Hello all! I'm yet another lurker who has decided to post. This may sound like a stupid question, but here goes. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for how to go about drawing what one sees as opposed to what one thinks is there, because I have a lot of trouble with this. Even if I focus really hard, I end up either missing things, or drawing something the way I have seen it drawn before, as opposed to how it looks in my reference. I was hoping someone could give me an idea of how to get out of this habit. Thanks for any advice!

I suggest reading the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. That really helped me.

lots of drawing from Life. The reason you draw what you think is you have not learned about what it is you are seeing. try drawing something you are totally familiar with, a car, a computer, something that is involved in your life everyday, and you know it inside and out. WHy was it so wasy, or is it so wasy to draw? You are totally familiar with it.

Life drawing makes you aware of what you need to stay familiar with regardless of the subject matter you are drawing from life. it makes you aware of a way of seeing things, knowing things, more importantly, observing things...
