Does anyone know or has anyone here done a fashion design course by distance learning (online)?

Cheers

Only two seasons were good. The rest slid into garbage!

I am somewhat nonplussed by the whole "online course" style of learning. I think there is a lot to be said for classes where there are other students present and you can see what everyone else is doing as well and directly communicate with the teacher.

What do you want to learn about fashion design? The drawing itself? Pattern making? Sewing? Because I have a degree in fashion design and the actual drawing is less than 25% of the time, you learn what the traditional fashion proportions are (too tall) and then a bit of figure and drape drawing, and learn how to render different types of fabric and how to do technical orthos. I'm not sure it's really worth studying by itself for someone who can already illustrate.

Hey Chup,

Know what I did? When I wanted to get into designing fashion for characters or just in general, I picked up two books: 1 was 100 years of fashion illustration & the other was a book that shows the fashion of movies from the 20's to about 2001.

Very enjoyable reads and good visuals. :D

Academy of Art University based in SF has some GREAT online courses. I pulled up their summer course catalog and they had two intro courses:

Fashion Design I: http://catalog.academyart.edu/courseCatalog.do?triggerName=offerSemesters&lo_course=13-99&lo_grad=both&lo_preCollege=false&lo_department=20-4&lo_semester=57-1075

Fashion Illustration I: http://catalog.academyart.edu/courseCatalog.do?triggerName=offerSemesters&lo_course=13-108&lo_grad=both&lo_preCollege=false&lo_department=20-4&lo_semester=57-1075

The first has some prerequisites, but you could probably email the instructor and let her know that you're not in it for credit and bypass those. Good luck. =)
