OOOh nice colour work :D.
Id like to see you put a bit more emphasis on describing form using lighting, if you look at your stuff you are using the silhouettes alone to describe the form, which isn't good, (though it does show that you have good silhouettes.) I think the most prominent example is this one.

@muzzoid: Yeah I need to brush up my skill in describing form using lighting. I noticed that is one of my big mistake when doing speed painting from my early attempt till now though not as frequent as it used to be. :P Thanks again for pointing up the problem!
@hunchbackmagee: I will explore more on silhouette in future sketches! :)
Two old 30 mins sketches I did last year.

Your stuff is amazing :)
I wanna see some pencils :)
Huey Yeng
February 25th, 2009, 02:21 PM
Wilko: Thanks! I'll be posting more old stuff next week since college stuff is choking me up.
L0rin: Yup speedies since I spent less than 1-2 hours for most sketches. You can look at m@, vyle or pao sketchbook which are some of my fave speedie artists. :D
Straseenpenner08: I do have lots of old pencil work. Will remember to post some in future post. :)
Here's something different than my usual speedies. Actually it is just old stuff I did for college assignments last 2 years. The first one is Prismacolor colour pencil on colour paper and the second one using watermark texture in an artwork digitally.
Obviously not as fun as doing speedies but sometimes we just have to do some finish work once in a while. :)

So I manage to get a copy of Photoshop CS4 and manage to play around with it. Heck Photoshop CS4 have make me neglected my college assignments. :D
I absolutely love the brush resize shortcut which actually speed up my workflow since I not used to right clicking to open up the brush menu to adjust the brush size. Not to forget the dynamic canvas rotation. Now it behaves more like Painter.:hatsoff:
Two more speedies from me done in Photoshop CS4. 2 hourish each.

Your enviros really show perfectly how one gets better by exercising. The onses you posted from last year are a lot flater and uninteresting, the new ones are really special. Though you definitely are overusing the typical "two people coming over a ledge and seeing a gigantic impressive panorama before their eyes". I say change that up a bit. Nice work so far.
Also, if you study anatromy as much as enviros you would be even better.
Cheers

March 15th, 2009, 11:14 AM
Janos you are really right about me. :p Been doing the same thing all over again is really a bad habit of mine (which you are going to see it again in this post lol). :D Since I'm going to finish my study at college this coming April, I'm going back to basic training to brush up my fundamentals from scratch again.
Here is *ahem* another two people over a ledge speedie again. Both are less than 30 mins each because of thunderstorm few hours ago that forced me to shutdown the comp.

@Alextooth: Thanks! David Levy's tutorial is one of the best I've ever done and actually kickstart me to do more scenery work.
So my college study will coming to an end soon and darn I need to push myself more when I have the free time. :D
Some more crappy 1 hour speedies:

I actually started out drawing seriously with manga style way back in 2000 and occasionally draw in that style once in a while and less when I go to college. ): So more crappy manga work ahead--

Since I completed my college studies 2 weeks ago, I've decided to go back to basic training to brush up my foundation skill which I think I'm severely lacking.
I admit I'm pretty much wasted my 3 years of pursuing my diploma in illustration and still suck really bad (or I just suffer from inferiority complex--).
The good part about ConceptArt community is how helpful and active of them to help each other so I decided to be more serious in my endeavour. Plus observing other people progress from absolute rookie to professional artist from their very own sketchbook thread further inspires me that self motivation and practice is not impossible.
Still I aim to polish up my skills before my 21st birthday (this coming July) and hope my own self practice/learning will make me a wiser and better artist compare to my college life. :)
Since I came back from my hometown last Friday to my rented room nearby to college, I have been on a daily grind of sketching. I will upload my daily progress starting tomorrow. :D
So if TLDR, here's my art dump I did after college ends.

I like this painting. Some part are still reading flat to me. I would expect stronger rim lighting on the man walking forward and some of the blades grass as well. So it would make things pop out and 3d.
Just a thought, would a river or water be going through the center of the painting.

nice updates.. its great to see that your really focusing on anatomy.. just keep in mind that you shouldn't just draw what you see, but instead try to really understand the shape of muscles, their functions, their origins and insertions, and general proportions. it will really help you when it comes to drawing your own figures in any poses. keep it up

@miycko: I didn't refer to any reference for the 5 hours speed paint. You can spot when the structure and the soldier armours looks really plain. But sometimes I like just trying to pull things from the air and see what is the end result without any reference.

Great work, especially on the painting. Something I have noticed though: You do whole pages of great studies from loomis/bridgman/etc, but when it comes to your originals, they then to have issues (This is something that I'm guilty of too). A good remedy for this is to, once you finish a study, find a relevant photograph and try to apply the methods you studied in a drawing of it. Attempting to re-draw your studies from memory helps too.

hey man.. i just realized i've got a lot of feedback from you but never visited your sb yet.. : /
really good stuff going on in here! keep doing those quick once.. but try to mix it up with some really long-time-spent studies or whatever once in a while to get accuracy down.
keep separating shapes by temperature.. adds a lot of feeling and depth to your pieces..! and make sure you apply those anatomy studies in one way or the other or they will slip your mind eventually ;) don't just do studies without using them 'for something' is what i really mean :) keep rocking!

Crap my internship at Sony left me exhausted and screw up my body clock real bad. Only free time I get is during weekends and there is some unfinished sketches I left at the office which I still haven't copy to my flash drive.
So far even though the internship is for art students, I felt like it is supposed to be called as internship for office boy/girl students... @.@ Not sure if I want to quit after I get my 1st month paycheck as I rarely do any art assignments.

very nice stuff , absolutely love the battle line scene , i suggest going forward with that ... anatomy on the other hand , need lot's more work , do some loose sketches cuz your poses look rather stiff , and wold be good for the flow , try to do as many as you can in couple of minutes, usually that's how i loosen up my wrists before i start drawing ^^

try not to get sucked into the trap of looking at concept art to inspire your concept art. dig back through art history and find artists who's work can push your style. especially in regards to landscapes, environments and illustration. i see a lot of paintings that look a lot like what i do when i've been browsing concept art too exclusively. check out some of the more popular russian landscape guys, especially. oh, and paint them from life. no other way to really get a feel for how light interacts with the world than to observe it!
impressive amount of progress around here. keep doing what you're doing!

theories: When I'm really young I'm more influenced by UK comics style (Beano, Dandy) and manga aimed for children (comics by Fujio F Fujiko who create Doraemon). Later I got exposed to shonen manga (Dragonball rocks!) and my drawing style have been influenced by these comics. Soon I'm a sucker for US comics and of course seeing lots of beautiful conceptual artwork for film/games had led me to practice the fundamentals before attempting for realism works. Is a life long process and I enjoy any art style as long it is enjoyable. :P
the man with no name: Thanks glad you learn something from my sketchbook. We always learn new stuff from others and of course the same applies vice versa. :)
ilmenhim: Thanks!
miycko: Can't remember but I did the whole piece during lunch break. I think it is around 40 mins. Actually the little girl is my fastest sketch (and the last face of the bunch) as it is mostly airbrushing and less on rendering. Surprisingly it looks the best for me... o3O

Huey Yeng
October 5th, 2009, 12:40 PM
@PigeonKill: I need to practice more on focal point in my future sketches. Thanks for pointing out. :P Zhang Lu approach in rendering portraits is rather simple but the execution of using only soft and hard brush in Photoshop is amazing.
He started out by creating a neutral tone and lightly draw out the construction line. Slowly he block in with soft brush by building up the darker tone and later refine some parts using a hard brush. Finally he airbrush the lighter tone and polish it up using hard brush.
So in practice the flow should be: Fill neutral tone -> Construction line -> Soft Brush (Darker Tone) -> Hard Brush -> Soft Brush (Lighter Tone) -> Hard Brush
@miycko: Yeah its one of those weekends where we don't draw much... :}

@Mischeviouslittleelf: Thanks dude! Your progress is coming along too. :)
@Pigeonkill: That bee girl is a birthday giftart for my friend. xD Its a fan art of Liechtenstein from Hetalia. The bee is well my friend since she adores the character a lot. Wish I could continue refining the desert pic but somehow I find the composition boring... Will do another version of it as portfolio piece since I dig the idea a lot. :)
Quicky sketches in Photoshop. Now I've been relying less on textures brush and more on simple brush since I somewhat irked when I need to work in SAI only to find their textures settings somewhat limited compared to Photoshop. Well less is more I guess.

new one is looking great. the only thing i can recommend is to add some variety to the image overall. play around with the clouds more. throw in some elements at an opposing angle to the general 45 degree thing you have going now (like something slanting from lower left towards upper right, for instance). and the colors are just begging for a complimentary splash here and there, city lights being the obvious choice :P
anyway. great work!

January 15th, 2010, 06:35 AM
good stuff man, your environments are really well done!
The anime stuff is looking good, very clean lines. However I think you could work on the way you're stylising the the limbs, they can be sort of stick like and dont portray the form very well (especially in the legs of the pokemon character commissions) the joints look slightly weird . Think about the techniques of stretch and pinch when dealing with human figure, you can simplify, stylise - make them skinnier, curvier etc but a figure is still a figure so when simplified its actually more difficult as one curve wrong and it looks could look off :(
I guess what I'm trying to say is try approaching your anime work in the same mindset as you approach any other figure work, but obviously make the stylistic decisions to turn it into anime, rather than approach it in a completely different mindset altogether.
I'm liking the designs though, keep working hard!

to get the perspective just right on those rollerblade wheels, you might try blocking them in as a rectangles and then plotting ellipses on the sides of those rectangles. might help with what is no doubt crazy confusing !
that portrait at the end of page 7 is aaaawesome. great job on that one.

@Giorge: Haha you noticed it eh. :D
@sourgasm: Thanks for the tips. Too bad I already done with that piece. :o
So my internship application with Lucasfilm Singapore got rejected (oh noez 2 more months and I set a new record of being jobless for a year) and currently focusing on Danny Choo's mascot contest. Deadline is on Sunday and well after that will be Chinese New Year festive. Need to brusssh up my skills and portfolio.
I still find it amusing that Lucasfilm Jobs sent me email about my status on the internship application "May the Force...well...you know" :P
A collection of dump of my mascot design for DC mascot contest. The first pic is the final work (not the best background I've drawn):

More dump. Mix of Painter and Photoshop stuff. Gosh my eyes must have gone awkward with all the mistakes I noticed after sketching it out. x_x Time to sleep.

@AlexTooth: Thanks bro! Anime style can be really subjective but for whatever reason it starting to creep into the global market at a fast pace. ;P
@DHTenshi: Thank you! I use the smudge tool a lot for the cloud study.
Hmm I will be away till next Tuesday to celebrate Chinese New Year at my dad's hometown. Not sure if I want to lug my tablet with me as there is no space for me to put the tablet and lappy together. o_O
Also started my first out of 50 studies of Leyendecker work. Its darn hard to replicate his "creamy" stroke digitally

@longwrat: Thanks for the comment! Haha my quick stuff is consider lazy man work-- Also nearly forgot to wish you Gong Xi Fa Cai!
@mc2mc2: Yo bro Gong Xi Fa Cai! :D After Photoshop crash that night, I finish it in Paint Tool SAI with the Acrylic brush. I set the Blending to a higher value to emulate Leyendecker creamy strokes.
Another Leyendecker study. That makes it 2 out of 50 studies.

I wanted to try finish this study in Painter 11 but the uber slow panning puts me off a lot. So I revert back to Paint Tool SAI and finish it from there.
I'm still amazed with Leyendecker economy of strokes... need to do more study. :x

@sourgasm: Thanks bro! Dang I didn't realize its already half a month since I took up my current freelance job. Been itching to continue my sketchbook after seeing everyone own killer updates. :)
@Mike Butkus: It's always an honour to see your comment sir! :)
@DHTenshi: Thank you! The cabinet in the last indoor scenery still bugs me whenever I see it but I'm glad you like it. :D
@Brinkman!: Hey dude thanks a lot for the Leyendecker scans! I manage to track down a used copy from a seller in Singapore and I can't wait to get my hand on the book so I can analyze his work more with clearer details. :)
@Turbosnail: Same to you buddy!
Been pretty busy with my current freelance job which keeps dragging the deadline. I hope the client can lockdown everything by this week and I'm not really fond of delay stuff as it affects my own schedule (driving test, applying lots of scholarship to pursue a degree, sketchbook!!).
After seeing the scholarship winner lists, I need to get my ass working back in full speed and I know I still have a lot of things to catchup. Bad habit of mine but I know the only way to succeed in the industry is to work on my fundamentals before attempting something crazier. :D

suppaaa haaanzzz , i see lot's of good hands amongst those studies but is the poorly drawn ones you have to look for, they hold the answer to your questions. Try to alternate the Bridgman's studies with studies from live model , helps understand much better and faster
