SUPER Stylised Challenge - February 2009 - Cyclops

Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread.

IMPORTANT: By entering this challenge you give 3DTotal.com Ltd. permissions to reproduce the submitted material in 2DArtist Magazine and all subsequent editions of the Work (by which we mean 2DArtist), its ancillaries, and other derivative works, in any form or medium, whether now known or hereafter developed, in all languages, for distribution throughout the world. 3DTotal.com Ltd will credit each artist accordingly, providing they email lynette@3dtotal.com with their full name, conceptart.org name, email address and website (if applicable).

Please avoid going down the route of the X-Men Cyclops character or any other existing cyclops characters - please go for something new and original to avoid any issues with copyrights!

So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, paint it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!

This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!

What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!

What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com) and we'd like the winner's image to be used as the article cover!

NEW: Please aim to create your final images, and save your WIPS, at resolutions of around 2000 pixels upwards, to ensure that when you images are published they are high quality. Any screebshots are understandably going to be screen resolution (72dpi), so simply capture those as large as you can when saving out your WIP stages.

There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.

For a valid entry, you must make sure your final image is posted in both the WIP thread before the end of the month - 31st February 11:59PM GMT - and then in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th March 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th March to the 15th March 2008, when the winners will be announced!

We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!

Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline (31st February 11:59PM GMT), as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging!

Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!

Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!

We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!

i don't know if this falls between the parameters of the contest.. i also don't know what i'm doing! wasn't too inspired with this month's so i found a way to keep me interested.

the mask was my brother's. used. he got his bell rung once with it on and it didn't do shit to protect him. so he just gave it to me. it was chipped from the shot. i probably should have sanded it before i primed it. not sure if i used the right kind of paint either.

the first pic is pencil marks drawn on and the second is rough outlines with those waterbased sharpie paint markers. i'm gonna use them for the whole thing then clear coat the shit outta it. i think this will be a decorative mask. #a. its flimsy as hell #b. i am not confident this paint is gonna stick well. does anyone know anything about this?

Hi

liransz, oooh creepy girl, love the bunny.
the_original_sean, I've done a bit of bike graphics, check out my mates GSXR1100
that I did a few years ago. I use Liquitex Acrylics for a nice flat finish
airbrush gets great results and make sure you finish with 5 - 10 layers of Lacquer.
Your Cyclops face is great though.

I've decided to do a baby cyclops who has telekinetic powers controlled by his third/one eye.

Here's my sketches so far:

http://www.biscuitofdoom.net/Forum/baby_cyclops_sketches_09.jpg

I like the one thats kind of looking down on him (top right) but i'm having trouble with the perspective on it. Aside from that I like the one of him with the one eyed teddy. Any suggestions are welcome!

rosatron: Love it! It's cute and funny and the colours are great! :)

artina: I like your initial idea! I look forward to seeing it developed.

Urih_pta2: Good start! Love his expression!

Macaruba: Really like your sketches, and I think you picked the right one to develop. That was my favourite one :)

Chate Noire: Nice sketch ideas your developed piece is looking good!

the_original_sean: Original idea! I like how the helmets looking so far.

liransz: Good concept! It has a kind of creepy feel to it which i like.

Cookiedough, funny idea :)

Macaruba, wow, cool job on the bike. you know your craft! the gent-cyclop reminds me of Abe Lincoln.

blackcherry, i'd go with the one in the bottom row, centre-right, pointing and smiling.

ChateNoire, the sketches all have great character and expression. i kindof would have loved to see you go for one of the business guys, specially the top right one is so funny, looks like a really unsure/insecure insurance salesman. they are a bit less conventional as well. awesome stuff overall though :tihi:

there's some great ideas so far this month.

macaruba- two great entries, you seem quite taken with this one. monocle + cyclops is a great concept.

Chate Noire- i really liked all of your initial sketches. you chose a good one to develop too.

jpedro- your cyclops hoodlums have a lot of personality. very strong characters. i can't wait to see the finished product. the mohawk on the tall one seems a tad off kilter to me tho.

Its taken me a while to get in on this one due to an onslaught of work but i finally got a little time to get a start. when i was trying to think of something that would be funny to do with a cyclops i had trouble at first, then i had the idea of having a two headed cyclops. something about a cyclops character that has two eyes but not on the same head seemed funny to me so that's what i went with. I'd love to get some feedback on the character or concept if anyone has any thoughts.

when i read the cyclops theme i couldnt think of anything cyclopsian that wasn't perverted. (she had a beautiful brown eye, one eyed purple yogurt slinger, what have you) so i got no tasteful advice for you, r marz. oh wait, what if the two headed guy is doin the stooge eye gouge? Nice ideas here.

Macaruba - nice take on monocle! clever! I personally like the cybot attack more. has a retro 'alien invasion' feel to it. i'd like to see this as a final also!

Chate - nice character sketches, really lovin these. The painted version is good too. Tho i was hoping to see the 'cyclops@work with the brief case painted also..haha that one was my favourite sketch of yours.

Cookiedough - really like your style.

Urih - i like the way you painted the face. great stuff so far.

Man this vote is going to be hard. i will post my sketches up tonight or in the next few days.

Hi
Here is my finished Cyclopsian Gent with borders inspired by Alphonse Mucha in a Victorian style.

The_original_Sean: you're doing well with your lid graphics.
Urih_pta2: Great facial expression, a tad predictable maybe!
artina: Love the concept, one small crit - try to separate the character texture from the background texture.

I developed some of my sketches for this topic, and finally picked one. Out of these two i'm going with the one on the left.

Got my hands on Illustrator recently too so i've experimented with inking my idea on that. This is what I've got so far.

Need to get it coloured and develop the background now but haven't decided how i want it to look yet. Hmmm...

Macaruba: Love your cyclopsian gent, he looks awesome! I really liked the robot too :)
artina: I like how yours has developed. Your poster style idea reminds me of something but I can't place what. Did you bade it on something? I like the texture on it too. Are you using Photoshop or Illustrator, or both?

diegosanchez i like the initial sketch, the angles make it look nice and bulky. check out the raised knee. when you compare the space between the boot and the knee on his extended leg with the raised one, doesnt add up.

heres an update on my mask. just to clarify, miss lynette, does this count?

Hmmmmmmmm, tricky one! I'm going to have to say no, I'm sorry. What I can say yes to though is if you take your concept of the cyclops helmet into an illustration, as that would then be on brief. For example, why not paint a character wearing the helmet you've designed?

Here's my finished entry. Running low on time again so I doubt i'll get much chance to do anymore to it.

http://www.biscuitofdoom.net/Forum/baby_cyclops_09.jpg

the_original_sean: Your finished helmet looks awesome :)
The Antarctican: Great piece! Love the design and idea!
Ostrander: Really like the style and black linework.
Urih_pta2: Love the expression on your cyclops! Great colouring and lighting too.
ircha: Nice piece. I particularly like the background texture
Oritey: Love the door idea with the eye peep hole, its cool :) The damage on and around it is a nice touch too. It definately works better without the kids.
gnahz: Simple but effective, i really like the style and idea. I like the textured background too. Did you use a brush to create it?
