Aha!

Hello again everyone.

Well i have been away for a week on schoolies...

(For you non-australians, schoolies is a week where about 50,000 students who have just graduated high school head up to Surfers Paradise (a small town on the sunshine coast) for a week of copious amounts of alcohol, spontanious copulation and general tomfoolery.)

Being the idiot i am i got arrested for streaking. Oh dear.

Well im back now, and dying to get back into the spirit of things.

Im not gonna bother reading the DSgs i missed cos its just too damn frustrating on a 56k connection.

Will post up for this top soon.

Also let me know if u want to challenge me in Thunderdome 7

Cool davi and vijil ... scary!

Cool xaviuzz ... more noble!

Some parts could've used more work. But I get bored easily.

im gonna take a break from working on mine and comment a little...

@jebus- cool design.. the legs look kind of wierd though, and his clothes look a bit stiff. try adding in some nice folds and stuff.. maybe try to use some reference for the hands. i like his hair and the darkness around his eyes

@Klaivu- haha it is cute.. a bat and little mice.. great drawing. my only critique is thta the mouse on the left looks like she is scared of something off to the side.. she isnt really looking at the bat...

@xaviuzz- 2nd one:cool. i like the little kid vampire :] good colors too. maybe it would be nice to have a bit more detail in that ear

1st one: i like the shoulder poofs (sorry i dont know what to call them @.@;;.. and i like the swirls ont hem :]

@signature- haha.. like in lion king ¬ ¬ i like the spide on the moon.. and i like the simplism

@davi: great colors! good to see a tribal vampire :] he looks good and pissed

@vigil: i love the eyes and the wrinkles on the face good colors

Hi folks! :evilbat:

@klaivu: I simply love the expression on the face of that lil' beast. But you're right, could have used more work, espiacally the bg.

@xaviuzz
I like the color on that one. IMHO you should try to have the shoulder come out a bit more though.

@Signature: lol When I am king surely I weill need a queen...

@xaviuzz nr. 2
That's one wi' potential I think. I'd love to see some more detail in there.

@davi: Wow, I am impressed (again). I, too, like the color. But my fav part is the way you did the creature's right leg...How the light hits the rim...

@vijil
You're giving me the creeps, you know that? That one is mighty scary. Cool FX on the eyes...

Here be me Vampyr! Am not 100% ok with that pic. Anyone want to point what's not right and I am missing??

Still, even if I don't like it myself, maybe some of you guys would :evilbat:

vijil: nice, reminds me of Jae Lee's style.

davi: great colors.

xaviuzz: hey, we've got similar ideas on your first one.

Signature: The teeth are too white imho.

klaivu: Lovely!

Jebus: I too think that the legs look weird, the bottom half of them is too short I think.

Xpressions: nice lightning, very dramatic.

Hi again.

@roger: I like the expression on the face. Will you be doing a color version? I'd love too see that pic in some moody, dark color scheme.

Reworked some portions of that image. Better now? Or worse?

I wanted something gross and beatific at the same time...I see a vampire noble as something transcendent in a degrading sort of way.

I'll comment when people have had a chance to post...

I'll take a moment to welcome Ahkahna -- your piece has an interesting edwardian/art deco feel to it...like the cuff ruffles!

Hey, this is gonna be a tight one. Davi, that's bangin'. Your colors make me high. And I seem to look at dans orc pic while doing just about everything, which is kind of awkward in the bedroom. Oh, and Hunger Artist is nowhere to be found, so form n focus, I'll take your challenge for Thunderdome. Do we have to post it in challenges now? I would assume davi'd see it in here.

Feedback for stuff posted thus far...

***vijil -- nice kabuki mask of range and arrogance. I think that the way the red is used both in the strong areas and washes is very effective, but I would reduce the flashes down by half. I would really love to see more of the figure to get a sense of the entirety of his armor. The face skin folds and expression are magnificent, but I don't get a sense of the body's form (possibly due to cropping)

***davi -- masterful coloring and nice form. The only thing that I would do is kill some of the background intensity so that the figure would pop more.

***xaviuzz -- great portrait feel. I get both the noble and vampire vibes from him. The changes I would make: lower his right shoulder, define his waist area, and change his back collar by making the back curve up more extremely so that it would make sense that it ended behind his head.

***signature -- poignant, bittersweet...a child who would be vampire king. I would pay to see the movie!

***xaviuzz -- sweet and rotten. His eyes carry this picture by conveying an evil, bored, and jaded expression. I love the subtle use of color. The cherub cheeks didn't catch my eye at first, but they definitely add to the feel.

***klaivu -- The mice, the bat, the perspective, the tilt, the gore, the stylized but effective details that evoke 19th century England! It's dead-funny and disgusting -- I want to be you.

***Jebus -- great costuming and loose body-feel. I would make the shield a bit bigger and have the strap across the middle of his lower arm rather than his wrist. Speaking of wrist, the one on his sword arm needs to be straightened to match his arm.

***Xpressions -- good head-feel. You don't seem to get face-itus like I do -- there's room for a brain in his head! I like the slit for a pupil, but it may be too subtle of a detail to denote his vampiric nature: perhaps a use of a slightly different color for his eyes will bring the viewer's eyes where they need to be. Just for fun, try a fine brush with high opacity and sketch in more details such as some hairs or perhaps a collar -- I think just a few fine details will make this piece pop.

*** Ahkahna -- welcome again! I commented before on your piece, but I just noticed that your hands are slightly different shades...that's all I can spot.

*** Valcon Jet -- a post is a post! I hope you have chance to develop it, but if not, it's good to see your name up here.

***mog -- I like the gristly, stylized feel...I would drop that ear, though.

***SirSushi -- you got the noble part down...now all you need is some mangled up mess of a body behind him or under his feet to show his darker side!

***beetlebum -- I would outline that dude, maybe in white, to give him a sense of form separate from the background. The overlapping, painterly style of the shirt/medal/ribbon area shows great promise -- I think in a few weeks, you'll blow yourself away with what you've learned to do.

***anjy -- cute and claustrophibic. I feel threatened because they are in my face. I like your style, there's more subtlety in it than first meets the eye.

This has taken me about 1/2 hour...I'm sure other's have posted, but I haven't gotten to them yet.

Lord Vladimere. A count of the romanian hills. Rumour has it that he has royal blood in his vains. He comes from his hill every so often to wine and dine the best females of each village but they all dissapear without a trace. Most believe that he keeps them in his castle as mistresses, other believe something more deviant.

Klaivi ( I hope I spelled that right :D )-I love the whole Sherlock Holmes feel of yours.....reminds me of that Disney classic "The Great Mouse Detective" ever heard? Well yours is a wee bit more spooky than a Disney film but you know what I mean!

Odd-Great coloring job! It looks like he's gonna attack any second mwa hahahhaha!!!

Can't wait to see what else people come up with.

As for mine...I did it in about 45 minutes, sooo unfortunatly the perspective is off, and I hardly went into any coloring at all, but I too get bored easily soooo here it is....

*Deep breath*

Vijil - Nice. I like the way you rendered the skin.
Davi - Argh! My retinas burn with pleasure! I love the colours particularly!
Xaviuzz ( 1 ) - Interesting colours. He looks very noble.
Signature - Heh. Good that you took the time to explore his inner emotions... ;)
Xaviuzz ( 2 ) - I assume it's intentionally childlike. Creepy.
Klaivu - Your rendering is reminding me of an illustrated plate from an old fairytale book which really suits that pic. I love it!
Jebus - Cool concept. The pointy boots and slightly crossed legs are bothering me, though. The lower half of his body doesn't seem to match the rest of his stance.
Xpressions - Tell your pic to stop staring at me! Nice mood to it, though...
Roger - What a great expression on his face! Looks very relaxed - I'm imagining him watching 'The Munsters' on a TV off to the bottom right of the pic.
Ahkana - I like the simplicity of that. Strangely androgynous, but that suits a vampire rather well.
Valcon Jet - Nice. Be nice to see it finished if you get time.
Wystro - Great stuff! Really original, and I'd say you captured the gross / beutific thing pretty well - wonderfully expressive face for so little detail.
Mog - I like the texture on that. If you stretched the head on purpose, to emphasize the scream/roar, then I like it.
SirSushi - What a dapper gent. I had something very similar in mind.
Beetlebum - I'm with Wystro; the shirt area is nice - be good to see the rest of the image handled in a similar way.
Anjy - You have scared me.
Miau - Another dapper chappie. That has a nice, pencilly feel to say you did it with the tablet. Well done for not throwing an obvious set of fangs in there..!
oDD - Nice to have you back! That's super nice. Great colour and lighting, and a very sinister atmosphere.
Hazzard - Very clean style. Like Miau, I like how you avoided two big fangs, but still made him look like a vampire.
Kartoffel - Nice expression. What are the yellow bits on the fangs?
Shinbun - Nice. I'm liking the uniform.
Faxtar - Excellent!
Plaf - Nice lighting. The grey flecks in his hair are a nice touch.
Ancient Kitten - Very dynamic pencil you have there. Nice.
Yoba - You can tell it's late. Yours is reminding me of Aaron Neville.
SirSushi - Cheap. :)

*Pant*

I did everyone! Phew. I was determined to do it at least once. Sorry they're quite short, but I'm very tired...

I can't believe four of us decided to give our vampires drinking vessels and none of us have them sucking on a virgins neck! Some time away from the wacom needed, I feel...

Comments and shiznit:

vijil: thats totally sweet dude, I love his expression :) The one thing I would change is I would make the blade of his sword (the red part) a little more shiney ... i can't tell if its just a red blade or ... its got blood on it?
davi: amazing as usual. you're coloring work really shines out man, it's got that subtle mood that really draws my eye.
signature: lol, that's kickass :P
xaviuzz #2: much better coloring job on the face, it's very very good :)
klaivu: nice linework and shading, thats cool. the windows in the BG look off though, unless the bed is floating ...
jebus: thats sweet, his legs give a great feeling of weightlesness. His right hand seems to be missing a thumb, and I think his head might be too big =\
XPressions: Second one is better imo. Good job on the hair, thats really nice :P his chin seems off though, it looks flat ... maybe you should fade the bottom part of it more so it seems more 3d.
wystro: thats tight :) awesome as usual. when I see it though my brain is begging for some body defenition and facial features .. . reminds me of a children of bodom song, needled 24/7 :P
mog: killer shading dude, and a nice texture on the skin, his wrinkles look real! the head is ... footballish though and it seems like the ears are a.) too small and b.) too high on his head.
Brettan: Really sorry I missed you on the last DSG comments, I just scroll down to the pictures, and since yours is in link format I missed it =/
This pic is nice, I love the hair and his eyes and lips look great. I gotta say his cheeks and chin look way too puffy and big, they don't really fit his face. The moustache doesn't look attatched to the face because it doesn't drop any shadows or really interact with the face, it just kinda looks like its floating there. The shading on the cloth looks great too. But the one thing that seems really off about this pic is the hat. It's perspective is way off. The hat seems too small, and it just looks flat. I'd make it bigger, and make it wrap around his head a bit, and dip down in the back. the brim of the hat should be more than just a flat line, it should have a top and a bottom and be ... 3d. God i'm tired, I hope that helped man. It's very well done pic, the colors are great, just needs some tweakage :)
miau: nice job on the clothing, and the shading is great. when I see his face something seems off though, and it seems that his hairs part is going to the right, and his face is going to the left ... also, the shading on the left side of his face (hsi right) seems too dark too quick, making his cheekbone look huge...
Shinbun Kakashi: very nice pose, very old fashioned and noble. His head seems to be misshaped, a little slanted. Also, the linework and pencil shading were very good, and I think the colors should be taken out, i feel it would be more credible without them.
SirSushi #2: ROFL <3 that, somebody had to do it :P
Matt Dixon: Wow. Baffled. That's amazing man, you are an incredibly talented painter and artist. I feel like an ass for saying this, because I couldn't reproduce even 1 pixel on that painting myself, but the frill on his wrist seems ... off. It looks like it was hastily done and not thought out like the rest of the pic. Everything looks deliberate but that. It doesn't seem to reflect the shading of the environment, and the overall shape just looks ... rushed.
myrko: very well colored, nice job on the clothing ... but that expression on his face is just ... off, it seems. he kinda looks braindead, just staring off into space. The hands seem to augment that, as they are sorta clenched and opened for no reason. Dunno, it's a nice start, but some things could use work.
bkmini: i love the coloring and shading on that, the backlight is very effective too. his cloak seems a bit too stiff though, i'd make it more drapey.
MrKayne: that's sweet, I love the cloth for his arms, it looks very good :) One thing I would change is the coloring of the belt, it's the same as the cloak and that effects the feeling of depth at the back part of his body, it makes the cloak look almost in front of him.
I had commented on everybodys but I removed most of them due to mods post. sorry.

DAMN, that was some serious replying dude, hat's off...

anyway, i'd have to say retrosolid had my fav' pic out of this topic (although i would have liked to see something accentuating his "beauty", possibly a bunch of naked women grabbing on him).

Had so much fun, and extra time, so I decided to do another. I'm just working on painting skills. I used Giovanni Battista Moroni's Portrait of the Duke of Albequerque for a ref. I figure the classics are the best way to learn technique. Dixon, I gotta say I love that-I wish I had some glasses like that. Oh, and form n function, I'm looking forward to a good competition. I hope you give me a run for my money.

mtom i agree -- but lets get clear that we want to keep constructive criticism. i know how much it sucks when you post like 50 things and noone says anything. sometimes just the occasional "good thought, keep it up" actually helps.

but i agree that commenting takes up too much space, so maybe if we just make it more concise and meaningful, and off encouragement in groups ie

adam, joe, bob, dan, mike:keep up the good work
tony, sam, leon: good compositions, maybe some perspective work needed

just some thoughts, cos we dont wanna completely lose the discussions of the dsg.

and Valcon Jet, i agree with your comment on his proportions, but trust me when you have a blood alcohol level of .19 the last thing your thinking about is proportioN!

One of my less-inspired evenings...
I suppose he's of noble blood. Maybe not noble, but of nobility...
I think he uses the blade because he's of such small stature that it just makes things easier, and he's got no vanity about whether he uses his teeth or not.

davi - Sweet one!
klaivu - Outstanding! For some reason I initially thought that this scene was all taking place on a train, and that this vampire was rather fat and seated in a dining car. I still like it the way you intended, but don'tchya just love trains?
oDD - Beautiful!
danielh68 - Sorta weird... That set-up is almost exactly what first popped into my head for this project.
retrosolid - Nice job.

You'll have to do better than that Hand! I can smell your fear!! No, I'm just kidding, I know you just did this in a couple minutes, and its a great start. My favorite part is the hand, I am starting to see how you build up those cool bulbous textures and mass to your drawings. Its good to see one of your pics in the early stages. Do you use ref? Or pure mental energy? It looks like he got caught in the middle of doing something he shouldn't've. -the sworn enemy Rockhead

I figure vampires with money and the obligatory ego would be big on portraiture, considering the whole, unfortunate mirror thing...

It's okay to post comments, Carnifex :D
It's just been getting way outta hand, and we hope to curtail some of the excess. It's not at all meant to be a moratorium on constructive criticisms or pats on the back... The request is just intended to temper the oppressive volume of it somewhat.

He likes to watch the sunrise, but he doesn´t like being a vampire much.

Ahkana:
I think you caught the vampireness, whithout showing blood or fangs.
He just could be a skinny sickly boy, or he could be a undead monster,
whos inner organs atrophied over the centuries.

Now, aside from the legs, the pelvis is too femenin, It looks like a vital part of his anatomy is missing.

Wystro: Wow, you really succeded in what you set out to do, in my opinon.
Bretton: I think you set the brim of the hat a bit low, and lost the the shape and size of the head.

The moustache looks like two black clumps, try showing some texture and direction,
there are some good brushes in painter to do that.
I don't know OC, hopefully there is something like that, otherwise use a thin brush.
I am not crazy about that flat color background, I suggest varying the intensity.
All in all the character gets across. I like the costume and the character.

Faxtar: Like the pose and expression.
SirSushi: :) great expression.

Odd: Yours screams: "decadent monster". The blood around the mouth could be a bit darker.

Retrosolid: I like that costume.
voide: Ha, funny I never thought of that.

These yellow bits are supposed to be golden ornaments.
