View Full Version : Chow 145 :: Supervillain Self-Portrait

I know Im about to sound like a real newb, but the "finals thread".. i've looked on the forums and can't see it(unless it means this thread), am I blind or being dumb? Welcome in, Greg, good start with your SV-SP.
Neither dumb nor blind -- the moderator sets up the "Final Burning" thread for each CHOW at some point before the deadline. That's where the final images are posted for later polling and voting.
If you look at the CHOW section index, you'll see a Final Burning thread for Chow 143, the Cheshire Cat/Caterpillar go-round. Something similar will be set up for this Chow, so keep watching. These threads later are converted into the voting threads.
Luck to ya!
PS -- about your pic -- I sure as hell hope you're a southpaw! ;)

Some crits and comments! There are so many entries, wow.
MJ Alcazar: Expression and pose are great! I realize you're just laying in the base colors now, but they're very dark so far. Maybe you could add touches of a contrasting color to make it pop and bring the focus towards her face.
Vandalfish: I'm intrigued by your villain so far, and I'm a sucker for anything remotely art nouveau ;) I'm looking forward to seeing your updates.
gtgauvin: Hah, evil masterminds are the true super villains, though they always seem to hamstring themselves with their choice in minions. The off kilter viewing angle is awesome. As is that pimpin' purple suit :P
Clochette: You look so sinister! Already one of my fave images in this thread.
Zilrion: I like the lighting and the hint of destruction behind him, but the anatomy on the bent arm is off at the joint. The elbow itself is thick and too rounded.
Nether: Haha, I love the superior look on his face. His lower legs seem a little short but I can see that you gridded it out, so maybe it's just me.
Cup of Tea?: You already addressed the lighting and the evil aspect, which are the only two things I would have mentioned ;)
LA-Fairy: Thanks! I have some suggestions on your image :D What I notice with the figure itself is mostly the proportion. What really jumps out are her hands. Right now the hand on her belt is much smaller than the extended hand, and her fingers on both of them are very thin. Shading and values - right now it's all very close to mid tones, you don't have a lot of darks and lights and it's flattening out the forms. Especially on the chest and on the right side of the face. Try to think of your forms in a 3 dimensional space. It helps to keep your light source in mind - where it's coming from, what color it is, and how intense it is. All of that is going to dictate how and where the shadows are placed.
Carnifex: The texture in the background is distracting from the character, and there's a lot of empty space underneath the figure - are you going to fill it with something? I'm glad you stuck with the pale skin tone, it works better.
Baxter-E: At first glance I gravitated toward the cooler lighting scheme, but the more I looked at it I think the warm one is stronger. I love the bold, graphic lineart, take it from a Mignola fan-girl.
Thanks to everyone who's commented on my work! I'm sorry I can't get to everyone myself, there are just too many entries. This is going to make for an awesome finals thread :D

For the first time since I´m here (which is not very long) I finally grew some balls and decided to be a part of CHOW.
First of all I thought this was great because when I read the character was a selfportrait as a super villain I thought I was developing some sort of premonitory art powers...
But when I read with more thoroughness the rules and found out that had to be new works (which is quite logical) my powers went to the sewer...
So if i do something decent in this couple of days we have left i´ll post it...In the meantime here´s me...

Ok ... ok ... I have to be the one to ask, but, aren't these suppose to be "self-portraits"?? Hahahaha. Villians have flaws - if not in their personalities then in their appearance. Most of the images here all look too good to be true hahaha. I'd like to see some paintings that "don't" follow the Marvel comics world of perfect looking people hahaha. :)

I really really like sentinel 13's villain, the rendering is envy-inducing...
as for the bodies having flaws, I tried to make mine accurate (heehee) even stole a lot of the clothes from my wardrobe... which leads me to question whether I actually am a super villain in real life and whether /i should have involved fluffy bunny slippers, or maybe pink cardigan.

Thanks for the comments. Tried to work them and came up with this wip. I tried to make the villain a bit more realistic, and less cartoony. And my superpowers, well I figured that I could be Laser-eye-guy! Not so smart working behind my station, thinking on how to rule the entire universe.... heheheh.... i will try and finish it this weekend. Good luck too y'all, there some very interesting villains being created here ... enjoy!

Did some work on mine... still very much a WIP. The Background needs lots of work, the idea is that there's going to be a trial of destruction on the left side and untouched buildings on the right.
Also coming: Figuring out the warm natural lighting from the right. Also feet will be added to end the current cop-out! :D
Crits appreciated!

Guys, I can't keep up with you....
Here's a few crits in the meantime.
I'll put up the final thread in a few minutes.
LA-Fairy: Feeeeet. It looks weird cut off there, and pretty obvious that you are avoiding drawing feet. :P Careful with your values – right now she's reading very flat, similar to a cardboard cut out sort of thing. Adding the feet and a cast shadow will help this, but you also need to get the shadows to give more of an idea of shape – instead of shading in straight lines down the form, try shading in ellipses *around* the form.
DecayingLolita: Careful with your anatomy! Her arm (the one on our left) is much too short, especially when compared to the length of her legs (and in particular her thighs). I would lower her elbow a bit and bring up her knees. And consider your reasoning for not including feet in your image – are you cutting it off at calf-height for a purpose, or are you avoiding drawing the feet? Otherwise coming along well, I like the skin tones!
GiantRibot: A little bit small! Remember that this is a portrait, so we need to be able to see your face, not just your robot. :]
dirkvandulmen: Haha, pretty awesome. I especially like the two laser-burn holes in the computer and then the floor. :P His sillhouhette is still reading a little weird though, I think because the shoulder on his right (our left) should be a little lower to match up properly.

Thanks for the crit. Wasn't trying to avoid feet.. LOL.. Hereof lately my drawings on paper got so big, the feet are always missing O_O I should get larger paper. Just thinking about it, I could have added the feet in photoshop... ahhh why didn't I think of this earlier.. I have no time to edit it anymore now..blehhhh..

Here is W.I.P, as a Villain, in the vein of "heroes" i dont have much of a super villain costume/uniform, powers are very generic glowy hand blast things so far but that may change.

Looking Awesome. I really like your colour changes! I knew you could do it.
I'd appreciate any input you can give me on this. Please! :D
Your right foot is turned a little too much to the viewer's right. Your left arm just seems to be hanging there, I'd have her hold the cloak with that hand. The breast seem a little high to me, but that could just be the positioning of your head and the shadows. I love your expression, and the colours you are using. Think about a background too if you have time.
Nobody said villains couldn't be colorful :P
Purple and green, Joker is all about colour. It's your self portrait, do what you want!
My W.I.P.
In your dreams! hee hee. Good start though. Wont say much because you haven't gotten far enough.
@DecayingLolita I love where you are going with this one. I wonder how a background would look?
I suppose the mask may have to go, what do you guys think?
Lose the mask, they are passe. Besides how can it be a self portrait if we can't see what you look like? The perspective on the legs are off. It looks like the legs aren't attached to the body right. It almost looks like you squished the legs into your drawing. Colours are looking good too.
@Kaizer Havoc and mayhem.
Man I really need to stop commenting and get myself working on drawing myself.

I guess this is it for the night.
Every super-villain needs a gimmick... mine is Red Riding Hood. Not so much super powers as super-evil and super-murderous. She will eventually be holding an axe (a la woodsman).
I was thinking plaid shirt but its proving pretty difficult... any suggestions or criticisms would be nice.
(I know the linework is not so hot, that's just a guideline and won't be in the final).
Thanks.. :]

Too bad you don't have more time...cause I was thinking the lines could be thicker to make it look more like one of those old paintings from Japan. Kudos on getting it done, though.

Oooh, yeah, that would've been good- replicating the thick expressive strokes of those zen paintings and what not.
I wish I knew I was gonna turn it into a Japanese-esque painting when I began. Might've been able to cater the design to the overall concept a bit better ;D
If I actually get my caboose moving and complete these finals, I'll definitely give that a try along with all the other things that are very, very wrong with this.

The final tests at Uni is over... Wheeeeee!!! Now I can plunge right into my villainity.
Super powers are only interesting, if they have some kind of restriction to them. Just being ultra strong or having psychic powers is lame. Take the X-Men for example. The one with the lasereyes has to wear his glasses all the time and the girl that can kill people by touching them can't touch her loved ones...
So I decided, that my power would be that I could appear and disappear wherever I want, IF there are shadows... I can only vanish into shadows, so if you wanna catch me, you better get some huge lights!
Heres my Wip so far, colors blocked in... I think the neck is a little too wide

Didn't know, that drawing digitally is so much fun, I only did this like 2, 3 times before. But now, that I have some free time, I think I'm gonna spend it with my little bamboo... *hugswacom*

What great job has everybody done on this session!
Hope I'm not to late and I'll find a way to finish it...
Here's my concept:
Due to a mistreatment of a rare bacteria infection as asthma that implicated steroid abuse, NObreathing, with her lungs completely destroyed, found a way to survive. She needs huge O2 quantities that only by processing Earth's atmosphere can be supplied, and that makes her not a nice person. She is bounded to a tornado machine, with the only superpower that steroids can can give: super aggressivity!

Baxter-E, I'm a bit late in posting this, but my 2 cents: I prefer the color version on the right. The yellow/green tinted one.
Gerbil Fetus - Personally I like the idea of a "heroes" everyday clothes villain. Important to oomph up the special powers and perhaps special glow, so there's no doubt whatso-ever. My gut feeling. Only 2 cents worth of opinionated stuff, tho.
Murkus, - little red riding hood suits you as a gimmick.
Artofinca - The version where your back is turned to us, kind of shuts us out. I prefer the silhuette that holds on to his hat. You remind me of the creative fashion designers, with the draping and amazing fabrics.
Enjoying all the entries - WIPS - I've seen so far.

Anyways, this is my supervillainous self portrait (and first posted attempt at some semi-decent digital art... well, quatra-decent... or something), and his alias is "Monkeywrench Murphy". His power is that he is the living embodiment of Murphy's Law (If it can go wrong, it will), but he cannot fully control his power, and even he is not immune!

Pixel graphics are fine by me, but not sure if it'll work in the poll. To make it easier for me, please do two extra things?
1.) if you want your final (and the one that shows in the poll) animated, please make sure the width is 300 pixels wide, which is how big I make them for the poll.
2.) Just in case photobucket won't support it animated, also save a .jpeg version for me just in case. (This one can be bigger than 300 pixels wide, as I will just shrink it down like everyone else's.)
thanks. :D

It's too dark in some areas and I've got some weirdness every here and there I have to work out, but otherwise I'm pleased with my progress :) Seeing the work in here and in the finals thread makes me think this is going to be one hard poll to choose entries for, let alone vote on.

Okay, throwin' in my placeholder. WIPs to come.
Pyschotic Splitter once was a powerful hero, able to split his person into multiple copies. It wasnt long before the multiple copies became multiple personalities and began to take control of his psyche. After placing himself in a psychiatric hospital, he quickly changed his minds and broke out, killing all of the hospital staff. He is a nearly unstoppable force, unable to die if there is just one copy of himself in existence.

I got a chicken pox scar between my eyebrows, on the same place where Indian people wear their Bindi. That was the basic idea behind the drawing. I wanted to draw myself as a crazy goddess, banished to live on earth and pretty bored, who knows some mean magic spells.
@ Senira: I definitely like the idea of your drawing. That's a really evil person *shivers* ;)
@ Flipnastywebby: Turquoise is such an evil color *laughs* I'm not so sure if your self portrait really looks like a villain. He looks more like a really sad victim of a bad spell, but the face is expressive. I'm curious what you're going to do with all the tiny details.
@ Artofinca: Nice style.
@ Xaya: That's definitely a villain. Looks good :D
@ Sentinel13: I adore your piece although you doesn't look -really- like one of the bad ones. The coat is awesome and I love the whole color scheme. Turquoise for the win :D

Here's what I got so far... its so much fun, but I think I'm pretty much done with it, unless there's something off, that I can change in time. I'll have another look at it tomorrow.
Maybe I went overboard with the textures... I haven't done this before, so I don't have a sense for what looks good and what doesn't.
Aaaaaah, I wish I was able do to those sexy JessiBean skintones <3
JessiBean, Goog, Stoat, JohnGrello, matjosh, trevor and everyone else... maaan, its such an honor to be in a contest with so many talented people. :yayca:

Another update.
I like that you changed the outfit color (forgot to mention that earlier!)
I'm thinking the face is too dark now though.... You need more highlights from your "brain" power! :D
With all the glowing on the hands and above the head there should be stronger hot spots on parts that stick out (chest, shoulder, etc.). Like taking a photo with the flash on or flashlight.... know what I mean?

As for your painting, i would do some additional work on the face, right now i don´t really see the dark and evil character.
So here´s an update,
not quite sure if i do him / me as a dark magician or something else.

I'd really like it to be animated, it is big part of the thing, and it was quite a lot of work to do. :)

K, I'm working on it now, though photobucket isn't liking it very much. It looks like it's coming up animated, but it's cutting off the last few seconds of animation and making photobucket hang for a while when I try to re-upload it. Any way of cutting down the filesize? I love to scroll through this thread and look at all the crazy, funny, great ideas behind your drawings :)
@Ramariel: The two pictures you postet are so cute. I this your dog? I'm envious :D You chose a really hard pose. Good luck with finishing your drawing.
@The Jester: For all the "firsts" your drawing looks really good. Good color choice but maybe you can try a little bit more color variations and more contrasts.
@Dani Duck: The scan is really too bright. It's difficult to see the arms in front of the light background. The face looks more sad than evil. Maybe you can experience a little bit more with the facial expression.
@Hungryan: Awesome idea and awesome realization. I really hope, it'll work in the poll.

I will try to give some comments to everyone in the finals thread, sorry if I miss someone, there seem to be a million-gzillion works now. If I criticize, I only do it to help people out, and I don't say that I'm any better, so no offense. And sorry fo my spelling, this was a lot to type in.
Gax: I like your special style, it's something fresh to look at.You have great stuff, this seem a little bit more rushed, but still very cool.
Stoat: I can feel the heat coming from there. The weapon seems a bit neglected compared to the rest of the picture.
Matjosh: Nice idea that it's similar to the goblin design of yours. And I like turtles!
Capnpyro: I somehow liked your linework better than the finished piece. The lef breast seems a bit out of place.
Tetrodotoxin: It looks very much like a photo, which must have been hard to do.
The left hand's knuckles is kinda misinterpreted.
LT Action: you imitated the Japanese woodcut style very well. The upper hand seems strange to me, and I don't really get what this villain can do, but I don't know much about japanese myths, maybe it's because of that.
FerrousJack: The version where he lifts the chain seems more interesting to me, but I like the design and the head certainly has some character.
Deadred: My brother told me that this is very nice and funny concept, and he was right. You must have great sense of humor. I like it.
Vaughany boy: A bit rushed, the hands are small, and the arms look like rubberband.
JShamburger: It has very nice colours, the face is very much like yours. Good job really. 1 critique: the legs look a bit squashed, something weird is going on there with the perspective.
Graphuji: The hand pointing down seem a little small and the head a bit big probably. it's nicely rendered on most parts.
t i m: Really funny look, in my opinion the green/orange version was a bit more interesting.
Trevor: Really professional work, all I can say is wow.
shannanigan: I like you on the picture much more than the zombies, they seems to be in a different style. The whole picture has a great atmosphere, and you've really found the character.
anamirela: Szep munka. Almost like a comic cover, and a good idea there. 375 Ft hehe. My critiques are that the pipe seem to be a little bit too smooth at some parts, the arm going down too long, the vadli (don't know how it's called) too thick. In general: you have some problems with the perspective/anatomy, but it stil seem to work somehow.
Artofinca: There's a little drawing in the top left corner of the picture of a figure leaning to a wall in the sketches. That one is really great! The final version could have used a little exaggeration on the face also, ot less on the body perhaps? I don't know.
Darkwolf: I think it could have used some more work, for example the arm he leans on seem to break at a strange position, but there's a lot more anatomy problems, and the coloring of the whole piece is very rushed. Slow down, and use more reference images, study anatomy more.
Gerbil Fetus: I like the face, it's nicely sinister. There are some anatomy and perspective problems though for example the feet look like loafs of bread, the further arm seems to come out from the body in a right angle, etc. It's a believable superhero character.
dirkvandulmen: Very funny, I like it.
Baxter-E: You've catched the hellboy style exceptionally well, my only complaint is that you seem to have a very strong character in your face, which I don't see on the picture.
TengkuAdam: I like the concept, it's not even a big problem that it's rushed.
Justconner: Scary!
Masque: I think I already told you, but you've got an interesting, original style of rendering!
Tugelbend: WOW! you are extremely talented, I've checked your sketchbook also! Five stars! How do you make those rainbowy lines?
NateShaw: you don't seem very healthy :) the shadow across the chest seem to punch a hole in the character. Interesting idea.
Clockwork Bunny: The tummy seem to be missing any kind of anatomical detail, looks strange. the head is not really connected to the neck because of the angle the are drawn I think.
Zilrion: The whole pose is very stiff, but especiallythe hands. You used nice smooth rendering.
LA-Fairy: That fullbody photo is superhot, is that you? A lot of things doesn't have roundness the tummy, the arms, because you use straight lines there too much. The head is huge, and I think cutting the picture at a joint wasn't the best idea.
Grandmassa MR Spect: You could have made the character a little bigger on the picture, that case we could see your face better. The sixpack on his chest not really correct, because it covers too big portion.
dustin53545: The lineart had great potential, I think the background takes away from the picture a bit.
Nadiamoon: Really interesting, surreal picture. I like it. What's her special ability?
Greg Taylor: Nice loose stuff, the sketches showed that it will be good (I like the reddish one a lot). You could try to detail the hands a bit more.
Sen Holiday: She's kinda jokerish methinks. Interesting pose.
Sticmann: I like the style and textures a lot, the foot going to the darkness seem to be more like cut off.
Phew, this was tough, I will try to find time on the rest later, but maybe I will only have time at the voting. One more thing: Jessibean: WOW.

Oh, and the pics I used for ref. Not the best pics of me, haha.
hungryan
February 1st, 2009, 02:53 PM
Cup of Tea: You needed help, so: about the composition, I think you didn't leave enough space around the figure, especially at the top right and bottom, so the placement doesn't seem enough thought out. You use too strong and too uniform outlines on the legs, and as far as I can see around the cape/hands also, which makes those parts look a bit flat, doesn't matter how well you shade it. The shading on the right and left leg below the knee looks almost like it's a bigger cylinder. The background dosen't really add to the picture more takes away from it, because it's clearly a little bit modifyed photo with a gradient behind it, it's too different in style. The face is nice, not exactly your face, but pretty close, and has character. You could try to use outlines that go inside the figure also, not just going around it, because only going around can make the forms look flat as well.
Not that bad picture, now I should shut up and go to sleep.
JessiBean
February 1st, 2009, 02:57 PM
Carnifex - if you scale the grain back in opacity, and the pick out some pieces to be closer to the viewer (some white drops/streaks in the foreground) it will appear more like rain with depth than a texture flattening you out.

Excellent painting, Jessi Bean! Only crit I have is that she just doesn't look ultimately villainous. Mean, maybe, heartless (and a heartbreaker for sure!), but not really evil enough. There's something about her face that says she wouldn't really be capable of that act of ultimate badness -- maybe there's too much a reflection of your own persona?
Technically, I think you could pull the upper tonal range up slightly more as well, and still keep the dark & moody character of the image, but that's a small crit.

Wait, I don't understand (for I am stupid and do not pay attention too good): if we have to fill out the copyright form before the forum software will let us upload attachments now, do we ALSO have to put copyright info in the text of the post? Or is that just for people who host their images off-site?

I don't need them for the poll itself (thank god!) since it's hosted through the lovely chow archive photobucket that an anonymous donor gave us, but I do have to re-input it for any other reason, like the winner's thread (or in the poll itself, when i attach the winning image), or if a selection of them are put up in the Finally Finished section, like the Bettie Page round.
basically it's just to make my life easier and to keep there from being duplicates in the system and so that I don't have to hunt down people when they win. :P

@Dani Duck: The scan is really too bright. It's difficult to see the arms in front of the light background. The face looks more sad than evil. Maybe you can experience a little bit more with the facial expression.
It's really hard to get the scan dark enough with so much white still in the watercolour, especially as dark as I'd like it to be. Plus the original is really light too. (I'll work on colour correction more when I get everything done) I am going to work on the expression more, just haven't had much time to get there yet. A tip I've found useful for scanning, Dani, is to put a piece of dark card behind your image; it stops the light passing through the paper and bouncing back from the white in the lid of the scanner. Otherwise your whites intensify.

I don't think that way will quite help for me considering my piece is on a watercolour block and it's covering the whole glass. I think the problem is the light getting through the cracks around the edges, so I'll rig something up to hide the edges.
The most recent artwork I have up now is pretty close to what I have here, except the white isn't quite that bright.

I've noticed how JessiBean is also one of the artists who do very detailed line work, before even starting on the coloring. I need to do that, too. I used to do it, when I painted by hand. Kudo's to her, too.

Ewww...of course it reminds me of those old contraptions that magicians would use where they flattened the cage and killed the birds. Nice drawing!
