Thanks to davi for making another weird and awesome sound file for COW :)
ADDITIONAL INFO
1. This is a special round. There is no written topic. Listen to the sound file to hear what noises the creature makes and come up with a nice creature design and concept based on the sounds.
2. No individual/character!!! Make a concept of a species!

yoitisi: Been on a break but as I noticed you picked up the ball where the Muppet (Fozz our hero) left it. I started to think of what I was hoping in the year to come. The sound creatures where the first thing that came to mind.
I bow. And Davi your'e da man
Sounds like a symphony of creatures.

So here my idea. I thought of an insectoid dinosaur living in swampy terrain and having a great lung capacity thanks to the giant air sacks at the side of its head.
Here a VERY early wip. The spikes/quills are going to be really glossy black and the skin green/blue. The sacks a magenta colour echoing the colour of some special flowers in the swamps.

Heliocentric: There have been two previous rounds that were called 'Sound Creature'. The idea for the rounds are the same, it's just that the sound is different each time. This is a new round all by itself and has no relation to the earlier Sound Creature rounds other than that you're supposed to design a creature based on the sound you hear.

Hey everyone, you all got some fine ass creatures, this sound is insane, ive probably listened to it like 30 times now. Pictured it as a swampy creature sort of like a big newt/dinosaur mixed with fen striders and spore bats and nether rays from WoW :P.
Just got some sketches right now, been trying to work out some colors for them, but nothings really working. Had the idea of purples, blues, blue-greens, and pinks and reds.

WIP
The Squeeler. Deep in the ancient Cretaceous rain forest a pig like creature survived amid the giagantic dinosaurs that roamed the earth. Two or three males would forage away from the females and babies, always on the look out for the many carnivorous dinosaurs that found the squeelers a delightful snack. Once the male squeeler sees a predator, it lets off an annoying noise, both warning the herd and attracting the predator. On its back, long colorful quills will raise up, adding to the attraction of the squeeler, though offering no other protection. With the predator's full attention, the male squeeler with then run as fast as it can away from the herd, effectivily luring the predator away from it and allowing the herd to get to safety. However, many times this ends in tragedy for the male squeeler, sarcaficing itself for the herd.

Janos - I like what u got going so far, they look kinda like hair, but it looks good. Maybe some more strong highlights in the "hair" could make it look more like quills.
Wiggers - Awesome, very good orignal design, maybe the green glowing orbs on his behind could be a bit more yellowish green? or better yet not at all, it just seems a bit overkill on "gadgets".
Edengottercyan - That last one looks great, i would go for that one
Wolfentir - nice sketches, gotta love skulls. but remeber its supposed to be a species not a character. :!:
Scotwith1t nice sketch, i think his hips are a bit high up, looks a bit like he's mooning right now haha, also it would be nice to also draw the quills on him, keep at it!
edit - forgot page 1 haha
Defiledvisions - nice work, no crits from me. just wanna c it finished
Jburough - good sketch, like the middle design best
fury03 - i like it so far, maybe he's missing his left wing?
peg - lol i like him :yayca:
T Turill - Ow my, that middle one on the left looks so great, nice linework
Kingkostas - Hey, ur finished one has nice vibrant colours. but maybe it could use some more detail? their is still time left!
MoHog - Hey, its shows very little of the anatomy of the creature
Siiilon - Hehe He looks cute, just minding his own business
Heliocentric - Good sketch, but watch the no human anatomy rule
Tipa - Cant really tell atm, detail it out more please

@ Joey-b Thanks for the advice. I treid the sharp highlights and they were not working for me. When I've aded the background I'll see if I'll paint them in.
Here another little update
siiilon
January 29th, 2009, 05:06 PM
I don't feel to be the right person to give advices, but here are my opinions:
Janos: I like your both versions, although I like the first one much more. It's more varied. For colors I would suggest more different colors for foreground and background. Try to look at any animal which has similar visual equipment that you like to express on this one.
Joey-b: I love the head, so maybe try several concepts for the rest of the body to fit the whole.
Kasteyrn: Interresting concept. I suggest leaving colors and concentrate more on shape. Take your pencil and try different gestures, find good angles, tune the proportions, .... . Good black-n-white is enought for COW I think. Once you feel yourself more confortable with grayscale you could add colors to push it even further.
MoHog: Nice one, but remember, it's about the whole body.
Heliocentric: I like it, but what made those sounds of steps if your creature is moving kinda like snake? >:)

Thanks Joey, I appreciate the advice. Lowered the hips a bit, changed the small tail so it doesn't look like he's mooning too much. I did want to make it look like he's bent down, like he was foraging for food in the mud. Added the quills, but they need a lot of work.

Think I should start over and do a different pose/make some changes?
No, finnish this one. But I think that colors lead you far away from actual creture design. When you have your pencil/pen in your hand, you can concentrate yourself more on essential things like shape, proportions, character, etc. Once something looks nice scribbled on paper you can push it further with more details, tones, colors, background. But the gesture, motion, composition is all within the initial sketch. If it isn't there, nor colors nor background, nor details will solve it.
Kasteyrn
January 30th, 2009, 07:53 AM
I see what you're saying and totally agree with it. I'm relying way too much on the background image to make my creature stand out... I removed the background and flipped the image around some to get a good look at it and it didn't seem all so great as when I had started. So I got out the old sketchbook and did some rethinking and am deciding to take a 'strictly business' approach. As in, it's more about the creature without the eye candy. I think if I carried on with the previous one, I would have just ignored my errors.
But yeah, thanks man. I'm thankful for all help as I'm new here and a fairly new artist.

A crreature that haunts the deepest, darkes areas of the world. It attracts prey to it with the glowing masses on its body. While completly blind it has excellent hearing, and is quick and agile.
If standing up strait it would be just taller than an adult human, but prefers to scuttle in a crouched manner.

dwinbotp: Such a cool painting. I like the idea with those airsacks. That's what I had in mind too when I heard those "bubbly" sounds in the begining^^ like a frog
Wolfentir: really cool design!
T_Turrill: those sketches are awesome. so many great shapes in there!
I just found out about this topic today, so here's what I've made so far.
after the sound clip I was thinking, swamp, "froggy airsacks bubbles", heavy creature. Felt it wouldent fit well with just a pure heavy chunck of creature
so made long thin "lightweight fireflies tentacles" to fit into the highpitched sound you hear in the beginning.

Hi there,
really awesome stuff around...
I went pretty straight forward: Snarling Noise & scream = Strange, multiple nostrils & big, overlapping mouth
Person running away= Predator
And this is the result...
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h162/Finstar_one/SoundcreatureFinal3Kopie31000.jpg
Concept:
The only hint at the origin of this predator is a myth told among the Nibuuru Nomads:
"Long time ago the daughter of a tribe chief had a serious wound infection from a dingo's bite on her hand. The chief ordered the tribal shaman to heal her. The shaman, doing the best he could, managed to heal her with his herbs and potions. But the infection had already done serious damage, so in order to heal her he had to amputate parts of her hand.
When the chiefsman heard about this, he raged because a crippled tribal daugther was not worth enough to be married anymore. He punished the shaman for not healing her in time by letting all of the shamans fingers being cut off and buried somewhere in the dusty bushland earth, so he could not find and perhaps heal them with his magic.
The shaman, full of anger due to this injustice and his crippling, spoke a silent curse.
The next full moon, fromt the buried fingers grew bony creatures crawling out of the earth. Ever since then, the Bushland Stalkers are following the Nibuuru Tribes to feed upon anybody leaving the camp at night alone."
But who believes in myths anyway...?
I especially like dwinbtops (altough at the first moment I thought it was coming out of a giant wave of Seawater, which looked great) and wiggers
Edit: Used the exta time to pimp it a little...and there I was promising myself not to do glowing eyes anymore...next time, I swear...

anywayz, to little time left now.. try concentrating on the next and start with pencil on that one

Damn, I am cutting this fine. Sorry to be posting so late. After listening to the clip, I was sure the creature was not one I would want to meet under any conditions. Therefore, after doing some thumbnails, I chose the most ferocious looking of the three to continue.
These creatures produce a blood curdling howl before attacking. Unfortunately, that usually means you are the one in the way and soon to be devoured. Not much is known about this species as they have proved far too dangerous for serious study but from what we do know, they are smart, very fast and extremely territorial! They inhabit the marshlands and swamped forest regions of Thrakar Prime and since that planet is mostly forest and swamp, they are the top predator for the whole planet.

I still have some details to work on and to decide if I want to do some sort of BG.

I think this'll be my final, but if anyone has any crits that would be fantastic, as I could work them in last-minute. :)

There're some great entries already, and I assume there's still a few to come :) Just a little heads-up for all those still working on something, I'll close this round in about 24-26 hours from now. Make sure you've posted your finals in the finals thread before then!

Sapphire - The background is a bit boring and the reflection in the water is wrong.. dont think we would be seeing that high up of his body.. more like the eye n stuff like that

Joey-b: Thanks for the crits! I'll work on those today. If you've got suggestions on what would make the bg more exciting, I'm all ears. I want to add more foliage, I'm thinking.

Sapphire: I like this idea, maybe the best idea of this whole round for me (no matter it does not fit the sound). Look where your horizont might be and use it for your benefit : those grass hangings on the trees must points down (perfectly perpendicular to the horizont line), the perspective of the mirrors in the watter yield this as well(since the surface of still watter is perfectly horizontal). I don't say everything must be perfectly precise within linear perspective but when it's very inacurrate it pops out. I hope you could fix some of those till deadline. Good job though, keep up >:)

looking good everyone!
Well I decided this morning to do this challenge. So it was a real push. I just kept listening to the sound file (btw thanks Davi!) and it was so cool that I thought that I'd better give it a try. Here's my creature and the enlarged thumbnail that I chose. Threw the finished piece in the show thread as soon as it was done ; ). Hope you all likey! I likey yours!
