Hey guys,

I was wondering ,in my poor ignorant impregnable shell whether there are conceptual jobs out there that just deal with 2d, or do they all have some kind of 3d element that I'd need to learn?

I have absolutely no experience with any 3D programs so I'm wondering if this could limit me significantly in finding a conceptual job.

2D is what I love to do but have never applied myself to conceptual work because I have been told that I'd NEED the above to get anywhere....

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Scott.:)

Hello,

I'd say in the computer industry it's good to know the restrictions of the platform but its definately not necessary. There are always people on the production team that know their business, that can help you with that.

It's the visual ideas that count, that make the difference between a cool product on the market and a look-alike.

Same goes for the movie business, live action, cel animated and CG.
Make sure you know your stuff as an illustrator and create a beautiful portfolio so your clients must have you on their production crew.

Good luck,
Leo

Learn 3D. Seriously. There are oppurtunities to break into the indutsry as a 2d guy, but you become alot more marketable when you can add 3D to your skill set. To break in as just a 2D guy, you need to be pretty darn good or pretty darn lucky. The most frustrating thing to hear though is "Your work is good but..........you don't know 3D"

And for some reason many employers now a days don't seen terribly interested in training people. If you got some 3D experince you can use it to get into a company, and when a concept position becomes available you got first shot at it.

"And for some reason many employers now a days don't seen terribly interested in training people."

They don't have to because the market is flooded with skilled professionals.

It's an employers market, and will be for at least 4 more quarters.

Knowledge is power, if you know more than the other guys, you have more leverage, and you'll be better for it.

3D is an edge that has won me many contracts, there have been many times where I won simply for that knowledge but ultimately they never used it anyway. Weird, but true.

Free app that teaches the fundementals well: wings3D

Professional app that serves that is powerful enough for learning as well as using on a professional level for highend output.....Carrara 3 by Eovia.com ALOT of bang for your buck.

Max, Maya, Lightware are industry standard, but if you aren't going to be a modeler, animator or rigger, their costs don't serve the purpose. The ROI isn't sufficient.

not knowing 3d may be an inconvenience, but it will not cripple your career. if you think you can divide your time and resources on 2d and 3d and still 'level-up' significantly in both areas, then well and good. but if you wish to make 2d your main strength, pouring all your time and resources on that, i don't see why that can be a problem. try to learn a little about 3d too. just enough to understand how you can work with 3d modellers in the future.

edit: merry christmas to everyone by the way :chug:

To make it as a 2D guy strictly, you gotta be pretty darn good. I think knowing enough 3D to get you on is a good way to squeeze into a company even when they are not hiring concept guys. Inother worrds, 3D can open doors for you and is a pretty good insurance policy. But if you are independtly wealthy, the yeah by all means scew 3D! But....if you're like the rest of us it would be a nice plan B.:p
