Hey, I managed to get it finished on time. Well, not as finished or as nicely as I would have hoped, but heck, it's better than nothing. It's the Caterpillar, obviously.

EDIT: Okay, so, I made a few changes, and figured that while I was re-uploading the finished piece, I might as well put all the WIPs in one file like everyone else.

For some reason, when I thought of the Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland, I thought of an executive caterpillar. And thus!

Concept: Its a play land scenario for a girl who visit a dark place where she meet Caterpillar occupying the electro motor swing.

Process: Started with the concept in mind as to portray Mr. caterpillar. Drawn it on paper with pencil. Make out lines in photo-shop, I wanted to give focus on his face as well dramatic, so I made rim light quite harsh. put the values down, Alice came after wards I draw it digitally. Then I put the brush on color mode on and off with other blending modes; screen and overlay mostly. I use most of brush on opacity with the selection tool to draw shapes and then adding color in the selection. I made the perspective grid with frontal lines and the with the help of transform scale tool set it on the floor with I have in my mind when I draw Mr. Cater... Then in the end to finalize I did some quick color balance with blue light to get more drama. As the research i googled/wiki-ed around Mr.Caterpillar/caterpillar[insect] to get the flow of the character/design(colors-patterns) done previously by other great artists.
Thanks for you time to read it...

Listen close of what being I recite,
though benign his mind is not quite right.

Twas on confusion not mice or fish it binged,
it's twitching grin should tell it's moste unhinged.

It's purple stripes like it's remarks went ever to and fro,
the idea arises: all this chaos just for show?

Though the astute somtimes learn,
the information for which they yearn.

All these riddles, thou speaks of a cat!
A cat you cried, and Cheshire at that!

I liked the idea of the Cat as someone dangerous, but not really malicious. Just very bored.

Please remember to name your files correctly. I didn't cut based on this on this round, but if images were lost in the poll, this might be why. PLEASE name them correctly. This is to stop file-overlap and to keep me from accidently saving over images for the poll, which would make nobody happy!

Gax- Wow, that is so pretty. Really lovely textures and colors.

Adam Schumpert- I really like the concept, but I wish I could see the actual characters a bit better. Especially the caterpillar, because he looks rather awesome. Even in the close up, he's a bit hard to see.

Abrodos- Creeeeepy. Haha. I love that you took this in such an odd direction.

Kingkostas- Love that little guy! At first glance he's totally adorable, but the ominous colors and that shadow in the bg is almost a little creepy. Very cool. You got my vote. :)

Platonist- I like the way you handled most of the fur, and that you stuck with realistic colors. I wish it wasn't so blurry in some places though...

Giacobino- Beautiful!!!! I'm totally voting for you too. Those WIPs you posted really make me happy. :D

Goog- At first glace, yours didn't stand out too much to me, but now after taking a moment to look at it, I realize it's actually quite well done. It gets a bit messy in places, but I think you successfully conveyed all the important bits. So... I'm voting for you too. :)

Deadred- My favorite part about this is actually the bg. That checkered tree is too neat for words. I also love the human hands on the cat. That sort of thing is always really creepy. The whole thing reminds me of American McGee's Alice a little bit. Voted. :D

Onyx Serpent- Great bg and I love that fluffy tail. Not quite feeling the face, but that's just personal taste. Good job.

Dirkvandalmun- Hahaha, that's hilarious. The evolution of the image is really trippy. And I love how his tail is knotted.

Physicalpariah- I like the teeth and the menacing look on his face. I think the purple doesn't work here. The only incarnation in which the cat is purple, is Disney. I think you would have been more successful if you went different colors.

HiloHello- Simple but effective. He totally looks like some people I know. :P

HunterKiller- I like this a lot. It's not normally a style I embrace (especially for character design), but you really rocked it. You also get my vote :)

drobyazko- Creepy and cute at the same time. Haha. I'm torn between running away, and picking him up for cuddles.

ChristinaMcAllister- Oooh she's pretty. I love her ornate design. I am not quite feeling all the saturated colors. It makes it hard for me to find a focal point... But it's still a really great image. Voted.

Sen Holiday- Welcome to Chow! Reeeeeeally great concept. The rendering is not quite where it could be though. It's only your first Chow, so stick around and you'll be kicking ass soon.

MichaelNoel- She's adorable, really. I also think you pulled off the sketchy coloring really well. I am reeeeally tempted to vote for it, but I think it's lacking as a design. It's just a regular cat-girl. I do like cat-girls, but I think you could have done more with it, that's all. Sorry :( I swear it's really pretty though!

yinteck- Cool design, cool colors, sool style. Voted!

Thesaint- Really neat take on the cat! Good job.

abr7man- half scary, have funny. :P Loving the bg.

Pakgad- The style is just beautiful. But it makes it a little tough to see the character designs. Great colors though. Fun image.

sony- Interesting concept. It seems a little unfinished in certain areas, but that may have been intentional. The ground looks great.

Nickykcin- Not sure how I feel about this one. I like how big the cat is compared to the caterpillar. The cat in general is pretty awesome.

AhChu- Great idea here! I like it.

Novbert- Awwww, he's so cuuuuute! Oh holy crap I want to hug him!! Totally voting for you. :D

Windsrock- I think you went overboard with the textures and colors. I get why you did it, but it makes it more like an illustration than a character design.

|flow|- Neat lighting and cute design. Great job!

crowsrock- The lighting on his upper hand-thingies is just totally great. :P

WunderDark- Neat idea. Very unusual and effective design.

Duq- Awesome!! Welcome to Chow, this looks great. Wouldn't change a thing. I am totally voting for you. :D

artina- Very pretty! I like the texture and detail.

sangfroid- Cute! Hehe. Perfect style for a childrens book or cartoon or something. :P

Bendragon- Wwwwoooooowwwww. He is so awesome! One of my favorites, definitely voting for you.

Texahol- I. Want. That. Shirt. D: Gimme! I like how you let the character design stand on it's own without a complicated bg or anything. Despite common advice, I LOVE the way a character looks against a white bg. Especially one as well-rendered as this. Definitely one of the best this round.

tmbritton- Can't really see much of the character unfortunately. It's just a face (but it's a creepy one, so good job there).

Swordhand- Good concept. I think some reference for the pose would have helped make it a bit more believable.

Alesoun- Awwww. He looks like an adorable little old man. <3 The colors really make this feel like a classic illustration. Good job on those!

Nadiamoon- It's well rendered, but I can't quite figure out what's going on with the body/arms. Love the little tiny Alice though. She looks awesome.

mr-nick- Ahahahahaha. Cat butt. Love his twisty neck too.

Taiski- Looks like something out of a Ghibli film. Just awesome design!!

Stoat- Oh, I love him! He looks absolutely insane and precious. <3

NateShaw- I like how you went a more subdued route with this. It stands out against the over-the-top stuff everyone entered. Very nice.

Jefita- Classic and beautiful. If you're not a famous illustrator already, you should be.

Southern- Intense colors and pretty rendering. I love the poses of each of them.

DecayingLolita- I think you did a nice job rendering this. It's a little hard to see the character though.

chaosrocks- I always like your painterly style. Like you just daubed the paint on. I can never do that with digital. I like the design as well. The fuzzyness of the glass hookah thingy is a little distracting for me though. It doesn't quite fit the rest...

Clochette- Perfect. Just perfect. Totally voting for this one.

Pheonix79- Not quite digging how small her lower half gets compared to her top half. Beautiful face though!

KirNuyts- This is obviously really good. It's too bad it looks so unfinished.

rubicante- Really unusual design for the cat. I really like it!

Ticktocker- Subtle. It looks totally innocent and pretty until you get to that unnerving grin. Really good job with the lighting too.

Jason Strutz- Whoa. Intense. Fun image, for sure. Not sure the character has much of a design. Strikes me more as a creature design than a character design...

Rauwolf- Really pretty colors and rendering on the caterpillar. I love how you made him white!

NoShot- Interesting for sure. I like the glowing mushroom especially.

Felicia- Totally brilliant idea. It's beautiful. You could totally pitch this as a kid's book!

Rockman!- Welcome to Chow! I bet you'll do well, this is really good! Love his facial expression.

Vorace- Epic. Just epic. That cat is the sort of thing childhood nightmares are made of. :D

Bishop Six- Welcome to Chow! Very cute little image. I like the subtle bg a lot.

Cthogua- Really beautifully rendered. Definitely voting for this one.

mugenTaichou- Not quite liking his face, but I like everything else. Especially how he's disappearing.

Dan!- Good job. Really unusual design and technique here.

Arpad- Very interesting take on the brief. It makes for a great illustration, but it doesn't lend itself well to a "character design" at all. I still like it though.

Voted few ones : )
Texahol : Lovely design, I like the fact that you did a human but not a naked catwoman. And I totally want that shirt !
Gax : I won't lick your ass nonono! :P You already know I love your style and design.
Vorace : Some points still disturb me in that picture, like the tengant leg / arm, or the composition a little bit, but in the other hand, I greatly appreciate you made a dark and creepy scene with such warm colors, the typo work, and the fact that there is a nacked chick but it's Alice and not the main character. Your cat is scary : P
Bendragon : I am fan of the design, wicked face and expression and ... trumpets? I love the idea. :D
Giacobino : Beautiful. Classical and very professional illustration, nothing else to say! :)

Congrats all though!

Amazing stuff everyone...

MichaelNoel- She's adorable, really. I also think you pulled off the sketchy coloring really well. I am reeeeally tempted to vote for it, but I think it's lacking as a design. It's just a regular cat-girl. I do like cat-girls, but I think you could have done more with it, that's all
Thanks for the critique- and I agree wholeheartedly. I was already unsure that I'd have time (I ended up having the rest of my week swallowed by work), so I'm glad to have gotten anything done. It's pretty uncreative. (I was definitely in my "safe zone" when creating it, so it's probably just as well that I got cut, regardless of the unfinished nature of it)
I am just learning the ropes of Painter though- this is my first even picture with it- so hopefully it will come easier in the future. :)

Great work, everyone.

Gax: Beautiful textures but I have a hard time telling what I'm looking at.

Giacobino: Really just great all around. I especially like the 'trippy' feeling of being way high up on the mushrooms. I think it would be really cool to have the caterpillar's body also disappearing down into the haze (can't tell if that's what you were going for.

yinteck: I like it a lot! Looks like Alice meets Half-Life. Great expression on his face too!

abr7man: Don't know how I missed this one in the wips thread but it's cool. I like the light coming through/out of his ears. Unfortunately, I think Alice pales in comparison to him. She looks kind of flat and stiff next to all his energy.

Stoat: When you posted the first wip I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but now I'm sold. He has a lot of personality. Cool take on him. I'd like to see the version of Alice he goes with.

Clochette: Cool illustrative style. Nice to see a more trustworthy looking cat. Also, I think I might like your Alice even more than your cat!

KirNuyts: I must say I love your piece. Not sure what it is, but it just grabs me. Nice touch of color on the mushrooms.

Felicia: African Alice is very cool! Really wonderful illustration all around.

Vorace: Really stunningly cool and scary. All the elements work great together. I really like the skull things coming out of the smoke. I'm quite taken by this.

I decided to just vote for two, my favorite cat and caterpillar, so my votes went to Clochette and Giacobino. I loved the storybook style of Clochette's, and the cat fit best with my idea of his Character. Same with Giacobino's Caterpillar. I loved the rendering and scale of it.

The rest are all pretty awesome, but I had to pick two. Thanks to PuppyKitten for taking the time to do all the comments.

adding a vote each for Wunderdark, dirkvandullmen, and christinamcalliste, on behalf of shannanigan, who only had one vote go through.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thank You!!! I hope I'm the only one.... though that may prove that I'm a moron. LOL!

So yeah... my votes. I vote for 2 of each character... :)

Wunderdark - Those snazzy red shoes are tops! Haha! The design of the cat and style of the piece reminds me of something, I can't put my finger on it exactly. Its like a cross between Victorian-era illustrations of Halloween Cats and a vintage Sideshow poster. I really love it!

dirkvandullmen - The cat is on some serious something.... its great! While I was looking at the WIPs I thought it was funny that he started out so cute and innocent in the rough lineart and turned into the wacky grinner in the end!

christinamcalliste - I love the little details in the character design and the visual references to a butterfly in her bodice and the Hookah.

KirNuyts - The vote that made it through! LOL! I love the design of his face and the little hat. What can I say... sometimes its that simple. I hope someday you'll color it! :D

There was one that I want to mention that didn't make it to poll, sangfroid... I loved the idea behind this. Its lacking on character design for the challenge (back of caterpillar, only teeth of cat), but on its own as a cartoon it is really clever! I liked it a lot!
