and color choice, I like how the dress' material look like petals or leaves almost.
Deadred: I think the painting is beautiful, I like the design as well, however it feels more like succubus than fairy to me, must be the corset, bat wings and moon. But I think it'd work in a darker feeling story anyway.
wanted to comment on everyone's but I gotta get started on work soon so just ones that caught my eye...
Ciaee: Love everything about this, the costume, pose, etc. I like how it seems like the viewer is looking from below as well, seems to work with the queen thing.
Fersteger: I like the painterly quality you got with your image, the hair is really nicely done, has that soft look.
Bluefooted: Always liked your work, especially your line quality. Your style seems well suited to the topic, has an old school illustrator feel.
Poshspice: First thing that came to my mind when I saw this was Rackham. I like the frail/sensitive quality you got to the line work, no aggressive marks; works well with fairies.

If yours is not here, it's either in [here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2125829&postcount=166)] or [here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2126420&postcount=175)].
Kitten Poker:
Her arms feel a little chunky compared to the rest of her. I'd suggest looking for photos to see how an arm would look (foreshortened) from this angle.
Nightblue:
I like how "soft" and calm this feels even though she's holding a knife.
Dan!:
Very beautifully done. I love her outfit and the fact that most of her face can't be seen.
hunchback:
I feel that yours had a lot of potential. Her posture and expression says a lot her and I really love how you did the face, but the rest of the painting really could've been further developed.
Graphuji:
Maybe it's the mask, but her head doesn't seem to fit on her body. Interesting direction with the design though.
Vorace:
I went like, whoa. Amazing colors, crazy design, wonderful mood, excellent execution... really eye-grabbing. I really love how you painted the background and everything- not too hyper-realistic but very believable. Impressive work. (This is going to sound like the weirdest thing ever, but zomg I think I like her pubes? xD)
dragon4lunch:
I'm not sure what happened to the angle of the head in the final. It looked a lot more natural in the early stage.
bluefooted:
Great style, gorgeous outfit and I really like that she's riding on a moth(?). Your painting makes me want to believe in fairytales!
Sticmann:
Is that Titania as a gypsy? Very interesting. On your painting, I think you need to pay some attention to some of your values. Take the shadows for example. Compare them (i.e. the shadows on her body compared to the ones on the wings and keys... etc.) and see if they make sense.
Jason Strutz:
Very nice style and definitely eye-catching. Great to hear that you're satisfied with this piece. (:
Grendel Grack:
Beautiful outfit- I love how you sort of made her wings part of her dress. (I had that in mine too but I'm not sure if it reads, but yours does.)
Sulk-Sal:
I've already pointed out the perspective issue in the WIP thread. I felt that the composition could be tighter (cropping would help) and that there was just too much gray in your image. I hope you don't me editing your painting to show you what I would've done to improve it. Link to image: http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll176/ciaee/CHOW146_Sulksaledit.jpg I used "Image > Adjustments > Variations" to add a little bit of pink/purple-ish color to the overall to tie everything together. Hope that helps!
openanewworld:
Hey Herman! It's great to see you here. xD I have nothing to say about your technique and I really love the concept/idea that you're going for here. Great creativity!
trevor:
Another one of those stunning submissions this week. Brilliant rendering, and great details. I love the textures on her arms and legs.
MJ_Alcazar:
When I saw yours in the WIP thread, I thought that you were eventually going to add some brights to your painting. I would've really accentuated that glow coming from that little fairy flying in the air, just to light everything up a little.
Nutter:
You've got great skills and technique and I love how you focused on adding details to select areas, but I also can't help feeling that the painting is a little unfinished.
dayz:
Interesting story and nice colors but like Nutter's entry, although I love how you focused on adding details to select areas, I feel that it's a little unfinished in other areas. It's still a great painting.
careless:
Beautiful painting. Yours gives me that "old masters" feel.
Ah Chu:
Pretty good job for your first time at painting a lady. There's one little thing I'd like to point out. Look at the shadow on her legs and compared that to the shadow on her neck. Relativity is important in creating unity in an image.
grenogs:
I think you did the grass/leaves especially well and everything else was painted nicely. Now the image just needs a little bit of brightening up (I feel). I hope you don't mind me doing this, but I did some light editing to show you what I would've done if it was mine. Link to image: http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll176/ciaee/CHOW146_grenogsedit.jpg
ikuru:
Hey, I love those new things you added in the background! You seem to be developing quite an interesting style, so keep painting.
cyc:
There's a some bad tangent going on with her wing and the border of your image. I would either shift her to the right a little more, or crop out more of that wing.
Duq:
Cool throne, but her pose looks a little stiff to me. I also felt the colors in your 4th WIP (bottom left) worked better than the those in your final.
Felida:
Great final entry. Lovely style. I still wonder what's happening- is she scolding him? D:
Dead Clown:
For some reason, that banner made me think of pirates. Very cool idea to incorporate the banner; the only crit I have is that her leg feels too thin.
Jeremy Hoffman:
Very cute scene. I would try getting some subtle variations of color in to add more interest to the painting.
jpedro:
I think that her head is done especially well and I really like the visible outlines in there. I feel that if you did the same thing for all of her, it might have helped make her pop.
WunderDark:
Dark fairies are my thing, although yours don't really look like a fairy anymore. xD Nice style, keep drawing.
Hideyoshi:
Really neat design; love her hat. Feels a little unfinished, but no crits!
Amedyr:
Haha, I love your idea. You've got a nice sketchy style too.
yoitisi:
Not sure if it's intended, but her head feels justtt a touch too big. Besides that, good technique and great rendering. I'm happy to see at least one grayscale submission this round.
DecayingLolita:
I think you improved a lot from the last round and that's awesome. I'm assuming that you used photo-textures for the water (which is perfectly fine), but I would do a little bit of touching-up by painting over it or around it, so that it blends with the rest of the painting a little more.
deadred:
Exceptionally well done. It's interesting to see how the colors change through your WIPs. Lovveee the bunny.
Sorknes:
Not sure why this didn't make the poll. Cool spider (?) Titania. There's a bad tangent going on at the top though.
Ciaee:
That's mine! xD
Sentinel13:
Beautifully done. I love the little bird she's holding up. It's really well done as it is, but if you don't mind allow me to show you what I would have done to it if it was mine. Link to image: http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll176/ciaee/chow146_sentinel13edit.jpg I darkened some of the darks, and made the blue glow brighter and more saturated. I'm not sure if this is what you're going for (and I think I might have overdone it a little), but I felt that these small changes can help add drama to your painting.
Jefita:
I love those silhouettes in the background. I wish you had added some description to go along with your image so that we'd know what's going on. Very well done, and lovely style.
Quinn Simoes:
I think you did the face well and some parts of her dress, but things kinda got hazy at the bottom and the wings feel of a completely different finish.
That's everyone, I think. I really did think of how each one can be improved and I hope I wasn't too harsh with some of my comments. Grenogs, Sulk-Sal and Sentinel 13, I hope you won't mind me doing the edits without asking for permission.
Voted for - Jason Strutz, Matt Dixon, deadred, Vorace, trevor, bluefooted, PoshSpice and openanewworld.

Cheers for that..good points I'll definitely remember and you're right I hardly used any reference on the dress and wings, or much of the picture really (apart from the headdress and snake) bad me...I will skulk shamefully away and be better next time :)
p.s the snake is a grass snake, just bigger than a hand, if i'd had more time I probably would have put more objects for size reference like a leaf to make it a bit more obvious.

Oh wow, I can't believe I did this, but I had promised myself this round I'd crit everybody if I participated. I didn't know there would be so darn many though! O.o
Sorry it took so long, but it was so many to go through, it took a few days...
Disclaimer: I'm in no way a professional critic, so take my crits and comments for what they are, and with a small spoon of salt. :P Also, with that many I'm afraid I started to get crosseyed staring at them... And sorry for any writing mistakes and typos.
Part 1:
Matt Dixon - Wonderful as always. I really like the way you used colours here, gave me a little "aha!" thing. You have a fan in me. :)
jshamburger - Very fairy indeed. The white outlines comes out as a little too sharp for me when it's not a graphic thing around the whole character.
skorpi - Me like. Everything in the scene hints to a story behind it all. Her left and his right legs seems to need a lil more love though.
JOHNGRELLO - Nice touch with the hood, makes her a bit more modern. The red drapery around her hips looks a bit skewed though, like the knot is more to the front on her right side, makes it look a little weird to me.
Physicalpariah - Nice water and light coming up from underneath. I don't quite get why her hair is like that though, it should be more clear if it's in a hairdo that makes it stand up or if she's jumping down into the water making it going up like that. Her upper body is also confusing to read.
doombee - love the idea! Had to look twice before I saw the fairies in the bubbles/eggs. Really like her expression too. A little confusing where the backlight on her right side of the body comes from though, with the black ground/bottom, she ends up floating a bit in the air for me.
Marco Mazzoni - Love it. I like the scaryish fairies, and the insectoid arms with the hips and tighs made like that it makes for an original one. At first I had trouble seeing if she was flying/floating in the air or if she was totally defying gravity standing up on ground though, lol. I think that was the dark background around the feet making it hard to read for me.
Christoffer - Nice headgear, I like some big stuff on characters heads, heh. She reads as only having one wing at the middle of her back though, you would see at least a little of the other on the other side of her head if it were two. Her legs also reads like the back one comes out in front, some more work with shadows and the proportions of the legs would help that, as she is now, her right leg lifted up is a lot longer than the other one, as far
as I can see. :)
Nether - one of my favourites, I really, really like how she's humanoid even though you got out the plant and the insect aspect of her extremely well.
I am Joey-b - Her dress looked better when it was still green in your WIP. The wings are interesting though. :)
masque - Well performed as always. I have to say this one became a little too boring for me though, but that is personal taste, I kinda like the looks in the WIP's better.
FerrousJack - Pretty original take, heh. Her face looks a bit skewed to me, I think it's the eyes doing it. Like her feet and leg muscles, hehe.
D@niel - Really great job! The pattern on her body looks great and the image ties itself together in a really nice way. I feel like the hair is confusing the scene a bit being in the S-shape it is, though
Wolfentir - I liked this one right away. There's something off with her shoulders, but overall this is an image that would've gotten my vote. She doesn't read as a queen, but not all queens do, eh?
fersteger - Lovely colours, the contrast between the not so natural fairies and the rest of the image (included the queen) makes it interesting. :)
anamirela - Simple, good design, funny details. Good one. Her crown looks slightly off for me, but that mightbe the monitor playing tricks on me.
darknight - it is a bit hard to see what's in your image. I think it's partly that your anatomy is a bit weird and the very saturated colours with the black shadows. Tone down the saturation and use other colours than black in the shadows, and it'll read a lot clearer I think. The wings came out nicely, they have a leafy look :)
Artofinca - The simple colour scheme comes off very well, and draws attention in a way I like. The foot you see seems like it's a bit cramped up and the arm further away seems a bit longer than than the one closer, I think the upper arm is too long when looking at where it should attach to the shoulder? I like the design a lot.
LA-Fairy - Very nice wings. The rest of her looks a bit flat though, I think working a bit more on the shadows would've popped her out a lot more. Using a reference and see how the shadows follows the body, and how the different parts connects to each other might be an advice. That way you'll see which parts to put higher highlights on, and what should be more midtones too, right now she's overall too bright, I think? :)
revenebo - That one totally made me laugh. Very nice picture overall, looking for something to crit it would be the pattern on her dress though, I think making it follow the body more on the furthest away parts would've made forms stand ut better? I love those tiny wings on that big body, hehe.
Tommoy - Looks very otherworldly. Nice colours, nice pose. The tigh further away from us looks like it might connect a bit weird, but it might just be my eyes playing tricks on me.
naRai - Very creepy, like it a lot. The colours look great too. The lower belly reads a bit weird to me, but it's kinda nitpicking. Good work.
Kroevyn - Her dress is absolutely wonderful! I don't know if you meant for the staff to be bent a bit as it went around the back of her, but it reads as not being straight instead with a sharp bend somewhere behind her back. Great colours, I like the darker feel.
erinel - Not that much to see of her, but the image in itself comes off as nice. Her lower arm looks a little bit too long when compared to what you can see of the rest of her though.
Sekino - Simple and nice design, reads very well. I would've liked to see some mroe work on the body since the hair is more detailed, but that might be what you were aiming for.
dwinbotp - the picture grew on me, I didn't really know what ot think of it when I saw the first WIP's, heh. Nice use of colours. Everything skewing like that makes the pic look a bit "unbalanced" for me though, like it's leanning to the side.
plissken - The upper body seems better thought through than from her hips and down, I think maybe the lower part needs some more love, hehe. Very nice design though, the carved pattern gives her a woody feel.
shannanigan - Very nice image this round. :) I love the more modern/civilized take on her, and her dress is wonderful. Like a lot.
yellowrun - I really like the back legs and they have interesting design, but I think the picture overall would read better if you added some more shadow than just the shading of the one leg that you see underneath her. Some shadows following the forms and more consistent highlights would help the image. :)
Antne - The white got a little too white for me in this, it steals all the attention. The hairdo is neat and I like the exaggerated arm, even though her left one disappears in a way that's confusing, not sure if it's supposed to be behind her?
NateShaw - I very much like the owls on the chair! And her face is very expressive. Overall a nice picture, but the donkeyhead seems like it floats in the air instead of being attached to male body for me. Her horns also kind of seems to float on top of her hair instead of coming through it.
Poshspice - Another wonderful image from you, you like your girls, eh? There is a Rackham feel in there indeed. I really like her hands turning into branches. And I really love the way it's coloured.
monkeybread - I'm not quite sure what the rainbowy colour floating over her is, is it her wings? If it is, trying to make the colours shining in somewhat the same way and make it clearer for the viewer how the wings flow might be an idea. I like her feet and lower body, the whole body in itself is actually really nice. The light is somewhat off though, so her face seems to be floating in front of everything else, and it's worked on differently than the body so that even though it gets the main focus it less thought through.
IIKII - I really like her hair. If you try out that pose in front of the mirror though, I think you'll find that you'll fall on your butt. She has all her weight on the leg furthest away from us, but she can't hold it if she holds it straight in that angle. Think a bit more about gravity. :) There's also a lot of same kind of tone all over her, making some better highlights and more defined shadows would make her stand out more. The wings looks a little rushed compared to her body, they would benefit from some more work on their form and shadows/highlights as well. :) I was thinking the stuff on her arm and legs was a pattern from what we can see on her shoulder, but then it comes running down and obsucuring her hand, which is confusing me. It should be clearer if it was mud or some substance, or if it was something painted on her or in her skin.
GiantRibot - Very much like the techie approach in this one, the wings coming out like that is a nice touch. The arm that she holds around her waist confused me a bit though, it kind of looked like the lower part of it was her belt first and that the arm was cut off abruptly at the elbow.
Wingedchime - I like the plant idea a lot, the image is really pretty. The colours and the focus on the face is good, and I really love the design on the fairies or whatever those critters around her is. :)
Arthemis IX - I love it. Very clever usage of the mothpattern on the sleeves of her dress, and makes for an image that stands out among the others.
IceMoon - The dress made of butterfly wings is very pretty, but I can't stop thinking about the poor butterfly without wings, lol! The antennae is also a nice touch. Overall the image ends up a bit boring to me though, maybe more focus or details on the character would've helped it?
Crowsrock - The bird is well done, and makes for a better image. She reads as a bit flat in her face and her shoulders seems to be a bit off though. I think that might be because the light is a bit confusing, it doesn't seem to have a proper source? The upper arms, especially her left, looks too thin, and the wide shoulders make it even more so.
dirkvandulmen - I really like this one, made me smile. :) The way her dress follows the lily leaf and all the small critters around her makes for a really nice scene. It's one of my favourites, actually. Her hair/headgear seems a bit unbalanced though, like it's leaning to one side.
benu - Very nice design, I like the creepy aspect. It kind of seems like the two wings are attached at different points on the shoulders though? The wings themselves are really nice though.
Windsrock - There seems to be a little too much going on in the picture, I think the wings would've benefited with being treated like you've done with the stuff floating from her fingers. Now they look rough and unfinished, and the harsh thick lines doesn't really help in reading how they are either. Interesting dress.
Mitze - I actially like the yellow version of her dress best, at least from what I can see on the WIPs you posted, heh. The image is really nice though, and the wings are awsome. what gets the most love from me is the ferrets though, lol! I love them! :D
amaliax - I like her face, and her hair looks really nice. Her wings looks a bit unsure if they should be see through, glowy or solid though, heh. I thought they were glowy see through but then I couldn't see the furthest away wing through the closest one. I think the picture would be a lot better if you changed the wings or worked some more on them, to me she looks like she's gotten a lot more painterly love than the wings, at least. :)
Pixeltuner - Nice one, love the hair and headgear. Her feet looks like they are a lot bigger and solid than what you'd expect from a fairy queen, but I like them nonetheless, heh.
Franna - I was a bit sceptical when I first saw the WIP for this one, but it turned out being one of my favourites. Great concept, great image, and the only robot, hehe. Only crit would be that her feet seems to have been rushed a bit more than the rest of her?
Zilrion - Nice, easy to read picture. Her tummy/hip/butt/tighs seems to connect a bit weird though. Her tighs rounds up to the butt where her hips starts, and it confuses the body a lot. My eyes keep wanting to either cut off the back part and most of her butt to make her super skinny, or add a lot more flesh to her arms and tighs.
Bugmeyer - killer perspective! And I love the wings. Not much to say other than that I like the image a lot, and that you went the insectoid route.
Lammashta - Nice more modern feel with the boots. The wings confuses me though, are they connected maybe a little bit too low? I actually think that your WIP looks a bit better than your finished one, but it has a nice graphic touch to it when using the colours like that.
Angel Intheuk - Very nice dress and a nice touch with the snake as a pet. Overall it ends up reading a bit flat for me though, I think it's the massive white dress doing it when it's define more. Like the headgear. :)
Kitten Poker - Nice glow, like the wings. She doesn't seem to be sitting in the flowerranks though, her weight would've been distributed a little differet (try to sit down in a similar pose yourself and you'll see) and the ranks would've been a little more stretched, at least a few main strands of it.
Nightblue - Very nice roses there, they set a good mood for the rest of the picture. I find the wings the most interesting with the character.Overall a nice clean pic. :)
Dan! - Well, she can't see, hope she has some helpers or good echoing skills. ;) The hood over her eyes makes her different, I like that. The wings together with the feathers around her neck confuse me a little though. Overall good work as usual, the colours are wonderful. :)
hunchback - Nice moody colours. Her leg seems off though, it's hard to see which leg it's supposed to be. Right now it looks to me like it's her right, and that her tigh comes out from the hip under there, being too short with a twisted knee.
Graphuji - Nice graphic feel. Her legs and feet looks like they're too small compared to the rest of her body though. Slimming the shoulder area would've helped too, as right now it seems she has very little hips. The breasts could also have been a little smoother put on, right now they read as half balls, while if you look at a women, they're seldom that shape unless they've had excessive surgery. ;)
Vorace - Lovely as always, I tend to like your stuff a lot, don't know why, hehe. The wings in her hair is a nice touch. The third ear confuse me a bit though. :P
dragon4lunch - Nice colours, but her face/head looks somewhat off or not quite finished? In the first WIP you have a lot more dynamic pose.
bluefooted - love your stuff as always. The moth was a very good idea. And her dress is beautiful.
sticmann - Some of the details are really, really good, and the colour choice in the jewelry and the key looks great. Her face seems a bit skewed to me though, I think it's the ear furthest away that makes it looks weird, almost like her face is broader where it's just naked face than where her hair is.
Jason Strutz - Colours exploded somewhere nearby you? Hehe, love the colours, and the donkeys face is awsome. Really great, even though I can't help but think she must have a lot of neckpain carrying that on her head. :P
Grendel Grack - The wings like that is a great touch and makes her different. And that it flows together with the dress like that making it almost as one is sweet. :)
Sulk-Sal - Her pose looks a bit stiff, and I think you've gotten some crit already about the feet coming towards you. I really like the pencil drawing though, and there everything is supposed to be a bit greyish - the colours put on lack some.
openanewworld - Gives me a nice dryad feeling. I especially like the hair and the colours are great. The picture kind of makes you calm at the same time she's appearantly no laying on the sofa getting fed grapes kind of queen.
trevor - my absolute favourite of all this round. The creatures are awsome, but the queen herself is really something otherwordly. I'd have that on my wall if I could for sure!

MJ Alcazar - Still progressing very well. This one came out a little dark though, your highlights are really subdued. Nice to see that you implemented the Indian boy too. Your faces are getting better and better and the light in this one looks good. :)
Nutter - Horns! And the feel of her wings is really good too, I almost want to reach out and touch them. You say you rushed it in the end, and I kinda wish you'll post it again doing what you feel was lacking, since I get the feeling it's a little unfinished myself. :)
dayz - Very nice idea, almost an arabic feel to her with the fabric over her head like that. As the fabric flows out into the air it gets a bit too muddied for me though, I'd like to see you either go more graphic with it or more rendered.
careless - Beautiful, very serene. Not much to say about this one, her "lounging" like that and staring at you makes me think of older paintings. :)
AhChu - Some parts of her dress reads very well, while others come off as flat, due to the difference in the shadows/highlights. The fabric over her bosom comes off as nice thick silk, while the fabric on her arms and her legs even though same colour looks very flat and not rendered.
grenogs - First thing I focused on was those weird bumblebeeish things instead of her, hehe, like them a lot. The colours could need a little more livening up though.
ikuru - I like the way you paint, and the small figures in the background makes for a nice touch. Not much to say, other than that the furthest back leg looks better in the versions where she doesn't have a dress, her pose isn't that selfexplainatory when you dress her.
cyc - Her wings and hair looks like they got a little more love than her body. When the water ripples like that her water reflection will never be straight like that though, it would follow the ripples.
Duq - Nice one, Duq :) She looks a bit stiff, and I find that your sketches with the little fairy and the light around it looks more interesting in your earlier WIPs, I like the colours better there too.
Felida - Lots of stuff going on in here, really like the scene. The fox could maybe have some more detail work and shadows though. I really like it there so I'd like to see it make more out of itself :)
Dead Clown - The wings looks great, nice. The crown looks a bit skewes to me though and the shine in her hair looks like the back of her head is a bit flat.
Jeremy Hoffman - Too bad it ended up cropped. I really love the whole thing though, from the little gnomes facial expression and her funny face to the little fairy on her shoulder. Like the wooden feel of her body too. Crown is great. :)
jpedro - very nice pose. The body ends up looking a little bland compared to the face though. I wish you'd done more so the body popped more out of the picture, because it is really nice. right now it melts into the background a bit too much for me.
Wunderdark - Different take, fairy queen of death. Her breasts looks a bit odd though, they attract attention because they're light, but ends up looking a bit "stiff" in lack of a better word, heh.
Hideyoshi - Beautiful. Not much to crit here at all, she's really original and the background is interesting. Me like.
Amedyr - Hehe, queen of the nerds, eh? Great with some more humorous takes on the subject as well. Not much to crit really, maybe the leg furthest away from us on the nerd could've needed some more darks, right now the light makes it look like it's bent weird?
yoitisi - Sweet. Something looks a bit off on her tigh, not quite sure what it is though. Also the foot she stands on looks awkward, and a bit small? Her dress looks really good, and the little satyr or what it is adds a really nice touch. :)
DecayingLolita - Very nice colourwise. And I like her design, different from some of the other stuff I've seen from you. The shoulder looks a bit flat, but very nice entry.
deadred - Right up my alley, and I just totally love that big bad bunny. But you know I like your stuff already, heh.
Sorknes - You look familiar.... Kinda sad I didn't have the time to finish the arms and fix the shoulder/upper arm area.
Ciaee - Welcome, you sure made an impact from your first post, hehe. It's a stunning picture, I'm trying to find out why I like it so much, but not sure, hehe. And the donkeyhead with her totally innocent-ish is well done. Love it. very dreamy and otherwordly.
Sentinel13 - Great entry, and her body comes off as very well done. Nice to see not only skinny fairies too. ;) Beautiful, and the bird is lovely.
Jefita - I'm wondering if that's the Indian boy or some other character. Very nice, her face and body is stunning, but what really makes it is the craetures behind in the dark, for me. The boy looks a little unfinished to me compared to the rest of the pic though.
Quinn Simoes - Another dark one. :) Her wings being leafy is a nice touch, but they look a bit too much different from the rest of her, like they don't really belong. I like the rest of her though.
When it came to who I wanted to vote for, I wanted to vote for almost all. So I ended up deciding who I like the absolutely most and vote for that. And I ended up with Trevor. :) I have a kind of aversion against fairies that's all bright and good, so I like the darker ones, hehe.
Tell me if I forgot anyone!

masque - Well performed as always. I have to say this one became a little too boring for me though, but that is personal taste, I kinda like the looks in the WIP's better.Another crazy person diving off the C&C deep end! :D Truly, though, thanks for your perseverance in doing so.
In many ways I agree with you, the edgy graphic look of the initial sketches was lost, but I'm not yet at a point with that drawing style to carry it from B&W to fully-rendered color image, at least not with any real confidence. So I wussed out a bit and fell back on my usual "performance" (about which I appreciate the comment, btw). But it is a goal to develop a "look" that incorporates that faux-brushwork stroke into more fully-developed images. I need to spend more time with that, since it seems to be more appealing than my more "old-school" painting techniques.

Very, very nice stuff here again!
Voted for
Arthemis IX: Love the design of the butterfly/moth gown!
Ciaee: I find the cool colour palette very fitting. The eyes are quite compelling and made me look twice.
fersteger: Lovely dreamlike look.
Bluefooted: Gorgeous selection of colours here. Dig the way the night sky and the starlight blend into her character. The painting has a cold and yet comforting feel; hard to explain. I like the design of her winged steed very much as well - it reminds me of the Landstriders from 'The Dark Crystal'.
poshspice: Superbly executed, amazing ink and watercolour look.
openanewworld: This is my favourite for two reasons: The moonlight is just perfect for this amazing deep forest setting. Titania seems human at first, but a closer look reveals her chilling otherworldliness.

Any futher coments would be greatly appreciated.
