whats up peoples. anybody into photography here? i got a digital camera about 4 months ago, and its had a huge impact on me. Im constantly shooting stuff around me and my drawings have improved alot since i got it. Its really helping me to design within the picture plane as i see, and also its helping me to understand dimension in space.

the third shot was actually a lounge/work area at parsons, i set teh lighting in my camera to "incadescent", so thats why it turned out blue

my camera is a nikon coolpix 4300

350$ and its 4.0 megapixel. which is really good for taht price. its a great camera to start out with

That golden mask is an imported masquarade mask from Italy. I grabbed it from a collector for Halloween this year. Unfortunately it rained, so I was unable to wear that long.
I have pic of the whole costume at home I'll post later.

The photo itself was achieved by placing a flash unit inside the mask, one outside of the mask. Then brought into photoshop for an enhanced effect on the eyes and some saturation adjustment. I then composited a background of some smoke from the recent fires in Chatsworth, CA.

Carniflex - Nice lanscape shots. Love the last one. It is just a pity that scanning in photos pics up so much noise :( Can't complain about the second lot of pics :D

Phil - Awesome use of Depth of Field. The card shot is really cool. You took something very simple and made it a lot nicer.

These are all digital of course. I've shot with film for a while, then eventually moved to a digital point and shoot. Now I am fully loaded with a digital slr.

Be careful if you go this route. It gets expensive real fast.

Hola,

Tyboogie: Really nice stuff. The instant feedback of digital is hard to beat. It makes me shoot more.

Wizard of KOZ: I spent about 3 years teaching black and white darkroom work. My recommendation is that you get a manual SLR. Buy it used at a pawn shop or something. It will make you learn the basics of good exposure and the method behind the madness. If you couple this with doing your own darkroom work, you'll learn more than you thought possible about photography in a relatively short time. The basics apply to all photography and don't change (much) when you shoot negative film, transparency film, digital, etc. However, you will always be learning. It never ends.

Currently, I'm shooting black and white film with a manual rangefinder camera and shooting digital with a DSLR. PhilHolland is right when he says it gets expensive quickly. Don't all the best toys?

I need to do more personal B/W work.

I started out with a Minolta SLR years ago, and have experimented with just about anthing from pinholes to scientific CCDs.

I'm glad to here that you still use a rangefinder.
I've pretty much given up on film for the time being.

I agree 100% that you should start out with film though.
A lot of people believe that it's pretty simple to take just a photograph.

If you learn all you can about photography, the better off you'll be. And once you get used to doing it for a while, you'll actually start "seeing like a camera". If that makes any sense.

Anybody can take a photograph, few can actually make one.

I have had a digital camera for a lil while now, and their are some things i'm just not getting...
it's a Canon Powershot 5mp...

some of the settings escape, like how to set a camera to take landscape, or scity scapes without coming out fuzzy..

And having a hard time understanding shutter speed....technical stuff like that....

If you guys can tell me what nomral settings do you use on some of your shots (ie. close ups, long shots..etc) that would be awesome...

And to stay on topic, you guys are taking some mighty awesome pics...keep em coming...

king - Nice stuff. May I suggest in the tower pic that you remove the light blue from the clouds and make it more of a red like the sky.
I think that will tighten the "focus" on the tower.

Btw, that garfield puppet had full on mechanics in it that would allow it to move it's had and blink. Scary stuff.

bRyaN: Telling you what settings to use will not help you. The camera settings (aperture, shutterspeed) will change for every situation since proper exposure is based on the scene you are photographing. My suggestion to you is to pick up a basic photography book like "Photography for Dummies" or one of the Kodak books.

A book will help you learn what changing the aperture and shutter speed will do to the image you capture. Generally, the shutter speed will help you stop/blur motion, while aperture is used to control depth of field (how much of the image is in focus). There is no simple formula because these settings are dependent on each other too. If you change one, you have to change the other to compensate.

I could write a book on this stuff, but why, when there are so many out there that are already better than my drivel. Pick one up and learn the basics.

The beauty of digital is that you can experiment as you read and get immediate feedback. It's a great learning tool. If you've already ponied up the cash for a 5MP camera, the extra $20 for a book will be well worth it.

As far as your images being blurry is concerned. That's probably a function of you not holding the camera steady enough. Try putting the camera on a solid surface when you shoot. A mini tripod is a good idea. Also, the longer the focal length of the lens you use (long zoom, etc) the more likely it is that minute vibrations will reduce the sharpness of your image. Small cameras make it tough because they're so light and harder to hold steady.

Is it the higher the number the faster the shutter speed or vice versa?? For instance 1/3, or 1/8...

Shutter speed is measured (mostly) in fractions of a second.

1/3 is one third of a second
1/8 is one eighth of a second. Therefore, the 1/8 is the faster shutter speed.
1/125th is one one-hundred and twenth-fifth of a second. Much faster again.

Generally, if you are hand-holding the camera when shooting, I would try to maintain 1/125th or higher. With practice (and a small lens mounted), some people can hand hold down to 1/60th of a second and still get sharp pictures. If you've been shooting around 1/8th that's almost certainly why your pics are blurry. In photography, 1/8th of a second is a loooong time.

Aperture numbers are a little counter intuitive. The smaller number means a larger lens opening. For example f1.4 lets in 16 times more light than f5.6 and 128 times more light than f16.

the colour is difficult in that one :/

the Tree on the right has this warm green, the sky the warm red.
that kinda makes the whole picture blurry warm.
I wouldn't know how to fix that in this particular case tho.. :/

the last pic I posted was with my 35mm - these are with my new digital cam (Pentax Optio 550) with the landscape stiching mode facitity thing - but stiched in photoshop.
I havent yet got to learn the camera - these were all taken on auto settings. I orgianly brought a digicam for textures and reference, but always liked doing this stuff.

I had to downsize these for loading purposes but the originals are like 35MB - 1500pxls by 8000pixls etc etc. apologies for the watermarks. i would rather not put them, but you cant be too careful nowadays.

Ths was taken on Friday night (19thDec) had my cam on me and was in this club in london. was regretting I was taking the damn thing around with me, but then I thought I'll have some fun. turned out ok - I like the blurs. I was sitting in a corner - thats the DJ booth on the left - a mate of mine drinking his pint (who moved so his refection is different). never noticed the girl pointing at me until I just stiched this together tonight! theres a dodgy bit of stiching on that orange pillar, but I only just decided to stich it to night - probably do a better job after the holidays and bung it on my website.

This little car is the new fad in Europe. Ain't it cute? it's so small, it's in the 2nd floor of a small shopping mall in Switzerland. It's called a Smart and it's made by Swatch (the watches, you know). That little girl was as intrigued as I was, apparently.

The Fenced Shadow is rather experimental. I took about 30 photos @ 10-60 seconds each and at different angles to bring out the shadow detail. It was like 1:00am - somewhere in Chatsworth.

I am using a Canon 10D for all of my photography nowadays. I have seven lenses currently. Only two zooms in the bunch.

Yes. I do a lot of color correction to the images after the fact. However, this is also what I do for a living on feature films. So I kind of get to merge the two. I spend more time achieving "the look" on my photography though.:D

I sold 4 prints today! That's $140 bucks I didn't have an hour ago.

Samoan Firedancer from my recent jaunt to Hawaii. All shot with my Canon 10D handheld. Fruxx - The img tag is broken, so I don't know which picture you are talking about. But, the answer is probably yes. I do like to post process my images a bit. However, some of the time it's just about getting the desired custom white balance and exposure combination.

That dragon was the weirdest thing! It was on some back highway in northern/central Pennsylvania and I have no idea why it was there. There was nothing even remotely related around it. Damn, I haven't been on this one in a while, there's so much cool stuff. Joshua, mine are shot with a Lomo, which is a nice little fun camera. Its kind of a cult thing, and there's a lomographic society. They have a lot of fun cameras too. Check out www.lomo.com, its pretty amazing. I've had mine since high school, and its a lot of fun.

Jaenos - To take the sharpest photos with any camera, get a tripod and use a fast shutter speed and an f/stop around f/8. It's a general statement, but true in most cases.

Mykro - Lomo's rule. I support that, but I need more "options".

king - Thanks! And very nice. Good use of depth of field. It draws the viewing into the image so much more than having everything in focus.

The bridge photo was shot with a fisheye lens. I defished it to make it a rectilinear image, then applied color correction to the water and bridge separately.

It could be me in those photos!

I really f'ed (are we allowed to swear) up this picture and I'm mad. First of all, not all of the picture is here because it was cut off in the scanner and I was too lazy to redo it. But this picture was great I thought, but the background didn't come in focus. :( It's a picture of a garbage can that says "Don't Litter" and in the background there are about 40 garbage bags over flowing on to the street and trash is everywhere. Taken during the impressive fires in Southern California a few months back. Seeing the smoke block out the sun was what made me grab the camera.

My favorite color..... I put some thought into this last night. Like I said before, I don't really have one favorite color. However, I do love how color works. The one word that kept popping into my head was saturation.
I really love how a complete black and white picture can hide or reveal the image based on it's lack of color. Sometimes I'm amazed at the original colors found in a photograph. I love saturated and desaturated images. That's what I'm trying to show in the composite below. Everyting from extreme saturation to a milder one. Then on the right is a mirrored image completely missing the color. Everything from white to black.

If this isn't really what you were expecting I might give it another go.

Dominie_Dirtch I like very much the dead man shot and the tombstone one, the lighting was perfect in the last one. For the B&W picture, I suggest that we post also the colored ones if we have them also, it is much easier to impress with B&W pictures than colored ones, so lets get more competent and prove we really can handle own cameras.

Well this is a picture I took when I was in Portugal, I was in front of this portal, and all of the sudden I noticed how all the items in front of me in a moment had exactly the same colors. I did some color manipulation in this picture just to highlight vivant colors I saw and impressed me a lot from that moment until now.

Hey samna...I'm here. Unfortunately I had to send my camera in for some repairs. There's some problem with the light meter or something. It's still under warranty which is good, but you know how eager companies are to repair and return people's cameras (please note the heavy sarcasm). Hopefully I'll get it back sometime this year!!! When I do I'm sure I'll go on a photo frenzy of sorts.

Well King, this is indeed a nice photograph.
Apart of the colors and the great weather in which you took the picture, the shot itself makes the perseption of the most common things twisted and yet very nice. Who says the horizon is always horizontal?????

inpho - I don't know much about buying a camera these days - anyway , mine is a traditional canon - sometimes I use my brother's which is this one : http://www.photo.net/ezshop/product?product_id=2340

I prefer a canon's lens - in general my advice is that you buy the camera that will fit with your needs - It does not have to be a super one - it will be so expensive - start with a simple one during developing your skills - good luck inpho .

I went to a historical cemetary in Providence, RI and took my camera. The cemetary is in bad shape, and I know they're planning on fixing it, but in the meantime, it's a pretty desolate place. I was the only one (awake) in that place at the time and I don't know if it was because of the solitary aspect, but walking amongst 18C. tombs was rather humbling and somehow serene. I can't say I felt any spirits around me, but I felt like I could have been part of a Charles Dickens story, where suddenly, the ghosts of the past would rise up and take me, probably unwillingly, into some enlightening journey.

Again, those photos are not beautiful like most of the ones in this thread, but rather witnesses to a moment in time that I did find interesting.

Like in any cemetary, there are many categories of tombstones one can peruse at will. For instance, you have architecturally beautiful, if not interersting, ones:

And the ones that are interesting in shape, forms and shadows; the graceful stillness of broken statuettes brings a peaceful reminder of times long past :

My personal take on it is based on two reasons: historical and geographical. Historical, because it's one of the oldest states, and thus has more "history", so to speak. There are quite a lot of old money/families living in the area and with that comes the political and financial influences that might have brought some of the artists to live in the area, if they weren't born around here to begin with. Providence, RI is also a haven for artists and intellectuals with many famous schools and colleges (the two most famous are probably Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design aka RISD), and it tends to reflect on the atmosphere of the place, I think. Geographically speaking, the landscape and old Victorian architecture are prone to exhult wild imagination bursts, perfect for a Lovecraftian novel, for instance, or a Poe lamentation. The weather is inconsistent and certainly has some effect on the psyche of the people living here. It can changes radically in 30 minutes from sun to snow, and it does happen. Such extremes do help depression, I would assume, or at least certainly influences the finding of those hidden dark places within the confinements of one's inner self.

I blabber, but the place is old and the memories of time are present. It's up to the individual to see or feel them.

It's been a little while now, but I had a chance to visit with Jon Foster for a weekend in Providence and I can tell you as a "tourist" it was one of the coolest places I've ever been. The vibe (for lack of a better way to put it) was really cool and I would very much like to go back again. It's just as tegehel has stated. The whole area seems to drip with historic significance and weight. I could feel it in the air. Another reason I was so anxious when I got there is because it's the stomping grounds and resting place of H.P.Lovecraft, one of my favorites. I didn't have my camera then, but would love to go back and take a shot of his grave. That cemetery was absolutely beautiful!

If you have a chance to visit you definitely should!!!! I hope to go back soon!

Guys welcome all back; I cannot imagine that I have missed all of these pictures in just 2 days.
These nature photos are really great, I wish I had more time to show the nature in my country but I don't and my camera is in the repair shop.

PhilHolland, I have to say this honestly, I didn't like the photos that you took with macros and with a powerful perspective, because they were of course impressive but could've been taken anytime and any place, but this time I loved all these photos, they are momental and interactive somehow.

King your product decreased in quantity, but you take some shots that pass unnoticed in real life, and they are very good for that reason.

tyboogie: I think the english name is roedeer. I like the cinema or theatre seats although I think it might have been better without the bit behind the last row at the bottom of the pic- attracts the eye too much imo.

wynd: nice bw work, the winter ones are probably my favourites.

molested cow: There were some that I thought were pretty boring but you made up with it well with a number of beautifull ones too!

it's been a few months since I looked at this thread, and I must say, wow! Very intense, lots of great work in here.

tegehel- your providence cemetary pulled a couple of smiles out of me. I can't say I've been in that one specifically, but it looks familiar. A good number of my relatives do live/have lived in the Prov/Pawtucket area so I have 24 years of tourist's experience with the gray winters there (and for some reason, I think we walked through more than one cemetary where we didn't know any dead people).

I'm not the photographer that many of you guys are, more of a snap-shooter for reference for paintings. But here are 3 pics taken today:
