Hey man, some good drawings in here! Keep working on them. Keep practicing the digital painting too. Research into the basics of painting and work on them one by one and you could start evolving with the new found knowledge :D

batcustard

Thankyou, I usually bring all of my digital paints to oilpainters and ask what they think. Its hard sometimes to get them to realize that the values aren't thrown out the window and so in turn hard to get harshness out of them. Which by the way people: rip me into molecular bits, thats what the internet is for... Or I mean, you don't have to be nice, because you are just the disembodied voices of experience and I can't hold it against you.

Recently I have been playing with the idea of giving the viewer slightly conflicting depth information.

anyways awesome to hear good things from somebody of your standard.
also I made this and I think it hilarious:

working on figuring out how to get this character and his robot to fly. I want the robot have good sideways movement but bad up movement so it has to actually swing him upwards and then when his torque is taking care of his weight ... then the robot can move upwards while he sits almost suspended for a quarter second. Its not working yet but I think its sellable.

rough robot sheet.

Swordhand
February 3rd, 2009, 05:48 PM
Wow! that's really cool. I think the speed at which the robot rises when it actually does is is why its not working, but nonetheless really cool work.

the blurryness is simply a harsh fact of life Im afraid.

MyOrangeHat
February 7th, 2009, 01:36 AM
Yeah I don't have a scanner either so I use a digital camera and everything is blurry for me too. If I light it well enough sometimes it's not quite as bad but it's never crisp like a scanner.
I really like your sketchbook. The amount of movement and gesture you get into a figure is making me want to switch majors so I can learn that too! I really like your faces and expressions too. Nice stuff. I'll definitely check back to see more. :)

When I was young, a motivational speaker came. He wore a cardboard box spray painted silver, pockmarked with dials and lights built from paper and pigment. When he first skulked onto stage, I knew those springloaded tubes on this cardboard abominations body housed human legs.

He stood in front of the mic for a few moments, soaking what I suppose he imagined was awe. In reality I believe it was confusion.
"hello dudes and dudettes!" he said enthusiastically.

Thanks to that man I will always be tempted to use that phrase, and I guess more importantly: thanks to that phrase I will always be tempted to remember that man.

Life, life, life, life!

I wanna see more life drawings!

Even if you're going for a cartoony style, drawing from life will give you the skills to better understand and organize what you see. You'll be able to take that back to your cartoons and they will be much more believable because of it.

Janos
February 15th, 2009, 04:21 AM
I actually like your cartoon characters, but DeeLock is right: Life drawings me want. The animation with the flying robot is just too fast to read I'm afraid. Slow it down if possible.
The expressions on the characters is very nice.

batcustard

Let me explain my situation: I am graduating this semester after a long vicious education. So everything in here is being produced for my final animation or being made between classes. Basically when I come to the digital surface for air, this place gives me a little spring in my step. When time presents itself, lifedrawings will come, I promise. Until then, digital paints=me alone in a room.

But really thanks for dropping by, and Im sure I need to hear it too from time to time.

Nettle_Mountain
February 15th, 2009, 04:26 AM
well, posemaniacs are nice then and then...

Nice cartoon style, good drawing skills as well, just draw more and little more solid if you like

It's bit hard to say anything coherent from blurry sketches or digitals

I really enjoy the animation stuff, and you've got some nice colors. It'd be cool to see some of your concepts in a more finished form. :)

jvdz
April 4th, 2009, 07:45 AM
Nice stylisation (sp?) going on. Going to look cool once slapped together with those fun characters moving about that world. Keep experimenting! Coloring on the 1951's-pic shows progress. Looking good. I'm not so sure about that on the purple one, but hey it's a sketch. The character in red has the best feel to it.
On the coloring subject: you might wanna take a look at the Practical light and color dvd from g.n.o.m.o.n. That's just a treasure trove of information. It helps to form your own point of view as it's suggesting to look very closely to the things around you. How light affects the color and so on. Might be stating the obvious, but the information is so true and you keep getting back at it every once in a while.
Keep grinding!

best wishes,
Jan van der Zee

batcustard
July 27th, 2009, 01:25 AM
Got out of college, moved from Pennsylvania USA to Victoria Australia. Ive been drawing in physical mediums pretty much non-stop. I just need to bring it all into the wired.

It will be nice to be part of a dialog again. Monologuing has been a bit tedious.

Yeah that character was 3d.

I think I am going to flesh that mask thing out into a full narrative. This would probably be the first bit, or close to it.

Grandmaster: I think its because the face is made up of more delicate linework, which when competing with neon pink, needs a little help to bounce back to center. Also the move went extremely well. Melbourne is pretty much the bees knees.

Im moving back and fourth between two comps for the first page after the prologue, which will consist of some of those bald images and a bunch of abstract chaos. Then I want to build the story up to that point. Starting from here.

Anyways... seth is a real person and I was thinking of using this in the first bit its something he wrote that sticks with me.

Elegy for quiche in June

In the northwest corner of Pennsylvania, south

of lake Erie, my bedroom sits elevated and small,

its windows ten feet from the ground and painted

shut. Sometimes, I leave my door open, to air it, so

it’s not quite as stuffy. Sometimes I look

to my dresser, and beside my mother’s image

stands cousin Sicily Rae, who lives

in Austin. I can see my reflection in her

hair, glossed over. I think she looks

like my mother’s sister’s daughter. We’ve never

met and, on my nightstand, she’ll never look

less real or even different. Or any more

like Sicily Rae now, who is no longer a little girl.

I have so many memories of June bugs

in summer, when I would see just how many

I could catch. Always walled into a shell,

black and feeling with antennae against my

hands. Holding onto one a short while, I’d let her

go when she pushed just so at the creases

between my fingers. I found one dead in my room

once, legs stiff like knitting needles

poking from my mother’s tote. I thought it funny

how she loved to make me quiche: spinach and

tomato patched together like a quilt. It was her

mother’s recipe; she hoped I would make it too.

But I was never any good at baking. It seems

so long ago, I can’t remember the ingredients.

Thanks for dropping by man. I like the stylished stuff you do. That's your strongest point. But like you allready are keep on working on the realistic stuff as well. WIll greatly benefit your overall work. The biggest issue I think is that you tend to get a bit muddy. When being stylished make sure you got clean lines and no small interuptions. That will probably bring you a level up

Hello.
I see that you have this sketcbhook for quite a long time now.
That is so great, it shows how serious you are about your
artistic intentions.
I totally agree with you about the annoying upload procedure.
As your art is concerned, I like it very much, but unfortunately
I cannot give you some smart advices, cause I am not exactly
in the same waters as you are with these paintings. I am just
a self taught artist, with weak all around skills.
I wish you to have at least half of a motivation power as you
had till now, and you will serve something serious to the world in
the near future.
Take care and keep posting.

Yeah man it was WAY too long, that project is pretty old I have since abandoned that project about a year ago, I should just change my sig. It was one of those situations where I couldn't figure out how to spice it up without putting double the work into it, and cutting it down burst the purpose. I should update the link :D.

I'm thinking of trying to do something with the spirit animals as a cute animation, but need to really push story elements around first this time.

and limit myself to 25 seconds.

A little more work on that previous model, I'm starting to think the refs I'm using are of a guy with scoliosis which is maybe not the greatest idea.
LT: Thanks for dropping by, you have a really positive vibe which I dig in a big bad way. Haha, maybe it's just the white soothing text?

Stylized drawing EH, I have a suggestion for your SB. Did you ever try to
make a collage with all the images you have, than post it.

Just look at my stuff I just post maybe in a few month, but one page contains
a lot of inspiration. Not so much scrolling and more for the eye on one page.

Anyway, cool stuff I like it !!!

Cout: Man I miss Z-brush. My name is Zee, so I got really excited when it came out and I could use it. I was like "yeah, ironic styles!" but I don't have access to it anymore. I'm making everything in maya. Let me give you some advice in return though, mainly about Zbrush. There is no sense in taking a FUBAR model into Zbrush, it never fixes problems. Zbrush is really just an intensifier. So if you have a good model it makes it look fucking awesome, but if it's even a little off, it makes it look crazy weird.

Andres: Of course I respect your work man! You have an insanely solid grasp of depth and the angles of surfaces. You have mad formal styles and I don't know how somebody, like me, who draws pictures couldn't do that.

LAL posted in my sketchbook EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Beatles groupie styles!

Anyways BATCUSTARD.COM is MINE! So this might be the beginning of a lot of pictures of bats and custard.

I posted a progression of the bat so that you guys get an idea of how I do shit.

1) basic shape with color
2) rough drawing linework
3) slightly different take on linework
4)*this almost always happens* A return to the shapes in step(2) with a few elements from(3)
5) Use colors from step 1, refine and post!

Hey dudes, still awake.
Did some more character sketches, thinking about starting up a webcomic?
I mean, I realize there are about 5 billion of them already, but I think my style and speed would be refined by the process and it would be a good thing to link up with my reel?

Don't know.
The second piece is just me trying to demostrate something for the artist that does samurai vs. Zombies.

I don't exactly highly recommend the comic, but I have a weakness for clearly western created fo-anime samurai demon stories.

... trying to figure out how these images connect.

I find that when I plan stories I can only do it in a series of imagined images that I find intriguing. But I often end up in this exact situation where i'm like "ok he definitely has sheep and he has a raincoat... and he sees a person who is bleeding... but why?"

Hey thanks for commenting on my sketchbook I really appreciate it. You've got some great stuff here, I'm really digging your sketchy expressive style, the thanksgiving piece has so much motion and expression in it. I hope to see more like that. I really really like your work, one question:

What program do you use ???

I am (because I am an Animator) sketching around in flash I like the way
the vectors act if you edit them in flash, Illustrator is more complicated
for that kind of work and I can't animate it there.

Anyway I will pop in if I have more time and see what your story is about !!
