All these studies are from life... if things are numbered e.g. 12/12 , 5/5, 20/20 etc, they're not dates, they're entries for imaginefx daily sketch challenge :)
First did 2 tone form, most of it's terrible so I'll just post a couple. Was excellent practice and I learnt a lot about form.
570604
570606
Next did 3 tone form (these turned out a bit better - used 3 markers) -
570607
570608
570609
570612
570611
570613
Next did LINE - how can stuff be represented with line, I learnt how to use the weight of line to imply shapes...
570614
570615
570616
570617
570618
K so that's form and line so far. Next I was given a more broad range of study, to look into light, colour, composition and gesture poses. (did about 140 studies for those)
For the poses I used posemaniacs, I've done about 2000+ poses on there now, improving slowly but improving I think.
I have signed up to life drawing 2 times a week for spring term.
So some more random stuff to follow....
Saw posh spice in the Guardian, drew some poses to test my posemaniacs, used line as well to practice that.
569807
Went to West dean college for the weekend as a present, did some drawing, one is a Blake they had on the wall (copy) and another is a tapestry I drew.
569808
569809
Went to ipswich museum, drew some monkeys and a deer, trying to work the tone and use minimal lines.
569810
569811
Learning about light and value - made my cone, found a box, a golf ball and a paper roll and got busy -
569812
569813
Learning about composition, looked at some old paintings, did thumbnails in 3tone/2tone and pencil.
569814
569815
569816
569817
569818
569819
Learn about colour and light - watched Jeremy Vickery DVD.
Learnt Painter, watched Ryan DVD.
Tried to create some of Jeremy Vickery's examples he did at the end of the DVD in Painter. (I'v now done about 7 paintings, including the ones on Ryan DVD - finding it hard but getting easier)
569824
569825
569826
Got a lifesize skull, been drawing that. (done around 200 studies from life about here)
569828
Next up, thumbnail composition! I got to make my own compositions. I watched Feng Zhu and got info about value, and composition, also perspective and proportions. Here are some - did them in Painter also, I don't know how to use photoshop and cant afford it.
569835
569837
K more to come on next post, gonna start with 3 posts to be safe from crashing losing everything lol.

January 20th, 2009, 08:55 AM
K next up I have been concentrating on humans, the anatomy and the figure. There is quite a bit of posemaniacs, though I certainly won't post it all lol.
Sorry if the times aren't written down, most are 30-90sec, one is random view doing 2/3min poses each. I've done 1000s of these, lots fo 10/15sec, but ill only post a few up here.
569841
569843
569844
569845
569846
569847
569850
569852
Did some eyes, head, nude, Pieta statue drawing, and I tried a Madonna in Painter, tried out oils this time.
569864
569857
569858
569859
569860
Next I tried doing some character's completely out of my head with no ref at all, see if any of my posemaniacs practice paid off, some ok, some terrible, most very weird.
569870
569872
569873
569874
Made very VERY first 2 characters, poses and chars from my head, I used bridgeman constructive anatomy and Hogarth to check where I should place muscle though, as men are very hard I find to memorise the muscles. Women not so bad.
569875
569876
Next I tried colouring in my girl char quickly in Painter, just trying colours out really, nothing serious, bit messy I know lol.
569877
569878
569879
569880
569883
569884
One one more post up next from stuff I've been doing in the last WEEK, pretty much solely been learning how to use painter....
AlexTooth
January 20th, 2009, 09:10 AM
Ok, to learn about painting and stuff and how to use painter I tried to recreate some of my favourite paintings, they're not really all finished or anything, but more of a practice. I spent most of a day on each on, starting last friday. I've done about 10-12 painting total now, would love some tips on how to improve.
First up Vermeer - I thought it was ok, but later realised it's quite bad. Koshime kindly pointed out a blended to early and told me a little about how to tackle a painting.
569895
Next I tried a Monet, and after Koshimes advice I used NO blenders at all, infact I think I did the whole thing with one brush. Quite a liberating experience I found.
569902
Next tried Boldini portrait, didn't like how it was going to left it. Use a blender a bit on this.
569903
Next I tried a painting by Lenoir, all done with 1 brush, but I blended the face and hair a bit at the end.
569906
My mum saw me doing all this stuff and got me to paint a pic of my dad for his 60th this week, spent all of yesterday on it. Used 1 brush (except hair - used scratchboard), no blenders yet, though the brush has some blend on it already. I found the hair very difficult. Im not completely happy with it but my knowledge doesn't go any further with regards to this kind of thing. If anyone has tips on improving it i'd love to know, i've got 2 days left.
569909
K that's where I am right now. I've got a lot of Maya work to do this week, but expect regular updates. I'm going to try and look at sketchbooks and contribute as much as I have time for from now on :)

Nice story.I am thinking sometimes about these situations, but in the end you see that its meaning is to make you understand what you really want to do in your life(dont forget that we learn from mistakes)
Anyway its all about motivation.
I am glad you started a sketchbook here (and welcome to CA) and i can see your talent. Now you are going very well and you have to keep up.
You will meet times that your mood will be -0 and thats also a part to actually stabilize your main goal.
So never leave it from now on,keep up as long as you live pal
I think you will become very good soon enough.
see ya and thanks for stoping by my sketchbook :D

KingKostas - Thanks for dropping by, and kind words of encouragement, I know about the -0 mood thing oh too well, just gonna try my best!
Got some more posemaniacs, and a couple of bits of 3D for a small project I finished with a uni friend in December, I did the 3D he did the 2D. You can view it here... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jXz43BSbOSk if u fancy!

Very ambitious plan to achive. Only one year to become great artist - wow! It's to fast tempo for me I guess.. I'm giving myself several years and I think it's important to play with your knowledge.. For example after some life studies go and draw some speedpainting from mind, or choose some of weekly challenges to participate and so on. I see you have a DS. Download a free prg. Colors! to draw with it! Its so much fun. Also I think that giving up to all your favourite activities such as games is not a way. Balancing is a key. So if you like play your favourite game for short period like 1h after sketching training.
Stunning studies, great motivation and hard work in here. Your sketchbook is very inspirational thing..

Hey Serio, thanks for looking!
Yes, 1 year's ambitious I know, in reality we shall see, it's probably going to take longer, because I realise I can't cram years of acquired knowledge into 1 year... just going to try my hardest to learn and practice.
I will have a go with Colours on the DS, looks like a great thing to do when I'm out of the house, thanks for the tip :)

Thanx fer yer comments and heads up.
You seemed to have focused on all the things I haven’t lately, good line and cleanliness. Perhaps a better approach.
Working from life, good creativity
Have you gone into constructive anatomy yet? The Hogarth’s, Loomis and Bridgman’s books?
I'd say your work tips more toward roundup and cleanliness, color etc
You could balance it off with a bit more on construction.
You obviousely have construction, but it could use another wave of enhancement to keep up with the other stuff and incorporating perspective into your freehand. Line desighn can be a perspective distraction in early desighn and might make your stuff end up flat. I have queue'd myself to look for that balance between line beuty and dimentional aspect for future study. Even in life study, you could reach a photo representation of what you are looking at measuring in 2D, negative shapes and spaces, this is good but as with myself I think trying to draw form rather than appearance would be a good study for the future.
Other than that, your work is really nice, keep it going, feel free to take a whack at my work anytime.
AlexTooth

Hey thanks for comments Zaorr.
Yes I need to get into construction. lol my construction at the moment is a stick man then I add the stucture, it's often not too accurate though.
I will work through those books, thanks for the tip =)
I saw your sketchies, seems we're heading the same way!

hello Alex :)
Wow, really high goal, and a lot of work on it!
I don't feel like giving you so much critiques, since I'm on the learning road and I'm not better than you...just more confused I'd say! LOL
About your human figures, I'd suggest you to check out Loomis (easy to find for free on Google) and Bridgman.
In my experience, I needed some drawings from those books and from references/life in order to achieve my landmarks; now when I sketch it's pretty natural to draw them, but at the start I was confused about the "how and where the hell can I learn them?" :D
Good luck!

Alice - Yep thanks for loomis and bridgeman tip, I have the books but never really looked at them seriously, will deffo give that a go. Thanks for taking a look, tbh I think I'm a bit confused as well, I just figure if I try enough different stuff I'll find what I'm supposed to be doing =)
Sketchz - Cool yep seems I've been getting alot of advice on Bridgeman, will definitely get cracking and try do some more of my own characters, hopefully with a bit more flow and dynamism!
Majaiku - lol well I really don't work that hard, I should really! Me 'ol Dad says "the hardest thing about work is starting it" - so I'd suggest just get cracking, eventually you'll be awesome :)

Lot of work!
About the posemaniacs drawings, what helped me when I started drawing them was to try different approaches. For example, I found really useful to draw some without lifting the pencil, and some trying to use the less number of lines I could, using them to suggest the movement.
What gesture sketches are, is not a study of anatomy; they are a "note" to suggest what is the movement of the figure.
SO try not to get scared too much by proportions and such, but just concentrate on rendering the general movement the best you can. :)

I also love Vivi and all FF :P
You have done a lot of work with these figures and i am sure it will help you.The more you do the more confident you feel when you draw someone(specially in small size=less detail)
To step deeper in character anatomy start understanding each part of the body.Just think them as shapes
See ya and keep up :D

I have the same problem, looking at all those wonderful sketchbooks around here, and no way to be so good ^^
But I experienced that the more I force in that direction ( "The wannabe perfect", as I call it LOL), the more I get far from it.
One maybe needs the half way...I mean, half free/fun, and half conscious of the "rules" and goals. :)

Hi Alex, you mentioned you put your stuff up here so I thought it was about time I checked it out. I am the ultimate CA part time lurker after all.
I'm really impressed by the breadth and depth of the kind of stuff you've been working on, makes me think that maybe I should be spreading my net a little wider. Your digital painting is coming on really well, the one of your dad is really good - hope he appreciated it. I don't really feel I'm in a position to critique as you're more advanced than me at it, pretty impressive considering you've only been doing it a couple of months or so.
One thing about the figure drawing - I don't know what size you're doing yours but I find it's helpful every now and again to do some in a large format, rather than smaller thumbnails. It's hard when your sitting in front of a monitor using posemaniacs but if you're doing life drawing classes you'll be able to have a go there I guess.
Keep up the good work.

Majaiku Thanks for stopping by again, yeah Vivi is pretty much the best thing ever, I love being able to draw some FF fan art finally, probably going to do some more at some point!
KingKostas Yeah I know the figure studies are helping, I can tell, it's slow progress but my mark making with a pencil is a lot more confident now and I can draw stuff quicker - it's just hard to tell because the improvement is so gradual...
Alicelefay Yep kinda makes you feel small looking at other sketchbooks, but they've been doing it a long time, we will get there, I have seen your work and you're headed to the top I can tell, just need to keep it up :)) Thanks for stopping by, I'm gonna visit your sketchbook again, saw some cool stuff in it the other day!
Ming_64 Well hello there fella, lol yep, you're certainly the ultimate lurker! Yeah it's good all this practice, the figure stuff especially; I am mainly doing all this for the course, it's helping a lot - especially with characters/movement etc. Just hope I can pull something decent out the bag before the end of the year. I know what you mean by drawing in front of the comp, I do try draw ppl at home though on A3 when they're about, and yeah life drawing's gonna help. See ya Thursday!

really goooood!!
The posemaniacs poses are really in the good direction, no matter if they seems "nice to look at" or "realistic", they capture the movement really better!! Gooood work!
About the ink hatching...heh...I suppose it takes long time to master it, so don't give up ( About me, I did! LOL)
Bridgman is coming out good, those arms are really nice; me too I find more fun to study Bridgeman than Loomis, it's more "alive". Next time, if you want, try to study his lines; how he uses them to suggest movement and such.
But really, you showed a sweet improvement!

Man the one with the 3d amazed me!!! Really good work.
Nice studies in overall and i see that you need more training in faces.
I made a simple structure system that i currently use.Its not totally right but it can show you some info about how to understand some parts of the face(placement etc)
This structure varies from person to person cause of different width, height, special positioning of eyes mouth(example:A man may have his mouth closer to his nose than another one that have his mouth closer to the chin etc.)
Using this you can capture some basic properties of someone and start building the details.LOCATE-CREATE-FINISH
I hope this can offer you some help to your journey.
Keep up mate!!!!

zaorr Yeah Bridgeman is pretty cool, these dudes wer crazy in those days, really into their stuff, been looking at a lot of Hogarth and Loomis too, they sure don't make 'em like they used to!
kingkostas Thanks for checkin in dude, appreciated. Yes my head stuff kinda suxor right now, and my hands and arms are pretty gay. This is stuff I am working on! Yeah about head construction, I am learning Loomis' book on the head, it helps some, but it's always good getting different viewpoints, thanks! And about 3D stuff, should have more of that in the next months, need to give Zbrush a good go before my Master's project, sigh.. so much to learn!
So, Tuesday.
Argh, so did some life drawing tonight >.< basically, didn't get much done for a number of stupid reasons (room mixup, stupid model etc!) What I did do wasn't good, but I havn't done life drawing for 6months so I take it as first day blues or some crap, that's my excuse anyway!
Tried some heads from my new book called photographing portraits or somethin, I just got it for the pics =)

Wow, Nice 3D.
It's good to change direction once in a while to let some part of your mind rest and internalise. That is what I found with my own stuff, say you work really hard on the same thing for a week but it feels like you are stuck and it's exhasting you, then when you finally let go and do something else for a wink or two when you get back you will find stuff get's easier as long as you don't let old leads die, otherwise the whole thing was a waste. The iron should not burn out but also not be allowed to cool.
You have ton's of energy all put to good use.

Wow your figure studies and portraits are awesome, I couldn't tell if one of them was a photo first, very believeable coloring.
Are your poses imaginary or from refs/life models? Really dynamic anyway :)
I wish I had ambitions to pracice that as much as you...
Things will change tomorrow though, I'g going to a figure drawing session, wohoo! :)

How do you not have any stars yet!?
Those master studies are phenomenal, they really show how much effort and time you put into them.
As far as your sketches go, you've made huge leaps and bounds from what you have posted in your first few posts.
Keep it up, i feel really inspired now.

kingkostas - Thanks for the tip, yeah I detail too soon, before the person looks like who I am drawing - I'll try and fix this :-) forms first!
Noukah - Thanks for dropping by, nice to see you on ifx too! Well I do alot of figure studies on posemaniacs.com - also from some bridgeman books. And I am now going to life drawin twice a week, and I draw my family when they let me!
phoenicorn - Always nice seeing a familiar face. Thanks for dropping by! Well I am probably quite a bit older than you, when you're my age you would kick my arse I am sure of it!! See ya on ifx!
DeeLock - Hi, thanks for the kind words, but I really feel I am not that good yet, I do work fairly hard though, so improvement should be quite quick if I keep at it. From speaking to other artists, great artists, EVERY single one of them said it's practice and learning, nothing else, no secrets, no magical talents, it's all effort. I remember this and hopefully it will pay off one day!!
K well here's some stuff from life drawing class - much harder in real life, I think I'm getting a little bit better, slowly >.<
Some weird watercolour and pen thing, was meant to be quick and messy, and well it shows lol

One reason is so I can colour in the above image well in time for Feb 28th deadline =)) cya!

I painted it, but the original drawing was supplied. I have learnt about painting in darkness though, even though it doesn't look anywhere near as good as his!!

Drawing corpulent people is a great way to show volume and mass. I really like the drawings but I think you should try to shade more and use more curved lines (I don't know if 'curved' is the right word, I hope you know what I mean) to bring out what makes the model so interesting. Some of your life drawings look a little flat but I guess it's because of the short time. The first 40 min one is really well done!

iphigen Wow corpulent, now that's a word I have never heard before; just found out it means large 'folk. Heh, yeah infact i am used to pretty fat models but this week she was pretty huge. Yeah it's fun, like drawing a big ball. I know what you mean about the shorter sketches looking flat, 5-10min is actually quite a long time, but I draw quite big (you can't tell from the pics though) and it's hard getting in much shading - I'm still a noob really, and only just improving very recently. I'll try more volume in shorter studies, you're right as well I concentrate on lines a bit too much. Thanks for critique, it's always helpful!
engelhardt Thanks for the comment, I will take a look at yours and see how you're doing also :-) And yes drawing fast is great training for the brain/hand!
kingkostas Thank you buddy, I've been lookin' at your heads man, crazy love the improvement. And yep I'll keep beavering away, just need to keep that self-discapline - seems a constant battle to motivate myself, I think life drawing helps though, it's a nice change! I do need to do more personal work though, I keep telling myself this and never get round to it argh >.<
Noukah Thanks Noukah, yes posemaniacs is a great resource - infact I thank most of my improvement to the website. Doing lots of 10/15sec poses has improved my hands vastly, this has helped me draw in real life a lot. Highly recommended!!

Apparently the online dictionary sometimes suggests rather strange words. I just don't like saying 'fat', it sounds sort of mean to me :D
May I ask how big the drawings are?

Hey Alex, A lot of awesome things you got goin on here. I really like your gesture drawings. keep up the good work.
AlexTooth
February 8th, 2009, 05:06 PM
Kayo Thanks, the gestures are good practice, just a shame we don't do 30sec poses in life drawing. Still they're good fun on posemaniacs and help a lot.
iphigen All the pics of the large lady are on canson newsprint, weird size, about A2, couple of A2 sugar paper, some up top are even on A1. Part of the problem with some of the 5min ones is I started to detail the head and didn't even finish the whole body. I think I will draw a bit smaller for the 5min poses so I can get the body and some shading. All this life drawing is very new, like in the last 3weeks so I'm learning every session. Definitely a lot better than drawing from pictures!
If you have any tips to share I'd love to hear :) One thing I might try is block in some tone/shapes before I even do any lines!

Well, busy day, on to assignment 2 of my bobby chiu course.
Today was colouring in from black and white. The picture was supplied.
I learn about using all the layer blend modes, channels, masks, and actions. And I am sure some other stuff. This was mainly done with a colour layer and overlay layer, with extensive use of actions until I got the colour how I liked.
I actually did this exercise twice. You can see Bobby Chui's original here, if you're interested :p I prefer mine, then I would say that ^^ http://www.imaginismstudios.com/images/port/cowboys-art-painting-cowboy.jpg

Nice work!!!I like the way you textured it and be sure that as you keep working like that you will sure become better very fast.
Everyone is exited when the sketch presents the volumes in the best way.
Try to support the volumes with the rendering.Where the light is coming from, and where are the big shadows?
Block them in the sketch and make it seems 3d rather than throwing some inaccurate lines that only depict some small 3d regions.
I must thank you for encouraging me :D!!!

Wow probably lots to say but here goes.
The figures and life drawing IS getting a whole lot better. What you did with your last 10 minute ones, going over them in final lines later, is something i've often done...perhaps its a lesson in getting a very simple, accurate under drawing before commiting to it.
Have you tried your life drawings with the side of your pencil. I find it realllly helps with larger drawings and thin lines are hard to work with. The side of your pencil gets a more gestural feel and you can play with line thickness by tilting and rotating it - worth a try.
The textures you added to your digital piece work not bad being so new!
I use some layer adjustments and incorporate photos now and then, but thats usually just to get a 'base' to work from. I then try and paint over things and correct them as the original photo may not work how you want. They key is to explore all ways of doing things, and you will find what works for you. I believe I use a lot fewer adjustment layers than some other people, though does that mean I'm just not taking advantage of the digital medium enough?
When you get to some landscape stuff I'll be sure to offer some specific suggestions :)
Oh and I think for people unconfident with solid quick poses, dont ever feel bad about 90 sec ones if capturing it faster isnt working for you....I enjoy that more at this point myself.

Aaron Death Thanks for comments :-) Yes my paintings are better to look at for sure. There are lots of reasons though, they take a long time - drawings are pretty quick. I will spend longer on some drawings though when I feel I am good enough to produce something nice - good drawing is the foundation of good art for me so I want to practice it most. Digi painting well you can keep messing with it until it looks nice!
kingkostas Thanks for checking by as usual, very kind of you. I will take your advice and try harder with my shading, I love looking at good pencil sketches to I am going to try a lot harder on this from now on, cheers bud :-)
Jakers Hey man, thanks for all the advice, no I have never tried drawing with the side of my pencil, now I imagine it, it sounds like it will look very good, thank you man that's gonna help I know! Yeah that texture came out ok, but I was using a tutorial :) Ideally I would like to just paint a landscape with just brushes. Anyway I'll post some when I do them and maybe you can give me a couple of pointers! Love your sketchbook by the way. thanks again.

In the anatomy try to understand some key features of bodies. For example about legs you must learn the basic curving system(the one that forms the boundaries). For example when looking from front view, imagine the bended cylinder(knee area) always looking to the outside region of the body.Check some of my studies and i hope you will see it.Some more attention and you will have it right away :D

Damn you are really hitting those studies! Great to see all that work in your sketchbook. I gotta say though, I like where your environments are going in particular. The colors or edges or something aren't quite spot on yet, but I think you convey a really good sense of mood and space. Can't wait to see where you are with those a few months from now :).

Wow thanks for all the comments, CA rules =0 If I didn't find this site then who know's where I would be, buried in some video game no doubt :)
I'll check out all your SBs and leave some comment/advice if I can offer anything useful lol
Nim - Thank you for the encouragement, though I can't take the credit for the caricatures, they're part of a tutorial, even though I did draw them; I learnt a lot after it anyway, and hopefully I have improved since =)
Sid - Thanks for taking a look. Your comments mean a lot - yes I love environments, pity I don't have the skill yet, but trying to practice - it's mainly light I am trying to tackle, probably the hardest thing I have encountered in the 'ol art world - I will beat it one day though :) I am checking out your SB as we speak, looks good!
Blythe - Thanks! You know what I love your work, it's one of my favourite sketchbookies in here. Yeah I wanna get more into this speed painting, just to get ideas for paintings down more than anything - recommended for brainstorming!
Snootchy - You're welcome I will be sure to check in your SB for updates :) Yeah improvement is slow but sure everyday, just hard to know how to juggle the 'ol hours init?
Joce - Thanks, yeah the more I hear someone say keep at it the more determined I get, soooo far to go, but it's a fun journey.
Pijus - Thanks lol well I am a badass working when I am not having a lazy-ass day, which involved me looking at concept art or sleeping :) Draw more, get better faster though I notice!
Izer - Thanks, yeah I love FF - hopefully one day I can draw as good characters, but for now it's fun just copying them!
Chriis - Cheers mate, yeah environments I can see I will fall in love with them, whenever I start one it always turns out into some kind of fantasy-esque thing! Gonna try some more this weekend :)
Jailhouserock - No prob for the tip wish I could give more but I'm still noob! Anyway you have a seriously rockin sketchbook and I am sure I could learn a thing or two from ya!! Oh and I love your avatar lol.
Two Asix - Thanks, hopefully one day when I am good - if that day comes, people can see how I got there - and it's a nice self-journal too :)
Angry filipino - I will keep it up, promise :) hopefully more! I'm still jealous of your beach sketching skills man!! And you don't seem that angry , to me :)
Defaultee - No probs man, you're doing well, hopefully we can both improve together!
h2rra - Thanks for the encouragement matey, yeah I will keep up - eventually I want an art job, but still seems a distant dream, one day - you have crazy skills though man, I learnt alot from your thread!!
Update from last day
Some enviro I will give up with - maybe come back to one day when I am better - for now I will use photoreference to practice.

i see good improvement from the first page to the current one, i love the fact u push the s and c curve of the human body, but do becareful of distortion of proportion, when u have the time, take ur time and learn the technicality of painting digitally .
in terms of ur artistic value has indeed increase which is great, keep going at it and the end results will definitely fruitful.

Alex very very nice new work.About the face in the previous page, what makes the difference in the photo (and i am not talking about the angle) is the contrast between the light and shadow areas.Contrast make our works throw out volumes. Also try to use brush strokes with 75-100% opacity little by little as you proceed in your leveling. This will make you increase your understanding in where to put each color and such.
Just keep up anyway :D

you worked hard on the last piece here and it did come out interesting!
I think her hand is too small, it always stood out. The large eyes and head are probably intended, though its much easier to relate to a character when they more resemble correct proportions (for me anyways). There are a lot of brights and a lot of extreme darks - a more full value range can still be discovered as Kingkostas was suggesting. Some longer photo studies should help.
One thing I want you to concentrate on now is edges - use hard ones where they belong in your paintings to describe sharper form changes. Cast shadows have harder edges than volume shadows, as will outside edges. Its not to say you dont have any hard edges - though I would look over work you like and look for them as they add a lot of rendering variety and more accurately capture forms.

Very nice studies and images that you are pumping out in a really fast pace. I love that.
I think that your work on anatomy, light and colour is already paying off, but I feel that some of your images tend to be let down by composition. Try making the piece intersting by adding points of focus and keeping other parts a little more unclear. Lead the eye to the most important part of the image.
Just some random thoughts.
Cheers

kickass Bridgman studies! moar! :)
i feel youīre losing a bit of contrast when going from grayscale to colour.
the two latest paintings could use a bit darker darks and lighter lights to push the volume more. :)

Holy crap, tons of work in here. You keep working this hard, you're going to be unstoppable.
If I could offer any advice, I'd suggest really slowing down and paying attention to every line when you're doing studies. You have a lot of really gestural work, and it looks really good, but remember not to neglect the dead-on long studies too.
Of course, that Rembrandt study looks fantastic, so maybe I'm preaching to the choir. At any rate, great work; definitely keep it up!

Jatherip - Thanks ^^ Yeah - the quality of imagination stuff sucked - I was ill in bed, no pencil sharpener and a blunt pencil, and no energy to draw properly!!
Kingkostas - Thanks man, it's good to be back! I am repenting as hard as one can for their Art sins :)
jcpahl - Thanks for looking at me sketchbook^^ Always nice to have other opinions.. you know, you're right about longer studies, I've been doing some slightly longer ones, but I rarely do ones which take many hours - but that's all changing - longer studies here I come!!
I've been ill so not updated last week - anyway I was better by the weekend so here's the work since then - also Joined the Crimson Daggers! Yeah!!
Some drawings I did ill in bed. Using marker pens - never drawn in colour before, was kinda fun.

Hiya!
Latest still life has a lot of promise. The linework you did is really good work.
The painting however, is really muddy and dull. It needs to be sharpened up, the values need to be clarified and the colors need to be intensified. You should definitely start thinking about creating a focal point. Guide the viewer's eye and give them something to really marvel at and appreciate as well as giving them plenty of space to rest their eye.
Keep up the good work.

Whoa study overload! Remember to take a power nap in between the paint strokes from time to time! Great work here dude, In the latest life drawing I agree with DeeLock, try to zoom in a bit and start defining those edges and smooth stuff out and it will be even more awesome. Thanks for stopping by my SB btw.

Can't wait for that still life to be finished. Right now it looks a tad blurry so try to make it more solid.
I personally like the environment sketch and the warrior just before it. They both look quite good.
Im going to hold up on giving you stars though since I think i need a bit more material to judge. Thanks for trying to vote me up a star though, I can't wait to see more of your stuff.

Great studies mate. The lifes are very good but i also think you must make a small research on edges and some in contrast.
You already "sharpened" manualy some things but there are some key spots for example in the last life study in the cover of the pot i think there could possibly be a sharp shape hehehe.
keep up the good work

Hello King, thanks for stopping by, you're my only ever visitor, so ty^^
"what will you say if i say i like the ones from memory?" hmmm trick question? lol - I dunno I'd be happy if anyone liked something that came from my memory haha!
As for the Pot - well there's quite a bit wrong with the shape compared to the real pot, little things - but then again it's art, it doesn't need to look like a photo right! I do need to practice my drawing in digital though, as that's where the errors lay. Other than that it's practice I guess, it's just not as good as a pot by a pro^^ I probably want too much too soon heh.
Today had a family kinda trip thing to London, so I drew some bridgeman in the car, it was really shaky though, but then again it's bridgeman hehe.
Saw Anish Kapoor at the RA, little bit overrated, but then I'm not into sculptures/installation - also so gill/epstein etc in the National gallery, pretty cool - again not my interest really!

Ok its no need to look like the photo. The thing that is important is to have the same understanding of nature.Everything will improve when you will understand what is exactly what you are doing there within the single brushstroke.
I will say it is pro, will that be ok with you? no. The only thing the pros we both researching have this bonus understanding(not everyone, some of them due to work requirements use some things that are not totally based in understanding...anyway ehhhe)
A quick example of some simple thing. If you understand how and why you did this pot like that(i mean observing and doing=real elements) then i am sure you could do a helm of the same material(yes i want it to be of this material)and the light will hit it from the same angle. That means the only thing you change is shape...pfff thats nothing, its like if i told you to make the cover of the pot bigger, or put some holes through it.
Anyway :P Just keep up cause you are doing great. The last one have some really nice elements.
See ya

i haven't seen the photo but watch the highlights on the hair and the shadow under the chin. they both seem a bit too grey in color or pure white and even if you are copying a photo, it never hurts to use a little artistic license ^^
i think you could use some bigger brush strokes to get more structure in the face and then smooth them down later. also the way you approached the hair is a bit too smooth in style compared to the rest of the painting, i guess it throws it off a little - probably if you are going to have a more painterly look to the rest of the piece you should keep the hair painterly as well.

KingKostas - Yeah you're right^^ I'm just one of those people which is never really happy with anything I do - though I do enjoy everything I do and I learn a lot, maybe one day I'll truly like something - thanks for the boost! :)
Hp - Yep you're right about that shadow, looking at it now it's too grey and muddy - it's actually more of a desaturated green I think - I will definitely take onboard the painterly comments and try to get a better balance in the future, thx!!
Today a little photo study with the daggers and some study of my own - quite a lot from memory today!

Hp - Matte, yes! Those shiney things are just more tempting aren't they? I realise it's mainly practice but I'm going to try find some painting tutorials cos there's lots I can't get right>.< As for tips... lol I can't think of anything - my main problem is trying to overwork things and they get worse, so avoid that^^
Jailhouserock - Heh thanks, yeah I'm getting there, just wish I didn't take a long break, hurts thinking about it, but I learnt a good lesson - never get left behind!!
Soundpath - Thanks for the encouragement, yep a lot of studies, but maybe I should start doing some personal stuff now!
KingKostas - lol I was just writing this message as you replied, thanks for looking man - yeah the memory stuff is good tonic, I'm going to try do at least a little bit everyday!!
Pretty much finished now - flowers could use a bit more definition in places, but tbh I don't want to do much more - there are too many fundamental problems with the structure and balance of the pieces, many things that will come with me in time - especially painting technique!

Hello there Alex! :)
I really like how you improved over the last few pages, especially with your anatomy, values and digital skills!! :D:D:D You seem more confident too!!
And i think you should worry less about your break period and concentrate more on the here and now as they say. If you think of what you didn't do, you'll just get more frightened and you won't want to start, won't want to think about it.. so you'll end up doing even less than you could have :(

This morning's still life, was cool autumn sky outside, but I also used a desk lamp - too bright cos my gamma was set all wrong - hopefully ive fixed that now tho!

I read in someone elses sketchbook about contour drawing, so I'm going to do it every day now - guy said it takes 80 drawings to see a difference, well I've done 10 so far - lol god they suck ass!! If you don't know, it's never taking your pen off the paper - haven't tried blind contour drawing yet...

Sup Alex. Those studies are looking really, really good, I love the head stuff you're doing. The still lifes look great and they're starting to get a level of polish. I do recommend that you start to push more color into the shadows though. Relax your eyes and pay attention to the color temperature difference. It still looks like the shadows are largely darker versions of the color in the light, and you'll really get more life into them just by using different colors entirely. Keep it up.

This is quite the big post! :D
And you did a lot of varied stuff once more.
The contours ones are particularly my favourite, especially the plant, witch you coloured too; i think i will give them a try too..but.. don't you remember where you saw this? i would like to read that post too :)
Love your loomis and the fact that your scans are so clean!.. i really liked your other post with bridgman

Hey thanks for the replies guys, I will check out your respective progresses soon :) 5am now though hehe.
My57 Thanks man, yeah I might sharpen up them flowers a little, thx!
kingkostas Hehe, I appreciate your honesty, I wish more people were like you!! Yeah well the purple one was actually started as a photo study, added some crap, didn't help much lol - Yeah studies are good, but y'know I wanna be making my own character and enviros and stuff soon :)
Danny K - Woo, thanks for you enthusiam and energy, I've seen you post on some other SBs and you seem like a good guy that knows what he's talking about :) Appreciate the feedback!
Sidharth Chaturvedi - Hey Sid, 'been a while man - I took a massive break, back now though - I'll have to check out how you're doing!! Yes shadows I find really really hard :s Aware of the hue changes, but I find it hard to look right - mainly still lifes, photo studies are so easy in comparison - gotta master this shit one day :) Still life again tomorrow!
BlackDelphin Heya Blacky - ya the contours thing is fun, it's getting a bit better but still pretty crappy and innacurate at the moment - I'll check my progress every 10 drawing :) Thx for encouragement!
K, some update today - had to design a Panda for a friend's Karate club - never done anything like this before, I just drew some pandas to get a feel for the 'lil fellas - then I looked out some Karate poses and made some kind of panda out of it, it's not like serious or anything, she likes them so we'll make a logo out of one of the poses :)
Research - touched up the white in PS.

Well i personally think you are improving your linework already!! :D :D
Seriously! After seeing your contours from this post, and then your hogarth, especially the ones you shaded with markers, well, they have a really nice flow!!
I see you posting your work on the karate panda character for your friend :)
You did a fine job with the real life like ones, but on your character, i think you got those proportions a bit off somehow..
Your photo studies are really awesome too :)
I think the figure that is standing on that block is the most eye catching, and she has quite a nice expression!
Don't stop Alex!!! :meow:

You are doing great.Lovely pandas.Clean the choosen one in photoshop or illustrator(if its about logo works etc).Simple and ideal
Great studies and now to the last one hehehe :)
I think what misses from this work or maybe works more focused contrast in some regions(maybe more values or something to create more contrast) to pop out 3d form and other aspects. For example in some spots inside the area under the ear area or somewhere there, some inside the eye regions with depth on them(that stop any light to go)and things like that. These things can make it even more 3d because they add more depth :)
Keep up the really good work :)

Hey man.
Diggin the Hogarth and Bridgman! Also the Gandalf is very cool. Well done!
In the still life at the top of the page, the vase looks good, but the leaves/flower looks pretty bland and smudgy. Like if I had taken off my glasses.
Keep up the hard work, looking forward to seeing more!

hey long time no see. As always massive amount of studies and cool pictures in here. Especially still life stuff is incredible. I think that you could copy a picture (not all just a part of it) by other artist that you really respect to learn from it. It could help to improve your techniques. Just don't forget to mention about author. So yes good job and see you soon.

Hey thanks for the comments guys! It's always encouraging - I will get round to seeing how you're all doing, soon!
BlackDelphin Thanks, yeah I'm becoming a bit more aware of lines and such, still a long way to go, ordered a book today which I hope will help :)
hp Yeah coloured light bulbs ftw... I hope, except my desk lamp broke yesterday! :( Natural ight is a complete bastard at the moment, trying to do this still life, and can only do like 1hour a day because it's dark all the rest of the time! Think I'll use house lights until Spring arrives ><
kingkostas Aww, I don't have illustrator for the panda, that would have been a good idea, vectors and all that jazz... anyway I managed in photoshop, I hope she thinks it's ok, I have no idea, I mean never done graphics b4 in my life! I will bear in mind what you say about contrast, try and be more weary of it, I've taken all your advice so far and I won't stop now :)
jcpahl Thanks friend, just wish there were more hours in the day :s
krel Thanks for the crit on the sill life, yeah I hate the flowers, I spent like 30mins on them so far - i'll go finish them off soon!
Creusa Thank you, yes I am planning on detailing him and finishing this week, when I make some custom brushes etc.
OmertA Thanks man, yeah contours is helping but it's slow progress, done 20 now and small improvement ^^
Danny_K Yeah it is!! More from that film to come :)
Benjie Thanks for you comment man, I hope to blow some shit up next year or so, gotta keep at it!
serio Nice to hear from you again mate - yeah you're right about the Master Studies, I'm planning on starting one tomorrow, just need to decide an Artist!
Huey Yeng Thanks again for advice, trust me I take every crit on board, I even remember ones from when I started a year ago! and will make an effort to keep things sharp in places, again it's all practice deciding what to keep loose and sharp!
Update today - can't be arsed to explain em all, but there's a still life WIP, Bridgeman, Hogarth and Contour Drawings 16-21, oh and my panda ideas - she wanted it maybe for tshirts too so I tried it out a little bit.

Those Bridgman studies look really hot, and that life painting is excellent. The life drawings are good, but I think that you might be doing them too fast. I'd say that if you really slow down and measure, and analyze the negative shapes to make sure the positive shapes are right, and just really strive for dead-on accuracy, they'll pay off more for you than quick sketches.

December 3rd, 2009, 09:26 AM
niiiiice, lots of studies tons of motivation gut gut gut! The still life seems a bit muted to me colors of the overall painting seem on the cold side, was it a cloudy day? there is a little problem with the perspective on the table and the cap of the tea holder, also try adding more color variety to the table map and the pepper, remember that everything in our world has many many range of colors in them though we usually don't see them all but they are there trust me! if you observe really closely.

KingKostas Thanks man - yeah some bits and pieces are off in those studies, I decided to bite the bullet and start in pen rather than pencil, purely as it's much quicker than going over lines - hence some mistakes^^ Yeah she wants all the t-shirts pink! .. girls :s
Hi, thx for crit- though I'm not sure which life drawings you're referring too? If it's the contour ones, then I can't take my hand off paper>< so no measuring etc, it's a good quick exercise to train the hand. Otherwise - I'll try do more longer studies as well :)
Danny K Thanks matey - yes it's always a cold miserable day here at the moment, infact I had to quit that life study as some days it didnt even get light >.< Nice warm artificial light ones only now til Spring!
Natzuur JK Yes you're right!! More imagination stuff is needed, I really wanted to get some good drawing skills and anatomy first, but yes I'll do more memory stuff from now on, thx :)
Blackdelphin Well, thanks for the encouragement Blacky :) I'll try and keep the pace, when I'm not ill><

Bit of a random update today, haven't really done much this last few days - I was making brushes out of ink and paper, paints, airbrushing etc, scanning photos, editing, making textures, dual brushes etc, took me over a day. But now I have my own set I can call completely unique to me and use forever!

some thing bothers me in her face it might be the eyes too big, try to resize them and see how it looks, also try to block her right eye and notice how the face looks a lot better, I think you should move her right eye a bit to the left closer to the nose and.
Also try to darker the tones in the dark areas especially in the cloth it's abit dull looking to me, will give you a better tonal value variation.
Good progress mate, Cheers.

Contour drawings, running out of things to draw in the house, resorted to finding toys from upstairs :s I need more props!

Some arm stuff, still practicing drawing straight with pen so it's not all accurate. Can't be arsed with underlying pencil sketch anymore, life's too short!

Hi Alex! Alex here :) Great stuff in the latest post, I think it's important to know bone structure and stuff so you don't just do a detail because it's on all your reference images, but you know why it is there. This last environment is looking good! Looks like you are starting to get the hang of your new brushes!
If you hate faces cuz they are hard, you know what you have to do! :)
keep up the good work!

Hey nice updates Alex, It's inspirational seeing all of these studies, they are looking good. I like that painting of the woman, with the loose clothing, that came out well. Only crit i have is that it looks flat in some areas. I think you could have pushed the contrast a little bit more. Some sharper shadows and highlights in the folds of the fabric, armpit area, face, etc, would have made it stand out more.

I know how much motivation a comment like that can bring some time, if not a t least a smile so i give my best when commenting, take it seriously and don't hold back :D
I think you'll really post some intriguing drawings with those custom brushes of yours real soon, but so far i see you making really interesting colour combinations.
Your 30th and 31st contours are really nice, and i like seeing you approaching different more complicated angles. I should make a few today too. I haven't done them in a couple of days already!~
And as always, creative, nice loomis figures. Perhaps try and do some maniacs in that style too?
This one: http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr16/AlexTooth/Sargeant4.jpg really captured my attention through its mood and idea..i really hope to see you add more highlights and detailing it!
And on your last photo study i can see you starting to blend those textures of yours, but instead you neglected the edges, especially where those rays are coming from. But i guess if it weren't a speedie, you would have corrected that.
You're one of the hardest working artist i saw around here so i added you to my sig. So i'd better see you keep this up!! :meow:
Take care and see you soon!!

Oi there, fellow daggerer. One fine sketchbook you have here.
Those Sargents are looking sweet. Nice textury feel. Maybe some more definition needed on edges though. Loomis studies are looking good too.
Damn, you work so hard you're making the rest of us feel like bunch of lazy ass procrastinators. Keep it up. :)

Great. Reduce the blackness because it makes them little muddy :)
You need more sharp areas in the enviros(for example maybe in the water part where the sun rays are reflected.Actually you have more detail there but need to be a little more crisp
keep up the good work :)
