ROUND #144 :: THE SIAMESE TWINS
DESCRIPTION
It's year 55 P.A. - Post apocalypse. The nuclear war, and the devastation it caused afterward, led to a huge increase in the number of abnormal births - at least in those populations that survived. In the pockets of the planet that are still relatively untouched, civilization is trying to find a fledgling grip on itself again.
Outside those, however, is chaos.
The Siamese twins are rarely known as anything else. Cold and rational, these two not-so-individuals have learned to survive in a world set almost entirely against them.
Working as "protectionists" for those who wish to cross the wild, they are part mercenary, part guide, part shaman, part extortionist.
Notes on this round:
-the twins can be either male or female, but they should both be the same gender
-post apocalyptic, but the amount of technology they have available is entirely up to you
------------
ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?
--------------------
SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);

:right: PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
:right: SAVE YOUR FILE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:

THE REST IS EASY:
1: No comments before poll is set. They WILL be deleted with utmost malice and petty grumbling. >:{
2: Sit back and enjoy the show. BYOPC (Bring your own popcorn)
3: Good luck to all.

I had to crop out the two supporting characters because they were distracting from the character design at hand. This was allot of fun. Even though a couple enteries have me clearly out classed. There is allot of creativity and talent here. Congratulations to every one who entered. Everyone has shown great stretches of their imagination.

Drawn it on paper with pencil. Make out lines in photo-shop, Then I put the brush on color mode on and off with other blending modes; screen and overlay mostly. I use most of brush on opacity with the selection tool to draw shapes and then adding color in the selection. Background is done separately and then color balanced with character colors and some lighting on character from background.
Thanks for your time to read it...

Rushed. This thing changed quite a bit from where it started, hehe.
Many a heedless traveler misunderstood Mia and Tia. They often had no trouble recognizing Mia as the gun and Tia as the support. What they did not realize was that while Mia also served as the sight, Tia served as the brain.

I totally had forgotten that I was on Pacific Standard time. So I kept tweaking the painting until I realized at 10:00 P.M. standard time that the contest ended 11:59 Eastern Standard Time. I guess I don't count; but since I had gotten this far since day one; I'd like to share what I came up with. Thanks for all the inspiration you guys. Love all of the wonderful pieces out there. Some of my fav's..
Peppi - phenominal rendering, the disfigurment gives me that queesy feeling...job really, really, well done!
Nightblue - Your piece had a certain Mandrake-esque quality to it..nice one :)
Gax - love the style, love the colors, your piece made me smile.
John Grello - Loved the pose, came out really well.
Chaite Noir - Another high quality entry, great execution great presentation.
and my absolute fav:
Twitchfinger - Truly unique take on the "siamese" aspect of the character. Really nailed it in terms of design. Excellent sense of movement in the pic. Loved the pallete and lighting. You didn't post any WIP's...a pleasant suprise to say the least.

January 27th, 2009, 03:12 AM
Thanks people =)
Voted for JOHNGRELLO and OYO.
JOHNGRELLO - your lighting, colors and rendering are wonderful. The characters feel very much alive, and I also like the gentle addition of the background; it puts you in the right set of mind and doesn't take focus away from the characters. They both answer the brief well in my opinion, and can be described as "mercenary, guide, shaman, extortionist." Very nice.
OYO - the designs are crazy and unique, and the pose and design of the twins tells a very interesting story about their relationship. I love all the little details and the gentle touches in the background that add to that sense of story. On top of all that, of course, lovely rendering and lighting work.
Others I liked:
dariocoelho - cool design. The relationship between the two is very interesting, and I like the "recycled" weapons. Linework is really nice.
artina - nice grungy work, they look badass. I like how you played with the oranges and blues.
peppi - such fantastic rendering, it's almost painful to look. The design is awesome, and the only reason I didn't vote for you is that to me, these guys don't really feel like "cold and calculating" or "mercenary, guide, shaman, extortionist". Definitely an amazing piece nevertheless.
deadred - the composition is really cool and I like the archer/adventurer look you gave them. I feel that there's something missing in the final piece that was much stronger in the B&W stages, something in the tonal work and composition.
t i m - the robots didn't really work for me, but I think as an environmental piece, this is excellent.
Twitchfinger - very cool characters and awesome lighting. The vertical-flip idea is excellent =)

Chate Noire : Love their face and attitude.
Twitchfinger : Excellent one! The design is mad, and the composition very dynamic.
Gax : As usual, funny and efficient, great staïle coupaing. ;)
Vorace : I love the character, even if the background is not at the same level of quality (you have to think of your background when you make the char, not after they are finished! :P) but well, what is the most important is the character design I guess, and yours is sick. *asspat*
Cookiedough : Very simple and original approach, I liked it.
I'm really sorry, seems that I voted for one more (Delmar), it was not really my intention, I don't know if it was me or a forum bug. :/ Though it's done, so I voted Delmar as well... :)

deadred, VORACE, Twitchfinger, GAX, Artina, OYO, Peppi, GOHNGRELLO, dariocoelho
POLL ENTRIES:
Artofinca; i liked the design but to be honest i get this conversation at first when i see it. :)
twin one:hey sis look over there!
twin two; i don't wanna be in post apo days wanna eat baskin robins!
Hungryan; bang, bang i liked the design, it seems he is saying "please hold the incoming bullets, hey hey i am hit" - clothes seems bit new(clean) for post apo. theme! just a thought.
Navarrot; :)
deadred; Your colors are brilliant! but i don't get how they are sticking to that pillar.
goat27; is that lipstick ammunition? funny!
Mrpank; axe and gun, fire and blood :) i liked that venomous smiles
Lt.action; hat guy looks dummy!
Chate noire; another great piece :) i liked the inventory under their possession.
Dan!; i liked your colors!
DELMAR; CURIOUS AND mad he is gonna beat them to death :)

FerrousJack; cool!
GAX; Your style really impressive!
Artina; They are bad ass :) wow loved your work!

Ethax; you are lucky to be in :) I think this twin is so violent that he cut his twin off!
Carnifex; I liked the passion and royal mood in it!

Peppi; You did it, that is awesome. muah muah :)
RAOUL DUKEL; Your piece needs more contract its really hard to get what going on. Wheres the shadow of the character as the sun is up high.
ZIMFIN; This piece turned out really nice :) you weaponry are quite clean though!
GOHNGRELLO; I liked that determined expression by carrying that weight all the time great job!
COOKIEDOUH; Weird :)
OYO, Craaazy stuff, too good!
NON POLL POSTS
Nickykcin; scary stuff :)
DefiledVisions: their face is suggesting them as females but the torso is of masculine features.

Blueman: you were definitely in if you have finished it.
Poison: :) one twin is sweet!
NateShaw; its not convincing!
Grandmassa Mr. Spect; so is it all about this chic! lol man she is getting all the attention, why even you put her there?
n1va: they gonna kill them, i like the aggression----are they suffering from elephant feet disease? those metal armor looks like soft shaded pearls :)
Monika Gruszka: post apocalyptic! please!
t i m: that's a cool work!
rmygona; they doesn't seems to be twins! good sketch! i like it!
Verehin; i liked the ugly looking twin!

AriA; hey are those unicorn's horn on their legs?
buffichar: weird pose, ouch!
MJ_Alcazar; you should have posted earlier :)

ZIMFIN; This piece turned out really nice :) you weaponry are quite clean though!
Thanks!
Although I worked my ass off on this one with little result in the votes, I realize 1) I had VERY stiff competition, (always do!;-) ) and 2) there are definitely places I could work more on. For example, as you said, the weapons are to clean and I could have done more to make their body more battle scarred. I also, in hindsight, think I could have used a more dynamic pose and possibly added a little more in the way of BG to add to the sense of environment. At least I learn as I go. That is the point after all!
Well, thanks for my votes and well done to all for participating!
*edit* I couldn't help voting for so many! I chose: chate noir, Twitchfinger, peppi, John Grello and Oyo

I thing, all around, everyone made great work, so many ideas...I like dirty and violent style of Vorace, "sketchy" Delmar´s, OYO´s mercenaries, Artina´s desperado brothers (ciggar idea is nice) and zombielike Peppi´s work...but, I voted for Twitchfinger...his work made me laught in good way, and is, definitely, most original concept of all (others are great but are just "copies" of yet existing ideas and twins)

John Grello like people said before me, awesome rendering, whilst stickin' to the brief.
[B]Giantribot Wouldn't mind if these led me trough the desert... Doubt that they would get me safely across. Nice rendering.
Chatenoire They actually have a map. They look competent and fit the brief. Other peeps had better ideas as to how the twins fit/meshed together though.
Lots of quality this round!

Great work guys ! Thanks for the crits and comments !
Chatte noire : Really like your treatment and your neat rendering. The encens holder is a great idea. The two sisters have great unique personnality.
Doesnt feel enough post apocalyptic too me though.
You succeed in depicting the tortured flesh where I failed ^^
Twitchfinger : nice concept, nice rendering, nice dynamism. I like the guns getting bigger in each hand. All good !
Artina : I like the arms concept.
Dario : great details and props designs but barefoot ?! ahah
Peppi : creepy ! Great rendering.
Great work again, very inspiring !

daestwen what exactly Unfinished / Rough / Quality Check in my work? I ask becouse it is very similar to my last CHOW...where all is normal...
thanks
The top half of your image is great, but you kind of lost a bit with his lower half - he is completely imbalanced and simply wouldn't be able to stand, the way that you've done his legs. I know that anatomy isn't a huge factor this round, but your character still needs to be able to stand properly. :]
Gothique: I would appreciate it if you didn't compare yourself to others who got into the thread in quite that condescending tone. Cookie's image is simple, yes, and when something is heavily stylized it can sometimes be hard to judge. But, the piece is consistent, and a good concept, so it gets a pass. Though colour isn't a requirement in chow, it's true that it does help, especially when it comes to images that otherwise would read very flat, as yours does in this case. I would suggest trying to give more volume and area to your characters - right now all three read on the same flat plane, and come off as more of an egyptian painting rather than a three dimensional one. (A good point here would be that their feet are facing left, but their entire torso is twisted to face the front.)

I voted for Gax because I am a sucker for the colours and the style he used - made an totally awesome peice.
My other favourites were:
peppi - Really cool design and execution, the stumbling pose suits the character well. The way you painted their skin and clothes really makes it very realistic. And a plus for them looking like something from out of Silent Hill. And that's the most brutal post apocalyptic axe I have ever seen. :)
Twitchfinge - I don't even wanna know how they go to the toilet... to put a head in the crotch, wow that's an odd idea - but it came out awesome.
Artina - That's two cool dudes, looking very hard-boiled. And I really liked the detail where one smokes the cigar and the other puffs out the smoke. :P
Vorace - Loved the colours and the mood in this piece. Great face designs, loved the glowing Stroggish eyes. And the skin you painted is just plain sweet!
And thank you sony for pointing out what was wrong with mine, now I know what I need to prioriate when I'm trying to improve. :D

Oh wow, I wasn't included in the voting because I named my twins a necromancer? I thought my image was very post apocalyptic, and who knows what type of religions/freaks would roam around.
Oh well, that'll teach me to name my images.
Honestly, I'm terribly disappointed I wasn't included because I actually rushed big time before the deadline and was working crazy shifts on the weekend.

Sony thanks a lot for commenting on my image, yeah I went with deformed freakish huge and bloody evil. Evil enough to be worshipped. I appreciate that you noticed my drawing! :)

Voted for deadred, Twitchfinger, Gax, dariocoelho, peppi and OYO because
deadred: Nice nightmarish feel to the scene.
Twitchfinger: I'd feel very safe travelling through the wasteland with this friendly chap. Lots of power and fantastically rendered.
Gax: Your colour palette is very nice, as is your overall concept. It reminds me of old animated movies from the seventies. My favourite :D
dariocoelho: Great use of bits'n'bobs for the costume. I find the crisp line art very appealing.
peppi: Gets the 'siamese twins' concept across very well. Superbly rendered.
OYO: I can really imagine coming down from my room in a run-down hotel, ready to join the band of ragged wanderers to cross the Dead Wastes. And there is this guy at the bottom of the stairs urging everybody to "Stay close!" and to "Watch out for the Undead Roamers!". Creepy in a very positive way :)

My entry: I kinda veered off the topic didn't I?
Peppi's piece looked amazing. Sorry, but instead of giving honorable mentions; I voted for more than one. My votes:
-Peppi: awesomely done; kinda Silent Hill-ish:).
-Artofinca: Love the mood and atmosphere of this piece as well as their opposite characterizations. Well done.
-Twitchfinger: Badass (can I say that?).
I didn't vote for her, but: Monika Gruszka: I like your style.
Sony: Thanks for the suggestion. I did threw in a little too much in there. But as a stand alone piece not counting this chow contest; I didn't mind at all. I totally agree with you there though.

Voted for:
deadred: really like the perspective, pallete and overall atmosphere. Nice sense of action, no laser guns, and a cuddly toy like.
peppi: awesome concept, awesome painting skills. He (they, sorry) look a like they might be a little bit "slow". Excellent characterisation.
All very nice work. GJ all :teeth:

thanks for the feedback!
sony: they have spider powers :D that's kinda why i put them on the pillar, but i guess i didnt convey that too well, i'll have to think on that, thanks.
i'm keen on more critiques anyone has on my entry, as i'm still going to work on it further as a full illustration later on.
i try to keep a limit of 3 votes and this round was hard to pick, so i stuck to design efficiency and creativity. There were alot of good entries but most of the twins look like they won't do well in a tough battle situation.
voted for:
Twitchfinger: kickass battle-efficient design, compo, and those expressions :D
dariocoelho: i really like your design, all the cool details, neat proportions too
peppi: amazing entry, i'm speechless. i especially like the way you join them together lol

Ok, going to try to leave crits for everyone.
Gax - I like the style, it's different and the colors are wonderful.
Vorace - love the image. The energy is awesome. Only crit is the background doesn't look like you spent as much time as you usually do with it.
Raol Duke - love the image, the stylization is cool. I think the little is still a little hard to make out though.
n1va - I think a lot of this is too polished looking. Also, they don't really look post apocalyptic. I see that you ran out of time and were wanting to put more of the post-apocalyptic elements in there. I think it would've gone a long way to sell this image.
Monika Guzko - I love the feel of the image. It looks like a poster for a futuristic side show performance. But they don't really look tough enough to be mercenaries.
peppi - wonderful image. A lot of character in them. I like how you went even further and disfigured them while still keeping them looking human.
deadred - wonderfully rendered. I love how the top twin looks more innocent than the one shooting the arrow. However, how are they hanging on to that pillar? EDIT: oops, saw your post.
Hungryan - I like your image. I think the perspective is a little off with that one hand. I don't think it would be quite that large, but I could be wrong.
nightblue - love the personalities coming from your twins.
doombee - beautiful image. Love the wolf. Their personalities don't really come through so much for me.
Sry guys, more tomorrow.
And MOAR!!!
Oyo - love the design and all the little details you put in.
Zimfin - rendering was great and so was the design. I think a lot of the character in their outfit was missing, little tears, worn spots. And the weaponry doesn't quite look like it was rendered to their skins level.
Navvorot - I like the simple design. I think in areas it looks a little flat. And, it's lacking in little things that would make the character. They are mercenaries and part shaman, guides, and I'm not really getting that from your piece.
Maxim Verehin - like the weaponry, and the chair was a nice touch. They're faces look great. They have no center of balance and their feet look a lot like they're floating. I usually draw a center line down the middle of my characters, and call that their center of gravity. It sounds silly, but it really helps me realize if they're falling or leaning too far.
Cookiedough - nice simple design, and the weaponry is awesome. Unique take on them.
Twitchfinger - love the movement, and the design is awesome.
Jhongrello - love the expression and the mood of the piece.
Artina - love the design esp. the little things like the second twin expelling the smoke and the two feet in one. And they definitely look tough enough to be mercenaries, even if they would be very fast. But, who knows how fast anyone would be with all the mutations?
Giantribot - love the characters and how they intereact with each other. The colors are great too.
dariocoehl - love the lineart and how his clothes and weapons are put together from different things. I'm not quite sure about his left leg, it looks a little like it's not supporting his weight to me. But I could just be imagining that. Good work!
Delmar - love the pose and the design, but I wish I could make out the scouting twins head a little better, right now it kind of blends into that spear.
alright, more to come.

this was great!
HUNGRYAN: i loved the idea of the gunfaced guy, and though i had trouble figuring out how that worked, the image just worked for me.
deadred: well, i've been a huge fan of your art for a while, but i really like the angle and composition of this piece. i couldn't figure out at first how they were sticking to the column, however.
lt. action: the tea-drinking little mate for a left arm is a concept that really gave me a chuckle. he brought a bit of class to the whole endeavour.
chate noire: just great work. professional on every level and i really liked that the characters were readily identifiable as warrior/guide.
twitchfinger: wow, really dynamic. and i never considered an up/down siamese twin...but...how do they poop?
vorace: so dynamic and violent. they look like they could kick serious ass.
doombee: your figures' stane and the color palette really made me feel as though they were part of a post-apocalyptic earth.
ferrous jack: very dynamic and cool
animirela: we chose a pretty similar pose. i guess great minds think alike!
dariocoelho: so detailed and beautiful. i'm jealous!
peppi: what can i say. you're amazing. perfectly rendered. creepy as f. and i love the street sign fashioned into a kind of glaive. gorgeous.
this was great. it's kind of addictive.
cheers!
