Hi, i finally decided to start a sketchbook here to seek advises and critiques. Today is the day i step out of my cave and i shall see where this journey will lead me to...

Some studies i done today

Your doing an amazing job on the facial features so far. :)
Feet could use adjustment as with the hands, but sketching with only 2 or three lines isn't exactly easy :P.
Looking good! :)
reme

Zeus12> Thanks, i will try harder :)
Some digital portrait studies(the 2nd is abit fk up haha)..erm i will scan in my sketchbook when i find time x.x

Hey, you have improved since a few months ago, keep up the studies! My advice is to remember to try and nail the proportions before you start to render values etc.

Glad to see you've started a sketchie. Keep it up with the progress!

hoping to start a daily oil practice, lol im very new to oil, this is like my 5th oil painting >_>
alla prima, 2hrs
JS Neo
March 15th, 2009, 03:26 AM
Very good try !! Not a oil expert so i can comment on ur oil painting techniques. but in term of the figure, i think u are able to get the face proportion pretty nicely.. Have to work on ur hands though....
Aaron Death
March 15th, 2009, 03:58 AM
Nice work on that Alla Prima. Agree with Mydrako on the hands though.

mydrako> Thanks for checking out my SB neo ;)
aaron> algenfledger fan :D cool i must be as hardworking as him haha
Thanks for the crit, i will try to work on hands too since i feel portrait + hand is the main thing in drawings for me lol
today's practice, total screw up :ore: :ore:
painting woman faces are extremely difficult, its also very difficult in a front view.... and painting features are really tough X_X
reme

charcoal practice today, i think i will just start with charcoal and occasional oil..
well cause i read a post of jason manley that he started with 2 full complete years of charcoal drawing practicing values :O
haha well thats not really the only reason, oil are expensives, canvas are expensives(ive been reusing canvas but the surface is getting more difficult to paint on :P
anyone know any solution or subsitution for canvas, i dun really need to keep my work cause i scrap the oil off after finishing and taking photo of it. Or i should just purchase those canvas paper?),
and worst of all, cleaning the brushes! damn the oil are so difficult to come off D:
my teacher told me i have not been drawiing enough, so i guess i have to be more hardworking rawrrf
oh the proportions are off, oh wells

portrait practice using charcoal again...i think i will post some watercolors soon need to get my lazy ass to scan stuff haha
as usual, eyes are cocked up lol
JS Neo
March 18th, 2009, 01:04 AM
Ha.. charcoal is a awesome medium. I fell in love with it recently and decide i will stick with it for a long time..
I think you need to detach yourself from the preconceived image of what a eye looks like. I also suffer from this mistake many times, as do everyone just starting out. You really have to draw what u see and not what u feel it should look like.
reme
March 18th, 2009, 03:48 PM
mydrako> yeah, charcoal is awesome. Thanks for the tip
another charcoal thing... err ill scan in watercolors tmr i promise lol

Haa the pig looks ... yummy ... hmmmzzzz
There is some perspective problem with ur still life drawing. Seems to be the same issue. You seems to be looking at the top of the object at a more frontal angle and the bottom of the object at a more slanted angle. The way that works for me is to draw through the object like it is make of glass. Know where is ur eye level and then draw the ellipse accordingly. Hope you understand. :D

May 17th, 2009, 12:35 AM
I like the monet master copy. It has nice brushwork.
For the figure, consider which form is in front of which form and overlap the lines appropriately. The easiest way to show depth is overlapping form and overlapping it wrongly will destroy your picture. Example that line of ur right pelvis seems to cut into your ribcage. That confused the audience which form is further away. If u use the ribcage line and cut it into the pelvis, that will reinforce that the ribcage is in front of the pelvis. This is also the best way to deal with foreshortened limbs. Hope this help. :D

Just took a quick look through your sketchbook. I really liked the speedpainting of the umbrella.
I would advice you to do more observation drawings from people around you, in public places, ask friends to pose or use a mirror. Also try looking into anatomy books. Look for Andrew Loomis.
Keep on it.

June 12th, 2009, 01:21 PM
hey dude, gradually getting better i see, the weight of ur lines are pretty good , i like them for the fast sketches* referring to the Dr Sketchy model, overall a gradual improvement,
be really careful with ur proportion , start out with really light lines ,to mark out the shape and landmarks ,*ect from shoulder to hip, eyes to nose, ect ect.
nice keep it up:)

WAooo thats a whole lots of stuff !!... I like the shawn portrait !! (the one with red hair) Ur control of watercolor is getting much better now.. I hope u can impart some skill to me... I think u still have a general proportion issue. Not sure why but do u draft out the overall size then go into detail or do u develop the piece from one point. One thing that can help is really check ur verticals and horizontals.. plus diagonals though they are not so reliable. Also looking out arcs that connects landmarks together...Probably too much to look out for during quick sketches but if u can check once in a while, i swear they help a great deal.

I like the pattern and color in post 131.. Especially the top area of the painting. It has very interesting shapes and design.
The last painting is not so strong compositionally... The middle section is strangely empty while all the bright colored objects are near the edge of the canvas. I would say u can try removing the left red patch, the bring the yellow sun abit to the right, and make the right tree grow more towards the center of the painting. Maybe... just my 2 cents....

Some good things happening in this sketchbook, some clear improvements from the first page. It's great that you're confident enough to put out some of these more finished works. Your drawings from reference look good, just remember to round off your reference studies with plenty of anatomy drawings from imagination. Just when you're in class or on the bus or whatever, crank out some figures, and slowly your imagined figures will catch up with your reference figures.

Lovely update!!... The illustration turn out pretty good.. Can definitely see the influence of japanese print. The zhangluish portrait look gorgeous too. It has abit of structural issue like the forehead shape is slightly wrong and the you are kinda looking the spherical shape of the right eyeball. Other than that, I love the atmosphere. Keep it up!

Really nice cast drawing and that portrait in painter :) (Excepting the forehead, I agree with JSNeo on his comments).
Might I ask where you're going to school or who you're learning from?

Really enjoying your sketchbook. Your drawings have wonderful character in them and your colors in paintings are excellent too.
