Hello there,

nice stuff. maybe push your values more though. some of your work looks like it doesn't have the weight it should have and some things look slightly off because of it. but really, nice.
also, even though they're studies, maybe focus on the page composition a bit more. keep it up =)

The nose/mouth and the drapes are the best ones here for the examples of values. Applying what you did to those to the rest will improve the feel for the future studies. ;)

A2 you say? You're the man now, dog!
But seriously, nice work, hope you have the discipline and right degree of self critique to work on your own, I'm finding it tough but rewarding.
Then again, I've never actually had any (serious) instruction at all so yeah.

I think your work looks great. I'm working to get to the same level as you. Great job. http://g09k0221lebj272.imageshacknow.info/img/3203/b09r0222yrxi/happy0025.gif

Unbelievable pencil work--your line control is superb. I'd love to see a few charcoal pieces with the same degree of sensitivity if that's something you're interested in.

Hey,
I checked your sketchbook and this thread after you posted a drawing of me in the Draw from 'What does everyone look like?' thead :P
But where are your latest works?
You are very talented, your work is very realistic, I want to see more! :)
What pencil do you use for your pencil drawings? HB?
If it's HB or harder, you might try a 2B or 4B pencil :). Your drawings will get more contrast then.

Don't stop crosshatching, it's waaaay more beautiful than smudging :P
I think I felt in love with the first portraits contours too. Beautiful girl.
I never had the courage to try oil paints... maybe I should do it though. Those paintings are very cool, beautiful colours! :^^:
Oh, and I don't know anything about an Europe workshop thingie. Maybe I should ask Noë about it, because i think she goes too.
If it's not very high priced, I might go too :^^:.

Great looseness and nice oils - the only thing I dislike is that you do not focus on the form - mostly copies of light and shade. Especially if you have your own cast - don't set up a specific spotlight, just mark the plane changes on the sculpt with a piece of charcoal, or if you for some reason cant mark the sculpt - go and feel with your fingers.
Then you disregard the seen light and shade, and you draw the form - WITHOUT CAST SHADOWS!!!!!
Cast shadows were invented by the devil - they destroy the beautiful form(which was created by God!).
You decide your own light sources and simply imagine what planes are light and what planes are in shade. Think more like a computer, draw with your mind.
You wanna model the edges - plane changes. This will give the feeling of 3d. The turn of plane is where the shade goes.
And for God sake use a 100% dark and a 100% light. Use the 3plane technique - one plane is 100% light - the other 50%/50% and the last 100% dark(though it wont reach 100, only its edge)
And all the inbetween form changes follows this general setup.
After a year or two of this - you can do cast shadows, but your own constructed cast shadows that follow the form - check out Bouguereau he does this the best.
DRAW!

Hey man great work once again. Love the eye in that boy. And your lines are good.
I like cast shadows as well - the general problem is that it is perhaps the most difficult thing to get right - so the strict renaissance school of drawing doesn't use it in the beginning. Because if one does not understand the underlying planes 100% it is impossible to get right. And when used they are always constructed, not copied.
The most amazing thing is that you can get a good drawing without a single cast shadow. (although it might not look realistical)
All right I'll keep my eye on you - it seems like you are going in the right direction, thogh I'd really suggest you focus more on pure form. (although it might seem boring and give unrealistic results)
