Gary Kelley received his degree in art from the University of Northern Iowa, began his career as a graphic designer and art director before becoming an illustrator in the mid-1970's. He has received awards from the New York Society of Illustrators including the Hamilton King Award in 1992, National Booksellers Association, Print Magazine, New York Art Directors Show, Los Angeles Society of Illustrators,Bologna (Italy) Book Fair, and others. His clients include NewYorker Magazine, Rolling Stone, Playboy, Atlantic Monthly, Time, Newsweek, GQ, Franklin Library, CBS Records, NFL, Santa Fe Opera, and many major publishers and advertising agencies.

He recently completed two 70-foot murals for the renovated Barnes and Nobel Bookstore on 5th Avenue at 48th Street in New York City. In addition to his professional work, he has lectured widely, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., Society of Illustrators, San Francisco Academy of Art, Ringling School of Art, and Syracuse University, to name just a few.

Gary was a big influence on me as well. He was making it as an independent artist and doing it his way. He is an excellent teacher, no doubt.

A very inspiring and educational video!

mister Kelley confidently guides us through an organic and intuitive process, constantly experimenting and refining while expertly maintaining the conceptual integrity of the illustration.

my only "grievance" is the camera work. even though i absolutely understand the difficulties involved with setting something like this up, i think the manchess video succeeded far better at letting us get up close and actually see the pigments being put down. this video suffers a bit from the camera being positioned at very sharp angles a lot of the time.

Help needed to know how to add images on this site!

Pastels are an excellent way to learn how to handle color beyond just mixing whatever you need from paint, the limitation of having only so many colors means you make choices ahead of time, learning to place colors.

In essence, it's very much like limited palette painting, which is great for learning.

Thankyou for Posting the Demo, in school my class had to try and decipher is pastel and oil rub/colored pencils methods. Now I can see the Pastel method, am very happy. I graduated from Ringling, but never attended the Illustration academy due to lack of funds.
