Advice and crits are always welcome more than anything. I'm here at CA to find teachers, whatever your creds.

I am back after a bit. Of course I never stop drawing. However i will not post some work from my time gone as they are many fullbody pregnant self porttraits from month to month. And I didnt feel much like drawing or much like myself at all while pregnant. It was not planned but I had a daughter in August. I find her extremely hard to draw. I must find new ways to prioritize my time. I moved to nrthern Washington. There are many good schools up here. Since I will finally be old enough to take out my own student loans, I will start school in the Spring. I will be getting my general AA and plan to transfer to PLU to obtain my BFA in painting and a minor in legal studies, and then go on to law school. I finally have a scanner again and am back in mode so here are some works. Some selfpos, studies, my daughter, my husband, and figure drawings from a figure drawing session. The model couldnt hold a pose very well but it was a free session.

Art's something that's been with me since I was a kid. Since I can remember I've been inspired by the covers of my father's humongous library of sci/fi/fantasy books and video game booklets since the SNES. I'd stay up till 3 or 4 AM under the covers of my bed just copying them.

Some of this stuff I already hate, but posting it for the sake of my progress. sorry for the poor scan qualities in some I'm still trying to figure out a new scanner.

Halfway through doing this I realized that I wasn't learning that much new from it.. I finished the face because I hate to not, but it really doesn't push anything >: (

at this point I'm gonna comtinue studying anatomy until I feel confident enough to draw my own figures. Not gonna make any more like this until it comes from my own head!!!!!!!

Oh yea, and does anyone have any clues on how to make me scanner suck less balls? It's a HP photosmart C5280 all-in-one. Of course it doesnt help that the paper is sort of low quality and I had no pointer blender ...

Your anatomy studies are pretty sweet :) You have a lot of potential, so please, keep it up :)

And the copy from preacher is great too :)

January 28th, 2009, 04:18 PM
Thanks Quickenobi, I still love Dr. Slump even though I 'm 21 now >< You can't read preacher without loving cassidy. yes I will keep it up thank you

I'm slowly learning that's it's important to fill in as much of my figure as I can WITHOUT copying the reference, and only use it when I get really lost. As a result I lost some accuracy and quality, but I also moved much faster and learned much more from these..

Stacybean

more study! Sorry, I know at this point my sb is boring as hell to look at but I WILL get to where I can make eye popping works one day, I hope. It will feel so good to not have to put someone else's name in the attachment copyright one day, but right now I still feel like I need to study basics.

There is a problem with it though...I mean, even after drawing all these skulls, I told myself I was going to do a page of my own skulls. I made one little tiny one you see in the bottom left..but beyond that I was unable to find the faith in my imagination to do more. It's intimidating to me : /

Anyway, I didn't realize how important, complex and interesting the bones were until I did 'em. I got Peck's book on thursday. What I should have bought is a pointer blender!!!

Some rare things from imagination! One of a random girl in a stoic pose which is pretty much where I'm at right now, I am kind of embarrassed of it, but I have to start somewhere. One is sposed to be baba yaga for this week's chow, where she's stopping at the water. I think I remember from a story I read when I was really young, that she was chasing a girl who threw a magic comb or something and it turned into a lake to stop her. I loved the dark stories of her as a girl so I drew that just for fun, because I am definitely not ready to actually participate in the chow at this point lol.

Sorry about the light pencil, I should have gone over them in something not 2H

hey good start. I am at a similar level, just started drawing in december. so mainly my SB is studies, kinda boring but neccessary.

what I find helps a lot is gesture sketching, once a week I go into town and draw people quickly for a couple of hours. doesn't matter how they turn out, but my brain hard drive remembers proportions and poses much better this way. so I can spot mistakes in my other work.

another website I use everyday is posemaniacs.com where I also do lots of short poses. honestly these 2 activities have improved me the most. now I just need to learn where all the muscles and bones are... that's the hard part.

I would also recommend learning photoshop, do a little every day - it will make it much easier when you come to use it.

Anyway good start, you're still really young - wish I was drawing at your age. keep on practicing and you'll be awesome in no time!

Stacybean
February 21st, 2009, 11:06 PM
Hey thanks for the comment Alextooth! Good to know someone kinda understands where I'm at. Youre right, I'm really comfortable with book studies, but as you can see up there when I tried to do some gestures quickly I failed miserably, so I need to practicethat more. I have meant to do some posemaniacs, but I keep getting distracted by my Peck book, when I have at least a basic comprehension of the bones and muscles from there is when I plan to seriously move into gestures. I SHOULD do more color work >.< I will get on it.

Here is some pelvis. I think this was the hardest bone for me to get a grasp of so far. I am almost to the muscle section.

Good looking studies indeed! I do however feel that some of the figures feel a bit too unbalanced, like the weight not being distributed correctly. Keep postin'

cheers!

Stacybean
February 23rd, 2009, 02:14 AM
Thanks noodledoodle! I mostly noticed that heppens to me in my imaginary drawings I have a really hard time with that, and making the figure look, I guess, "grounded" and balanced. I wasn't able to see that it was showing up in my studies, but now I see that you're right. So now I have to really work a lot harder on improving that. If you hadnt said anything I wouldn't have looked back on them and would have thought they were OK the whole time, so I really appreciate the crit.

Here are some animal studies. I am still going to continue my human studies just as hard, these are something I am doing on the side in a thread in the mentor section. I also hope maybe it can supplement my figure studies, at least in certain ways.

I think you and I have the same teapot. Is it black with sakura flowers? It definitely exactly the same shape with the same wooden carrier thing. I drew mine once too. Your line art is progressing quickly. I can't think of really any improvements in terms of being on the right track. It looks and feels like you're taking the time to patiently look at your mark making, your linework, your shadows, your proportions... looks like you're checking everything, so that's very very good. Your observation will improve... I don't really see areas where things go horribly wrong, you seem to be really on top of it and where you have problems, your next studies are showing you are addressing them. That's key I think.

Hello Stacy.
I think that it is no use
criticizing the work that you
posted two years ago, cause I
believe that you have improved
tremendously from then.
It is really cute to read something
about you in your firs post, and I
appreciate that, cause a lot of the
members who started a sketchbook here
do not consider that important,
and do not write anything about themselves,
so you do not know their age and you do
do not know anything about their art background.
Some of them do not reveal their gender either.
For me it is crucial to know about the artist
if he is 14 years old or is he is in his late 40's.
That makes a huge difference, cause one just cannot
review or criticize the work of those two persons
on the same way. It is just a different
psychological approach. Anyway I respect your
introduction lines there, and I like the facts that you
are into art since your childhood, and it is good
that you were always inspired by sci-fi works and
inspired by other artists. It is always good to
learn from other artists and to "steal" some knowledge
and technique from them, for combining it to one of
your own style in the end.
Your latest pencil drawings are ok if you ask me,
I am far from your level of shading and anatomy
knowledge, so I am just not going to criticize anything,
and I do not want to be smart here.
I would just like to encourage you, to post more
and to stay active.
Take care, I'll catch you later.

Snake Plissken, ThomasM, thank you for the kind words and encouragement. Means a lot to hear from talented people.

I don't have much experience with digital work so I am moving forward in it. I use painter X. I have no idea how to use painter X. I do everything with a fine camel brush in oils. I use a canvas of like around 1600-2500 pixels w/h. I use a wacom tablet and I go up to about 2 layers. I use blacknwhite reference pics. That I do not colorpick as I did on the first page because I realize that is a huge crutch to me.

I know jack shit about color and I'm not sure how much I know about value so I'm starting off black and white until I feel very comfortable to dive into scary colors. eight 20min speedpaints, chronological. One of them may have gone slightly overtime because I liked it too much and could not force myself to leave it.

Someone warned me in my sketchbook
for not outlining my figures on my drawings, cause
like that, I am making them look flat.

someone with more experience will
put more light on that subject, I am
just passing what I heard.
Keep postin.

wow, thankyou so much for the generous comments guys! They always inspire me to push and keep drawing more. Snake P. , i've been thinking about the heavy outlines myself lately. It's just something ive been doing since very young because i love finally getting the right line and making it really strong once i do. but it's probably something I need to grow out of because getting the right line is not longer such of a struggle for me, and it really doesn't match my detail and yes even though i still think it looks cool, i think that person is probably right it does take away from the depth of the picture. at this point i probably should be learning and experimenting with line weight instead :) thank you for the helpful comment, i want all the advice I can get all the time.

update, 2 book studies of the foot (i really struggle) and I went to my first life drawing class in a studio down in portland. It was an amazing experience! The owner of the studio told me that it would be a whole different horse than studying from books and he was really right. I learned a lot.

It was a three-hour session but I was late due to traffic. There are 3 5mins, 3 15mins, and 3 30mins.

Great pencil sketches, you've improved a lot during those years. It's very good that you've started to attend drawing classes, you'll get much better in no time! I got a lot of comments. Thanks for the encouragement guys =) also, if anyone sees something I should be more going towards or something i could push more or a certain piece i could push more in terms of builing a portofolio, that kind of stuff is really appreciate too. But I take everything said to heart.

medicago-- thank you! your stuff is amazing. I wish I had grasp on my imagination like yours. I really want to be able to draw things from my head. bu it has always all started to look like crap and make me lose my drive. for you I will work hard and put one together and see how it turns out. From there on actually I can probably start to draw more and as each one gets better it will actually hep to build my confidence rather than destroy it. I know that I do need to start somewhere so now would probably be a good time.

emil- your paintings are great, so, inspired, I did do a still life. I was going to make it color. I really do not have the confidence to do color yet. I went black and white and I still did learn a lot. It was a nice break in subject matter and i think also I underestimated what I can learn from them. The wine bottle was beyond my skill level, and even though the apple looks like a muddy mess i taught me a lot. Because i was a bright apple I was thinking it must be bright colors. But I learned that rather than that bright means more like there is more contrast between light and dark. Well, I already knew that but it drove it in in a different way. I hope I feel comfortable enough to work with colors soon. I want to do many more like this.

Some bloody brilliant stuff you have here, the studies show a great deal of dedication.

As a small crit, however, just pay more attention to the size of your heads in proportion to the bodies.
On some posts, the neck and head seem too wide for the shoulders they sit on.
Just practice proportions and I'm sure you'll quickly get out of the habit.

Some brilliant stuff so far, so keep up the good work! :D

Stacybean
December 6th, 2010, 05:50 PM
Thanks Naidy, I can see wat you are saying about the head sizes, I'll try to keep more of an eye on it in the future.

A few more studies and self portraits for now. Just a few until I can do more. I want to get cracking and do more more often. I had a dream that my sketchbook was full back to front. If I had been pushing myself, I could have been there by now.

Does the last self portrait seem suitable for a portfolio for applying to schools?

Beautiful work! Ha- don't feel old about just getting started now, I'm 12 years older than you and thinking the same thing... I want to go to art school! I spent many years doing jobs that I "didn't mind" just for the money. I didn't hate it, but it sure was unfulfilling. Go for it! You are quite accomplished already, I'm sure any school would be glad to have you :-)

LtPlissken
December 7th, 2010, 01:05 AM
You are making way too much space
between the eyes. That can be a crucial
mistake, on doing portraits.
The distance between the eyes is just
one eye width.

Stacybean
December 10th, 2010, 10:57 PM
Thanks guys!

Plis-- good catch, thanks. I'll wrangle those eyes in. They seem to have been growing farther apart as I kept drawing more pictures.

Emil: thanks for coming by again. I did an orange. I saved the WIP's so I have posted them here. I tried to do like Bumskee said. But as I was blocking in the basic colors, I kept looking to more range of colors that I saw (or in some cases only thought I saw) and that in turn grew into detail so it all got confused and muddy..it is one mess. I am unsatisfied with it, but I think I learned, so tomorrow I will try it again from scratch and I think it will do better.

It's realy frustrating because even the most beginning artist can make an amazing looking fruit look easy..it makes me want to run and do a pencil study like I'm comfortable with, but as much as I struggled it does feel good to finally be pushing to areas that I am afraid of because I know I need to learn this.

soliloquy: i was thinking lately about how when I look through others sketchbooks they are doing really cool and whimsical things. And I was like well why do I draw. All I do is stuffy studies and if I'm not having fun while drawing why do I do it. Well I already knew that's not the case but I was thinking that other people might wonder that when they look at my work. Well to me drawing is probably more like playing a sport. I don't do it because its fun though that's part of it, Ido it because even though I am working it relaxes me and exhilarates at the same time. Sometimes I will find that I have been holding my breath or that 2 hours have passed in a blink. So even though all that I do is copy and study right now, please don't believe that I am not passionate. I love everything that I have done so far. My goal is not to be able to create things for creation's sake but to be able to make things that can take my and others breaths away. Maybe I will not get there but I know that if I want to I have to study really hard. So maybe my stuff is boring right now, but it is not meaningless.

I also know from the dead end job (711) that I work now that whatever my career is will become my focus. I guess that is just the way im built (and parly my dad and grandpas doing). I can't think twice about it anymore. Right now I have to work full time to live, but I hope if I can push myself hard enough I can make school+art my focus next year with the help of pell grant FAFSA and (hopefully) scholarship.

That being said, I need to work harder! I cry your pardon for using this as a journal but this is the closest thing to one that I can keep regularly and I want to be able to look back and read it someday. so, until next time.

really gorgeous improvements stacy~ i have to agree with plissken on his long comment and yes, i read your intro of the sketchbook :D i don't think it's ever too late to do what you want to do and i'm happy that you want to go to art school :D it's funny that you mention how you drew from video game covers and all that-- because that's what i did when i was in elementary school! haha

Very good idea, doing digital
studies like you did here, on a regular basis.
I read in some of the tutorials, I have
followed through, that you should NEVER
use a white background, while painting, cause
it will make look any color darker than it is actually.
I am not sure is that right, I am just passing what
I read.

Ahhh, anatomy lessons from the great masters. Good book, I've got the hardcover version and i've always meant to go through it like you have here. Anyways, your shading tones are nice. Your portraits have an original style to them which is also good. Some of the anatomical features of the face seem a bit off though, however that'll work itself out if you keep at it. Cool beans!

Thanks for the comments and following guys.
Teapo: I was looking at your sb when you commented mine. thanks for your kind words it really cheered me up. Imaginative drawings are my biggest and scariest stip. Whenever Ido something from my head I just become so dissapointed and frustrated with it because my skill level at it is so low compared to what I can do with ref. I am just beefing up my repertoire of skills before I finally jump into it--I know I will have to force myself eventually because there will not be a point where I will just suddenly feel comfortable with it unless I actually DO it. i'm want to start with something like where i draw something from each book I'm reading when i'm done and can't start my next book until i do it. oh, and if the name is from LoM--favorite game of all time, 350+ hours played on that. Like twice what I have ever played on any game. So if so, I love it.

Plis--I have heard that too atually the backround on the orange is not white--it's light blue. I wonder if it's just as bad to use contrasting color though??

Flanagan--Your comment made me feel so good, originality to me is the most important, so for you to compliment me on that..it really drives me, thank you! And yes the book is a lot of work but I feel that I have learned a lot from it. I have noticed that about the faces too, even the most recnt..I am hoping it will iron itself out but I do need to try to self correct to thank you very much for your constructive comments :)

Argos-- hell yea! "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat" -W. Churchill

Well, I am not sure, but I am always trying to avoid
too light backgrounds when starting a painting, be it white
or some other color, cause it creates great contrast and make
the original colors to look much darker as they actually are.

Great portraits, but some more blending of the darker to lighter values will smooth out the shadows. Keep it up.

It sounds ridiculous but if you put an egg on a table and light it from one direction you will learn a lot about rendering, edges and light. I've done it myself many times. By really taking the time to render it you will see that some edges are almost completely "lost" or blend with the background and some are very crisp. Also you will learn a lot about reflected light.

I recommend doing it and taking your time to get it exactly the same.

Good luck and keep on working and posting as often as you can - the only way to really achieve what you want is to work harder than all the other people who want the same thing!

Thanks so much guys--it always feels really good to get encouraging comments and advice in my sketchbook.

Kendall, thank you very much.

Flan-I agree, I have really been slacking on my blending lately. Every time I shade I think "i need a blender" but keep putting off going to buy one. I have been using my finger but been afraid of losing small detail with it. . I am going to buy a really large size sketchook after christmas--fortunately next year i will have a little extra cash flow so I'm getting it for really regularly attending figure drawing classes at hipbone in portland-- and I shall pick one up then. Thank for pointing it out.

Strangedawn---thank you. I felt very comfortable drawing it but I did not pay enough attention to the picture looking proportionate. It is good that I am looking a little less at my reference, but not good if that makes it so my drawing is so off!

Thom--thank you very much man. An egg? It sounds promising. I will do it as my next still life take my time, and see what I can learn.

CA has been helping me so much and I want to thank everyone who has teken the time to help guide me so far. This picture is nothng promising at all and seems like a step backward...but it is from my imagination. I learned only a slight from it..I already see many messed up things and am thinking how to avoid it in the future. It's supposed to be Planet P from Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlen which I just finished. I'm sure theres much more interesting scenes I could have drawn from the book. But thinking back on it what stuck wtih me most was the desolate lichen+snow landscape. I guess I dont like thinking about giant spiders. Yet :P

This picture looks absolutely nothing like in my imagination. But hopefully that's something that can also improve with practice.

Now back to observational studies so I can feel good about myself again :P

I can see rapid improvement in these pages, so just keep at it. If you have the opportunity to go to art school - then by all means do so. At least to try it out (it might not be for you, and some great artists are self taught). And you wrote about being too old to change paths?! haha I was 27 when I started Design School. If you want something enough, there is no such thing as too old.

I don't have anything specific to crit you on right now - but I can say that your SB somehow makes me want to draw - and maybe even pick up the pencil again.
Keep it up!

ey all thanks for the replies. Sorry to have been away.

I am back after a long time.

Where have I gone up? Where have I gone down? Where do I still need to work on? I will be doing some more color studies.
