Any critiques would be really great. Does someone know how I can adjust the levels to make the scan look more like a pencil drawing rather than looking like a pen drawing.

Hey Hey, no hate here kiddo.
As far as the levels go i couldnt really help ya much. When you do scan u if u have a custom settings or option button. Then try and play around in there. Look at everything within the program that changed the pic. play for 20 minutes and if what ur looking for is there im sure u'll find it..
As far as the sketches , yea i thought they were pen til u said something.
But u have some very good conceptualism and a sense of mood in several. Would love to see a fully rendered piece. or even one in color. KEEP POSTING. trust me theres alot of ppl here that keep up their sbooks. its an awesome thing. reply to some peoples and keep updating ur own and u'll get replies. Thanks for posting. - Chudds

this is some good stuff. As far as scanning goes, your contrast is up too high. Before you scan, take the contrast down, which may be in the form of "exposure", "shadows", "highlight", "gamma", etc. kick the contrast down and it should look more like pencil.... you could also do that in Photoshop, but it's better to do it before you scan it in. It's all lookin' great though. keep it up. Peace

wow that is soooo awsome. I dunno WHY people arent postin here. Maybe they need more time. DUDE how do you do your shading. I really could use tips. Can you post your reply in my sketchpad (obid619's sketchad) please? I think your art is pretty influenced by a certain game....hehe (half life 2) G i wonder where i got that idea? :D :machinegu

No, we were thinking of something team based like team fortress, but with a post apocalyptic feel to it. Or something like the old X-COM games except, first person shooter, still team based.
Yea my buddy showed me the leaked alpha, it was pretty sweet for a while, then it just got boring.

It was pretty cool at first..there is AI, and a few maps, but god theres no point to everything in the alphaleak, no story, nothing. So basically you just play around with the physics and shoot things...that gets boring. But im very confident that the real game will absolutely rock.

very very nice. You are good. But one thing that came in really handy for me is 'finish your pieces'. It is always good to force yourself to do the absolute best you can do in every one of your sketches (except if your just trying to get a basic idea down) because that really drags some drawing skills in.
Keep posting. IŽll be back.

Heya,
Very good style - you create good "moody" feeling in your work. (bear with me, I'm not properly caffinated yet). I like the sketchy style, but I agree with talmir that it would be nice to see some finished (or close to finished works here).
I think it would also be good to see some other subjects as well, but that's just me.
All in all, very good schtuff. High marks!

December 18th, 2003, 09:21 PM
eh i'll disagree with the above.. i think its just dandy and fine to rough out an idea so u remember what u were thinking.. atleast when dealing with conceptual art... as long as u do finish one occasionally.. then sketching a ton of half stuff that u have a more elaborate image of in your mind. is fine.. i think.. in my mind it is. good stuff .. cya latr - chudds

I do have a tedency to have incomplete sketches, thank you for all your suggestions and comments, i think i will work on these, however I am currently trying to finish all the requirements for Art Center and RISD, especially with only 2 months left till I have to apply to RISD.

hmm these are pretty nice... but its hard to tell whats going on in them once you go past the head areas... the arms especially.. make more of a distinction of the various parts.. you can either darken, put more detail, vary the linework, whatever fits your style more.. you're on your way though.. you'll be real good in a couple years if you keep it up..

thx for the suggestion main loop, yea ive already gotten started working on these sketches again, usually i draw sketches for the reason that chudtza stated to get a basic idea down so that later i am able to go into more detail on the ideas i like.

hey, i feel your pain about drawing the bike that thing is driving me crazy.... any ways about your figure drawins i really like your line and your shading, but the things you really need to work on are your proportions... just for an example take the first figure drawing there, the proportion between the head and the her thigh is way off. try using comparitive measurments when drawings it acc helps allot, the second thing to try to work on is to remeber to draw the hands and feet in every figure, schools like to see that in figure drawings. well best a luck to you in your application.

thank you for your critique, i just started figure drawing about two months ago, the large ones were 20 mins most of the time i have to rush i dont really know why my teacher only doesnt go pass 20 mins, but its ok i guess. I really appreciate your suggestions and I'll definitely work on these.

F-
Nice stuff! You've got a strong foundation for starting in a design program.
I'd suggest punching up the chest/facial regions on some of the soldiers - the lack of contrast and definition lets the shapes blur together and washes out the details (which look pretty cool, just undefined).

Thank you tsgilbert, im really really glad you like my work.
Ill definitely work on the contrast and definition in my work.
Thank you for replying so quickly to my post, I'm really worried about acceptance right now, but your reassurance will ease me for about the next 10 hours :D

famboozle your answer lies in wait in George B. Bridgeman's book, "Drawing from Life: over a 1,000 illustrations." I also recommended this book in my thread. It may be old, but it is like vintage. Buy it NOW!. from skeletones to muscles, to section of the body, to folds, and to shading, this book covers it ALL. I'm still waiting for my copy to come by soon

YOUR LINES ARE GORGEOUS!!!!!!!! you have an amazing hand when it comes to mark making. but the forms are still coming up somewhat ambiguous and flat in places. also make sure you're checking your proportions and scale of body parts to eachother (the scouts hands are really small)
but the marker and pen stuff is to die for. you've really got some potential, the only thing i'd say is to supplement this work with just straight realist figure drawing and you'll definatly blow up the spot...
very nice work

Thanks obid619 for suggesting the book, Ive actually been looking at it at my public library for the past couple of days studying the anatomy.
Thanks jarvis2824, im trying to fix the balance of the pictures on paper, i think that guys leg is a bit too stiff.
Thank you so much for the wonderful comments siskol p, yea I took this one anatomy class for about 3 months, to prepare stuff for my portfolio, i had to stop because of school.

hey tommy,
Very nice thread you got going here - like the style of mech and shading, it's like everyone has said very unique.
My advice- spend some time just focused on human anatomy. They structure, the way people stand, the way people balance, all that jazz. Because its nice to have that down before you start putting on layers of armor and mech. It will give your figures a more balanced natural and fluid look.
keep it up.
