in the interest of making time for my own art and eventually prints of them to sell i and my coworkers have taken to doing the weeklies just for fun during our lunch breaks and this weeks chow topic was so good i just couldnt resist
self portrait s a super villain? hell yes
i spent most of the day today wrapping it up at the magic the gathering conflux prerelease event in houston texas and, damn, anyone out there who has done one of these events as the guest artist signing cards and selling prints should have told me what happens there hahahaha
i showed up with a (borrowed) sharpie and my laptop.........
nothing else
i feel like such a moron
nobody told me i should bring PRINTS TO SELL!!!!!!!!!
i had a great time but missed out on a good opportunity to make a little extra scratch for the modbook pro i so desperately desire that
it haunts me in the night hahahaha
the fans were nice and i must have signed at least 1000 cards (seriously i am not kidding! i have heard the pro events are even worse and will destroy even the most powerful of wrists!!!)
do any of you people selling prints out there have some good printer info i could get? maybe postcards as well?
but anyways
here we go
the pic, detail and a image only tut
i will put a psd up for DL soon if anyone wants it but thats a bit hard to put together right now so i will wait untill i get home hahah
i may go in and add a bit of tech-ing maybe some demolished bilboards or even bodies in the rubble
but for now im damn happy and happy its over hahaha
let me know what you think
i know i dont say this often enough conceptart.org, and for that i am sorry
so here it is.......i love you
this site has done so much for my career in the last few years and i want you all to just imagine where you would be without this community
its been such a great career guide, learning resource and playground
dont take it for granted and it will help us all grow
oh the image is called "nervous circuits" named for
an amazing song by this post-whatever no-wave awesome band from the mid nineties called the VSS
check them out

looks awesome, man! love that tentacle arm :D you gotta do another where he/you're making use of that knife!

The perspective is so neat, I'd even say perfect. You truly achieved in giving tis piece depth and dimension.
If I had to crit only one thing though, it would be the hair. Compared to his beard, it looks unfinished, undetailed. It's part of the central part of the image; the face.
apart from that, I can only say: VERY nice work. I like.

Great image, and the WIP is very nicely presented.

You are totally right about this website. It's scary to think what I'd be doing if I hadn't discovered this site. I'd probably cry myself to sleep every night and think life sucks because I'd have no guidance or idea what I really want to do with my life.

Fantastic image and great character. I love how you managed to seamlessly integrate the mechanical tentacle into the casual pose to really highlight it as an extension of his body.

I said it before I'll say it again... That is freaking awesome man. Love yer work ;D

Also, I can see you're process but I can't understand how to colour images properly. I done a CHOW piece but I kept the black lines and the colour's + shading are not very strong at all. You able to give any tips? On how to apply good looking colour?

well step 2 is a hard light layer to sort of use as an underpainting
then i doge it a little bit to establish lighting
then a few soft light and overlay layers with mid value circular gradients of color to establish the tone
then painting on soft light layers with lighter colors to push the lighting some more
after that i merge it all and then just start painting in color
occasionally using gradient map adjustment layers set to soft light color and overlay to further define my color
its really a big experiment until it feels right
which of course is completely subjective hahahah

This is pretty cool. The color scheme and design of the suit are really remeniscant of Metal Gear Solid 4. I'd crit it, but really, anything I see that bugs me is so miniscule that it's really not even worth pointing out. Great job!

Totally rad and all that! I would modify the lighting on the thumb of the left hand just a teensy tiny bit, so that the cigarette is more easily seen. I looked for more than 20 seconds at least, trying to make out where it was, because I knew it was there (by the flame and hand position) but I just couldn't see it.

absolutely fantastic!
i love the color schemes you use, aha i always feel surprised by them.
I´m not sure if i like her hair, but i love the rest, especially the poited nosed creatures! The image has a greath depth, is a pleasure to look at!
I also love how her "costume" is a part of her skin, not just something placed over. nice nice =)

there are so many of those little things here
at least 2 or 3 a week
its actually better than LA in that regard!

hey man... great work here.
I do have a question for you

How do you think starting so monochromatically with your pieces effects the final out come? Does it help or hurt your work?

well if i didnt think it helped i wouldnt be doing it hahahah
it has a way of letting me experiment a bit more than painting in color
and as a loose rule of thumb when your values are good in B/W
your values will be good in color (of course with layer styles changing things a bit it can be a delicate balance of how much to change

it's pretty good for being pretty amazing. It's actually an awesome idea and executed really well, the only thing is I saw your avatar first and thought his headpiece was some crazy starfish sucking on his face. Starfish can be pretty scary though, I mean if there was one on me id probably freak out unless I was a villian id think it was cool and intimidating.

Youre an ArtCenter student right? or used to be? My best friend/roommate and I are thinking about biting the bullet/burring ourselves in debt and going there. Done quite a bit of research on the school and have plenty of JC credit, its just a matter of signing our financial lives away till the day we die :P but the skills/discipline/etc are worth it it seems...
