El Coro – 3D for Pre-Visualization

In this download, visual art speed demon Coro Kaufman shows the viewer how to depict a complicated street scene without spending unnecessary hours pouring over every window and leaf. The secret is something industry insiders refer to as “3D”, and while this isn’t an introductory class, the novice user will come away with some quick and dirty approaches to build out a solid looking city in a matter of hours. In the second part, he’ll use Z-depth, ambient occlusion, and standard renders as a base to begin painting over in Photoshop. The resulting image has all the accuracy of the 3D while maintaining a painterly touch; ideal for pre-visualization in games and film.

This looks exciting.

On a related note, Coro's oil portraits are so beautiful they make me ejaculate out of my eyes. Are there any plans for an oil painting video by him?

I don't know.. it might be a bad idea considering your eye condition and all.

I like this one. I'd love to learn more about incorporating 3d with 2d. Thanks.

I've been wanting to get into 3D for some time now, even just to support my painting. This will be purchased ASAR (as soon as released).

GENERAL WARNING: THIS ISN'T A TUTORIAL FOR BEGINNERS ON HOW TO USE 3D.

Ok.. warning over. Just want to make sure people get what they're expecting. I still think you should get it, but if you're absolutely new to 3D you'll have to do some work on your own.

Cha ching!

Are there any previs flythroughs of the city included in the download?

Or is it just stills?

Will be very useful.
Sketchup?
"Standard renders" = ?
just out of curiosity, I see so many different approaches to which one (or two) are the "standard" renders in the business...

I want it.

Evil Sloth: Nope.. no flythroughs. It's not even a complete city. The buildings in the far distance are just textured blocks with almost no geometry, and only one of the streets actually has lights and signs. Straight production.

Studio: 3DS Max, but a lot of the ideas, if not that actual methods, would translate to any 3D program. Standard render, as in a couple of point lights and nothing else (no raytrace, no global illumination, etc.)

Part two won't be finished until next week. At that point the trailer and dvd.massiveblack.com updates will go through as well. I just post here as soon as anything is done so people can get a jump on things, but I never realized it would kill anyone's enthusiasm. We could think about trying to release things a little more smoothly if that's what people prefer.

The multi-part release is the best way to keep prices as low as they are, break up content, and allow people to only buy the section they're interested in.

I'm ok with the devision of parts, and the delay on the trailer. The screenshots are good enough to get people an idea of what's going to be contained in the demo. One thing that may be nice is to list the content of each of the parts, if it makes sense. That way people can buy what's relevant to their needs. Someone who knows how to build a city in max obviously would only need tips on rendering and setting up the render for paint, whereas the opposite would be true for someone less familiar in max and more experienced in painting.

Just an idea, but that being said the output you guys are producing has always been top notch so keep it up. I've never been disappointed with a purchase.

Personally, if Im uncertain wether I will have use for something or not, I wait for the trailer, but the division and the heads-up on the downloads are just fine. I'd rather get a steady stream of new updates then having to wait for two three months inbetween just because part two (and/or three, four n five) isn't(aren't) done.

For me the breaking it apart into different parts is the way to go. I don't want the squeaky wheel to go messing it up for those of us who like it.

Point taken. This started off as a side project taking advantage of the connections between CA & MB, but now we're making efforts to be more business-like with the whole operation. In keeping with that intention, Coro's next release will be a three part series, "Filing, Stapling, and Shuffling Papers." ;)

ps Kemp part 4 is in the works.

That's a good question. He doesn't teach Max so much as how to quickly model a city with basic tools that are common to all 3D programs. For instance, he'll make a cube, stretch it, and then subdivide it. Then he selects the faces, does some beveling and insetting, and then deletes all the inset faces. Then he'll construct another object to fit inside that building (with just one face per side for speedy rendering), and he'll apply a transparent texture which acts as a glass window where all the deleted faces were. It's quick.. it's effective. If you understood that (more or less) in Cinema 4D or any 3D program then you should be good to go. If you're already capable of producing quick 3D renders then feel free to jump ahead to part 2 which is all Photoshop. They're both really really valuable in my opinion... once you grasp the concepts the applications are limitless.

Dual stache? Oh, you mean the "Reverse Hitler"? He's our AD and deep down we like to think that he's always rocking it. Always.

ps Part 2 is up.

-edit- in Maya

make a plane 10x10 size and 4x4 sections, then go to edit mesh > bevel (and select the options, its the black box) then all you do is mess around with the width, change it from 0.5 to 0.1 and it should come out with something similar...

i seem to do everything the hard way, i simply made a plane ( 10x10 8x8 ) then took every other line (select line tool) and moved them over... then deleted any faces i didn't want, it was only seeing your question did i try using the bevel tool...

I finally got some time to go through this video and felt it should be mentioned that anyone shy about or disinterested in 3D would still find a LOT of value in the Part 2 download. It's all Photoshop and Coro shares a shit ton of time saving techniques for painting environments as well as insight on values, color temperature, atmospheric perspective and other good foundational knowledge.

I bought this tutorial a few days ago. I'm about 20 minutes into the first video and I'm loving it so far. For anyone looking to purchase this, you'll definitely want to know how to do some basic box modeling as well as knowing your way around your favorite raytrace renderer in whatever your favorite 3D package is. This definitely isn't a tutorial on teaching major 3D concepts and/or modeling. But it does show you some quick tips on modeling fast buildings.

I purchased this mostly to see how the model is converted to Photoshop and given the painterly look. It's been fun to work along with, even though I'm not that far into it. There's also some moments in the video that Coro has some fits and spazz outs. Interesting stuff for sure. hehh... Waiting for the next episode of freak out.
