ROUND #144 :: The Siamese Twins
DESCRIPTION
It's year 55 P.A. - Post apocalypse. The nuclear war, and the devastation it caused afterward, led to a huge increase in the number of abnormal births - at least in those populations that survived. In the pockets of the planet that are still relatively untouched, civilization is trying to find a fledgling grip on itself again.
Outside those, however, is chaos.
The Siamese twins are rarely known as anything else. Cold and rational, these two not-so-individuals have learned to survive in a world set almost entirely against them.
Working as "protectionists" for those who wish to cross the wild, they are part mercenary, part guide, part shaman, part extortionist.
Notes on this round:
-the twins can be either male or female, but they should both be the same gender
-post apocalyptic, but the amount of technology they have available is entirely up to you

Do they have to be identical twins?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conjoined_twins
Conjoined / siamese twins are identical as they come from the same egg that has started to split into ywo seperate embryo's but don't sepereate completely
RosemaryDarling
January 19th, 2009, 07:39 AM
The name comes from...
"Perhaps the most famous pair of conjoined twins was Chang and Eng Bunker (1811–1874), Thai brothers born in Siam, now Thailand. They traveled with P.T. Barnum's circus for many years and were billed as the Siamese Twins. Chang and Eng were joined by a band of flesh, cartilage, and their fused livers at the torso. In modern times, they could have been easily separated.[3] Due to the brothers' fame and the rarity of the condition, the term came to be used as a synonym for conjoined twins."

My first original idea was, to make them as like they're carrying one another (in order to survive + thats very creative use of time and powers and so on)...the one lives in the day, the other sleeps - by night the opposite ... so they would be like the dark one and the light one , ala Yin and yang ... so at one and in the same time absolutely different..... but itsa frustrating way to live... even in post apocalyptic manner ...
....so i'll go with the hoookers, hahah

daestwen
January 19th, 2009, 09:19 AM
carnifex, the brief does state that there are a lot of genetic anomalies, so i'll allow mutation, as long as it's within reason. :P They should still look like they were supposed to be human, though.

Doodledoodle. I only have a faint idea what this is going to be. One of the guy's face is covered by a gun of sorts (because the other makes the eating part), which he operates with his jaw.
I just thought I will not start at the last minute, so people can tell their opinion about what I'm doing. This place is for that, right?
I have a twin brother, although we are not siamese (at least the last time I've checked) :)

Some ideas about the drawings on the 2nd page:
Carnifex: I like the thumbnails, the insect-looking in the 2nd row from top is the best in my opinion.
Grenogs: I think it would be cooler if these siamese twins manage to still look like they are not that crippled, and yours looks pretty crooked. Imagine in a postapocalypic world how could this thingy survive? I also don't understand what he stands on. Only 1 hand? He would fall in a second.
Nickykcin: Her hands are small. There are some nice details on it.
grenogs
January 19th, 2009, 03:47 PM
hungryan their not crippled, but they are deformed from radiation, and as for survival? you only have to look at nature, there are some strange looking creatures that seem to live and fuction against all the odd, perfect example is the bumble bee, how can that creature fly? and yet it does,. OR Sulphurous smoke stacks deep in the oceans, they hit temperature of 1000 c' , and yet theres creature living around them, until recently that was concidered impossible.
Where theres a will, theres a way. :)

January 20th, 2009, 10:03 AM
Hey everyone, thanks for the comments and feedback. I know what you mean about the legs. It would seem awkward for him/them to move forward having his legs pointing in opposite directions. So I guess he would move more like a crab, sideways. Or he could move his left leg forward and backtrack with right leg. Not too fast though.

So here's a rough sketch i did , no refs , built them as i was drawing. And i just saw that more opted for the back attachment, so ill be making him up along the way ,it's not the final idea.
They are in the middle of the battle , defending from some wild animals , in this shot the big guy managed to take down a wild beast and he is moving in for the final move with his self made sword, the little guy attached to the back ( if i knew earlier that there are going to be so many ideas with the attached by back .... eh) is the brains and the sharp eye of the duo, he repairs his weapons and negotiates the jobs ( nice story eh? ^^).

mj alcazar - that's very interesting,it looks like those middle-age illustrations, maybe you can work that aspect up even more? really like it. (p.s. wouldn't it make more sense to have the second twin have the shield on her arm?)

well,i'm on the back idea too,i mean, insectoid is nice, but i somehow really like the look of it...the second twin looming over the first...

Just wanted to drop my little idea here... Definitely not gonna finish it, I've already spent way to much time on it.
I thought maybe on of the twins didn't evolve that much physically (it's still stuck somewere at an embryo/baby state), but more mentally. In the description it says that they're shamans. Well... mutant powers or whatever, you can see him casting some little spell there just for fun.
The other one is just your normal siamese, showing his secret ID card to someone is this super secret building... yeah... whatever... :nohope: seems to be a pretty lame idea to me now that I'm writing this, but what the heck, I'm frustrated because of all the stuff I still have to do for Uni.

sooo....both of my guys are mutated...one kind of has a hump....but other than that he's fine...and the other is pretty much a cripple because he's smaller than the other due to getting less nutrients....and the radiation didn't help. Hopefully it's not too much

MJ_Alcazar Your skills are improving at an incredible rate. I was constantly hanging around chow a few months ago and I thought I was impressed with you then, but you just keep getting better, keep it up! I love all the little pouches and stuff, they look very prepared for wasteland survival, and the creepy mutant dog is the icing on the cake, haha!
FerrousJack I'm loving the Pirate/Rogue thing you got going on, I'm just trying to figure out how they would walk... I'm guessing that they're both swiveling to look back at the 'camera.' Just thought I should mention that it looks (at this point) like the shared leg is fused in the front--meaning they would have to walk around like a tripod. Otherwise it's coming along nicely
Grandmassa That is so badass, can't think of anything else to say.
Lots of other good entries coming along. I'm sure this chows gonna have a lot of great entries.
So I've been lurking for a few months, dropped out of the 'of the week' world a while ago, doodled on a few chows without posting anything cause I knew I'd never finish. I've been working too much, heh. But I'm really psyched about this topic and I'm really hoping I can take this one to completion. Just finished Fallout 3 so I'm digging the post-apoc thing right now. Here's some loose doodles, trying to get my physical concept in mind before I start on accessorizing, this topic is really forcing the anatomy-stretching.
Anyway, without further ado, my doodle-concept.
for the main body I'm going for a gorilla-esque anatomy, and there's kind of a master-blaster thing going on here too. the brains and the brawn, all that.
Sorry for the poor picture quality, no scanner at the moment.

Zimfin: that skin looks REAL. But where are their conjoined balls? :teeth: The crotch is defenately short. Otherwise great.
Lol! Yeah, since posting this I have increased the crotch area and it looks a lot better now.
Sony: The missing Knee cap was done on purpose to try and show some deformity and joining of the legs and as a result, the leg looks very straight. I am not entirely happy with it yet though and will probably alter it. As long as I haven't painted a part to the same level as the face, I am prepared to change it. I am not sure which bone you were referring to though. Thanks for pointing these things out!

I really wanted to emphasize the tourist guide aspect, so I added some tourist, then an entire story popped in my head and now it's so busy I obscured one of the twins. It should floss a bit more when I get into color.
The thing I'm most proud of is I think this concept would work in a low budget film.

Adi - seems like a crazy concept. Very mangaish. Cool lines, too.
FerrousJack - I like their poses, they're dynamic and fun, but they get a little lost in the color WIP. I hope the fleshing-out will capture them well.
Nightblue - very interesting character(s) concept. Waiting to see where you go with it.
zimfin - Cool rendering style so far =) These guys could be awesme.
JOHNGRELLO - wonderful approach. The crouching twin's expression is great.
Haven't done CHOW in a long time....here's a start.

Raoul: I really like your style! It is a bit busy right now, and the midget kind of got lost in front of those rocks. I love how your line work and black/white contrast convey so much rhythm and energy.
FerrousJack : Nice colors, and the clean coloring style is very pleasant to the eye. It kind of reminds me of the oil paintings of a Hispanic artist (can't remember the name though).
natedogier: the asymmetrical shoulders look very believable, and I totally dig the bruiser + shaman design.
JOHNGRELLO: I'm very jealous of your sketching skills. Your lines and characters are pure eye candy.
Must sleep or I won't be going to work tomorrow... did a little work on mine but not much. Hope to finish it before weekend.

This is my last post before the final. Only got a few things to finish up. I figured, since they are not gonna be particularly fast on their feet I would replace one of the twins swords with a nice, meaty looking gun. Now they can cover each others backs! tim: moving the sign is definitely a good move, since the camera appears to be a couple floors above the ground, and that sign has to be pretty damn high to go all the way up there. Right now, however, the sign is still a bit distracting to me, and I'm not digging it as the focal point of the picture - the robot in the back is much, much cooler :) Have you tried just using general rubble with bigger masses and less details in the foreground? Just my 2 cents.

peppi i really like you design because of the simplicity and the fact that right now they cant see. I would keep this and play off it. it adds that nice sense of monstrosity in a post apocalyptic sort of way. imagine this thing walking up over the hill and entering a new village, the people there would freak right out. well done i hope you finish it up. may i suggest some scars from hardship, like hes had to vend off people and animals who wish to end his existence. Also making the colors a bit more vibrant. i always start muted then beef up the colors later. turning the sign around will add more of the "nuclear holocaust" feel to it. you can also be a bit witty with it too.
good luck with it.

I haven't even looked at the deadline, now I wonder if I can finish and people started posted finished work already...
Delmar: Very good and painterly, I think you can add a bit more in the foreground, also perhaps a worshipper for scale? Right now it looks like it could be pushed more.
Agnostes: Color or b&W that piece has promise, composition is good, definitely looks post apocalyptic, love the gun silhouette.
Grandmassa: Don't care for the twins so much but adding the girl really improved the piece, makes the viewer double take to make sense of the complete scene. Also looks kinda noble, screaming "my monster!"
Shardana: Nice 2c, very nice!
Peppi: That's a wicked concept stage, loved the sketches on the previous page, you seem to have picked up the same one I would have! Can't wait to see more.
Anamirela: That's a great character, however I really beg you to consider if it's really finished. You can darken up the whole piece significantly and work the spotlight more cleveryly, bring up the values and really make this character stand out, I'm almost reconsidering doing a paintover because the composition would play so good. Love the characters in the back.
Blueman: That just looks like an evil baby head on her shoulder. Lighting and idea is fine but the twins concept is not shining through.
FerrousJack: Shame on you, I really hope you're very much ashamed of yourself. Take that!

Awesome work you guys have cooked up! Thought I would comment a little bit on them. :yayca:
mrpank - Great start! I really like how big and bulky they look. Like a refrigerator moving around.
Raoul Duke - Nice use of colours. I like the small donisaurs. :P
JOHNGRELLO - Awesome piece, I don't know what other to say then I want to see it finished.
arngrimur - Wow, that's two really freaky siamese twins. But for the moment I'm afraid I can't see how they can be mercenaries/protectors/andtherest - you probably have it all figured out though.
GiantRibot - Great pose and sketch, now I wan't to see you finish it. ;)
dariocoelho - Totally love the concept, kinda reminds me of a mix between Oblivion anf Fallout 3 - something Bethseda would have cooked up.
Grandmassa Mr. Spect - Awesome! Freaking love it so far, great touch by adding the american flag in the bg. I really like the gritty look of it. :D Just one thing, the child looks a bit too much like an adult in the face, maybe you can fix it up.
Djinn - Hehe, looks like a knight on his horse. Don't know what else to say then I would like to see more.
Delmar - Great colours and feel in it. The environment and the colours in it fits the piece perfectly. :D
shardana - A bit "Dead Space" feel over it. The conjointion (is that a real word?) looks a bit too alien and foregin to be human imo.
Wiggers - Nice running pose, very dynamic and fits their body structure a lot. Looking forward seeing more.
Nickykcin - Pretty nice, good use of colours and pretty good painting aswell. Maybe you should define a lightsource, because now it looks like they're being lit up by all around the dark forest.
peppi - One of my favs so far, loving the Silent Hill creepy feel all over it.
Artofinca - Cool start!
navarrot - Scary, nice style.
hungryan - Cool idea with that mouth-mounted gun, hope you finish it.
An update on my guys. Gonna try and give him some WW2 or WW1 pistol/revolver in his holster, place a dead hare hanging in a string beside the book and then I just need to have some old Commodore 64 game running on the screen - but since I have never had a Commodore I am a bit lost here :(, thought maybe Monkey Island. Any suggestions of games you guys could give me would help a lot! :D

There are so many interesting and well done pieces here. I'd love to leave adoring comments.. but I'm so freaking tired... BUT! Here's what I've got.

I don't think it's as obvious as I would have liked but, in case you can't tell, this dood is at least 16 feet tall- Give or take. He also gets his clothes from the junkyard. :D
Also, when the large one is feeling sassy, he can waggle the Nub-Man like an amputated.. nub.
That's only for lulz and to make him spill his tea, though.

mr. spect you need to make the little girl 2x bigger. If the twins are meant to be that big, focus on the skeleton and research giagantsizm.
give the little girl more emotional dependence on the tour guide(s). Even the twins could use more emotion. arrogance, anger, fear, confidence, etc.

...consider if it's really finished. You can darken up the whole piece significantly and work the spotlight more cleveryly, bring up the values and really make this character stand out, I'm almost reconsidering doing a paintover...
Thanks for the advice n1va I'll see what I can do!

Loving the creepyness level and hard work put into every piece in this thread.
I blocked this in last evening. Started adding detail this morning. It has miles to go. At the same time, I got caught up making an enviro for EOW, so it will be a miracle if I finish either by the deadline.

Flipnastywebby - cheers for those tips. Blindness is a cool idea, it does seem to work best on these guys. My colors always tend to be a bit desaturated, I'm going to work on those some more once everything else is in place. Scars are on my list as well :)

Chate Noire: Love your rendering... very smooth. The whole idea was just that... not knowing if they are... being different isn't easy and wearing a big sign that says I'm a MUTANT doesn't seem fun. I really did wanna add a bunch of details like straps and gear and tid bits... but I just don't have the time. thanks for all the positive feedback.

Flipnastywebby, the concept is interesting, and I like the work on the beast's torso. Only I believe the challenge calls for the same-sex twins, which only makes sense since conjoined twins are an abnormal case of identical twins. I think a beastly female can still work, but her body will have to be more feminine. Right now it's very muscular and beefy.
GiantRibot - Cool characters, nice pose. It tells a lot about them and creates an interesting story. I also like the "dirty" background. I feel there's a lot of black shadows in the figure, that maybe can be 3D'ed-up with some bouncing light from the surrounding, some reflected greens in the darkened areas.

it's been a while I haven't done a Chow ! Woohoo ! Glad to see there 's always a lot of entries !
I met twins recently that were completely the opposite of each other mentally and physically. They inspired me these two freaks, meet Francois and Albert Raverstain. I really wanted to write a little backstory but ran out of time. Next time.

Crazy stuff OYO! I still feel like the head and arm of the guy in the back could use more love, but that doesn't change the fact that your design is all kinds of awesome.
Chate, I love your characters' attitude. If anything, I feel like they are dressed a bit too cleanly for post-apocalyptic survivors. still, I really love your rendering style. Great job and can't wait to see it finished :)
I'll try to finish mine tonight after driving the long drive home, but the extra day padding will prove useful if I get too tired to do much :) Thanks daestwen!
