View Full Version : DSG 1447: Environment • HUGE DEAD TREES OF 'GHOST' FOREST IN THE DRY DUSTY HAZE
William b. Hand

.
[ I use the word "GHOST" -- not literally -- but, rather, in the same sense that one refers to a "Ghost Town". ]
[ Focus on communicating a sense of depth using atmospheric perspective, heightened by the haze. ]
[ ATMOSPHERIC PERSPECTIVE (http://studiochalkboard.evansville.edu/ap-aerial.html) ]
[ Beyond whatever discoveries you might make whilst using atmosphere, the fun of the image will be in the look of your trees... ]
[ Although they need to look quite dead, the trunks and branches can have any sort of look that seems interesting to you. ]
[ Include a tiny human figure or two somewhere in the image to give a sense of scale, but keep them minimal. ]

Here's mine. This is my first environment... It was also my first time starting a drawing without a sketch.
FerrousJack: nice job! I really the angle and the trees in the background.

i actually didn't read that much of the first post, so its kinda different to what's been asked (which actually sounds quite fun) so i can redo this, but i thought id post it anyways. really this was an experiment with render techniques, ive made a brush that i really like and its been interesting to work with =)

Pheuronskeurts- Dang that looks awesome. I love the style
xisco cabrer - I really like the direction of the trees, as if they're all looking in on the person
Denzo - Excellent. Great use of colors to differentiate the foreground middle and back without simply adding more haze. Lovin the whole thing.
Tommoy - I really like the perspective on this one, and the little red eye give it a nice creepy feeling. The mist has a nice ambiance too.
Peg - I really like the shape of your trees. Somehow hardwoods just look meaner than evergreens. I'm also a fan of your chunky brush strokes.
j.s. sabastian - I'm a little confused as to what's happening in the foreground, but I dig the trees and the humanoid character.
PJB21 - To be honest the brush strokes make my eyes hurt. It's like I'm trying to focus my eyes but can't achieve correction. I do like the underlying sciene though, and the little boat gives a nice sense of scale.
kawaookami - Doesn't feel very ghostly to me, maybe it's the colors or lighting I don't know, but I do like the use of colors and texture to give it a nice rendered feeling.
FerrousJack- very mean and dead looking. It definitely achieves the goal of the dsg.
Sen Holiday - simple yet effective. Bravo
Hamsta - this is exactly what came to my mind when I thought of the subject to begin with.

Mitze: I really like the details and the lighting on the trees and entire atmosphere and colors used. Would of love to see more details surrounding the tree though. :)
Anthis: Very nice I love the fog, and the dead trees, very spooky.
HexKrak: Nice angel. I love the idea, But it looks like he's standing in a swamp. lol
xisco cabrer: Hey that reminds me of mortal combat. Good job keep doing these you'll get much better before you know it.
Denzo: I love this one. very great concept. It looks like an alien ship has crashed and blew up the entire area and a lone person is going to check out the site.
Tommoy: Yours is very eye catching, simple but works greats. I like the angels as well. I would of love to see you do something more with the sky.
Peg: Great use of color, and lighting. I love how you trees looks very spooky.
j.s. sabastian: Interesting work, I like the idea but it would of been much better if you it was zoom out more and you get to see the environment he was in.
PJB21: good beginning. I like the perspective. Would of like to see more colors and detail though :) lol its all good, practice makes perfect ^_^

Hamorhage I like your stuff, it reminds me of the "the witcher" loading screens.
Anyway heres my first picture, used my scanner for the first time, used my wacom to finish something for the first time. I see a lot of wrongs with it, and halfway through I screwed it up really bad (shadows, colours, mess) but for "tracing my growth in drawing's" sake I hereby present to you!

My first time ever doing an environment and displaying it publicly on a highly-viewed thread.
I'm trying to learn as much as possible from everyone and broaden my mind a bit. By that I mean not being the perfectionist and just letting my hand do the talking sometimes.
Ah, well, here goes!

Just commenting on some of the later posted items:
Rhonin: Keep at it buddy, as long as you learn with every drawing, you're getting something out of it. I like taht the small character is sitting on the root, makes it more interactive.
I would desaturate the color of the blue sky and get rid of that sun. You don't ever really see the sun as a yellow ball in the sky.
Mephisto: Its always cool to play with texture brushes, I know I should do that more. Since you only drew one tree there's not much sense of scale and you should've made the earth more defined aswell to create a foreground .
erniesthings: I think the shadows are too hard, with low light like this the shadows are much softer. Aswell if the ture would be haning, the rope would need to be straighter unless it's a bendable metal (whic wouldnt make sense :D)
ciicru: wow! How do you do paintings like this? DO you layer your composition or work on top of your work in one layer?

HexKrak You should be able to recognize that you have a long way to go to be recognized as great, but every journey starts with a step, right?
Taking a few steps back might help put you on a faster track towards your goals as an artist - I think you need to abandon the computer and color for a while, take a pencil or charcoal and draw from life.
As far as this particular image goes, I think you should have started with the forest, before getting to the trees - blocking in areas of color, making sure the composition works, and progressing toward the small detail work.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one... I loved the topic idea, and like any chance to use heavy atmospheric perspective, but that doesn't mean I'm any good at it. Overall the image isn't as ominous as I would've liked. Should've looked at more reference, I imagine. I especially wasn't sure how to handle the tree in the foreground....
