My first official sketch posted on Concept art, my friend JediNinjaMan has been a great friend in showing me this website and all a plethora of other tid-bits of information I value. Well it's no where near pleasant to the eye, but Alas it is a start.
Bring on the criticism.

Hey man just got Corel Painter IX installed 8)
Here is the link to Mentlers anatomy thread (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1159293#post1159293) He has some brilliant stuff in there and if you study it up you will improve really fast, I would break it down into segments and choose different areas to focus on, A good starting point would be some of his facial anatomy stuff.
but ya anyways you should post some more work, the biggest thing I see with the piece you showed us is that the eyes are too high on the face, and the eyes go a little too far back into the head.
here are some more links you should check out these are from mindcanymans Sb he has some very inspiring progress. With hard work and dedication to art, and with the help of the people on this forum look how far he went from being a complete beginner on page 1 in his SB (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=870) to being an art teacher at a collegiate level on page 59 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=870&page=59)
See you Monday keep drawing

good to see you updating, you should try drawing something with out rehatching over your original line just draw one confident definite line and don't re go over it, it will help with your drawings clarity a lot
the eye on the top left looks pretty legit keep it up man and do more than one page of these a day if you can

infact there is no line in the world, and so we should see them as a small shape, no a line.

Hey, thanks for stopping by my SB.
Hmm, try starting out your drawings with your pen set to a low opacity first to work out the general forms and then slowly get darker. I think it will help your lines look less messy.

Hey Zeus thanx for stopping by.
I think it's good that you crit your own work too, even before others can. Add some self critique to your posts. It's the quickest way to be honest with yourself and also to get your intentions across to others, that way the critique will be inline with your energy. It will also make you face your own judgement on where dicipline may be waning or at lack.
Your shading is artistic in a way and might be pretty to look at in some way but generally you would get advice to perhaps change it. Try shading with series of lines and not zigzag strokes for instance. A comment like that might offend if the way you render is part of a personal style or something you don't want to kick.
Cheers.
Will check ya agian.

Thanks Zaor, The zigzag strokes for rendering are just a bad habit I need to kick :P. Thanks!

'ello my hellenic friend
So first of all nice atart to a nice sketchbook. Your kitten is adorable and clearly surprised.
I like your sketches though you should try and paint symetrically, esp the skeleton looks wonky to me.
Your first face study was actually better than your last one. The facial features are just much too low on the pink one and the face and head seem disconnected. Fix that up or just post a new one.
Cheers

Work in progress! :)
Critique please! and thanks again for the comments everyone, I know there is alot better work out there.
NOTICE, I'm not trying to duplicate Mentlers Sketch, I'm just using it as a reference.
But, as Bruce Lee would say!
"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times"
Not anything closely related to my sketches, but a awesome quote.

The general form of the head seems wrong. The skull itself should be longer and the ear lower.
Try copying a referenced pic. Just try once and if you hate it leave it.

Hey there! It's really obvious how hard you're working. You might feel a bit more encouraged if you start at something simpler, though...have you checked out Idiot Apathy's Peer Project (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76955) or Bumskee's Digital Painting thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...107217&page=22)? You'll find the basic shapes and techniques introduced in those threads really helpful for rendering much more complex subjects like people. Also, for training your eye, a beginner's text that a lot of people seem to love is Betty Edward's Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (http://www.amazon.com/New-Drawing-Right-Side-Brain/dp/0874774195/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234635034&sr=8-1). Hope that helps!

Good to see you are working hard.
I think I am with everyone when I say try to clean up those lines! Draw lightly if you aren't sure.
A lot of your faces lack structure, I think you need to work on making sure you put that in from the start, even if it is just a few lines to figure out where the eyes should go, ect.

polipol- Thank you for your advance and encouragement my friend! :o)! question what is a cast ?

hey zeus12
I am totally seeing some improvement. The faces are getting better, but one thing I noticed, something I do, too, is that on some face-on portraits the right eye seems to be higher up than the left one...
Check it.

You're on the right track. I'm getting the impression that most of these studies are from other art or imagination, if that is the case one thing I recommend is drawing from life more and really looking at your subject. This will develop your eye and help you see relation ships between shapes and make the anatomy come easier. Other than that just keep drawing.

Great progress, Zeus! I love that portrait that's on the left-hand side of the fifth scan down in post 39.These latest scans are fantastic, too. Your progress is scary good. At this rate, I can't wait to see where you'll be in a year's time. :)

Ugh, still been sleeping like a cow. I'm clinically in a coma, There is no other explanation for my tiredness. z z z z z .....
P.S. for my numerous fans (probably 2 or 3 ) I've been drawing a bunch in me ol' moleskin but I have yet to scan anything in (blame the coma). I'll try to launch a larger update this weekend. But, for now I give you Stinky Caesar!

Hey Zeus! Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook man! :)
You're improving a lot, that's for sure! When I look at the portraits from your first posts and then look at the more recent ones, they're a LOT better, really! Nice to see that :) Maybe try experimenting with a different method of shading? I have always been total crap with shading till I recently started drawing with a 3B pencil (in the past I always used an HB or pen etc) and the 3B works so much better for me when I look at my shading... Unless, of course, the shading with the lines is your preferred style, which doesn't look bad either in the later ones! But when you're going digital it might help you to experiment with a different kind of shading.
See you around!

The profiles are quite nice, there is some meat missing at the back though. The expression is nice though. Are you going for realism? If yes, you should study some more. From foto and life!
Getting better!
