Oh my, that figure painting rocks. Having that slimy character right next to kind of gives a split impression. Haha! I'm guessing you used photo ref for it. Must've taken some time. Impressive nonetheless, not to mention the other two. Great start. Välkommen, förresten.

Well thank ye. Yup, used a ref for it and it took about 2-3 hours. Och tackar. ^_^

A little humanoid tick I produced in about 4-5 hours.

Started doodleing something for practice of anatomy (esp. hands). After a little while I thought about turning it into something else, something more complex. The thing is that I have no idea what, so I put it on hold for now.

Nothing much right now, but you'll get half an arm atleast. :P

HumbleHenk
January 26th, 2009, 08:56 AM
Here are a few graphite sketches. Some of them are pretty old, like a year or so. The women are kinda new though.

When I sketch like this I don't really go for the likeness. More form. I've sketched far too little in my days, so I'm kinda benighted when it comes to anatomy or sketching in general for that matter. Some things I get but mostly I'm fumbling. Plannin' on doing something about that. So you'll get alot of anatomy, studies of people and quick paintings/concepts/sketches from now on.

HumbleHenk

Woopsie, forgot the actuall drawings. Well HERE they are. *slaps forhead*

Some more of that arm. It multiplied. Meant as an anatomy study of male arms.

Thank ye Kfeeras. Don't worry, I'll never stop. ;)

Here's something I cooked up during a few beers with a friend.

About 4-5 hrs. Practising colours. ( I guess you can see who I used as reference, allthough I changed a few features :P )

There's a bigger version On my DA page. http://twistmyflesh.deviantart.com/art/Priestess-of-hell-111183778

I will start doing full body shots soon I promise.

Here's a piece for colour and anatomy(hand) practise. A slightely irritated, frustrated gambler.

Tell me what you think.

Christoffer
January 31st, 2009, 08:00 PM
What I think? Well...um gee. It kicks ass, simple as that. He totally looks like he put out a major sigh and gave up. Very nice updates over all. Looking forward to your full body paintings/sketches..anything really.

HumbleHenk
January 31st, 2009, 09:45 PM
Tackar tackar. Other than main practise of the aspects I mentioned, that was the feel I was going for. Nice to see someone interested ^_^

Here's a very quick one (15 min perhaps) done with a few beers running through my veins :S. I am totally inexperienced when it comes to colour. Haven't really studied any colour theory or anything so I'm fumbling in the dark. Did this to try what would happen if I went through a colour scale of green, blue, red and yellow.

Next one'll be a full body.

Anyways, time for bed methinks.

Started this an hour ago. Colour and anatomy practise again. Going for a slightly deformed style.
Not the final form. I just started rendering the peck and shoulder to decide which colours to use.

HumbleHenk
February 2nd, 2009, 04:13 PM
Another wip. It turned into something I didn't expect. But that is something one have to count with when started out with no plan at all other than "I'm have to practise some anatomy".

Again, it's not finished. Gonna take a break to rest my arm and watch a movie. Probably "outlander". See If it's worth the time.

Good job with anatomy, I like the multiple hand concept. I can't wait to see your WIP finished.

Keep postin, you will be popular soon I reckon' :)

Thank you Zeus12. I hope you're right.

Here's the dude completed. Named it "Hotheaded", thought it seemed appropiate.

Need to practise clothes and textiles...badly.

Hah, thought I'd do a mini challenge over at cgsociety. A 35 min sketch of what one consider "Pure evil". I didn't notice until after I was done that this particular segment of the challenge forum was active 2007. *slaps forhead*

Anyways, here it is..

Fun to see you here too! I always enjoy to see people's sketchbooks and not only their finished art. Also, those pencill sketches are looking good!
Hurra hurra!

HumbleHenk
February 10th, 2009, 02:29 PM
Hi there Vloth. Nice to see you've started a sketchbook here too. Thanks btw. ^_^

Some environments done today for practise. I'm trying to capture a feel for an upcoming piece. I tend to never do any backgrounds so I'm pretty new at it.
I love eerie swamps and cozy ancient forests so I practise those, for I intend to work my art into a certain direction, where I hope it will be considered cozy, magical and often tranquil (when I don't do macabre stuff that is). And It's pretty hard to portray a certain atmposhere when there's no environments in the piece. So I practise :) .

Spent about 30 min on each, give or take 10 min. Photoshop.

Man your stuff looks great.

February 10th, 2009, 03:22 PM
your understanding of lights & shadows is great!

keep it up mate

Janos
February 10th, 2009, 04:01 PM
The enviros are really nice. Try adding details to make them interesting and not just moody. #23 doesn't work for me. The lighting is very nice and original and teh concept as well, but the forshortening looks wrong. The hand seems small.
Try taking a pic of you in that position.

HumbleHenk
February 10th, 2009, 07:28 PM
nurraymjo - Thanks !

Obstbrand - Thank ye. And don't worry I'll never stop.

Janos - Ah, these enviros where only to get a feel for it. But I'll keep that in mind till next time I sketch environments. And ah, you're entirely correct there. I was busy getting the anatomy correct-looking so I missed that. Will practise some forshortening. Thank ye for the C&C, most appreciated.

Now here's another environment wip. Will work my ass of on this one methinks. There'll be a character thrown in later (Was thinking about an alien shaman or somethin like that, perhaps a hunter.). 1 h in so far perhaps.

HumbleHenk
February 11th, 2009, 05:56 PM
A WIP. Started rendering the environment. I'm still decideing what sort of character I'll add later. The lower dark area might become a stream or some kind of body of water. I feel kinda sure about rendering the background before deciding the rest since this one will probably work as just an environment piece by itself.

perhaps 3-4 hours in so far.

HumbleHenk
February 13th, 2009, 12:38 PM
A few 1-3 min poses (and one super duper special thumbnail environment :P ). I suck at this. So I practise ^_^ Want get more precision in my lines so I do these fast ones. So far it's pretty cylindrical and blocky shapes ( I'm VERY heavy handed). Gonna do a few pages every day from now on. Hopefully in a few months they'll be a bit more fluent.

References from fashion magazines and The last of the Mohicans.

HumbleHenk
February 13th, 2009, 05:34 PM
Thought I'd post another WIP of the environment I'm doing. It's about 40% done. I'll add more vegetation one the ground level, perhaps some more atmospheric effects, and then a character. The forground is temporary I think, probably do something about it at a later stage but then again, perhaps I won't.

And another sneakpeek of the ugly fellow I'm doing in between.

Jösses! O_O
Those SPs are great, especially the right one (I think you have a new avatar haha). I'm digging the horror theme, and that portrait of your friend is also very nicely done. Good job on the expressions. I also like the choice of colors, not to mention in everything else here. I want to do digital SPs too but my last efforts have been horrible to say the least, so I need to study more before I even think of doing another digi SP. That environment is coming along very well. It's going to look gorgeous. I'm jealous. Looking forward to seeing a full picture of that pure evil character. CGsociety is a great place. Haven't been there for ages though. Keep working hard, mate!

HumbleHenk

HumbleHenk

Another portrait of another bud.

He looks drunk but was not. We sat down one day and shot alot of photos of us doing various faces for this purpose actually. Painting references that is.

Think I nailed the values better with this one than with the previous two.

Same time here. One day, when I've mustered the patience I'll spend 10+ hrs on one. See how far I can take it with that much time on my disposal.

You've seen a pot-bellied alien before, but have you seen a pot-bellied alien BOXER before eh ? :P Perhaps you have. I know I haven't.

Anyways, a BW sketch which isn't really a sketch, too refind for that. Tried doing something pretty detailed without any refs. A lil' challenge.

Around 4 hrs.

HumbleHenk
May 25th, 2009, 06:11 PM
A 4 hour portrait of some nude model from the internet. You get the steps too. I worked from a photo thumbnail, no zooming. Reason for no zooming was to not to rely too much upon the reference. I "cheated" at one stage, which is evident in the steps. Made the face too long and shortened it by lowering half of the face just a lil' bit. The finished version is slightely adjusted, form and value wise. Not too happy about this.

But it was good practise.

HumbleHenk
May 26th, 2009, 01:49 PM
A lil' something. Trying out some light from below this time. Looks a bit like some vampire from the Buffy series.

no ref.

HumbleHenk

Yngling
May 27th, 2009, 03:59 PM
Very very nice. Your sense of form and lighting is amazing! One thing I noticed though, when you render skin, you almost always go for a 'gloss finish' of sorts, with specular highlights aplenty. It looks great, no offense, but it doesn't 'feel' skinlike. On your 'ass-studies' and referenced works however, the more matte surface works wonderfully. Maybe you could try to mix them, so you can have more variety and liveliness in your skin surfaces. Like in a face, the cheeks are never as shiny as the nose for example.

Still, I am nowhere near this level yet, so feel free to do with this comment as you wish:P

HumbleHenk
May 27th, 2009, 04:15 PM
VogelA: Thanks man! Means alot.

Yngling: Yeah, I've thought of this during the process of this one. I want to get a more realistic look for my characters and the hard part with that, for me anyways, is to first establish the right values and keep them during the detailing. (I got one of John Brown's sculpting videos running in my head ^_^ Words about the same issues you mention here. ) But I think it'll be fixed when I've worked on the skintextures (breaking up lines, adding pores, birthmarks etc.).
Right now it's mostly the basic forms of the face.

Thanks alot for the input. Genuinly appreciated!

HumbleHenk
May 29th, 2009, 07:10 PM

I love the gambler (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=580342&stc=1&d=1233450400). Very interesting creature, especially the colour you achieved in his skin. You have this glow and nd waxy shine going that's very interesting. Not sure about the background, though. This portrait (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=679533&stc=1&d=1243189312) is fantastic too. A shame you didn't finish.

Ahh, fantastic work here ( I came through your DA page, haha). Lovin the attention to detail and all the cool creature heads.Your hand studies are very very nice too.
I'd like to see you experiment a little more with color - try a range of hues, patterns and such(and that's advice I should be following myself) You're very good with the form/lighting already, some more color experiments and you'll be superawesome!

Wow, so I found my new favorite sketchbook. There isn't an image in here that I don't like, I have sore eyes from putting them back in every time they fell out when I saw the next piece.

The stages of development you show on some of the images are so helpful to a complete begginer like me.

One thing though, someone should have told you that you can't just post photographs for your self portraits! hehe :)

Good to be back.
I'm sorry guys. Haven't been able to paint or sketch for some time now because of my part-time job. Construction work oriented stuff. And we've also had a special holiday here in sweden, so I've been "dragged" around to various parties here and there. ^_^

First of all: Thank you everyone for the lovely comments. Makes me more enthusiastic about showing more stuff. Means alot!

and:

Iridyse: :) nice to here the network works. I think 'bout this all the time mate and I sure will work on it. I thank you genuinely.

jigje: I'm glad to here that. I'm gonna post some more process steps of various works in the future. I know I love to see the steps of other's pieces.
And yeah, sorry 'bout the photos :P No, but really I'll also post some of the reference photos for future selfportraits.

Criminal Components: Yep, trying to challenge myself more nowadays though. Thanks a bunch.

Troubadour: Thanks. Yes, I think I've done something about those issues which you'll see in this next submission.

You'll only get this update today. But something more'll come tomorrow methinks.

Lots of great rendering and use of light and shade here. It’s good that you are pushing things a bit and drawing stuff that you normally don’t. The full body minotaur is looking good I think. As mentioned earlier the legs look a bit unbalanced but if you fix that it would look solid. Does he not have hands? It appears that you start to do fine details before you have finished the basic structure.

Some of the monsters are amusing, while a couple are kinda disgusting haha. Great details and rendering.

Your technique--painting from dark to light--reminds me of Bobby Chiu's technique. It has a kind of earthy feel, while focusing on the three-dimensional-ness of the object. Although this can be easily organized in rendering a single character without a background, the technique might cause problems for more complex situations. It may be more beneficial to lay in the value as it is (or as close as you anticipate, with adjustments later); that way, you can organize from the start how you want your composition to look like.

I'm really a newb, and I should be working on this too...but this is what my painting teacher tells me haha. Work from big to small.

Sometimes you see Sketchbooks like this; sketchbooks which make you feel both inadequate and inspired. Your work is amazing, sir. :) I would love to see more 'step-by-steps', since I feel that I could learn a lot from those, and they're very interesting to explore.

Anyway, keep up the magnificent work. Definetely bookmarking this. :)

Bergulf:
Thanks. Yeah, I had no real plan for the minotaur so I haven't added the hands yet since they're an essential part of the character when doing humanoids. And, I didn't know that it would turn into a minotaur until I added the head.
But yes I'm sometimes too eager during the process of a piece ^_^

YihyoungLi:
Lovely ^_^ Yes. I'm usually more structured though when working on more complex pieces. But sometimes I need to render an area to figure out where I want to go with the piece.
When doing more simple works like this minotaur I generaly work on 3 layers. 1st: BG, 2nd: structure and 3rd: rendering layer. That's my base structure of the layers. When I get an idea during the process which I'm not sure about I add another "expermentation layer". After the idea is tested and if I like it, I usually merge it with the rendering layer.

Arthe Xavier:
Thanks a bunch! Warms me heart ^_^

Just these two today. Been working on a submission so haven't done much else.

Sorry for not being active. Have had alot of living life stuff going on ^_^ Moving in a month or so, so I want to see my people a bit before I go. And I've been doing some construction work and whatnot on top of that. I'm moving to Gothenburg here in sweden to artschool for two years. So you can bet your newborns that I'll be 100 times more active when that time comes. Anyways..

A portrait of Evangeline Lilly and the steps. Hope you get a hang of how I work when doing portraits. If not ? Ask ;).

Pushed the realism a bit further this time. ( I seem to have no serious problems with rendering and detailing while doing portraits, it's always the forms which is hardest to nail. About 10 hrs, photoshop.

Some really good rendering skills you have. In your work I see a lot of the "cool" monsters that everyone creates on here (yours are very unique for sure) that doesn't really tell a story. If you want to be doing these for practice and just character concepts sure! Great! but if you want to start creating pictures I would like to see you push things further and pull everything together.

I was wondering what type of settings you use on your brushes, cool man.

jigje: Thank you. This is one of the directions I want to take my art.

Samuel Gray: Thanks. I agree completely with ye. I'm just in a mindless sketching mode right now, doing half-assed stuff to keep it going.
As I said before; I'm moving soon to a big town to study at an artschool. (I'll be sure to get my shit together then. Me promise. ;) ) So I'm busy enjoying the company of friends and whatnot while I still can.
As for the brushes I just use a standard round brush with pressure sensitivity, sometimes for some textures I enable the scatter (if it's called that in english) setting on this round brush. Sometimes I alsouse an airbrush with low opacity.

Here's just some crappy quickies. The more complex pieces I've submitted wip's of will have to wait a while. Have patience ^^

Been a while. Reason for that is the fact that I haven't had an internet connection at my new place, here in Gothenburg.

A bunch of croquis and other stuff from school. As you can see I'm a real newbie on how to work the pencil when it comes to fast stuff like these. Started of with pencil and ended up with using a graphite crayon (1cm wide). Thought that worked better for me since I like to work more with forms than lines.

It sure is challenging, but damn fun.

Here're some croquis, more Muybridge and the first Painting from school (pretty small). Forgot to post it a while back. Acrylics and kinda embarassing.

My most optimal preconseption of my future as an artist at the moment, is having a freelancing career of conceptart and illustrations with a lucrative "fine art" career on the side, or vice versa.
Allthough I've grown pretty confident in my digital art (which would probably be the medium within the freelancing deal) I don't know what I want to do traditionally. Many ideas are there but the prefered form of execution isn't. Sometimes, in a state of frustration I fool myself and start hateing acrylics, but thinking clearly I believe it's a technique and style issue. I'm still to find the perfect formula for me.

Anyways, no more rambling. Here's the shit:

Some 5 min poses drom head. Not used to the wacom when sketching. Don't understand how some of you can get such smooth lines. I'm fucking struggling to nail a decent head-shape >8/ .

Anyways as you can see I'm no good. I still have problems with legs and the hips. I've realised that I need to practise keeping track on the whole shape during the process. That's why I tend to make legs too short. I seperate the torso from the hips and legs in the process and forget about checking the proportions. I mean give me time and I can nail most things, giving me time to spot the faults. I just need to get more efficient.

I've realised that I've used references way to much for the human body, I need to start doing more from head, to figure out the shapes and turn it into more of a thinking process. And to work fast I really really really need to practise that shit. Gonna do a few everyday.

If you don't get a daily update send me some anthrax.

Man tackar. Enbart till mig? Känner mig mäkta smickrad isåfall. ;)

Really nice colors and rendering, especially on the one in the right corner. Very natural and realistic.

It feels like I'm spamming your sketchbook, haha. :P

SVENSKE!

Hihi^^ Jävligt heit djevel tjej^^ Värkligen bra tekstur på huden och det ser ut som om anatomien är bra, men halen fungere inte. Den ser ut som om den är laget av plastikk.

Just in case my swedish is absolute shait, the point was that the tail isn't working for yours truly.

Kul at finne enda en från norden:)

Hmm.. Loooong time no being here or anywhere else internet-wise for that matter. Been off exploring silly stuff like fine art, life and people. Feel it's time to change that. Been itching in my fingers to start drawing muties, hellspawns and other cool stuff for some time now. So I start off with some old studies and doodles that's been lying around and later on some new stuff.

DefiledVisions: I'm back! :) Göteborg yes. Studerar ett litet tag till fram tills sommaren sen är det dax att bli vuxen.

Your figures are fantastic.

Also, I don't know if it has to do with how you're compressing them or what, but some of your digitals look like hi-rez pixel art, which is kind of cool.

SpiralHorn: Thank ye. Hmm, hi res pixelart. Ah well I'll accept that.

Mikko Voipio: aweful thing to do :) Yeah, drawn on A3 photopaper. Was an experiment so it took a little longer than expected.

Thanks guys.

Here is a couple of new ones. These were the first digital things I recently did after a 7-8 months break from digital art/illustration/concept art. Been trying to figure out what I want to do.
I've always separated my illustration/concept works from my more personal works, and I've spent the time exploring the latter these past months. It's been a good ride so far but I've come to the conclusion that illustration is the path I want to take right now. So I've started capitalizing on what I've learned and started painting digitally again. Anyways..

And a sort of medieval mercenary type guy. (Been playing a lot of Mount&Blade)

Nice! I like the way this turned out (the Oh crap! piece). Branching out with the colour choices? It's still got your signature lighting, which is always brilliantly rendered. Subject matter reminds me of that indy game on Steam, Capsized. Except underwater...?

Looking at the wip and the final version, I feel like I know a bit more about your methods. Some of it looks familiar; perhaps we are at a similar stage, or just render things similarly? It's just that the wip is no indication of how tight the finished result ends up being. The wip displays a lot of brush strokes; essentially, you had overdone it at that point, but it didn't come through in the final piece. I find this happens with me too. I think the point is to simply paint more and you'll get more efficient. My latest piece has seen me break that stroke-happy method and just start to slam the colours down, no fear! Know what I mean? This kind of skill-tightening is overlooked I think, even though it's a crucial stage, and it's one of the main differences between the seasoned pros and the rest of us. But as I said before, the end result covers this up completely, so I suppose the main benefit left is a reduction in rendering time, which is always good, lol.

Anyway, the way you've controlled the light is great; the red glow from the helper bot is appropriately overemphasized and contrasts well with the green. The atmosphere is nicely hinted at in the background too (mushrooms look sweet!). As for the composition, I think there could be a little more happening; the main issue is with the large grassy hill thing that frames the areas of interest. Perhaps increasing the complexity in its shape could add something, or adding more variation of some kind, just to help with all of that space in the middle. The arc that frames the protagonist is cool though. And finally, the armour of the protagonist seems to be made of an ambiguous material, and seems under-rendered, compared to the rest.

First of all, thanks Phil.

About the process and slapping down colours. As many times before this one started out as a simple experiment with sketching and gradients and ended with me zoneing in on stories, nostalgia, techniques and whatnot. I spent a few hours at the beginning trying out different compositions and a few quite bold (for me at least) slaps with colour :) Didn't take too long before I lost myself in it and let things slide. I tried challenging myself to venture into new areas technique-wise. For better or worse though, I soon realized it looked like my stuff usually do.

I guess I need to have more slapping done!

The things you critique are some of the issues I was a bit concerned with after I finished. For ex. I was much more pleased with the background 10 steps back when I had just sketched it out. Something got lost when the detailing and value tinkering started. (repainted 3 times I think)

Also so long since I worked on something more complex. Relearning a few things ( = time loss). The psd file was a fucking mess ( = time loss).

I put the issues aside and decided it finished, had spent enough hrs on it already anyway. I bare with me what I learned and venture on.

Thanks Roope: Keep on pushing them skills mate!

Here are todays doodles. Some quick mountains and a wip (half an hour in) of my next piece. Atleast I think it will be. Have a few ideas..

And yes, an old butt I found lying around.

Environments since I need to do them. Trying to keep the process simple and effective so far.
