Last pages has the latest work.. but I think you knew that!
.. And one figure done from life in charcoal pencil on smooth newsprint. My sketchbook is mostly a travel companion ( planes, places, etc.,) but I find it a solid way to continue developing my eye/hand when I can't draw or paint from life. All here are ballpoint pen - the cheap crap-ish kind ( which i like).. Some are copies of other artists I admire, some are from photos, some are from life.. I am just through two years of fine art and some illustration at the Academy of ARt in SF and now in my last months of a 9 month class with Anthony "Tony" Ryder in Santa FE. I have been studying the figure and drawing and painting people for three years now and that was the beginning of this journey for me.. I am kind of obsessed.. long way to go.. lots to learn.. I see lots of fantastic work here and figured it was time to dip a leg/foot/toe in..
Updated 9/9/11 - I am now teaching drawing classes at the Academy of ARt University in San Francisco. Stop on in if you come visit the school!
Cheers,
Kevin

Super good man!
I love that Fechin painting you made a study from. I would have loved to see how you had tackled the hands from that painting, as those are my favourite part. Very nice though, and extra points for using ballpoint. The life drawing is also very strong, great contour lines
Welcome btw, hope to see more soon

Wow, the level of contrast you have in the shading really good, and subtle application of cross-hatching. Along with other forms of shading techniques, that puts my pencil studies to shame.
By the way any stuff in other materials, like watercolour, oil, paint, ink, etc, in the pipeline for being uploaded? Anyway I'm subscribing.

LOVE the Ballpoint pen! Really like the style/approach as well. Really enjoyed seeing this (and I love hearing people talk about carrying their sketchbooks and drawing where ever they can - awesome!) They are like a diary - you can almost always tell a story or know where you were when you drew something.
Looking forward to seeing more!

Hi Kevin,
You have a nice consistency to your work and your progress so far. I can see the range in your education at AAU - clothed figure, head and hands, Zhaoming Wu and Henry Yan. You're exposure there will no doubt aid you in your path. When I was there I felt a bit confused from all the approaches and different types of figure drawing. I'm glad now that I have the background - I can push different aspects of the figure and use things from Clothed Figure, or Barbara's classes that were so unique to AAU. Glenn helped me focus and edit out to achieve a drawing that was styled well - and that was eventually mine, though I copied and copied a lot while I was there. The Riley method is taught, though it isn't adhered to. Each pose offers up a new challenge in how to solve it - like a puzzle.
For me - I was able to gain quite a bit of skill level with Glenn because I had so much info already from people like Henry and Zhaoming. Glenn has the ability to make it VERY clear how to break down and simplify the figure using a number of blended methods. If you can spend the summer with him, you'll no doubt be able to make some major skill level jumps. Especially in constructing the head - which will affect your painting.
Before I studied with Glenn I could not for the life of me paint the figure, and that was less than 2 years ago. If you can't draw it - you for sure can't paint it.
While I was there I felt a real connection to the past and the lineage of figure drawing. Very humbling experience.
Sorry for rambling on, hope this helps.
Keep working hard
-Hope

Glenn teaches 2 Tuesday classes back to back. I believe they're 2-5 & 7-10. If you enroll in 3 classes you get the 4th free (that's what they offered in 2007). Ryan Wurmser and Tony Pro teach painting on Wed or Thurs I think, the schedule may change. Always confirm the schedule! Stick with them and you'll do great. Mark Schwartz is great too, he studies with Glenn and teaches the Monday and Saturday class and workshop.

such gorgeous oils. ;_;
how often do you go to workshops/life drawing sessions?
Blue Severin
February 28th, 2009, 02:47 AM
Nice oils, the man's face is especially nice. In the digital study, some of your hard edges and muted colors are lost from the oils. Balancing the blurry look with some hard lines, and the blown out saturated colors with some nice greys would make the digital look sweet. Heh but takes a bit to get used too.
kevinwueste
February 28th, 2009, 10:07 AM
a la babsi: I go to workshops several times a week for painting and drawing.. if I can do one or the other every day I am happy.
Blue Severin - agree w/the edge control non-management in the digital painting.. the thing that drew me to the image was that it is super saturated and I kept to that.. but aesthetically - I hear you completely! - kw

Thank you !!! - Diverse, Josef, Marlisa,G@m..
Mydrako - never give up on the things that matter! as to contour lines - I sometimes draw directly with no block in but mostly i quickly find the shapes and some reference points and go.. for finer, longer work, I block in very carefully ( not any of that is visible here except maybe some early portraits in charcoal/toned paper)..
AztecFF - thank you - and thanks for all the information - I learn from your work!
Thanks KrossJ !
Frank - palette ? well typically it's titanium white, naples yellow light, cad yellow light, yellow ochre, terra rosa, cad red light, transparent red oxide, aliz crimson, burnt umber, olive green, green earth hue, cerulean blue and ultramarine. sometimes I will add a magenta or diox purple if needed..
-cheers all thanks again for kind words and commentary!

March 16th, 2009, 03:53 PM
all quick studies most less than an hour .. a few just a bit more.. on canvas panel, birch board and Masonite.. cityscapes are the inner sunset in San Francisco.. still lifes from school.. and up-lit Sen., John McCain from.. well.. from his campaign that didn't turn out so well.

I really enjoyed looking through here. Your figure work is really sensitive, flowing, and with really good solidity as well. Your quick figural paintings are well done too and that's a tough discipline!
Looking forward to seeing where you take this quality level you've got going on.

Thanks for the comment Kevin, I do see what your saying... when I really start from the basics the drawing turns out 250% better. Perhaps I'm a little afraid of working this way when I'm out and about drawing, because they could move at any time! Like what was said I am focusing more on there features it's a comfort zone, ill try breaking it =)

a few new paintings - a longer two class pose ( gregory) from clothed figure class and two quick studies the more paint-blob-ish one is 25 minutes and the woman from the .. back ? - is 45 mins or so.. both of those were part of an "extreme color" approach.. so things are a bit pushed.. but the results ? well I think ok.. still have a lot about color harmony to figure out!!!
thanks everyone for your kind words!!

Hey Kevin,
Great drawings here man!
About Max's books... there are 3 total that i own. the first one is called "Faces" and was published probably at least 7-8 years ago. i looked high and low for it and eventually had to look online. i found my copy at alibris.com
his second book is called "faces and figures" (i think-- i'm not at home near my books right now). i actually bought that from Max himself in a parking lot--we've met by accident a couple of times. you might still be able to get a copy of that one around town. the print quality is not that good in a few spots, but to make up for that there are a lot of pictures of his sculptures and terracottas. they're phenomenal.
all of the books were originally selling for 20$ each, but who knows what people will ask for them if they're out of print.
your best bet really is to contact him directly. since you know Orbik, ask him for Max's home number and call him. (Max teaches on Monday or Tuesday mornings at CAI.) Max may have some extra copies stashed around his home. if you hit it off with him, try to find a way to stop by his house and see some of the originals.

Hey thanks for dropping by my sketchbook. Unfortunately no I'm not in AAU, too poor to afford art school. But good eye, I'm glad that you recognized Isabel. She definitely is one of my favorite models from figure drawing. She came into our painting class at ccsf on our last day of class. So here comes the barrage of questions:
-For oils are you using mostly flat brushes? (so far that is all I got).
-As for your gorgeous charcoal studies, along side with charcoal pencil for the general shading do you use a stick of vine or compress? Or is it all just charcoal pencil?
-Would you think working with a limited pallette be more helpful?
Keep up the awesome works and thanks for your time.
-Frank

i never thought i would utter the words "thank you hell" but thank you ( hellart!)
Thanks for the info Chris ! I'll get up my nerve and ring him up and see what the deal is.. keep up the beautiful work !
E - thanks.. oh.. so MUCH to learn about painting ( and drawing..)
BigJoee - those photos are in his "How I make a Picture" book - and they are very small but good little black and whites .. i just held the book open next to me at my drafting table and.. drew!
Frank - always say super nice things - thank you .. i will be checking your stuff next! yes, ahem.. I even had to do some reduction because .. well .. I'm a guy and a moron.. they're all just forms right ? right ?
Jmonster - hah! yes I'll maybe give that a shot.. I am mostly focused on figure/life drawing and painting but this IS concept art right ? I will take the challenge and see how wrong it all goes!
Frank: I painted Isabel today at AAU with Henry Yan.. I showed her your painting - she was jazzed to see it..
Oil Brushes: yes - especially with allaprima paintings as you can get plains built more quickly that way than with filberts or rounds; but with longer, more careful paintings I will use more rounds and filberts and my eggbert!
Almost 99% of the charcoal work you see here is charcoal pencil. wolff's carbon or conte noire black ( 4b, 4b and 2b respectively).. I like vine and big chunks and compressed but don't use them unless I'm drawing on good paper where softer is good-er..
Porg - thanks so much!!!!!!!
A Limited palette is absolutely an excellent way when you are starting out.. there are so many ways to skin the cat but if you had: Titanium White ( or Flake White), Cad Yellow LIght, Yellow Ochre, Cad Red LIght and Burnt Umber you can make a beautiful painting with forms and values and darks and lights.. add a blue like ultramarine or cerulean and a green like terra verdi ( green earth hue from utrecth) and/or Olive green to expand that palette..

Oh it's Isabel!! Your Isabel's are on a whole other level compared to the one I did. I appreciate the subtle and delicate treatment you done on the skin. Thank you so much for the advice. Anyways, happy first Wednesday of the month. (aka free zoo/museums day). Take care.

i remember those...so honored to see all the awesomeness in person, so motivated. You're an inspiration to me.
My main lazy plan of the week didn't go through..wanted to go to the zoo for my first time and to do some sketching, but the place was SO crowded i had to go another day :( Finished reading a good book last night, and now, especially after seeing this, i must draw! Thank you S'ire Kevin!

I absolutely love your handling of color in your nude paintings. As well as your treatment of the background. I am assuming that they are done in oil?

Hey all! Thank your for the good thoughts and feedback - it means a lot .. this is a great community and I hope it is useful to see this stuff ( as it is so useful to me to see folks solving their problems as well!!)..
Laylo-Dred - yes all oils here except when noted ( the only other things in color i can think of are colored pencil or painter but those are pretty obvious..
Calyx - you will have a great time w/Tomutsu in the fall. .I want to come paint with you :ilaekae::ilaekae: hope you like these new studies ( if not, you can break it to me gently !!???)
Android, well.. they are ok.. both are oils on canva-paper.. lots to fix.. but learning is good!
below - some charcoal pencil head studies.. from photo refs.. about 1-3 hours each depending ( hair takes me forever).. trying not to overwork..
doing some Rockwell studies recently helped me with these ( these are mediocre photos but fun subjects..
