View Full Version : Favorite MUSICAL ARTIST in Alphabetical Order
Jacob Kobryn
January 31st, 2009, 02:37 AM
This will be a parallel to the visual art version of this thread in the general lounge only this one focuses on music. If the band's name is a name, then it should be filled under the second word so Frank Zappa would go under Z. Any other name should go by the first letter. Ignore "The". Try and post more unknown bands so that we can discover new music, which is the point of this thread. Write a little about the band so we know what to expect and then post a few youtube videos ( [ yt ] [ / yt ] ) and/or the bands myspace. Album/logo/band pictures are cool too.
I'll start:
The Axis of Perdition
Deleted Scenes is one of the darkest/scariest albums I've ever heard.
The Axis of Perdition's output comprises black metal experimentation with industrial music and dark ambient textures. The Axis of Perdition's debut album stated that "Axis of Perdition plays something there isn't words for yet (exclusively)".
Their sound is primarily based on distorted guitars with black metal vocals, programmed drums, and discordant sound effects including screams and static. The black metal aspects of the music are digitally distorted, interspersed with atmospheric soundscapes formed by synthesizers and field recordings. The Axis of Perdition's tracks tend to feature shifting free-form arrangements that lack a typical verse-chorus structure and tend toward lengthiness (one such track, from Deleted Scenes from the Transition Hospital, is over twelve minutes long).
Tapping inspiration from H. P. Lovecraft, Ramsey Campbell and the Silent Hill games (their EP Physical Illucinations in the Sewer of Xuchilbara is named for the dark deity of the games) as well themes of urban decay and mental illness, The Axis of Perdition are often compared to groups like Anaal Nathrakh and Blut aus Nord for their similar grim, urban industrial metal aesthetics.

VED BUENS ENDE
VED BUENS ENDE (meaning “At the end of the rainbow”) was founded by Carl-Michael Eide(drums, vocals) in 1994. Joined by former members of groups of the Norwegian Black Metal scene Hugh Steven James Mingray(also known as “Skoll”, ULVER)and Yusaf Parvez(DØDHEIMSGARD), the musicians aimed to write music outside the limited borders of the scene. Their first release, a demo EP titled “Those who Caress the Pale” and consisting of five tracks rooted in Black Metal, was recorded and distributed in 1994 through Ancient Lore Creations. Meanwhile, the writing process for a full-length album has begun under the influence of such artists as COIL, UNIVERSE ZERO and SWANS, as well as classical music. Signed under Misanthropy Records, the group released a follow-up to the EP during the October of 1995, their first and, so far, only full-length titled “Written in Waters”. Still influenced by the atmosphere and the vibe of the Norwegian Black Metal scene, yet not so much influenced by its aesthetics, the album was way ahead of its time and perfected the group’s ideas, developing a surreal, unique and avant-garde sound which hadn’t been achieved by anyone before. Revolutionary and challenging, VED BUENS ENDE’s debut is an album that predicted the rise of a Norwegian scene commonly referred to as Post-Black Metal. However, the project somehow didn’t move on as its members were too busy with their numerous other groups.
Fortunately for us all, VED BUENS ENDE have reformed in 2006, replacing Steven James with Petter Berntsen on bass and adding a new drummer Einar Sjursø, both from Eide’s other project titled VIRUS, allowing Carl-Michael to stick to vocals and guitar duties. Their second album is planned to be recorded the same year and released in 2007. Stay tuned!
VED BUENS ENDE’s only album so far, “Written in Waters”, is highly recommended to all intellectual fans of Progressive Music, including but not limited to avant-gardists and fans of the Norwegian Post-Black scene; as it is not merely a landmark of Norwegian Progressive Music, but also an atmospheric, brilliant, timeless record.

Wolves In The Throne Room
WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM are from Washington state and were formed by brothers Nathan (guitar, vocals) and Aaron Weaver (drums) and Rick Dahlin (guitar). The band self-released two demos in 2004 and 2005 before releasing their debut,"Diadem of 12 Stars" in 2006.
"Diadem of 12 Stars" was critically acclaimed and heavily praised throughout the metal underground community and WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM signed to Southern Lord Records.
The band released their second album "Two Hunters" in 2007."Two Hunters" was recorded on tape. The process of the recording was very organic with very minimal use of any digital effects or manipulation.
Even though WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM'S music is deeply rooted in the traditions of black metal, they blend their music with elements of raw black metal, punk, folk and progressive rock and metal, subverting the common aesthetic and ideology in order to remain true to their own personal manifestations.Their willingness to experiment with unconventional methods of recording and collaborate with avant-garde musicians sets them apart from most of the bands in this genre. This willingness to take chances and forge ahead with total disregard of convention or boundaries makes them a perfect fit for Tech/Extreme Prog Metal and they are HIGHLY recommended.

The inventors of Math Metal. You have to either be a metal head, a jazz drummer, a mathematician, or all three in order to like this band... Ozzy Osbourne's first guitarist after leaving Black Sabbath. My favorite musician. He died long before his time, having the misfortune of being in a biplane that crashed into a barn. One of the first people I would resurrect, if I had such a power.
If you can't stand Ozzy, you might want to skip these, but you'll be missing some incredible guitar playing.

Tartar Lamb
Tartar Lamb is the duo-project of Toby Driver and Mia Matsumiya, both of whom are also leading members of Kayo Dot. The band was established specifically to perform Toby Driver's composition "60 Metonymies"--which is an electric guitar-violin duet; however, it is extremely possible the duo will delve into future albums and pieces as well. Tartar Lamb was augmented by the participation of Tim Byrnes, who played trumpet, and Andrew Greenwald (of The Friendly Bears) who played drums during the recording of their only studio album "60 Metonymies". The album is self-released, and able to be ordered off of Toby Driver's website. ( http://www.myspace.com/tartarlamb )

Junkhead's great. I dunno, for me, AIC was one of those bands that make it difficult to narrow down a favorite song.

BED (check them out)
Anything with Kenny Davern playing clarinet
Anything with Scott Hamilton on sax...ditto for Ken Peplowski
Anything with Rebecca KILGORE - she's a member of BED but is on lots of other recordings and she's a musician's singer.

DÜN
DÜN came from Nantes in France, an instrumental sextet with ambitions of uniting all "known" types of prog. DÜN were the bastard offspring of Frank ZAPPA and MAGMA, with a heavy dose of RIO sensibility. The result was a 100% successful mix of Canterbury-, Zappa-, RIO-, Zeuhl- and symphonic impulses, music on a technical and theoretical level far above the main bulk of the average artists.
"Eros" was the group's only album. Recorded in 1981 and based on a popular concept written by Frank HERBERT, "Dune" would become as some sort of references with the track "Arrakis". All the tracks are consistently good, even on through the bonus tracks. The four studio tracks smoke from beginning to end. But, like most Zeuhl music, the bass and drums play a very dominant role. Another remarkable feature of the album is a strong flute presence. Personally I think that "Eros" is one of the best instrumental progressive albums made to date. Superb and essential masterpiece. Very strongly recommended!!!
I can't find YT vids sorry. :(

Esoteric
One of the most atmospheric bands in history. This music is some of the densest, most crushing shit on this planet!
From Wiki:
Esoteric was formed in 1992, and in 1993, released Esoteric Emotions - The Death of Ignorance - a demo tape containing 82 minutes of material with a total of eight tracks. Shortly thereafter they received an offer from Aesthetic Death to record a full-length CD of new material.[1]
In June 1994, Esoteric entered Rich Bitch studios in Birmingham, UK to record six tracks to be released as a double CD, titled Epistemological Despondency. Soon after the recording of this album, Stuart (guitar) and Darren (drums) left the band, leaving Greg Chandler (vocals), Bryan Beck (bass), Simon Phillips and Gordon Bicknell (guitars). In September of that year, Steve Peters joined Esoteric to complete the guitar section. However, a suitable drummer was yet to be found.
Having only played a handful of gigs in the UK, Esoteric travelled to Germany to play a series of shows. Halfway through the tour, they were forced to turn back after an injury to Steve's leg made it impossible to continue. In June 1995, the band was back on the road with a small tour of the UK. This tour was also cut short after only two shows when their equipment was destroyed by fire. Once the equipment was replaced, Esoteric began to prepare for the recording of their second release on Aesthetic Death Records.[2]
In 1996, Esoteric entered the studio once more to record The Pernicious Enigma - their second double-CD, consisting of 9 tracks. Towards the end of 1997, one day before they were due to depart for a short tour of Germany, Simon (guitar) left the band without warning. Fortunately, Greg (vocals) was able to fill in at short notice. This has since become a permanent arrangement.
Progress was becoming slow without a full line-up and with increasing work commitments, and the three tracks that were in development over a period of two years were recorded in order to make way for new material; without a permanent drummer, Esoteric was forced to use session drum-work, provided courtesy of Keith York. Eibon Records (Italy) offered to release these tracks which were recorded, engineered and produced without the aid of professional mixing and/or mastering technicians, and in 1999, Metamorphogenesis, was released.
In May 2002, just one week before Esoteric were due to start recording their fourth album, Bryan (Bass) left the band leaving the three remaining members to record the album. This was done in intervals over a period of time spanning across the rest of the year and into 2003, using session work (as with their previous album) involving Keith York on drums and Trevor Lines on Bass. After negotiation with various labels, Esoteric signed with the French label Season of Mist. The album titled Subconscious Dissolution into the Continuum was released on June 28, 2004.
Esoteric have completed their line-up with the recent addition of three new members during mid-2003, including Andy Semmens (drums) and Mark Bodossian (bass). In addition, Olivier Goyet joined the band to perform on the keyboards which allows them to better compose their material in a live environment, where the use of an extra instrument has become necessary to emulate the complexity of the studio recordings. Following this was a tour of Europe in April 2004, where the band played in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Belgium and the Netherlands, with bands such as While Heaven Wept, Indesinence, Officium Triste, Mourning Beloveth, Thee Plague of Gentlemen, Pantheist, and many others.
In 2005, Semmens left the band. Steve Peters left the band in 2007. He was soon replaced by Kris Clayton (ex-Imindain). Joe Fletcher joined on drums in 2007.[3] The 5th album titled The Maniacal Vale and recorded at Priory Recording Studios was released in June 2008.

Frou Frou was a British electronic music duo composed of Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth. They released their only album, Details, in 2002. Both of them write, produce and play instruments on the tracks, while Heap also provides the vocals. - wiki

(the) Human Abstract
The Human Abstract is a progressive metal band influenced by metalcore and neo-classical metal. They are from Los Angeles, California. The band's name references a poem of the same title by William Blake (Songs of Experience, 1794).

Gotta be Iggy! (Iggy Pop and the Stooges, so I think this counts as an "I" <_<)
Basically the founder of punk, the band was WAAAY before their time. Expect a little Doors, a little Rolling Stones, etc, as he was influenced by both of them. And it's surprising how many people don't know thier stuff. :(

Maynard Ferguson!
He's one hard-bopin' trumpet player! Got to be my favorite jazz musician of all time. It's a shame he's past away. Luckily I got to see him perform live 5 years ago. :)
I can't really tell what video this of him I'm posting but I'm sure it's "Give it One" If not, oh well, but it should be Maynard (I'm not 100% sure it's Maynard because I can't get on youtube, just using an old link from an e-mail).
