Looking to buy a digital camera?

Well I'm not a professional photographer or anything. But I do need something that can take a good picture especially for my work when the scanner isn't sufficient. I can afford to spend up to $300 (hopefully less). And it needs to have some longevity also.

Try dpreview.com (http://www.dpreview.com/). Just as a warning however, $300 in digital pretty much means you're stuck with a "point and shoot" unless you find a good deal on a dslr on ebay or in a pawn shop.

Take a look at Canon cameras, I find they have the most features for mid range cameras. In the 200 to 500 range you can get a camera with 8 Mega Pixels, shutter speed options, F stop, ISO, custom white balance, and a range of flash output. I have a Power Shot A720 IS and I'm very happy with it.

Something within the Canon Powershot line will fit your budget. You might want to look into renting a camera first to see if it will meet your needs before buying. Photography shops typically rent gear.

$300 can get a pretty decent cameras. All digital cameras have come a long way.

Image quality won't differ by much. Main thing to take note of is the functionality.

you could take pretty good pictures with a camera phone if you set the lighting up nicely

What's your budget? The reason I'm asking is that it will depend on waht you're willing to spend, it's no point suggesting a super duper professional camera if you can't afford it :)

I'll tell ya, the best camera I've ever had (and still have!) is the Canon Powershot SD1000. It's perfect for just about every situation I need it in, with the occasional exception of a night sky, but I think if I knew how to use more settings on the camera I could get a better shot. Anyway, I got it for about $300 US dollars, last year in May, and I'd loved it from the first day I got it. It takes really high quality pictures, IMO, and has a good price tag on it.

I carry it around with me everyday in case a good reference picture shows up, or if I want to just take a picture of something cool. It has a really fast shutter speed to catch quick pictures like this:

Now, I'm not going to pretend to be a photography buff, because I'm not, I only know a little about it and even less about the best cameras out there and everything to look for in a good camera, but all of this is in my personal experience with digital cameras over the years. If you need something to take reference pictures or pictures of your artwork, or maybe even some digital photography, this camera would probably be perfect for you. :) I use mine on a daily basis.

Anyway, I love the camera and I think it was worth every penny I spent on it and more. Now, it says it's about $300 dollars on Amazon, but I'm sure you can look around the web to find it cheaper ;)
