Lovely theme... I still have to think about my own interpretation of "faeries" but this definitely will be fun *__*
Thanks to term break, I'll definitely will have time to participate! (Has to develope her digital painting skills).

@Joey-b: Good start. But at the moment, she looks more like a beauty queen than the wonderful and dangerous queen of the faeries :)
@Gothique: This sounds exiting and it definitely will be a lot of work.

@Daestwen: Is it allowed to add Oberon somewhere?

Lunchtime roughs. Going traditional, fairy wise that is...

Edit01: Playing with colour using texture overlays, Just an experiment but it gets a watercoloury feel. I'll probably go with the one on the left. Using a texture Bluefooted pointed me toward ages ago and a few of my own.

Edit02: Well, it looks like I'm working this one up for now. Progress of roughing the linework. I'll probably do another tidy up before doing the colour very much similar to the test earlier but with more detail.

Edit03: Still working on the line... Changed her proportions slightly. She's making fairies! It might over-complicate things though... not decided yet.

Removed the last edit, to put in this one. Line almost finished. Just tidying up now. Still not sure about the little fairies, but I'll leave them in for now. I wish I'd started this in pencil now rather than digital.

Edit04: A bit of colour... sort of. Not really representative of how it will end up, but I'm experimenting with a watercolour look.

Edit05: Final

Oooooh ;P Brilliant topic choice - I'm in on this one too

Great idea's so far...Like yours Posh, both really beautiful, the one on the left looks more coniving and Titania-like than the one on the right...but I love the pose of the one on the right. can't wait to see more.

And a really bad scan of the sketchbook page I made to develope the character:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f44/felida99/DigitalArtForum/ktitaniasketch2.jpg
I like the face on the top a lot. The body sketches where made to find a queen-like pose for the final illustration but they doesn't look royal enough...

I tried to go a not really traditional with the design. She only wears wood, spider webs and bird feathers. The crown should remind of a snail-shell and I think she'll get dragonfly wings.

@Espenbuy: Reminds me a little bit on Holly Short from Artemis Fowl.
@Poshspice: Beautiful sketches. Really traditional. I like the left one a little bit more.
@Joey-b: Awesome hair and a really evil face.

:scribble: Sorry this is so sketchy, I'm having to sneak lines in between doing real work. Ok, the concept is this: The year is 1917 and the fairy kingdom is finally spurred to respond to the conflagration engulfing the continent. Queen Titania mobilizes her forces and joins the fight on the side of the Entente vowing to give the Kaiser what for.

I feel like I'm going back to my roots with this one. I drew all kind of fairies when I was a kid. And instead of coming up with some crazy awesome off-the-wall innovation, I wanted to go with something closer to what I think Titania might really be like. Which is boring, but I don't wanna make her mad by making her look bad.

This is a really raw sketch, because I have to go to work.

I got a lot of fun producing sketches :D.

Quite lovely! Don't forget to do the full 3/4 view. I don't want you to be kicked out because your character is too small!

great topic!
This is my sketch... I want her to be very hmmm..unaffected, wild and powerful;) Its the moment of her awakening:)

Her nipples look too far apart. The perspective is off, so you may want to work on it a bit more before going to the final drawing. Her chin is too close to her neck. Extend it out a bit more so you can see more of her neck. Her arms appear too big for her body. I think you really have something there, so keep plugging away! Good luck

I I wanted to go with something closer to what I think Titania might really be like. Which is boring, but I don't wanna make her mad by making her look bad.
This is a really raw sketch, because I have to go to work.

Hate to tell you this but her butt is too big. It's up too high. She's beautiful so far. Good luck.

an so it is said
the tooth fairy, tired of giving away money,
led a revolt of all the sprite races against mankind
wanted to take a darker approach to this
45 minute lunch doodle
no detail yet but its as blocked in as it needs to be for now
i may draw it back just a little more so i can put in some small goblins or more grotesque sprites and larger insects
i would like to push this into more of a horror feel (not slasher just scary)

all the little draperies and metal bits are looking great too
i would suggest using some reference on the face and hands tho as they arent up to the same quality as the rest yet

loving the tubby faerie
only thing bugging me is the fact that the color is so straight out of the tube so to speak
maybe narrow down the larger areas of you pallette a bit and save all the crazy colors for detail work and to direct the eye?

Trevor, im blown away. dude, you are such a big inspiration to this art community!! :D

--------------

so my concept is fairly simple, year 2200 something something... the police force consists only of fairies, there are evil tooth monsters, hehe not shaped like tooths, probably big muscular guys with shark mouths.

in my final illustration im going to try and capture the Fairy Queen and her police soldiers, on a raid something something... gotta lotta to work out still ;P

here's a sketch of a G.U.I.L.T.Y soldier, which is the queens troopers. ;P

Yet another fun round. I'm liking some of the alternative interpretations.

Nothing so interesting from my coffee break doodle. Playing it pretty straight, but trying to get some subtle otherworldliness into the design and mood.

I was thinking of John Harrold's Rupert annual endpaper illustration, 'Nutwood Night Class (http://www.bookpalace.com/acatalog/HarroldNight.jpg)', while I scribbled this up. Might go down that road for palette if I can find the time to take this any further.

I decided to go the illustrative and classic way. No Oberon but Puck :D Is it allowed to draw such a scene for a CHOW?
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f44/felida99/DigitalArtForum/CHOW146TitaniaLayoutKopie.jpg

What do you think about the composition? Is the scene clear? Colors are still preally rough but do they fit?

Thank a lot for the comment, trevor. I already searched for some references (for the pose, the face and the fox, also some flowers, wings and stumps). I hope, I can keep up with the detais also in the final piece. But there's still a lot of time, isn't it XD

good start so far christoffer, liking some of the smaller detail you got going. quick tip for you, try not working with a pure white background, try a more mid tone, it'll make light and dark shading more accurate early on, and less colour adjustments later on. Also make your top and bottom borders longer, at the moment she looking slightly boxed in.

Thanks for the nice comments. My Titania is done. I wait for the final burning thread to appear now, right?

John Grello - Really liking your last update. My only comment would be that her costume seems feels like it's been borrowed from a Dungeons and Dragons adventurer ( I think it's all the pouches, belts and other dangly bits ) and doesn't project much of a 'queen' vibe. Perhaps that's just how she rolls though. Looking forward to seeing it progress!

Trevor - Looking very cool. Groovy composition.

Christoffer - Strange mismatches in her costume. The dress feels quite formal, yet those belts look very goth / street. Maybe repeat a single strong shape or motif throughout her outfit to give things a bit more rhythm? Not good practice to start painting your character up without knowing what you're doing in the background - if she's going to be in a scene of some kind that'll influence the colour and light falling across her and make it difficult for you to finalise the rendering on the figure, or cause you to rework it once the background goes in. It'd be a good idea to resolve that before going much further I think.

Felida - I like the picture book feel of yours. I don't know if you're intending to keep that ink and wash look in the final, but it's a very promising start.

Shaping up to be a great round!

Joey-b:nice work.you need to show the left leg(at least in shadows)

Gothique:too early stage to make a comment but, i like the idea of a big scale titania.the tree like figure is nice.

Poshspice:great figures! yes the left one is more interesting.the experiment with colours is very good.the theme could benefit from such loose aproach(a more ethereal look i guess) waiting for the final!

Espenboi:nice aproach.a diferent kind of fairy.

FerrousJack:good movement on the background figures.not to sure about Titania legs, though(specially the right...i think prevents the movement instead of pushing forward) update is looking very good

ticktocker:nice figure.the feet lokks a bit bigger than should be in relation to the rest of the body.

amaliax:is nice. a more queen look.

trevor:i like the mood of the piece.and the colours are working very well since the first stage.

Tipa:nice movement. the head is too small

dirkvandulmen:a diferent aproach on the character.nice

pixeltuner:very nice character. i like the face and the design.the right arm is a bit short and the legs are a bit long in my opinion.waiting for the final. edit:rework is much better. very good

masque:very interesting. i like the design and the minimalist aproach

Novbert:nice figure, i think the head need more volume to the top and back part

Graphuji:the mask could be a good design part if it shows some kind of "personality" right now is a bit blank. i don't know, i think in this topic the face is important in a way. but is just my opinion.

Monika Gruzka:nice idea about the tree roots.keep an eye on the breast form and the light source.

Tatiana:i like the face on the first one but i like the body and gesture of the second

hunchback:i like the figure gesture.draw the feet to know exactly how tall she is and how would be the stand of the character(later on could be a really trouble) the expression of the face is very nice.

physicalpariah:keep an eye on the proportions.also the upper body its seems to be not cprrectly attached to the hips.nice idea with image.

Nutter:very nice work.she looks for sure diferent.im wonder if she can be reader as a fairy with that kind of winds?(i don't have a clue about fantastical creatures)

blackrobin:nice image.i like the face.keep it up

shannanigan:nice take on the subject. nice idea

Nightblue:good work so far.i think her left hand is a bit small.

Baxter-e:i like your idea of a more hybrid fairy.the body looks a bit short

JOHNGRELLO:great work.love the figure.(the second one is very good too,but i really like the feel of the first one) im trying to work is greyscale to add colour later too...im not doing good so far

T Turill:nice sketches so far.the one with the arms above of the head is very good...very nice expression.

3vil:very nice. the thing with the gesture is what she is doing...is pointing for anything in particular?she is giving an order to someone? there is a reason for she been on the right of the image leaving so much negative space? just a grain of salt

Matt Dixon:love the composition and colours. very good

LA-Fairy:i think that working in small scale could hekp you to visualize those proportions problems and fix it. draw severl thumbs to see which one portrait your idea in the best way.then you could take the small sketch ans scale it to the final size, then painting on top.

Artofinca:nice Titania.it looks more creature.nice work

fersteger:i like the feel and the coulours pallete. maybe add somenthing to show she is a fairy and not a regular lady? i don't know. good work so far.

Felida:i like it. i think the colours work fine(the cat seems a bit lost with Titania, though) nice design on the character.

grenogs:i like the scene.more variation in the colours? the background could be less darker in the inferior part i think(or maybe a more sorter transition?)

Christoffer:nice costume.the neck is abit rigid i think

Windsrock:the body seems to be a bit thin...it looks almost plane.i like the face.

Ikuru:nice start.the creatures behind are very nice.

WunderDark:nice design and details.not too sure if she reads as a female(im not saying that she needs to be a model or a beauty)specially since you made her very thin almost like a skeleton...of course this is is just my opinion.

ok i think i get all the entries.

Joey-b: I like her wings and the background you're developing. Her balance seems slightly off tho.

Posh Spice: I like the pose in the first sketch better, but I like the idea of the finger twigs too.
The textured sketch reminds me a lot of Arthur Rackham.

Espenboi: Love the sci-fi slant.

Felida: Well-done ornate costume. I like the scene you've created, it tells a story by itself.

Artofinca: Cannibal fairy, nice. For some reason, her expression evokes sympathy... obviously contrasts with her actions.... could work!

Trevor: I like the style and atmospherics. At this point it feels like the environment is getting more attention that she is. Can't wait to see her fleshed out more.

Nutter: Silky smooth!

T-Turrill: Love the sketches. You do great faces.

Fersteger: I like this, even tho it is really rough at this point it feels like a John William Waterhouse
painting (can't believe I remembered that name). Very intimate scene and nice comp. Foreground might distract from the
character design however.

JOHNGRELLO: Love where it is going, but I really prefered her right hand in your first sketch. Other
than that, nothing.

Sorry couldn't get everybody, gotta go back to my hovel! Will try later.

I did an Open Figure Drawing Workshop master copy (http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/3421/bathermastercopygsfinaljo6.jpg) last year that is a strong influence here, I'm trying for that same sense of casual and un-selfconscious voluptuousness.

Titania is pulling some fey influence into her, including satyrs and other woodland things. Her hair trails behind her like a writhing elemental mane. Forest dreads.

The fairies in her entourage are somewhat fairy, somewhat gobliny, mostly strange. We'll see where it goes next.

I originally drew her naked, then put some clothes on her. My girlfriend said she preferred her naked though. She might stay dressed for the final or not. Either way I'll keep it tasteful :]

keep up the solid work everybody! wows.

Does anybody mind making new posts as you go? As long as they're consolidated in the final burner I'm guessing that's ok? Thanks!

JOHNGRELLO:if you want to go in another direction still there is time...but i think you should finish the first one.i don't know exactly what, but the more advanced painting lost some of the feel of the drawing...the gesture of the body perhaps(level of shoulder and the change in the right foot)...maybe is just me(i need to sleep!)...anyway the figure is great and the composition is interesting.so i think you could finish it.

ok so in the spirit of improving my painting skillz (i have the color sense of a comatose mule), i'm trying the b&w to color approach. which i've never done. and i am trying to work it loosely and then tighten, instead of treating my painting like a coloring book and staying in the lines.
i still have no clue what color scheme i'd like.

Always appreciate that kind of torture. Besides, my past chows haven't been too successful and I could use the guidance.
As for my advice to the far and many in between, keep on doing what you're doing and I apologize for not leaving individual comments at this time. To the usual bad asses here: Jessi-Bean, Matt Dixon, Pixeltuner, and the lot. Thanks for showing us how its done.

Kroevyn: Very nice... did you dive in painting?
Thanks :)
& nah I did a few sketches before painting

-----

MJ_Alcazar: Good work so far, love the detailed costume. Her pose is slightly awkward though; she doesn't seem to be leaning properly on her right hand/arm, and it looks like she's about to fall over.

Graphuji: Love the overall design, looks great. I think there's an anatomy problem somewhere but I can't quite figure it out. Perhaps her waist is a little too small?

humboldt squid: Ooh I think I liked the other pose more, it was more dynamic, but it's still early days for this one, can't wait to see where you take it.

hunchback: Great colour scheme. Some of the forms are a little hard to read though - especially with the material. The whole image looks a little too.. contrasted, if that makes sense? Adding more mid-tones would help define the forms. & yes to wings :) The pose she is in would look great with wings.

amaliax: I like the style you're going for. The wings seem a little big though, not sure how they're attached to her body?

Lammashta: Great start, interesting pose. Might want to watch the foreshortening though - her left leg is at an odd angle.

peter_john Lol I'd like to know how to pronounce Titania too XD Very nice pic so far. Her fingers look a bit short though. Can't wait to see it coloured.

Nightblue: Looking great so far. The upper body is good, but something about her legs makes the pose seem a little stiff.

Wolfentir: Interesting style. Colours are looking quite nice as well. I'm not sure what direction you're aiming for, but perhaps try varying the line weight of the figure, currently she looks a little flat & is blending into the background (in the uncoloured version).

daestwen: Nice sketch. Reminds me of the Pressed Fairies book. Can't wait to see where you take it.

JOHNGRELLO: You should definitely finish this one. Looks great so far. Not too sure about the background though, the blue is a little too bright & is taking attention away from the figure.

T_Turrill: Great start. Love the headdress/hair/thing. There doesn't seem to be a specific light source though?

Im with you John, while i wasnt as far along as you, im starting over. There seems to be soo many things you can do with this that each time somone posts a new image i get new ideas.
But i will try to talk you down, cause i love yours! But at the same time, id be very intersted to see what else you can come up with :)

Tiffany - i really like it, the one thing that is bugging me is the purple, it makes it hard to see the art for what it is. But looks like its going to end up nice :)

Getting colors in, jumping around still right now, not even sure what the hands and feet are going to be like yet. Ill have to take a look at the leg positioning, her left one seems fine, i can see that the right one is off.

February 4th, 2009, 05:28 AM
OK, so I've been here for a long time, but I rarely get very involved on here. At least "socially," you know "no critique, no likey." Hey, but it's a new year and I just discovered that I have a keyboard and not just a tablet which I'm also trying to get to know a lot better. I'm usually lurking in the deep dark shadows of my office oogling other people's amazing work when I probably should be working on mine more. But your all just so damn good! So I guess it's your (general you) fault I suck. But that's in the past. Enough "emoing out:davi: ."

Posh Spice: Very cool! I like the old school Froud feel!

Trevor: MAN I'M LOVIN' YOURS!!! BTW, If you'd be willing I would totally be interested in any tips on BW to Color method. I'll pay you in total admiration :asskisser: .

Nutter: Lookin' good! You have to finish it!! I must see it finished!!!

JOHNGRELLO: Dude! Your stuff is rad! I always like what you come up with.

T_Turrill: You have some sick sketches! Don't feel to bad about improving on your painting/color skills, I'm in the same boat as you. I know once you start to get it though, you're going to be awesome! Keep it up!

Matt Dixon: What can I say man... You are the DIXON! I always love your work. In fact I'm reading my Fantasy Artist's Bible right now! Hah :asskisser:

Artofinca: I really like where you're going with it! Looking forward to seeing it finished.

fersteger: Awesome colors! Reminds me of Klimt's work.

ikuru: lookin' cool! uh er warm, That's a warm color scheme right? I'm so stupid :P .

hunchback: I think it would benefit your piece if you toned down the spacing on your brushes. The strokes are looking repetitive (in a bad way) and I think they take away from the character. Other than that I think she's looking pretty good!

Peter_John: Yours is in my top three faves so far. Rad concept! I can't wait to see it finished! I was kind of going for that feel myself. Now we'll have to see though.

EVERYONE ELSE: I suck at typing and thus far I've probably spent an hour at least doing just that. So I am sorry that I did not comment on yours, but I may very well just do that in the future. And don't feel bad just because I didn't comment on yours, or anyone else didn't! Because you know what? It's not about getting comments, or even critiques, it's about getting better. And yah sometimes those comments, or critiques can help, but I will tell you from experience that the best way to get better is to just keep painting and just keep drawing. Be an artistic scientist and test out your theories everyday and when you run into problems, then find the the solutions to your problems and then make new hypotheses and test those and eventually you're going to kick butt! Anyone can be an artist, but a good artist never quites learning and improving on their skill. Keep it up guys!!!!!!:yayca:

With all that being said I kind of feel like a big schmuck for posting my barely mediocre art. But hey, I will anyway. Maybe someone will comment on it :asskisser: !

No seriously though I was thinking.. Titania.. daughter of a Titan. OK so maybe she's like a giant and she's queen of the fairies so she's a woodland type character so here's what I got so far...

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/8373/fairiequeenox2.jpg

...Which I would be much farther along if I didn't have to do so much damned typing ;) . How do some of you guys do this? Much respect!!! So I just realized how many ass-kissy emoticons I have and that's funny and thought I'd add one more for good measure, but then I thought better of it and decided to add this one  .

That's actually a really cool and original concept, Nate. I think it would be better to reign in those extreme proportions a little - they're making her look a little comical right now. Just scaling up the torso and legs so they're better balanced with the arms and head should do it.

What's she doing? Right now her pose and expression are neutral, like she's waiting to have her photograph taken. Giving her even a simple action such as watching the birds circling her staff, or shielding her eyes from the sun as she surveys her realm would help to project a bit more personality.

This could be a really sweet entry.

Windsrock: Its totally cool to exaggerate though I suggest taking off your shirt and taking a picture of yourself with harsh directional lighting in the pose you have your figure in. Theres lots of bones and muscles under your skin!

artofinca:Its beautiful. I like how bright it looks.

natedogler: I agree with MD, its a really cool idea. Is there a way you can make her more queenly and still keep the rustic giantish feel?

By common consent, how much is a three quarter figure? Mid-thigh? To the knee? Mid-calf? I'm having lady anatomy problems and I don't want to draw any more lady than I have to.

daestwen: FOUL! delay of game! OFFSIDES! your allowed to play? hehe... j/k... very nice... is that in a sketch book or emulated?

Yes, technically I'm allowed to play. :P Usually though (especially with rounds this big) when I play I don't go to poll. Even if I did I would never win with what's running around this week. :P And it's emulated. I have a tablet pc, so i just used a really sketchy brush in photoshop to kind of get that pencil thing going... mostly just experimenting because i have yet to find a way of digitally drawing/painting that i actually like. :/

Kroevyn: Yeah, I kind of had that book in mind, though i obviously did not want to squish her. :P

Nutter:

I really like her look...nice idea with the batwings.

Grenogs:

I like her attitude, she really seems to be pissed off.....

JOHNGRELLO:

Love the coloring......Your steps of getting a piece done is really unerringly and professional

Trevor:

Your painting style is amazing!!...It's great to see that you don'T always need a extreme light source or whatsoever..to get the focus right where it should be.
How is your approach, do you always start to block in colors in an early stage of the painting?.
AS for the BW to Color techniques....MAn, if there is something written down about that....mhmm....would be great.

Ferrous Jack:

Looking very dynamic....MAybe she looks a bit more like a soldier than a queen.

masque:

Love her pose...especially her hair!

peter jhon:

Ohh man...this is really awesome......love the guy with the hat!
superb interpretation!

Wolfentir:

I really like the style...looks a bit like a Prinz Eisenherz Comic....maybe add some little fairies, as for now it could also be just a naked woman.

Artofinca:

Really like her expression....looking forward to see more

Here is my sketch....hope i can finish this one.....

6 pages and not even halfway through the week! There might be more entries this time around than the self portraits :D

My rough WIP, I'm kind of just brain dumping at the moment. Not terribly innovative, but I'll take any excuse to draw a pretty girl :P Still working out the costume and what I'm going to do about wings, if she'll even have them. I'm thinking the caplet around her shoulders is going to be fern leaves.

Edit: I just realized she's looking very world of warcraft right now...damn. Back to the drawing board.

Posh,Trevor, nutter, johngrello, and Matt Dixon - of course are already stand outs.

Stoat - love the lineart so far, I hope your lady issues resolve because I very much want to see more.

ikuru - great color scheme, your thumb looks good. I'm excited to see where you take it.

masque - Yours is one of my favorites so far. Something about the style really resonates with me.

Felida - You have a real eye for detail, and I like the composition. Right now your color scheme is reading very pastel, very storybook :D

T Turrill - I think we're going for the same kind of woodsy vibe, but yours is much more graceful and natural. Your sketches were wonderful. When it comes to color, if I don't have a clear idea right out of the gate I'll try out three or four schemes and compare. If I'm still not entirely sure I'll play with adjustment layers to see if I come across something I really like. I'm still learning about color and it often helps me discover color combinations I otherwise wouldn't think of.

peter john - Fantastic lineart, looking forward to your progress

shannanigan - The little Indian boy looks great, I'm so glad you included him. Your sketch of the frame in the background is very complimentary, but I think you should keep it subtle, like it is now. If it was brighter or more pronounced I think it would compete with Titania and the boy.

I'll crit and comment more on the WIPs when I've had a chance to read the feedback others have left, I don't want to repeat everybody :D

LOL! Well proper Victorian Ladies didn't wear red unless it was for a fancy ball... day clothing for a stroll through the park was much more subdued. ;)

I wanted to keep her coloring more toned down and "Celtic" with the mossy greens.... and the little Indian Boy in brighter colors as a contrast to her. Right now I think there is a good balance between him and the other touches of red.

Next time I'll do something in Uber-Red for you Dani, since you like what I'm doing enough to comment. I appreciate it! :^^:

You never know...she could be taking that little boy to a ball. I would go with a darker green, which you probably will with the shadowing later. (Don't mind me, I'm just on my red colour phase, tonight will be purple, and tomorrow will be blue...or maybe green. The dress will be okay on a green day.)

Wow, the work so far this week is rather intimidating, and I'm pretty behind. I was wondering if I could get some quick opinions on my sketch. So far I have Titania ensnaring a mortal boy (the little things flying around are fireflies), but I wasn't sure if I should just cut the boy and just do her with lots of fireflies. Any thoughts? Some comments, couldn't do everyone - I need to get back to drawing! :D

Kroevyn - Appreciate you taking the time to comment, when I looked at your wip - the first thing that jumped out at me was that she seemed almost too normal? I barely noticed the wings on the first glance - maybe make it a bit more magical?

Digmagyan - Thanks for the comments, I like where yours is going but the front arm looks quite awkward - is she going to be holding something?

JohnGrello - Thanks for the feedback, really nice start on yours, not sure what's happening with the fairy in the middle though - is she swinging it through the air?

scorge - I hope the figure on the left stays black! It makes a really nice contrast.

guastaferro- The top half looks pretty nice, but the position of the legs seems quite uncomfortable.

Natedogler - I agree with Matt, I think the facial expression will be key on this one. She looks helluva bored at the moment :D

Angel Intheuk - The final one is looking nice, is she going to have arms or are they under the dress?

Thanks! I had the idea for the Victorian style first, and when I read about the little boy being Indian I thought How perfect, since England was governing over India during Queen Victoria's rule.

As for the frame, I was thinking about vintage photo albums. They had plain pages with cut-outs to insert the photos in. But around the cut-outs were pretty, decorative gold borders. Something along those lines... so it will be tonal. :D

Artofinca: Live your design. Her right arm seems longer than the left
Windsrock Make her as thin as you want, but take a look on the anatomy. I think, her breasts are to low.
NateShaw I like the horns :) Its not clear if she's sitting on the seating or on the border.

Delmar - really love how she seems ancient and very much a part of the woods, yet still retains an air of majesty about her.

Zilrion - it's looking good so far, but as far as composition. It seems like the fly is commanding as much attention as she is. It's probably because it's still in early stages. Maybe push it back or make it a little less dark. Or even move it down and to the edge a bit.

Shannannigans - love the little boy. She's looking pretty fierce too. I agree with Sentinel, just keep the background subtle, otherwise it will compete too much.

Stoat - I hope you finish, I'm really liking it so far.

Nateshaw - I know it's just an initial sketch, but if you weren't already planning to do so, I would move her feet a bit. Her right leg is fine, but I know when I sit down, I very rarely, if ever keep both my feet together, Try bending her other leg underneath, either at the ankle, or bring it back and have it under her knee. I like how you're adding...Nick?...the guy with the head of an ass. Very cool.

Windsrock - exaggeration is good, but don't completely ignore anatomy laws completely. She still needs internal organs, or the semblance of them and a frame to support herself.

Kroeyvn - Liking it so far. The expression coming across her face is neat. I think her arms may be two different lengths though.

natedogler - cool idea! I agree with the comments i've been reading about fixing some of the porportions a little, make her a bit less comical. But, props for the idea.

JohnGrello - Even if you do another one, I think you should finish this at some point. Really liking it, although it's lost something from the original sketch.

T-Turill - loving it so far!

scorge - i think her neck may be too long.

daestwen - i like the style, i hope you finish this. I want to see where you take it.

Nightblue - like her design, but I think the legs are really stiff looking. Like her colors!

Peter john - i'm liking it so far. Maybe let her right arm flow a little more? It looks stiff.

Pixeltuner - I'm liking her. she seems very commanding. Not entirely sure I like where you cut her off, but I'm sure you're still working with it. So, no big deal. :)

dirkvandulmen - I love her! She's gorgeous, and very queen-like. I really like the colors you chose.

masque - like the feel of your piece, and the way your painting it. Very nice.

FerrousJack - I'm liking it so far. keep it up.

Felida - loving the color scheme and the style.

Matt Dixon - love her expression!

DIMAGYAN - loving how it's coming along, but I'm not entirely sure she looks queen-like. I always enjoy the different sketches you go through before you settle on the last.

Baxter-E - liking the bug-like design.

Nutter - like the design.

Sorry I didn't make it too everyone.
And, I didn't make it back to the first two pages. So, I'll try to get back there later.

Jefita

fersteger - I don't think saturated is a bad thing. I think it looks like it's coming along pretty nicely so far.

carnifex - I agree with mj alcazar, she does seem a little tipped. I think you should color her. The queen of the fairies needs pretty colors.

MJ_Alcazar - I like how saucy yours looks. I think her arm looks a lot better now.

Thanks for the feedback. I went and added in a background and I was a lot happier with the piece. Tweaked several details too and started working out values. Probably will ink/color now.

skorpi: Thanks mate, I'll be sure to work more on it now, I think I kind of got caught up in the rendering now also >_<

MJ_Alcazar: Yea the bug will get less contrast so that it wont take much attention at all :) Love the details in yours, especially the part of the top wrapping around the arms.

Sentinel13 Not anything constructive, but that's just awesome, I'm just waiting for her to kill that bird on her finger though :nohope:

As for the flying one, that's supposed to be(come) a guard or messenger coming up to bring a message for the queen. I didn't really try to go for the "Evil look". Mostly because I never associated faeries with being evil. I haven't added much design elements yet either, but I plan on adding tattoos to the arm as well as another scar (trying to show that she's just not some queen that just has the title for show, like here in Norway). Jewelry for the ears, and I do think I need to do more with the clothing but I'm not so sure as for what yet

Technically, it does say 'queen titania' and most queens don't recieve their crown until they're of age. :P

HOWEVER, who's to say how old faeries look when they are fully grown?

daestwen, hmm can't really think of anything,i'm pretty enthralled by her...on a closer look the feet look rather off though...if you try to sit like that for yourself...gotta turn them differently.

Of course, it's your descision :)
What i meant was not onl her age, but herself. For me she don't look really like a princess. But thats only my opinion ;)

actualy she doesnt even look like a faerie either at the moment, but then again ive never seen one for real, so who knows ;) But i understand what your saying, still plenty left with this, and i think by adding a few other elements into the picture later, including wings, then it should make a difference overall.:)

daestwen just a quick question, my memory has all of a sudden just disapeared, ;) but what is the actual coming of age for a king or queen these days? :bashful:

BTW, image is looking pretty good so far, cant see much wrong with the figure itself, apart from maybe the feet. from the look of her angle of her head im guessing your planning to add something to the left , maybe a main character or even hundreds of mini faeries could be good. Also are you keeping the background texture? has a nice earthly feel which suites the topic well.

Rise she does,
Into midsummer's embrace,
Clothed in night mist,
Nimbus-crown'd in living night,
Titania!
My lover, my wife, my Queen, my fate,
Come to me when Aurora
Draws her luminous veil 'cross your realm,
And we shall rejoice in day's awakening.

Nice, John. It feels good to see an image go from WiP to final without a lot of soul-searching and drama.

Me, I got no idea where I'm going here. I wanted the glowy, gauzy look and the odd, awkward hand. Beyond that, I got nothing. Her hair went all '80s on me, so I cut if off and I'll think about it later.

The lady, she is very shiny, no?

Okay, so I took some well given advice and with my newly inspired old concept I've gotten my final sketch completed. Thanks to all for your comments!

So just briefly, I'm trying to go for the whole daughter of a Titan/Giant faerie Queen. You can see here that she's kind of got this bee-hive hair-do thing going on, uh er, I guess you'd call it a faerie-home hair-do. I wanted to juxtapose the idea of a beautiful winged faerie-like Titania and make her a somewhat appalling giant (in human standards), but still attractive for a giant. I figured she's probably kind of kooky since she's always got faeries buzzing around her head. Now I've got to move on to the real challenging part and get her painted. Oh and I got a little more story coming later.

Edit: I just realized she's looking very world of warcraft right now...damn. Back to the drawing board.

dude you dont have the turquoise/lavender thing goin on...;)
those colors are perfect. it's gonna be rad when you turn it on us in a few days. me likey.

guastaferro: ha yeah the purple was the first thing i got rid of.

Trevor: her scaly arms make me ridiculously happy. like this: :D it's awesome that you've stuck to the limited color palette and it's still so rich. so wait is she gonna be holding a tooth? if so, maybe it'd read better that she's holding something with her hand turned the other way, palm-up? if not, tell me to stop talking. :P

JohnGrello: I agree with Masque - compositionally it's a little flat. The elements are kinda all tucked in their corners and not relating to each other. perhaps adding some elements to tie her environment together better? like some overhead branches to lead your eye down, with some foreground grasses or reeds to circle you back up? Seems think that big swathe of blue in the background severs everything, too. i'd prolly give the background more of an uneven ground line and add dense misty foliage - maybe a dark green fading to a deep aquamariney color. Her red belt deal seems to be up in the air for you - good move on getting rid of the rings - but you dont have that same red in any other elements. it seems to have been less of an issue in the 3rd image, when it was a bluey brown. i suggest keeping the purple as the warm elements, along with her little nose and mouth, and molding the cools and browns to keep it even.
whew sorry for the long ramble but i see so much good stuff going on in there (especially that face)...!

Good round ppl!

JohnGrello- I cannot anything to the oter ppls critique (hthough I feel the character is the important and that she is filling out the image in such a fascion that the background can have a downplayed role.

What I'm wondering, though, is why you signed your work Ionic, when your username is JohnGrello...??

Small Update....

I changed the background color a bit and completed the frame line art. Need to work on the gold effect, but gives you and idea of what I'm going for. Added the wings finally and started shading.

Oh and the white fluff is just a place holder for "fairy dust" which I will work out later. :D

EDIT: Last minute line art change.... I've decided to change her hat to look more like a crown (instead of a top hat). Think it helps with the hint of
"Queen". Though I never intended it to be obvious. Queen Elizabeth doesn't always carry a scepter and wear her crown either. ;)

Quinn Simoes Your design looks very unique and unlike many of the other works. One of my favorites for sure.

trevor Loving your darker approach to the infamous Queen of Fairies. Her design looks amazing.

No update yet, too busy to sneak some in at work :(

some comments:

forgerunner: nice start. her crotch is too far over to the right and a bit too forward (if you know what I mean?) and her left breast just needs moving up slightly to be more in line with the other one...other than that, looking good :)

Adam S: Hope you can finish, I really like the face and the pose is lovely - good luck

stoat: I'm kinda drawn to women with short hair that are usually depicted with long flowing locks, makes a nice change. I kinda like it, makes it pixie like

FerrousJack: Love her arm armour, nice touch with the leaf patterning! :) great pose and muscle definition, maybe make some of the foreground areas lighter (sorry can't see your picture anymore, but i remember it seemed a bit too dark to make out some stuff)

Kroevyn: I really like the rendering and colours. the wings look lovely transparent, if you're not happy with them you could try duplicating them and overlaying them in random type wing patterns to see what you get (that's my technique anyway :))

Xaya: great colours, solution for the feet is maybe put some foilage in the foreground? Cliqued I know but it could work with the composition nicely.

Fersteger: Love it! The colours are perfect and her hair is cool.

Jefita: I was going to say at first she would look better on her own but I agree now you've added background it looks better and I like the boy now :)

Updated my Titania on page 7, some subtle changes (thanks for the tips, guastaferro), feels pretty damn final to me but time will tell.

Hey Trevor, you might wanna take into consideration, that all the images are scaled down to the same width (300px I think) for the voting. That would make your queen very hard to see.
As beautiful as the composition is like this, you could lose votes from people that don't go through the thread to look at the full sized pictures, especially when there will be that many as in this round.
Maybe you could see if you could do a crop just for the poll pic or maybe you could ask deastwen, what she thinks about that.

And JohnGrello/ionic, what's up with your name, dude. You're getting people confused.

That's just for the technical side, I don't think, that this round needs any crits on the pictures themselves. I mean just look at this thread.... WOW! :wtf: I'm proud to be a part of this community :yayca: Keep up the good work everybody!!!

Tommoy: I like the feeling of tension and aura of potential danger, and the wings are one of the best "traditional" approaches I've seen in the round yet. But her offside leg (her left, pic right) doesn't seem to connect properly with the rest of the figure, the hidden thigh/pelvis joint seems placed out of kilter.

February 5th, 2009, 11:40 AM
I'll give it a try, but I'll probably not finish considering I need to pack for a new apartment this weekend.

Trevor - I'm liking this a lot so far. My only quibbles are that she doesn't seem more important than the other figures design wise (compositionally, yes). They don't really seem to be minions so much as villainous companions. Shes also looking a little 80s glam :P

Masque - Looking good. I think the breasts are sitting too high on the chest though.

JohnGrello - Really nicely painted but... shes looking a little human to me. As in, shes a human wearing a fairy costume.

I made a cleaner and more detailed lineart and changed the colors of the fox. Well, it actually is a fox *laughs* not a strange looking kitty...
Now starts the fun part X3 Painting.

Nether: Your queen has a wondeful face and the design is really interesting. I'm curious, what you're going to do with the colors and the background.
Tommoy: That's a really royal queen. I love the design of her wings and the colors look promising. I just got a problem with this light blonde hair/blue eyes combination because it reminds me of the classic lords of the rings elf-design. Also her size compared to the trees reminds more of an elf then a fairy.
D@niel: Awesome face! She really looks like someone not human. But I would change the pose of her legs. At the moment, they look a little bit unnatural.
Zirion: Such a cute face! Don't give up :) the final drawing will definitely be worth all the work. Only her ear looks a little bit strange to me and you should rething the position of the lake/river.
Jeremy Hoffman: I love the angry little dwarfs. Is this a crown-tatoo on her shoulder? I would make the upper parts of her arms thicker. It looks really painful although I like the style.

AlotAbitAlittle
February 5th, 2009, 12:34 PM
Baxter -E: The head looks a little big for her proportions, keep at it!

Joey-B: Your left hand looks a little small and your feet are a little off. I'd check out some reference. Also the background is a little muted—maybe some drama back there could help support your concept.

Physicalpariah: Watch your proportions the head looks a little large. I like the ground swirling look. Remember if her hair is blowing her clothing will most likely be as well.

I should get a wip up this evening. Work has kicked my butt this week...
