It's reminds me of my sisters old horse, that animal was crazy! Battled around in painter, and tried some different brushes. I still think it looks a bit flat, and the colors are a bit boring. Anyway...

vijil : Thats one big animal, but where are the seats :D

davi : It rocks as usual. Though the colors seem very light, they work very well.

Bretton : cool idear, allthough I wouldn't have the heart to kill it with the mask off. :)

krAtul : Thats neat! It somehow reminds me of the game morrowind... though I don't know why.

Wow, some solid work already! This will probably turn into a hot thread.

Scumworks -- Cool demonic-looking beast. Be nice to see the 'mounting portion'. Nonetheless great job. Nice bulky forms too.

krAtul -- Excellent sketch work. Some really creative ideas. I like the beast whose hind quarters levitate.

Davi -- What an unusual creature. It definitely has that 'beast of burden' look to it. Great work.

Hi folks!

Here we go, er, fly again. I know not that alien, but hey, I thought it was a cool idea. Had no ref for the eagle, so please tell me whether it's crooked or ok.

http://www.auner.net/images/eagle.jpg

There are already some very cool entries here. Especially love yours Kratul, and davi's beast. Can't wait to see a more detailed sktech of that one...
An Breton, take the lower head. It's got ,"Hey I don't what I'm doing look." Fitting for a war beast, I gather.

krAtul: awesome design!

i didn't pay much attention to design, unfortunately...

needed to practise animals, and obviously, still do...

all attempts to add scales failed miserably...

light & shadow still borked, but i'm learning...

believe me or not,the hardest part to design was the bg.i wanted to add some kind, but i felt that would distract from the creature.photoshop, don't know how long it took, but i assume about 30 minutes again...it didn't feel very long at least.

Theres nothing wrong with your rider hanging from the belly, he is still riding it no? In fact I think it would be quite cool to do something like that. You will feel the wrath of the red text if the post is completely off topic tough :evilbat:

eobet: great concept, nice and clean too. Good to see you post again :). seems alot of us old-style (topics in mIRC) DSGers stopped posting as often with the change in DSG style.
I really liked how everyone would be talking in IRC as we simultaneously worked on our DSGs. Even if conversation was minimal because we were all painting. Ah well good to see you. ;)

I had done a similar painting like this months ago. Unfortunately I lost it due to a faulty hard drive. Anyhow, I found the original sketch, scanned it and repainted it for this thread.

Just noticed, in my haste, I forgot to paint in his tongue. So if you're wondering what that black line is...it's the line art to his tongue.

danielh68 - Good perspective and colors.

Noodle - It's unique. I'd like to see it more defined / developed.

plaf - Way to keep those hard edges. Very well defined and a nice concept.

yoba - Your piccy made me laugh. Good stuff.

Carnifex - I like your use of color.

DraigAthar - Reminds me of a llama. Cool concept.

Jebus - Interesting. I like the monster's facial expression. He/she looks very annoyed.

eobet - Cool :chug:

Scumworks - Very creepy. I dont like that look he's givin me.

krAtul - Cool idea. I like both the rider's and creature's design.

Bretton - Nice style. Very original.

Davi - Great work as usual. I like how you simply took away the head and stuck the mouth on the torso. Very alien indeed.

vigil - Hehehe. Cute.

Bad bad bad me. I drew it on notebook paper. :bash:
I was studying and just decided to doodle stuff out and ran with it. So... it ended up being sketches with freakin periwinkle lines through it. Wee! I did not want to draw a "saddle" on him cause I wanted to show the protrusions from his spine. Large and heavy tail for balance and hitting things. And he hops long distances... AND... can swim. Multi-purpose/multi-Terrain :D

Had a hard time with this one. I learned a lot about coloring through this piece, even though it didn't turn out anywhere NEAR the way I wanted ... It almost looks better as just line art :P Oh well, I learned alot and had fun!

Okat, let me try to reply to everyone again ...

fresh27 - good one, I love all the big hulking beasts folks are coming up with.

Valcon Jet - looks good! I don't understand the head, though. Is it just looking down towards the ground, or what?

Beatnik - good one, though I'm not sure about him being able to stay balanced in that pose! Looks like he'd topple forward on his face.

Nike - nice concept, good job on the creature's head, and on the flames around him. The rest of the creature could use a little refinement, though, I think.

Crave - I bet riding that thing makes for a bumpy trip. :) *hop* *hop* *hop*

Kartoffel - love the spikes. how does it fly, though?

Halis_Aetrous - neat skin texture. Oh and I actually had a llama in mind when I started my sketch, lol, so good guess on that one. :)

danielh68 - very cool, I love the pose, and I never would have noticed the missing tongue if you hadn't pointed it out, haha!

Noodle - good start, keep at it.

plaf - LOL too funny. Neat sketch, too.

yoba - good english is not a requirement here. :) nice creature, it gets a winter coat too, eh? good job on your first!

Carnifex - I love purple. :)

Jebus - hey that sort of reminds me of something from a star wars movie, cool.

eobet - I like the creature, but I like the saddle and helmet you gave it even more

Xpressions - reminds me of the eagle in LOTR. you might want to dig up a reference for an eagle, though - they have MUCH bigger talons than that, for one thing. ;)

scumworks - lol, I'd be afraid to ride that one.

kratul - all of them are wonderful! I especially like the one in the top right.

davi - great sketch, the face is the best part :)

vijil - lol, big happy bitey indeed. :)

Whew!

I love this topic! I am putting up the sketch and then I am really going to try to color it right now, and come back with the color and more war looking feel. This is a Landale, an evolved species of whale that moved back onto land. Usually used as an extreme beast of burden, in war times it can easily adapt to running down entire enemy troops. The human pilots nestle themselves in the Landale's blowhole and are affectionately called "Boogers." -Back soon with the color!!

hey guys, here's mine for the day.

http://www.bradkurz.com/running.jpg

It is basically a kangaroo, but without the big ears and more substantial forearms. the guy riding it is supposed to be a crab-like alien with an exoskeleton. his head is heavily influenced by the Uruk-hai from the LOTR movies. anyways, hope you like it. i'm gonna eat something then post some feedback for your stuff.

Bkmini, the colors are beautiful, lots of movement...

I might do comments and crits later, but for now I'm just gonna post my pencil concept and then try and maybe color it this evening.

This is a symbolic relationship between nursery logs and fungus that grows on them. The ridden creature is partially coated in bark, and the old fungus man riding on his back is permanently attached. The reins are made of slime which reach into the rider beast's mouth. In return for the mobility and home that the tree beast gives its rider, the rider in turn feeds it and cares for it.

Underwater creature with cybernetic headwear that functions as a bridge. The alien sits inside the orb on the top. Houses a crew of 2.

The bridge/headress thing drove me nuts, I tried to fix the perspective but I
finally gave up on it.
Any advice to how to avoid perspective problems when designing headresses with a lot of organic shapes is appreciated.

Gave this whole coloring thing another shot, went with a more alien look hopefully....

let me know whatcha think

http://home.comcast.net/~jeffmajor/alienmount3.jpg

C&C's~

vijil: Wow, that looks like it'd hurt to ride into combat :) I like it alot, it's a great concept, but maybe you should look at the perspective on the rear spikes. Seems like they should be curving more inwards instead of way out like that.

Kratul: Those are amazing sketches, they remind me alot of fuchikomas(sp?) by shirow. Kickass!

Xpressions: The birds left wing seems like its jointed too high on the torso, i'd drop it down a bit. Also, I think the legs look kinda like chiken wings. I would check out some pictures of eagles on the web, then give it another go. It never hurts to study your subjects. Nice job though!

eobot: that saddle makes me want to cry tears of joy!! I can't really make out what's going on with the head though (yea, i'm a hypocrite, mines got a whacked out head ^_^) Nice pic!

Noodle: I like the pose, and it has good expression! One thing though: I'd recommend adding some defenition to the body. His arms just look like straight tubes and his head is just kinda round. I'd add some details to his muscles and facial structure.

yoba: Nice snow, that's sweet ;)

plaf: hardcore man, hardcore. the one thing that I think is missing is maybe a little bit of shine on the fur .. just some luminance. you're awesome, I love your style :P

Kartoffel: Wow, I love that :) Nice perspective on the spikes, and that little alien dude OWNS! Maybe at some highlights ... something like that I think would help.

bkmini: That's so awesome it hurts. The painting is perfect! The only thing I can think is that the riders pose seems a little too relaxed ... He's just kinda hangin out, seems like he should be leaning foreward screaming with his legs tucked under him or something. Awesome awesome pic dude.

Saphhire: sweet detail, and awesome job on the shading :) It's a bit hard to make out whats going on past the knees though. Seems to be a face on its right shoulder, and some guy with a mushroom head sitting on top of that ...

Sorry i can't C&C everybody I gotta get back to work, but I think all the pieces here are insanely awesome and creative! kickass guys.

I'm still working on mine, but I needed a break. So Ill comment. ^^

vijil - Thats a really cute erm big guy. ^^ Your guy inspired mine.

davi - Very interesting, I like the shape of it and the face is really cool.

Bretton- That thing looks so innocent. Kinda like bambie. The saddle was well made too. Good job

krAtul - Really cool designs, The one does remind me of a slitstrider! I loved killing those things.

scumworks - Id have loved to see the whole thing! The face is really neat. I could totally see that in some game with a little dude one it.

Xpressions - I like how you colored that. ^^ I agree that some reference might help with the form. Also it might be good to use some more values with the markers. Bring some more depth into the picture.

eobet - Love that saddle and the extra gear on the guy. I think with the lights and shadow you should just keep pushing the values a bit. ^^
That would pop him out even more.

Jebus - Cool creature, reminds me of something I used to draw. I suggest maybe using a few different values (Woah am I just on a kick with that today) and lines in your piece. It seems that theres really only one line throughout the piece. Maybe if you had a light h2 or just pressed lightly with a pencil and add a few muscle lines or lines with the tail, and then maybe on the outline use some heavy dark lines. ^^ I might be wrong with that though..

DraigAthar - I like how that guys put together. Kinda half dragon, horse, deer, lion type thing. Very cool.

Carnifex - Cool colors,:D I like the dude on his back. Though maybe you should define just a bit more? I love wacom too, I find it hard to use and harder to define things at times though haha.

yoba - I like how you clothed your beatsy. Also the colors work really well. :D

plaf- lets face it I just love ya man.. :P Great strokes.:D

Noodle- Keep goin with that one. ^^ It has load of potential.

danielh68- Really neat. I like how you did the trees and the backround. The beastys done well too, haha Im probably not the most helpful for ya. :P

Halis_Aetrous - Ya know what might be kinda cool on you guy. Totally my imo, if you are using PS and you use hardlight (not 100%) and did a few green and yellow highlights and lowlights here and there that could give him kinda a snaky metallic feel.

Kartoffel - Haha that guys scary, Actually both are. :D Great spikes.

Crave My Nightmares - Cool guy. I like the way you did the details on his back and body.

Nike- I wish I could see more of your creature too. Though I agree the head and flames are well done .:D

Beatnik- Creepy, but great colors. Face kinda like an evil bulldog in a way. :D

Valcon Jet- I love that body. Very cool! I like how you redid it too.

fresh27- Hes so cute! I want one. Great structure.

Rockhead- awesome. Seriously cool.

bkmini- I really like it. Cool design, and great colors. :D

Sapphire- Beautiful Pencilwork.:D

aera1020 - Neat creature, Looks like he has very wide legs. Keep going with it.:D

josephrey - Cute!

one- I don't think its too humanoid. That kinda gives it an odd feel. its good. I wouldnt change that.

paper slayer - I wish I could help with tips on perspective, but you probably know a lot more than I. Though I like the design, so I hope you keep going with it.

Phew,... well now Back to doodlin. ^^

Wow, a whole bunch more posts! Let me catch up ...

Sapphire - that's a great concept, and your colored version is nicely done.

Prince of Space - it was worth the wait! what a great idea, love the coloration on the carapace

Valcon Jet - I think I like the purple one better! :)

josephrey - lol, looks like it belongs in the last mech DSG we had. :)

sone_one - it's a fantasy creature, give it a human-like chest if you want to! ;)

paper slayer - ooh, that's a creepy one. dunno what to tell you about the perspective, I struggle with perspective myself so I'm not really the best advisor!

bkmini - I love it. The creature, the motion of it, the rider, I just love it.

rockhead - hah! a Landale, that's great. the colored version is quite good.

xaviuzz - that looks like a pretty mischevious kangaroo!

Very nice submissions tonight.

Sapphire - very strange and interesting concept. I find the line work the strongest element out of the entire composition. When you have time, it would be cool to introduce some of the bark color into the creature's green areas and vice-versa, same with the red mushroom hat and the riders gray skin. It might enhance the color harmony of the composition. Nonetheless, great job.

PriNcE oF SpAcE - this is my personal favorite. I'm not sure if one would board or mount this creature. In any case, very clever concept. Awesome coloring and detailing.

cartoonfox - love the warm color scheme and the cool blue accent in the staff. Really makes for an amazing piece. I feel sorry for the guy's crotch on impact, though. Again, amazing work.

sone_one - hmmm, it looks like you have a good start to me. You definitely have most of the values established. I would continue to plug away.

Rockhead - Really cool. Love the evolutionary concept behind it. Great work.

xaviuzz - Neat painting style. Nice work.

My fingers tire. Must go. Awesome work everyone.

Sometimes it just goes easier with some goof ya know?

What better mount for an alien than a semi-intelligent enslaved human?

wystro: that's bad ass. the sky reminds me of the lava in your last DSG. it's a cool effect, so keep pushing it.

everyone: good work. thanks to all who liked my piece. I'm pretty happy with the color scheme. I have really been struggling with my color pallettes since I started painting in photoshop about a month ago. the DSG and the coloring book thread have been a huge help.

as for all the crotch comments, all I gotta say is... aliens don't got nards.

seriously though I thought about that so I had him riding the thing like a bull rider. see how he is leaning back and putting all his weight on the stirrups? when the kangaroo lands he stands up and saves his crotch. heh, at least that's my story and I'm stickin to it.

DraigAthar: Thanks! Your creature looks cool. Its head is quite horse-like. I think perhaps if you connected the lower mouth with the beak width-wise it would make it look a little more attached.

PriNcE oF SpAcE: That is a very cool concept, I really like the rein attached to its jaw; that's a nice touch.

Rockhead: This would be neat to see all finished, since it's looking good. It reminds me of that whale creature from Monster Rancher 2.

Faxtar: I love little concept sketches, these are great.

Madgiraffe: thanks for your comment!

skank: great perspective!

daniel68: Thank you very much. I tried your suggestion, but I'm not sure if I did enough color mixing... is this what you meant? (And I really love the colors on yours... so warm and golden.)

Wystro: HOLY SHIT that's awesome. I literally said that out loud when I saw your pic. No crits at all. Beautiful. Whatever you did with that, you did it right! Harness it, never let it go!

Sapphire: Yes, I can see it now, and I love the color job :) Good work!

Idiot Apathy: LMAO @ ur blue guy. Haha, lots of expression, very cool :)

Faxtar: Wow, every one of those is freakin awesome :P

Litchpartikel: Cool color, and I agree with the putter comment, an alien would ride that to battle on the 8th green!

Skank: Teachin us all what greyscale can do :P That's badass.

Miau: I like the top one alot better. The coloring you gave it gives it a wistful feeling, nice choice of placement and softness.

Mad Giraffe: :eep: he's mean looking. Nice concept, but the coloring job makes it look really blurry and undefined. Put in dark and light spots to create contrast and give defenition to his form, imo.

Iori: Awesome! The hair on the top one is saweeeeeeeetah!

Prince of space; very origonal concept, and very nice color job :) The box's perspective looks off. and the mouth looks 2 dimensional without an inside / rows of teeth. Sweet ride tho man :)

I think I got everybody, so ima head to bed, awesome peices tonight!

davi - That might've been a sleepy quick one, but it's got a hell of a lotta character!
krAtul - Those are just gorgeous! I don't remember seeing your stuff here... but I certainly hope to see more. Really really sharp work.
DraigAthar - Awww! Shades of Gryphon, I think? Nice toes!
danielh68 - Good one, Dan! Great mood and sense of movement, too.
Rockhead - My sworn enemy... Awesome creature! Although the coloured one is nice, I think I prefer the more textured drawing.
bkmini - I don't like that tail weapon, but the rest of it is great!
PriNcE oF SpAcE - That's fantastic! Love it love it love it! Way to have an awesome concept, dude.
Sapphire - Very cute and creative! The colour helps a lot. Glad you like mine, and thanks for your well-wishes for my cat... I'll pass them on to her.
Miau - I like the second one. The expression is great. Neck chain-mail looks good!

hey people thanks for all the nice comments and crits!

as you've might has guessed I'll most likely brush this beast up some, since there were somethings that were done the way they were because I was drained in the end. and I slightly hurried myself so that atleast I would submit a finished(heh...atleast pretty finished) main piece.

anyways here's some of the things you can expect:

corrected cropping...which actually wasn't cropping but the end of the paper:rolleyes:

corrected/brushed up mouth, thanks for the crit Valcon!

that size refference dude is wrong...I simply forgot to remove him because I was so eager to post the pic. when it was "done" :D

mostlikely I will figure out a lil' something for the background.

probably will finish up/colour the very rought concept sheets.

bkmini - I don't like that tail weapon, but the rest of it is great!

Hand: I wasn't sure about that part either. Do you mean that it needs to be painted more? or you do not like the design of it. personally, I like think all of the armored parts could use some work. Thanks for the feedback.

You're piece is stunning, but I have one small crit. It's a bit monochromatic. Like your muscle man, I think it would be nice to see some more tones introduced. You have a very developed painting style, but I would like to see you experiment more with color. Lighting is dead on. Value, depth, and design are all great. Now lets see you push the color. :)

By the way, if you don't mind me asking, how long do you typically spend on a pic like that? I feel like I could bring something to that level of tightness and detail, (not to sound too egotistical) but it would probably take me at least 8 hours or so. Pics like the kangaroo generally take me around 3 hours. Is that right or will I get faster?

Thanks for the help.

Awww! I was moving and missed this really cool topic. I find it a little strange though, that most of these "alien" mounts are ridden with saddles and such that would be used by humans, and indeed there are humans for scale reference... I would have liked to see some more crazy creative riding aparatus for non-two legged species... Like how would a blob or octopus ride something? But damn, I guess I can't talk because I didn't even do the topic. :( :D

sorry to add another one, i didnt see the later ones before.

prince of space: now THAT is a nice concept drawing. You obviously put plenty of thought it it and the rendering is really nice too

Pox: very nice coloration, although i think more could be done to plant him in the environment, especially to make his feet appear more planted in the ground. Maybe some variation in the shadow.

Very nice work all

William b. Hand
December 7th, 2003, 01:42 PM
bkmini - I just don't like the design of the tail bead... The concept is sound, but I think this one looks goofy and detracts from the rest of the piece, since your eye (well... my eye) tends to start from the left and read it to the right, like text. So, it's like beginning an elegant phrase with an obscenity. Uh... Or... Something.
I'm glad you like my pic so much - Thanks! Yeah, that monochromatic thing... Well, I think you're right about that. I began this piece inspired with the memory of a painting by John Gurche, that appeared on the cover of Nat'l Geographic magazine many years ago, of a bunch of crested dinosaurs bathed in some golden dusk.

I couldn't remember how much variation in colour there really was, but I don't think it was a lot. Anyway, I figured I would do any experimenting with colour toward the end of the painting... which I'll be doing soon.
(I began dropping in some different colours last night actually, but it's not worth posting until I've finished it.)

I'm glad you feel I have a very developed painting style, because I feel a bit shaky. As far as lighting, value, depth, and design... still fumbling around with that. That's why my lighting tends to be no more complex than one or two highly contrasting light-sources... Sorta Black-Light stuff, really. Value... I've always liked high-contrast stuff... Is that what you meant? And as for depth... I'm brand new to it. The sense of depth you see in this pic is something I've never done... In fact, the mere existence of a landscape is extremely rare in my work and something I'm forcing myself to wrestle with. Design is by the seat of my pants - always. The colour does need more work. My whole life I've avoided using colour, and never dipped my toe into that pool until Photoshop entered my life. So... I learn incrementally, and even the very slight variations in colour on this pic took some consideration. Having such a dramatic light source confused me, though... I'll post something more of this soon.

I appreciate the nudging, by the way :D .

As for your question about time spent... Well, that varies.
Since there were a lot of areas in this pic that I was pushing myself on, I spent a good deal more time than I typically would for DSG. The first pic was approximately 1.5 hours. Anytime I'm working on something that's gonna take me more than that to complete, I make a point of posting the 1.5 hour results first.

The second pic I might've spent as many as four more hours on, I didn't really pay attention because I decided I'd just use whatever time was necessary. I hope that creating a picture like that will take less and less time, of course :) .

You know from your own experience that the more "speedy" techniques you learn -- and the more practice in any techniques you use -- the faster you can create.

Sometimes the creative limits to a painting aren't rooted in your imagination or thought process, but in a restrictive technique that needs revision or replacement. Always continue to strengthen technique that you are familiar with, but be open to the possibility that something totally different might better suit your vision.

Yeah, I think your kangaroo will go faster for you as you learn more, and MUCH faster if you learn fast techniques. If speed is a goal, then make it a practice.

Hope some of that helps... I'm a rambler.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Velo - I agree with you 100%. I got so caught up in the steed itself that I put the alien in there almost as an afterthought. I could stand to put a bit more thought into my pieces before I begin them. You shoulda set the standard early on -- Where were you??!

I like the high contrast in your pic, but by value I meant how you handle the relationships between light and shadow in general. I'll try to keep pushing you as long as you keep pushing back, deal?

Thanks for the bit of info about your painting time. I plan to get into that whole speedpainting thing. I generally sketch pretty loosely so I would love to develope a loose painting style. For now, like you, I am learning in increments. It's sorta like when you first start drawing, you use a lot of lines. As you get better, you use a lot less lines. Same way with brush strokes and painting. Anyway, I'm rambling now.
